WHAT’S NEW: BANKIA ASKS FOR 19 BILLION Bankia Given “Junk Status”
Bankia and its parent Banco Financiero y de Ahorros (BFA), which were nationalized earlier this month, will ask the state for a further 19 billion euros to clean up their balance sheet, sources close to the bank said on Friday.
BFA-Bankia needs to make provisions for loans to real estate developers of 7.1 billion euros and needs a further capital cushion of 1.9 billion. BFA is also expected to have to write down the book value of its 45-percent stake in Bankia, which currently stands at 12 billion euros against a market value of under 1.5 billion, which is expected to see it restate its 2011 results to show a loss.

If we go for the public bank option, we must have maximum transparency and parliamentary control” The government is considering folding all of the lenders that have been taken over by the Bank of Spain to form a large public bank. The government has also taken over the reins at Caixa Catalunya, Novagalicia and Banco de Valencia. The Bank of Spain’s Orderly Bank Restructuring Fund (FROB) is already converting 4.465 billion euros in preferential shares given to BFA into common stock, which will give the government control of both BFA and Bankia. The total rescue package of 23.5 billion euros will be by far the biggest bailout in Spain. The government had earlier calculated that a clean-up of the banking system as a whole would not amount to more than 15 billion euros, half of which was earmarked for Bankia. The figures have yet to be confirmed officially by Bankia whose board of directors started a meeting to discuss the state of the bank’s finances at 4.30pmFriday 25th May 2012. The National Securities Commission (CNMV) on Friday suspended trading in Bankia’s shares on the request of the bank ahead of the announcement on the capital requirements of Spain’s fourth-largest lender. Bankia’s shares closed Thursday down 7.43 percent at 1.57 euros, a 58-percent discount to the bank’s listing price last year of 3.75 euros. The banks have been ordered to increase their provisions by up to 84 billion euros for potential losses against real estate assets. 3
Ahead of a meeting with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, the leader of the main opposition Socialist Party, Alfredo Rubalcaba, said this was an option worth considering. “We should study this. If we go for this option, a public bank, it should have the status of a public bank: maximum transparency and parliamentary control,” Rubalcaba said. There was further bad news for Spain’s banks on Friday when Standard & Poor’s cut the credit ratings of Bankia, Banco Popular Español and Bankinter to junk status and also took ratings action on other Spanish lenders.

Olympic Dreams Torched? This weeks “From The Dugout” goes off track somewhat. I usually waffle on about football but this week I am going to write about the 2012 Olympics, Well to be honest the Olympic torch, as youngsters we used to watch the build up to the Olympics and the guy carrying the torch and wonder how he managed. Well things are different now: the torch is in the UK actually there are over 8,000 of them in the UK and over 8,000 torch bearers are going to carry one, which means that each person gets to carry their torch for only about 300 hundred yards; very strange. It’s not all been plain sailing up to now! After only 3 days into it journey the torch went out in Great Torrington, Devon and the backup team forgot the Swan Vesta’s. Last Thursday a major newspaper in the UK reported that the torch got lost in Bristol after coming off the Clifton suspension bridge which indicates to me that they think the torch has a mind of its own; surely the person carrying the torch is the one that got lost.
charity but if you read their listings fully most are only giving 20% to charity is this wrong or is it right? Well I have dug a little deeper into this and have found that the original cost to the taxpayer was £495 per torch; but for the bearer to keep the torch they have to pay £215 for it. So in my eyes this means that regardless of whether or not they get lost in Bristol, or they only carry it 300 yards or even if it goes out on them if they have paid for it then its theirs to do with as they please, it’s a sad fact of life that in today’s poor economic climate people are cashing in on things that maybe in different times would be kept to pass on to loved ones or even given to museums, but hey life is life and I for one say good luck to them. Till next week folks be nice to each other, Andy Dixon
I am also hearing in the news that the torch bearers are now selling their torches and uniforms on eBay. One had offers of over £150,000 but the bidder turned out to be a hoaxer but they are selling for around the £60,000 mark, this is causing some concern and some people are saying that it should not be allowed and that the proceeds should go back into the Olympic fund. Some sellers are getting around this by saying they are giving the money to 4
