TOWER THEATRE, SEPTEMBER 28 - OCTOBER 15, 2011

DIRECTOR’S NOTE ..... Half-Real builds upon two previous interactive works created by The Border Project, Trouble on Planet Earth and Escape from Peligro Island. Both were based on the format of the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books, where the audience can collectively steer the direction of the story, akin to the way the individual reader can in the original books. To realise this interactivity, we collaborated with media artist Matthew Gardiner to create a wireless controller called the Zigzag. Like a Wii remote, the Zigzag responds to movement, and allows you to make a series of choices during the performance that control what you will see. Making these works ignited a new possibility – what if we could make a show where the audience is playing a game? The game would be to investigate a mystery, and at the end to determine the culprit. Implicit to this game would be an interrogation of perception and how it builds our understanding of the truth.

In making Half-Real we wanted to reference the sophisticated aesthetics of computer gaming and translate them into a theatrical space. We envisioned an immersive projected environment that could transport the performers into a myriad of locations, display the user interface for the game itself, and represent a range of smaller characters. The incredible video design in this work is a synthesis of the talents of system designer Michael Marner and video artist Chris More. Michael’s unique methods of augmenting 3D objects and tracking performers have been coupled with Chris’s transformative content. We hope you enjoy the game! SAM HAREN

The Border Project is a contemporary performance ensemble committed to exploring the future language of live performance. We create performance that engages and communicates with an audience that traditional theatre has left behind, using a language that reflects the time and place that we live in – where we are surrounded by the collision of sound and images from videos, pop music, film, television and cyber-media.
