WHAT’S NEW: GREEN POWER

Iberdrola’s Scottish Tidal Energy Success A joint Spanish-Scottish project to harness energy produced by the movement of the sea is bringing power to homes and businesses on the Orkney island of Eday. Now Spanish energy giant Iberdrola and its partner Scottish Power plan to install 10 more tidal turbines underwater between the islands of Islay and Jura that could provide power for up to 5,000 homes.
The HS1000 tidal turbine installed off the island of Eday
Scotland was chosen for the project because the tidal conditions are among the most powerful in Europe. The project is being used to research into the efficiency of wave energy. If the next phase proves successful, an even bigger project, capable of producing energy equivalent to one and a half nuclear reactors, is planned under the sea between the Orkneys and mainland Scotland.

FROM THE DUGOUT WITH ANDY DIXON
www.MallorcaAdvertiser.com
Footbal! It’s a Funny Ol’ Game They say football is a funny old game and that is just so true. Of late, many people are saying that footballers get paid too much money and transfer fees are too high. It’s also been said that some of the ways the deals are done are slightly strange, to say the least. Well, listen to this. I found an article on the internet the other day that proves it’s been going on for donkey’s years. The story I found involves two clubs, Arsenal and Bolton Wanderers, and the legendary Arsenal manager, Mr Herbert Chapman. I was lucky enough to be involved with Arsenal in my youth as my grandfather was their assistant manager at that time. I spent many a day kicking a ball around the training ground or wandering around the fantastic Highbury stadium. In the lobby at Highbury was a black marble bust of Mr Chapman and many of the stories floating around the ground concerned him and his dealings. I had always taken these stories with a pinch of salt until now. Picture the scene: the year is 1928 and Arsenal are looking to sign the

Charles Buchan. A meeting was arranged between Mr Chapman with his assistant Bob Wall and the Bolton Wanderers Chairman with his assistant, at the Euston Hotel, in London. Mr Chapman started the occasion by calling the waiter over and saying: “I’d like two large whiskies for our guests, a gin and tonic for myself and a whisky and ginger ale for Mr Wall.” “Sure thing, Mr Chapman” the waiter said with a wink. Mr Chapman then asked about the player and was told “he’s not for sale”. “Wait and just hear my offer” said Mr Chapman as he ordered another round of drinks. They went on talking and drinking late into the night and, with the Bolton party by that time rather tipsy, a deal was struck which meant that David Jack moved to Arsenal for a fee of just under £11,000. On leaving the bar, Bob Wall asked Herbert Chapman how he managed to match the Bolton party and himself drink for drink and yet still keep a clear head, to which Herbert Chapman replied that all of his gin and tonics lacked one ingredient - THE GIN. So while getting the Bolton party drunk all evening he had stayed on tonic water without their knowledge. I think it’s a great story and goes to show that these little tricks have been in football for years. As for the transfer fee of just under £11,000, well, remember it was 1928 and think how much you could have bought for that kind of money back then. Till next time folks, take care, Andy Dixon

Fit for a summer siesta
www.MallorcaAdvertiser.com
For a wide selection of outdoor chairs to relax in, Un Mundo de Hamacas in Palma is a good place to visit. They have a variety of hammocks, hanging chairs and accessories in a range of prices.
SURF, Royal Botania
Designers of outside furniture, Royal Botania, have come up with a revolutionary design for the humble hammock. Their latest elegant collections include Surf, from the same stable as the acclaimed Wave design which the Belgian company describes as neither a hammock, sun chair or umbrella. It is a piece of considered artwork that combines functionality with beauty and elegance.

If you’re new to the delights of hammocks and planning to buy one this summer, remember that width is the all-important factor to take into account. A hammock needs to be wide enough for you to lie diagonally. If the hammock is less than 1.4 metres wide, you’ll probably find your siesta less than satisfying! DINING OUT: Hot New Dining Experience DINER MAX, MAGALUF
www.MallorcaAdvertiser.com
It’s not often that I crave a burger but when I do, I go in search of something that has high meat content and lots of flavour. At Diner Max, Magaluf’s new, Americanstyle, eating experience, I found what I was looking for.
gives the place great atmosphere. As we approached our table, I thought someone had left a car wheel leaning against the wall, and then I realised it was another touch of mid-century americana. With nonintrusive music and a clean, crisp look, the restaurant’s got style that sets it apart and makes for a very pleasant eating place. As well as the magnificent, freshly-cooked burgers, the menu includes steaks, ribs, chicken dishes, quesadillas, pizzas, vegetarian dishes and a variety of main course salads. The most expensive burger is just 7.95, and most dishes are under a tenner. So tasty You’re guaranteed service with a smile at Diner Max and good value. The menu boasts 10 different burgers, but You’ll find Diner Max opposite the public for me there was one obvious choice. The car park and padel courts, between Papi’s Black and Blue comes with Cajun seasoning pub and House of Katmandu. and melted blue cheese. It’s a combination which delivers all that’s best about fast food. Being a lover of all things hot, I asked for the homemade, hot chilli sauce and can confirm that it is hot. Served with a smile – just like it says on the menu – the superlative meat-in-a-bun dish came with coleslaw and a generous helping of fries. It was delicious and filling. Would I like a dessert? asked Spencer, the chef and host. I was about to refuse, feeling kind of full to bursting. Then I heard the options and found a small corner of stomach pleading for more. Apple crumble pie with custard. Yum! My friend had Alabama Choc Fudge Cake and scraped his plate at the end. We’re both on diets now. The décor of this newly refurbished diner 8
