RHINE INSTITUTE PURPOSE:
Before tackling the design phase of this project, I decided to explore the relationship of the film institute to the site itself and the inhabitants of Over-the-Rhine. Only regarding the revitalization of the area, I was shocked to discover the displacement and gentrification aspect of the development of the area as well. Many residents of Over-the-Rhine feel as if their former home is now turning into a tourist attraction and that they are gradually being forced out of the area. I decided to design my film institute as if I were attempting to include and unify both former and new inhabitants of the environment. My design focuses on unity, communication and socialization
PARTI EXPLANATION:
The design of the exterior of my building plays with the push, pull, and collision of orthogonal elements. The interior has a vertical and horizontal linear sequence: as you progress to the back of the space, spaces become more social and as you progress to the upper floors of the building the spaces become more intimate and secluded. SOCIAL STAIR
The social stair is the most integral aspect of the film institute. It serves as both a place of unity and communication and also as an enclosed auditorium. The structure of the building itself serves as the seating; however, there is enough space on each platform for additional seating, such as couches, lounge chairs or regular chairs.
FIRST FLOOR LOBBY This sequence looks into the main lobby from the exit of the cafe area. The grand stair is detailed to the left while the entrance to the social stair is implied
SOCIAL STAIR BALCONY This sequence looks into the upper deck balcony of the social stair. The technology center and library is at the back of the rendering, which is the front of the actual film institute.
GALLERY MULTIPURPOSE This sequence looks into the gallery on the third floor of the film institute from the multipurpose space/lounge. The end of the grand stair leads visitors to the final social space of the institute.
