BRYONY KIMMINGS: CRACKED OPEN BEATING HEART I hope that you can feel its cracked open beating heart. Lara and I lay our souls bare, let our mistakes and darkest moments radiate out into an auditorium with the hope that it somehow makes it okay to not be perfect, to be human and scared and out of control. With lots of laughter and songs to sweeten the medicine of course.
This show is the biggest labour of love I have ever known in my career making theatre. Four years in the making. Scores of wonderful doctors and patients. Some sad deaths. Some huge revelations and life bumps along the way. When you tackle something as big as cancer the chances are it will change you in some way. And I can safely say this show has changed me. Infinitely.
I really hope you enjoy it. We made it for you. #APACIFISTSGUIDE
I guess my hope is that it goes out into the world and changes others too. The aim for this show was to offer alternative stories of cancer. The media version is always survivorship, battles and heroes. This sat badly with me, as a pacifist, as a feminist, as a common person. This show is the true story of trying to write a guide that allows cancer to be hard and painful and lonely and shit. To allow cancer to rub up against other illness and disability, against race, against class.

JUDITH DIMANT: NO RETURN TO NORMAL Considering the subject matter, it’s been one of the most uplifting and joyous periods of my life.
After two years in the clear someone said to me, with slight impatience, that surely it was time to ‘move on’ from the cancer experience. I didn’t have cancer any more and so I should stop defining myself by the illness, or at least I should stop seeing myself in terms of having had cancer. It’s not that simple. Anyone who has had cancer will tell you that once you’ve had the illness and maybe been through chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery—or some combination—you’re never the same again. Your view of the world is different, your attitude to life is different, your confidence in yourself and your body is significantly knocked. Who knows when your body will let you down again? Even after the ‘all clear’ there is no return to ‘normal’.
Hopefully it will shed light on how someone might feel when they’re diagnosed with cancer—or really anything serious—and how that changes things forever. There are also some banging tunes and great dancing.
I was ‘lucky’ to get cancer at the same time I met the extraordinary performance artist Bryony Kimmings, who in turn introduced me to composer Tom Parkinson and writer/performer Brian Lobel. Together we have spent the last couple of years talking, researching and writing about cancer, and about illness and about how we humans cope with the struggle of ill health and possible death.
