Is it because we are closer to the limits of the sky, or due to the elemental forces that created the mountains millions of years ago? Possibly it is the feeling of freedom created by the breathtaking views atop of the world. Whatever the reason may be, the power of mountains is forever present. Their power is addictive, contagious and they leave you feeling fulfilled as their energy stretches far beyond the mountains themselves.

The mountains connect the heavens with earth so say the indigenous Himalayan people. Anyone who has ventured to the mountains can relate to the ethereal moment when the burdens of everyday life are instantly put in perspective. The once seemingly large tasks of today are shrunk down to granular size. On the reverse side the seemingly simple things in life that we brush aside come to life. One such example is a familiar snack carried with you that seems to exude new flavors when enjoyed from atop a mountain.

Everyone can embrace the power of the mountains and feel anew. The magic that happens at the top can be felt everyday and is for many a way of life. Our desire is to harness the mountains strength giving energy from the highest top to the valley floor and infuse it with modern day culture. Beyond the mountains is to generate a new perspective once beyond ones field of view and these simple yet powerful three words have become the inspiration for our new collection.

The story behind the collection

Going deeper, we took a step back in time to a place when modern day culture was rediscovering nature and the mountains. At the height of the mountain tourism boom of the 1970’s a rethinking to the approach of preserving nature and the cultural ties to the mountains for future generations was paramount. In the later half of the 70’s a new outdoor initiative was launched, which was later coined as ‘Sustainable Tourism’. Today this movement has a deep respect for mountain cultures and

are committed to protecting and advocating nature through experiencing the outdoors in its most natural and wildest state. We feel strongly connected to the values of this early movement and therefore it is without surprise that the design concept of our new collection is influenced by the wild and natural state of the outdoors. To further relay the collection story we were absorbed in study of historical places and styles of the 1970’s and

to relay those feelings in our photographs and designs. Our journey into the roots of outdoor culture guided by our love for sport and the joy of pursuing adventure together as a team had taken us Beyond The Mountains.

entstanden sind? Oder einfach an der Freiheit, die so viel Raum hat, sich auszubreiten? Warum auch immer – die Kraft der Berge ist einfach da. Sie erfüllt. Sie steckt an. Sie geht weit über die Berge hinaus. Die Berge verbinden den himmlischen mit dem irdischen Raum. So sagen es die Ureinwohner des Himalaya und jeder von uns kennt diesen besonderen Augenblick am Berg, wenn die Sorgen des Alltags plötzlich klein werden, wenn ganz wenig glücklich macht und die mitgebrachte Brotzeit zu etwas Besonderem wird und viel besser schmeckt als an jedem anderen Ort der Welt. 8

Jeder kann die Kraft der Berge aufnehmen und für sich bewahren. An jedem Tag. Überall. Denn die Magie am Gipfel ist keine Momentaufnahme, vielmehr ein Lebensgefühl. Wir wollen die Berge, ihre Energie, ihre Kraft und ihr Gefühl ins Tal und ins tägliche Leben bringen. Beyond the Mountains - über die Berge hinaus - haben wir daher unsere neue Kollektion genannt.

Es war in der zweiten Hälfte der 1970er Jahre, als eine Initiative startete, die später mit dem Begriff des „sanften Tourismus“ umschrieben wurde. Auf dem Höhepunkt der Boomjahre im Bergtourismus war ein Umdenken dringend notwendig, galt es doch die Natur und den Kulturraum der Berge auch für zukünftige Generationen zu erhalten. Heute steht diese Bewegung dafür, die Natur zu schützen, sie möglichst nah, intensiv und ursprünglich zu erleben - sowie für den Respekt gegenüber der Kultur in den Bergregionen.

Wir fühlen uns stark verbunden mit diesem Gedankengut. So ist es wenig überraschend, dass auch die Designsprache unserer neuen Kollektion in diesem Sinne geprägt ist. Auch war es uns ein Bedürfnis, beim Fotografieren alpine und historische Plätze der 1970er Jahre aufzunehmen. Berge, Orte, Wege voller Kraft, aufgesaugt und mitgenommen Beyond the Mountains.

Sella Ronda 2.240 meters The wild Sella rock formation rises to gigantic proportions out of a green valley. The power and strength of the mountains accompanies the riders every meter of their way across the Grödner and the Sella ridges. Racing history was made here with almost every Giro d’Italia passing through the Dolomites at an elevation of 2.121 to 2.240 meters. It’s no wonder why this area is regarded as one of the most beautiful alpine regions.

Mächtig ragt das wilde Sellamassiv aus dem Grün der Täler heraus. Auf jedem Meter begleitet Rennradfahrer die Kraft der Berge auf ihrem Weg über das Grödner Joch und das Sellajoch. Und nicht nur sie: Auch Radsportgeschichte ist auf diesen Pässen in den Dolomiten hinauf auf 2.121 beziehungsweise 2.240 Metern allgegenwärtig. Denn kaum ein Giro d’Italia führt nicht über diese Serpentinen. Kein Wunder: Sie gehören zu den schönsten in den Alpen.

Monte Grappa 1.775 meters Only 1.775 meters, easy… right? No way. Don’t make the mistake of underestimating the Monte Grappa Pass. The climb starts at 129 meters and this means that Monte Grappa pushes riders to their limits. Geographically, the ridge itself is a border marking the southern edge of the Dolomites and the end of the Alps. With the flatlands of the river Po below, the view when you’ve reached the peak is spectacular.

Von unten grüßt die Poebene herauf. Oben angekommen, eröffnet sich so ein besonderer Blick über die Berge hinaus.

Gotthard Pass 2.106 meters Climbing happens here. Not rock climbing, but on the road, careening around one hairpin turn after another. The Gotthard Pass in Switzerland is the perfect place for those who love to climb. It offers 24 cobblestone switchbacks of breathtaking and uninterrupted views with hardly any traffic. Furthermore, this desirable location attracts a select group of cyclists who wish to take on this kind of challenge.

Hier wird geklettert. Nicht am Fels. Sondern Kurve um Kurve auf dem Asphalt. Der Gotthardpass in der Schweiz macht Kletterfans auf dem Rennrad glücklich. Und auch jene, die Pässe vor imposanter Kulisse ungestört bezwingen möchten. Denn durch das Val Tramola befahren diesen Pass der Pässe und seine 24 Serpentinen auf Kopfsteinpflaster kaum Autos. Rad-Enthusiasten bleiben beim Klettern unter sich.

PUSHBIKERS RACE KIT DEVELOPMENT Likened to a fine wine a good product, like the new Pushbikers line, takes time to reach maturity. It took three years to develop the new high-end line for road biker, Christian Grasmann, the maloja Pushbikers Team founder and leader, and for the maloja development team to be satisfied. The result is an eightpiece line, which is nothing short of remarkable. From countless pattern changes, testing different materials in multiple garment locations and fine-tuning cycling chamois’s, the journey to perfection has been endless. No one can say how many hours were spent hunched over computers or out in the field testing product, neither maloja’s design team or Christian “Grasi” Grasmann the maloja Pushbikers team founder and leader. Regardless of the time spent the end goal was always to ensure the Pushbikers are 100% happy with the outcome and the reason why it took ages to complete the new maloja Pushbikers line. The Pushbikers collection meets the expectations of the elite race cyclists and top athletes who seek out garments that have been designed with the smallest of details first of mind and have undergone rigorous testing

and redesign until considered complete. Every aspect of every garment has gone through a strict and exhausting trial phase of kilometer after kilometer on the bike followed by countless washing cycles. Such a rigorous test means that rough seams and edges are quickly ruled out with the end goal to feel as though the athlete is wearing nothing at all. In total three years were invested into developing the Pushbikers range, three years of intense collaboration that all parties gain from, and three years that Christian refers to as the biggest challenge; Creating the perfect fit. As a result of the investment into the race suit design, six different technical materials are combined to make the perfect fit. High breathability, compression fitting with soft edges comprised the core garment design outcome. Aerodynamics became a top development topic that involved sourcing a specific material for placement over the shoulder, a pursuit to gain every fraction of every second when an athlete needs it most. “If you do what you do with passion, you have already won” words Christian’s team lives by and a testament to the new Pushbikers line.

Ein gutes Produkt braucht seine Zeit bis es die richtige Reife hat – da hält es die neue Pushbiker-Linie wie mit einem guten Tropfen Wein. Drei Jahre hat es gedauert, bis die neue High End Linie für Road Bike Christian Grasmann, Teamchef der maloja Pushbiker, und das maloja Entwicklungteam zufrieden stellte. Herausgekommen ist eine achtteilige Linie, die kaum Wünsche offen lässt. Unzählige Male haben sie die Nahtführung geändert, verschiedene Stoffqualitäten an unterschiedlichen Stellen getestet und immer wieder das Sitzpolster optimiert. Wieviel Zeit sie inzwischen vor dem Bildschirm und beim Testen verbracht haben? Christian „Grasi“ Grasmann, der Teamchef der maloja Pushbiker, weiß es nicht, das maloja-Entwicklungteam hat ebenfalls nicht mitgezählt. Es ist ihnen auch nicht wichtig. Denn es galt der Grundsatz: Sie tüfteln, verändern und verbessern so lange, bis die maloja Pushbikers zu 100 Prozent zufrieden sind. So ist in diesen zahllosen Stunden des Änderns und Optimierens die neue maloja Pushbikers Linie entstanden. Eine Kollektion für Top-Rennradfahrer sowie für jeden ambitionierten Athleten, der Wert legt auf eine Bekleidung, bei der alle Details durchdacht und auf Praxistauglichkeit hin getestet sind.

PUSHBIKERS RACE KIT ENTWICKLUNG Jedes Teil der Linie hat eine strenge und anstrengende Probephase hinter sich. Denn es wurde Kilometer für Kilometer auf dem Rad geschunden und unzählige Male gewaschen. Schließlich musste es den höchsten Anforderungen genügen, die alle ambitionierten Radfahrer an ihr Equipment haben. Das bedeutet: Nichts darf scheuern; im Grunde sollte man die Bekleidung nicht einmal spüren. Alles in allem stecken so drei Jahre Entwicklungsarbeit in der Pushbikers-Linie. Drei Jahre intensiver Austausch, von dem beide Seiten profitieren. Drei Jahre auch, in denen schließlich doch das geschafft wurde, was Christian immer als die „größte Herausforderung“ bezeichnet hat: die optimale Passform zu finden. Dafür kommen in den Anzügen sechs verschiedene Materialien zum Einsatz; so platziert, dass sie optimal wirken. Das heißt, gute Atmungsaktivität, besonders guter Halt und weiche Abschlüsse. Sogar an der Optimierung des Luftwiderstandes wurde gearbeitet und hierfür ein spezielles Material im Schulterbereich verwendet. Immer auf der Suche nach den entscheidenden Sekunden. Ohnehin fährt Christians Pushbikers-Team mit dem Grundsatz: „Wenn man etwas mit Leidenschaft macht, hat man bereits gewonnen.“ In dieser neuen Bekleidungslinie steckt jede Menge davon. 39

A mountain bike adventure in Liguria

Time travel with friends Leave your workday behind and take a trip with us to a place where time comes to a stand still. A place away from the crowds and where nature remains untouched. We set off on a short bike-packing trip together with friends and for this reason alone it was already perfect.

From the start, our adventure felt as though we were traveling through time, and not because the man-made trails were scarce, but because the few small towns we encountered lacked the chaos and technological influences of the big city. What we stumbled upon on our adventure was a slower, calmer place. Within the first few meters of our journey the stillness of the extraordinary surroundings took hold of us. We set up our first camp in a forest of larch trees and prepared our supper; canned ravioli, which tasted surprisingly fresh!

Despite the simple nature of the meal, eating outdoors with friends made it a feast. With sleep in our eyes we started early the next morning down a path that abruptly ended with a crystal clear river running across it. To cross the river we shouldered our bikes and waded through, which made for an abrupt wake up call. The colors and shapes of the nature engulfed our senses and captivated us. Beech wood and larch trees laid out before us against a mountain backdrop of picturesque hills, all connected by the intertwined overgrown 42

military roads that have long since served their purpose. The scene was a continuum of mountains that unfolded like a fan before our eyes.

The road snaked steeply uphill, passed flowers in bloom and the increasingly rocky terrain of the mountain, before reaching a vast and impressive plateau. We unpacked our sleeping bags for the night and enjoyed the breathtaking view in silence. While the sun was setting we drank our tea and enjoyed that magical moment, the type of moment where a simple cup of tea becomes something infinitely more special. The next day the path meandered along old smuggler routes carved into the mountainside. On this day we were far from the smugglers of the past with not even a breadcrumb to our names having polished off our provisions.

Our short trip was over too quickly and now we are back to the real world, but the memories we created together will last forever.

Eine Zeitreise mit Freunden Den Alltag hinter sich zu lassen: Nirgends funktioniert das besser als an einem Ort, an dem die Zeit stehen geblieben zu sein scheint. An dem man die Natur kaum mit anderen Menschen teilen muss. An dem die Landschaft so ursprünglich ist, als hätte sie noch kaum einer gesehen. Einen solchen Ort haben wir in Ligurien gefunden. Mit unseren Bikes sind wir aufgebrochen. Ein Kurztrip mit Freunden – und allein deshalb schon perfekt.

Unsere Tour fühlt sich wie eine Zeitreise an. Nicht nur, weil sich in der Natur kaum Spuren von Menschen finden, sondern auch, weil die wenigen Orte nicht Hightech und Hektik beherrschen, sondern vielmehr Einfachheit, Langsamkeit und Ruhe. Schon auf den ersten Metern umarmt uns die faszinierende Stille inmitten der besonderen Landschaft. In einem verlassenen Lärchenwald schlagen wir unser erstes Lager auf. Zum Abendessen am Feuer gibt’s Ravioli aus der Dose – die gar nicht nach Fertiggericht

schmecken. Draußen mit Freunden wird daraus ein Festessen. Schläfrig machen wir uns am nächsten Morgen auf den Weg, den bald ein glasklarer Fluss durchschneidet. Bikes geschultert und quer durch – wir sind wach! Und saugen die Farben und Formen der Natur auf: den Buchenwald, der die Lärchen abgelöst hat, ruppige, zerfallene und von Wurzeln durchzogene Militärstraßen, grüne Berge und das gebirgige Hinterland.

Wie Fächer reihen sich die Berge – unendlich viele scheinen es zu sein – hintereinander auf. In steilen Serpentinen führt der Weg bergauf. Vorbei an blühenden Gärten und kalten Felsen bis zur Hochgebirgsfläche. Dort packen wir unsere Schlafsäcke aus, genießen bei absoluter Stille das Panorama und den Sonnenuntergang mit unserem Tee. Es ist wieder dieser Moment, in dem eine Kleinigkeit, eine Tasse Tee, zu etwas ganz Besonderem wird.

Über die ehemaligen Schmugglerpfade schlängelt sich der Trail des nächsten Tages am Hang entlang. Zum Schmuggeln gibt’s für uns nichts mehr – alles aufgegessen. Dafür erwartet uns einmal mehr eine mystische Stimmung; Kargheit wechselt sich mit dem saftigen Grün der Gebirgshänge ab, bis wir den Endpunkt unserer Tour erreichen. Vom Ziel zu sprechen, wäre sicher nicht korrekt, denn die ganzen drei Tage über war immer der Weg das Ziel.

Ein Kurztrip mit Freunden geht zu Ende. Der Alltag hat uns wieder. Das Erlebnis aber nehmen wir mit.

We set out to create our own Batik (Tie Dye) colors and patterns for the Beyond the Mountains collection and to do so we turned our backyard patio into a color lab. The colors of the 1970‘s sparked our interest and we combined today’s technology through a collaboration of craftsmanship and computers. For all of us it was an exciting and challenging new approach to designing a print pattern.

The classic Batik patterns of twists and spirals were not the only point of inspiration as we found a deeper connection to the hippie spirit of the 70’s generation. We desired to embrace the positive values of peace, freedom and creativity, the corner stones of hippie philosophy. With inspiration in tow we set out to purchase the dyes, tubs for color bathing and some enormous white sheets. We dyed the sheets on the patio, mixing colors to create different shaded spots and splashes on the wet, crumpled fabric. After a very long drying and ironing session the sheets were brought to our photo lab to be digitized for further color tweaking and to easily integrate them into our digital design processes.

Our greatest challenge was to match the tie-dye patterns. Four different producers developed countless versions and painstakingly weeded out the best from the rest before finally settling on the selection for Beyond The Mountains.

Für diesen Style haben wir unsere Terrasse in ein Farb-Experimentier-Labor verwandelt. Denn wir wollten für Beyond the Mountains unsere eigenen Batik-Muster mit unseren eigenen Batik-Farben entwickeln. Inspiriert von den 1970ern, umgesetzt nach Techniken und Ideen von heute als Kombination aus Hand- und Computerarbeit. Eine spannende und für uns alle neue Herangehensweise, einen Print zu entwickeln.

Dabei waren’s nicht nur die klassischen Muster der Schnecken und Wirbel, von denen wir uns haben inspirieren lassen. Auch der Gedanke der Hippies in den 1970ern, Dinge selbst zu gestalten, hat uns angetrieben. Ebenso wie die Idee, positive Werte wie Frieden und Freiheit mit in unsere Kollektion zu bringen, die die Hippie-Philosophie ja ebenfalls ausgezeichnet haben. So machten wir uns an die Arbeit. Wir besorgten Farbpulver, Wannen für Farbbäder und riesige weiße Laken, färbten sie auf der Terrasse ein, verteilten klecksartig verschiedene Töne auf dem feuchten, zerknüllten Stoff und brachten schließlich – nach langen 56

Trocknungs- und Bügeleinsätzen – das Laken ins Fotostudio, um die Batik zu digitalisieren, die Farben im Photoshop anzupassen, das Design in Zeichnungen zu integrieren. Die große Herausforderung: Die Batik sollte einen einheitlichen Look haben. Vier verschiedene Produzenten haben unzählige Versionen entwickelt und wieder verworfen, bis das Beyond-the-Mountains-Design stand: eine eigene, selbst kreierte Batikwelt in unserer Kollektion.

a new era In the 1970s a group of young men from the USA who were in Gary Fisher’s inner circle collected old bicycles at the dump, fixed them up and raced across the dirt tracks and trails of their home state California. They were a little crazy, always looking for something new and loved nothing more than riding their bikes, which surmounted to the them unknowingly becoming bicycle pioneers. 40 years later much has changed, however the essence of the past pioneers remains, such is the case with mountain bikers like Guido Tschugg. Biking is Guido’s love and what directs his life and in todays age of the e-mountain bike he is making new tracks. Guido is a long time MTB Worldcup Pro and a Red Bull Rampage contestant. He has changed gears to reach higher altitudes, longer distances, more trails and is making it so with the electric drive and ushering in a new era of mountain biking.

EINE neUE ÄRA Sie waren sicher ein wenig verrückt. Sie hatten zudem jede Menge Spaß am Radfahren. Und sie wollten mal was Neues ausprobieren. So wurden sie zu Pionieren: In den 1970er Jahren bauten junge Männer um Gary Fisher in den USA alte Räder von Schrottplätzen um und jagten mit ihnen über die Schotterpisten und Trails ihrer Heimat Kalifornien. Es war die Geburtsstunde der Mountainbikes. 40 Jahre später ist alles anders und dennoch lassen sich ein paar Parallelen finden zu Mountainbikern wie Guido Tschugg. Er liebt

und lebt für das Biken. Und er geht neue Wege: Guido ist heute am liebsten mit dem E-Mountainbike unterwegs. Um mehr Höhenmeter, mehr Strecke, mehr Trails fahren zu können. Für den langjährigen MTB-Weltcup Profi hat mit dem Elektroantrieb im Mountainbike eine neue Ära begonnen. 62

GORGE DE VERDON

The perfect rock The rocks of Verdon are simply the best limestone and for many it’s the perfect rock. A must visit for climbers, you need to have been there to understand, to have touched the wall, climbed the legendary gorge and felt the power emanating from the mountains. In April maloja athlete Markus Bendler along with climber Steffi Hanrieder, photographer Michael Meisl and mountain guide Gebhard Bendler set off to experience the enchantment of Verdon.

For Steffi it was her first visit to this magical place, where vultures circle above and the mistral wind threatens to blow you off the inverted portions of the climb. For Markus and Michi this was a return trip as they have visited Verdon many times prior and still can’t seem to get enough. The approach to the climb is unique at Verdon as the descent comes first with a 300-meter drop from the cliffs edge to the valley floor. Starting at the top and working your way down then back up again means you can rappel to the breathtaking mid-climb start point,

however Markus and Michael favor far more the descent to the bottom where one feels isolated and completely at one with nature. “Because it makes you have to climb,” says Markus. What he means is that if you don’t complete the climb the only way out is an extremely long hike and as most know, hiking is not a climbers favorite pastime. Since the 70’s the best of the best in the climbing world have made pilgrimages to Verdon. Free climb pioneers set the first bolts into these impressive walls in the Southeast of France a place where top roping was invented. Verdon

marks the origin of sports climbing in Europe. Every single route on this perfect rock has its own story to tell and thanks to the camera we captured some of those timeless stories.

Müssen an ihm einmal die geschichtsträchtigen Routen durchsteigen. Müssen an dieser mächtigen Wand und in der gewaltigen Schlucht die Kraft der Berge spüren. Im April haben maloja-Athlet Markus Bendler und Steffi Hanrieder, Fotograf und Kletterer Michael Meisl sowie Bergführer Gebhard Bendler sich aufgemacht, um genau das zu tun.

Für Steffi war’s die Premiere an diesem magischen Ort; Markus und vor allem Michael waren schon oft dort – und immer wieder kommen sie gerne zurück. In diese herausragende Natur, wo die Geier über den Kletterern kreisen, der Mistral sie aus der Wand blasen möchte und wo das Klettern anders beginnt als anderswo.

Eine Besonderheit von Verdon: Erst einmal geht’s bergab. 300 Meter sind es bis zum Wandfuß. Oder man seilt nur bis zur Wandmitte ab – und klettert gleich mit ordentlich Luft unter den Sohlen. Markus und Michael lieben das Ausgesetzte, das Wilde und die Reihenfolge von oben nach unten und wieder zurück. „Weil man da richtig klettern muss“, sagt Markus. Denn wer die Routen nicht durchzieht, muss wandern, weit wandern – bekanntermaßen nicht gerade die Lieblingsbeschäftigung der Kletter-Spezies. Die vier jedenfalls haben’s ohne Marsch geschafft.

Noch heute pilgern die Besten der Besten ins Verdon – seit den 1970er Jahren. An den imposanten Wänden im Südosten Frankreichs haben die Pioniere des Freikletterns flächendeckend die ersten Bolts gesetzt, dort wurde das Toprope erfunden. Von dort verbreitete sich das Sportklettern in Europa. Jede Route an diesem perfekten Felsen erzählt ihre Geschichte. Wir haben ein paar davon mit der Kamera eingefangen.
