STARS Vicar’s Blog

Last Sunday I spent five minutes at our larger services talking about the Abbey Roof, a specialist subject of mine, which will be replaced in 2017 using a very long ladder and a lot of tiles. String too, I guess. To recap a little, the Abbey inspecting architect, Izaak Hudson, tells us that to do this very necessary work will cost us £165,000, (2017 prices) and this is obviously an item so large that it can’t come out of our everyday budget. The good news is that if we apply in the next few weeks we have a very real chance of obtaining a government grant of up to £100,000 towards this total. Combine that with some support locally from trusts and we might have the more doable challenge of raising £35,000 from our congregation and local community. This seems not too scary, in fact an achievable price tag for a roof on a 12th century building. And, as I said last Sunday, I really

don’t mind us putting a new roof on a building as long as there is committed prayer and imaginative ministry going on beneath the roof. And I include in the imaginative category both Malmesbury Abbey Skate 2016 and Little Stars, see cover, which Andrew Beebee and the team kick off on Monday February 15th. Soft play and fun for people a little younger and little smaller than myself – although the staff and leadership team at the Abbey didn’t put it quite as nicely as that. Anyway, you’ve been big stars over the Roof Appeal. It seems everybody wants to play their part, and if we all do that we can demonstrate to the government, in our grant application, that there is a green light just waiting to be pushed on this project. Yes, big stars. The response last week was deeply encouraging. Over £15,000 was pledged very quickly,

and bear in mind I actually asked people to bring back their pledge forms this coming weekend, not before they’d finished their coffee. If we each pledge £100, £500 or £1000, in fact whatever is appropriate to what God has blessed you with, we’ll get there. And remember we are not asking for a penny now, but a signed form indicating what you will give to this project on January 1st 2017. Philippians 2:15 encourages the children of God to shine like stars in the world. Thank you; last week I saw a twinkle.

Please return your pledge forms this weekend preferably, or by Sunday February 7that the very latest.

LU K E 2 : 2 8 - 4 0 22

When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord’), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: ‘a pair of doves or two young pigeons’. 25

Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: 29 ‘Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen your salvation, 31which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.’ 33 The child’s father and mother marvelled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: ‘This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.’ 36

There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped night and day, fasting and praying. 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. 39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.

DISCIPLESHIP 1. Read Luke 2:22-40 aloud. You might try having different voices for Simeon and Anna. Share a particular word or phrase that stands out for you in the passage and, if you can, explain why it feels significant. 2. Simeon saw the infant Jesus as fulfilling a promise to him personally, but also as part of God's purposes for the world (verses 2932). Do we sometimes get too focused on what our faith means to us personally, and forget to think about God's wider purposes? 3. Simeon saw the human cost to Mary of being the mother of the Messiah (v35). Mary's love and loyalty to her Son brought her joy and sorrow. Who are the people today whose loyalty to Christ is causing them both joy and sorrow? 4. Anna is described as being 'of great age' but still showed hope and joy in the Messiah. What can we learn from Anna about keeping our capacity for hope and joy through life's trials?
