‘Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light.’

19/01/14 MALMESBURY ABBEY

Vicar’s blog: Tom I had a chance to pray with Tom and Sarah Price last Sunday. Tom is leaving on Wednesday 22nd January to work with Tearfund in the Philippines for 3 months. Tom asks for the Abbey’s prayer support, and writes: ‘I'll be flying out to Manila with Oenone Chadburn, head of humanitarian support; the trip lasts about 12 weeks, so I should be back second week of April. I'll be joining a team to help establish a relief hub for Integral Alliance, Tearfund's disaster relief partner agency for that area. I'll be working as a communications officer, visiting projects, partners and beneficiaries to collect stories, case studies and photos to report back to IA's charity members (i.e. Tearfund, Medair, and others) and their supporters. I'll also be hosting journalists and training local people. It's still pretty early days for this project and currently they don't have anywhere permanent to stay. I think we'll be based in Manila and will travel out to affected areas fairly frequently, but the logistics will be worked out when I get there. I've been asked to blog the trip for Tearfund, so that will be a good way for Abbey members to stay in touch and pray for me; I also hope to send some quick updates directly to you all. Please pray that Sarah will have lots of people to keep her company and give her love and support, and that the preparation, travelling and setting up go smoothly.’ So let’s pray as often as we can.

1 John 2:3-2:14 3

We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, ‘I know him,’ but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

7

Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. 9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. 10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.

12

I am writing to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. 14 I write to you, dear children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

Additional Reading: John 14:15-21 15

‘If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you for ever – 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me any more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realise that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.’

Apart from the cross of Calvary, which action of Jesus Christ strikes you as really loving and why? ‘God is love’ (1 John 4:16). Does our understanding of love define God, or does our understanding of God define love? Is it then a problem if we don’t fully understand either? Read 1 John 2:3-2:14. Verse 5 seems to put obedience at the heart of love—or maybe John’s implying something else. What is he getting at? And how is it at the heart of human relationships? See verses 9 & 11. Have you ever encountered hatred? What did it look like? Is it realistic to expect not to encounter hatred in the life of the church? (NB John seems to have the problem in his churches.) ‘In verses 7-11 John urges behavioural change, in verses 12-14 he shows confidence that God can work that change in us.’ Discuss.
