UPDATE FROM KIGEZI Kenneth Twinamatsiko’s Blog

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. It is an honour to covey our heartfelt thanks and love to you from us all at Kigezi. With gratefulness and thanksgiving, we appreciate your prayers and financial support to us through the Kigezi Diocese Water and Sanitation Programme which has not only improved access to clean water but is transforming livelihoods across Kigezi. Around 2000 people have now been blessed with clean water following the construction of the Birambo gravity flow scheme. The scheme covers over 19km and has 2 reservoir tanks and 29 tapstands. Those we have trained in the community have now built 110 rain water tanks next to people’s homes so that they no longer have to trek down the valley to get water.

Bishop George Bagamuhunda launched a new conservation farming project called “Farming God’s Way.” We will be integrating this into all of our Water and Sanitation projects to address the effects of climate change in poor communities. This will enable the beneficiaries to overcome hunger and grow a surplus to sell and improve their household incomes. While we celebrate all that has been achieved in the last few months the time has not passed without challenges. Many people have been falling sick and this has meant less people in the community have been able to participate in the implementation of our programmes. Also many families in Kigezi have vegetable gardens which keep them going between harvests. This year the climate has been poor and people have struggled to grow enough food to see them through to

the next harvest and families are already starting to go hungry. When the communities we work in go through times of increased difficulty we often find that they neglect the maintenance of water projects, we hope that even in hardship they will remember the importance of access to clean water. We thank you for joining us as we pray for our work and the nation of Uganda. Pray for the poorest of the poor, the disabled, elderly, orphans and street children, it is always the most vulnerable who suffer the most when we are faced with issues such as inflation, unemployment and hunger. We pray that the Lord will bless them, providing all they need to live with dignity and joy. Kenneth works as an Advocacy and Communications Officer for KDWSP.

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Additional Reading: John 10:7-11 7 Therefore Jesus said again, ‘Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. 11 ‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

NEXT SUNDAY: Matthew 25:31-46, Radical Hospitality

DISCIPLESHIP 1. Reflect together on your learning and our worship last Sunday. What was being said? How did the Holy Spirit particularly speak to you? 2. Think back over the last few weeks and our ministry with older people, the sacraments and the emerging generation. Stir in our themes for the next two weeks: generosity and hospitality. Where, if at all, do you see these in our Acts 2 passage? 3. Are you part of a congregation, a community or a movement? 4. Agree together the top three most challenging ideas in the Acts 2 passage. What most works against these ideas in contemporary society? Which Christian disciplines can aid us in these areas? 5. How is generosity manifest in your life, and in the life of the Abbey?

NOTICEBOARD A B B E Y K I T C H E N S U N D AY: O C T 1 8 T H Your lunch or supper next Sunday, as we focus on Christ’s call to hospitality and the work of The Abbey Kitchen, will be slow braised beef, roasted potatoes, seasonal veg, pudding, with vegetarian, dairy and gluten free options. If you worship at the 10.30am this is your lunch; if you worship at 4pm this is your supper; all of us, together. Bring your own drinks; bring generous donations for food. The abbey will be set up like a large restaurant with an open kitchen in the South Aisle, where Dan will be preparing our food. Young people from the Boat are our waiters at lunch time. We also need a number of volunteer waiters from the 10.30am congregation for the supper serving at 5.30pm. Please call or text Dan on 07817 594007.

C O M M U N I O N B E F O R E C O N F I R M AT I O N The Abbey PCC is currently considering a change to our current practice around Holy Communion and young people. This would mean that in accordance with General Synod Regulations (2006), and in the context of ongoing discipleship and commitment to Junior Church, baptized children can be prepared and admitted to Communion before Confirmation with the first candidates being admitted at Easter 2016. There will be a meeting from 8pm-9pm in the Parish Office this Monday, 12th October, with Neill & Andrew, for anybody, of any generation, who would like to discuss this proposal further.

MUSIC FOR AUTISM Many thanks to the great team who worked so very hard to make this year’s Music for Autism project such a great success this year. Life-giving concerts with Derek Paravicini in the morning and afternoon, a brilliant gala concert in the evening, and over £1000 raised for the charity, which will be back in 2016.
