DIRECTOR’S NOTE Never work with superheroes. Theatre is not their medium. They struggle remembering large slabs of text. I’m not sure if I like them. Sure, they are big business, utopian role models conjuring up geek fandom, they keep afloat Hollywood and give children the power to overcome their fears. But I suspect they are too self-absorbed to make decent dinner party guests, and conversation is important to me. Ensemble member and actor in Super Discount, Brian Tilley, has an encyclopaedic knowledge on all things with cape and X-ray vision. I like Brian, so for the moment I’m prepared to work with the super folk. In fact Brian’s immersive-like obsession was our first departure point for the making of this work. The way Brian sees it, superheroes are outsiders shunned by society and he can relate to that. They are also cracked vessels. Brian: Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man, he has a very nasty heart condition right? Bruce: Yep. Brian: And in Thor, Thor’s alter ego Dr Donald Blake he was lame, he was cripple at the leg. Bruce: Aha. Brian: Yeah, that’s the original Thor in the books. Bruce: Yes. Brian: Rogue in X-Men can’t touch anyone without harming them. Bruce: I see. Brian: All superheroes have a hurdle to overcome. Bruce: Right you are, Brian.

Our second creative departure point was a conversation in 2011 between our ensemble and guest actor David Woods regarding the moral and aesthetic dilemma of able-bodied actors playing disabled characters. Luckily I had the video camera running at the time, despite Scott Price telling me I should turn it off due to privacy issues. The transcribed conversation appears as the fifth scene in the performance. Sorry Scott. Our recent work has been conceived around elaborate scenography and luscious soundtrack, creating an otherworldly environment for the stage. As one of the actors commented on the design of Super Discount, “there is nothing to hide behind. Where can we hide? It should be no surprise that theatre, like us, is fragile. In this work, the actors, alongside the audience, hold the narrative complexity within their hands. A deliberate paring back, an economy fills the space, our senses are asked to focus solely on the actors and their words. To be on stage without spectacle is a heroic artistic expedition. My thanks to the actors who have no trouble remembering their large slabs of text. Their fearless exploration to expose our individual and collective sense of inability permeates this performance. I would also like to thank all at Malthouse Theatre and Sydney Theatre Company, in particular Marion Potts, Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton for their part in bring this work into being. Bruce Gladwin
