welcome to season 2012
At heart, I see theatre as a series of conversations. Wide-ranging and often colour-saturated conversations that test and expand our vocabularies and give our humanity a thorough workout. The Wild Duck is a conversation about loyalty, about families, about past choices that are capable of devouring our future. This awardwinning production brings Ewen Leslie back to the Merlyn with an amazing cast that includes Toby Schmitz and Anita Hegh. Blood Wedding riffs on these themes, but also celebrates language, culture and our place in the world. Icon of Spanish theatre and film, Mariola Fuentes, leads a multi-lingual Australian cast through Lorca's great story. Pompeii, L.A., a brand new play by Melbourne writer Declan Greene, shows us a world on the verge of an apocalypse, through the eyes of a child star. It's a funny, if scarifying, reflection of our vanity and self-obsession.
2012 at Malthouse Theatre is the year of change. The building is pulsing with the energy of a new blend of people, ideas are galvanising artists and igniting our collective imagination. Firstly, join us for an entire year of great works: we are declaring our hand upfront, proud of the amazing breadth of productions on offer and confident that you will want to come on board for the full journey. We mix what we do well with some brand new experiences. From the reworking of classical texts like the Oedipus myth and the celebration of much loved performers like Bille Brown and Paul Capsis to companies and genres rarely seen at Malthouse Theatre: the contemporary circus company Circa is perhaps one of Australia's most successful international exports having played to full houses across the globe. Windmill Theatre coaxes our shorter patrons into the building, ideally with their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends for the modern family's Pinocchio. This production resounds with what we all want for children – to be able to grow up with a suite of engaging conversations about the world.
OPERA XS punctuates the mid-point of our season. We empty the Beckett, fill it with comfy sofas and cuddle up around the winter solstice with some mulled wine and custom-made opera. Music by Purcell in the re-working of Rawcus and Chamber Made's Another Lament, a work in progress by Deborah Cheetham and her company Short Black Opera Company, perhaps some oneon-one madrigals, an open-mike night and a few improvised operas led by one of our favourite and most charismatic conductors, Victorian Opera's Richard Gill.
2
These conversations rely hugely on the calibre of those participating. The Malthouse is consistently fuelled by Melbourne's independent artists and the small to medium companies that account for much of the cultural excitement that happens in Australia: artists like Raimondo Cortese, Daniel Schlusser, Marg Horwell, Declan Greene, Jane Montgomery Griffiths, The Sisters Hayes and our wonderful Company in Residence, Four Larks. Add to these the international and national talents of Tina C, of choreographer Vicki Van Hout and we have a fantastic offer for you. These are all theatre makers with the dynamism and imagination to conjure a fresh and unique perspective on the world we live in. There are generally two sorts of audience members – those who lean forward and those who lean back. Our audiences love Malthouse Theatre because it invites them to lean forward in their seats; they are adventurous and engaged and are interested in the big picture. Our job is to keep your emotions alive and your arms uncrossed, to meet you at the invisible line. We take that contract very seriously. I hope you'll enjoy 2012 as much as we will.

Are there some truths it’s better not to know? Winner of three Helpmann Awards (2011), including Best Play, this taut, stripped-back rendition of a modern classic never lets up. Director Simon Stone has developed from a wunderkind of Melbourne’s indie theatre to an established force on Australia’s mainstages. Here he transplants Ibsen’s characters into the contemporary world in a new play tailor-made for an astonishing cast led by Ewen Leslie. Hjalmar Ekdal grew up rich but scandal cast him into poverty. Now he lives in a tiny flat with his father, his wife, his daughter and a duck. When his old friend Gregers Werle returns with unfinished business, the truth Gregers brings could shatter the world Hjalmar has built around himself. A bittersweet portrait of family dysfunction, deception and denial, The Wild Duck resounds for a new age.

Who's this Tina C telling us there's a crisis? Country music celebrity, US presidential candidate and now global icon for peace, Tina C is on an Australasian mission. "I know there is tension in your land about the relationship between the non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal people. I know it goes back a long way and I wanna help through the healing power of country music." Tina C’s unique mix of insightful thought, politics, comedy and catchy songs like ‘You Built A Rabbit Proof Fence Around My Heart’ will make you look at this issue through new eyes, regardless of your background. Tax your brain, break your heart, laugh at things you never thought you were allowed to, and leave with a spirit of resounding optimism! After all, how bad can anything be when singing along to ‘A Pub With No Beer’?

Hell hath no fury like an actor ignored... Meet Bruscon: national treasure, intellect nonpareil, and finest living actor to grace the stage. But what happens when a talent that knows no bounds is dropped into a tiny hamlet more notable for the number of local pigs than its appreciation of the theatre? Playwright Thomas Bernhard, himself a relentless self-mythologiser and one of the great writers of the twentieth century, takes no prisoners in this rampage of satire on art, celebrity and the cult of personality. In Bruscon is crystallised the artist whose head won’t fit through doors — an ego that has outgrown reality itself. But beneath the wit lies the profound concern about how such monsters are created, and why their excesses provide us with an endless, grotesque fascination even while we abhor them. Director Daniel Schlusser shapes this wry drama around the protean genius of Bille Brown while the inimitable Barry Otto’s beleaguered innkeeper attempts to meet Bruscon's absurd demands.

"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music." Nietzsche
The phenomenon of dancing mania has left a mysterious trail through history – entire communities infected with a spontaneous urge to dance until they literally drop. It's suicide with a backbeat, but what's behind these lethal outbreaks? The devil's drumming or religious ecstasy? Neurological decay or otherworldly arrival? A riot of motion and mayhem that spans from medieval rites to modern day marathons of mass movement, The Plague Dances is a dance of death with a contagious undercurrent. Four Larks has emerged as one of the country's most dynamic new ensembles. In the most unexpected locations, they have created a series of transformative junkyard operas that blend lush visual assemblages with mesmerising original live scores. As Malthouse Theatre's 2012 Company in Residence, Four Larks will have the opportunity to captivate new audiences with their unique brand of theatre. Clear your dance card.

Throughout history the circus in all of its forms has returned obsessively, incessantly, to the strangest and most mystifying animal of all: the human. Now, Australia's world-famously inventive and intelligent proponent of the form is presented by Malthouse Theatre in a performance that stretches the limits of what bodies can be. Provocative, affecting and always unexpected, CIRCA dispenses with the hoopla and cuts straight to the quick. KEEP UP! Mind-bending aerial displays, unfettered acrobatics and the slap and shudder of bodies pushed to extremes — all there, but this is no mindless diversion. Dragging the language of traditional circus arts kicking and screaming into the relentless throb of the twenty-first century, Circa creates spectacle that somehow speaks to something deeper: our need for connection, our fears of failure and hopes for triumph, and to the spaces we inevitably share.

In Yolngu painting, bir'yun describes the brilliance, shimmer and shine of a pattern that seems to move before the eyes, animated by the essence of ancestral forces. This is the inspiration for Vicki Van Hout's Briwyant, a work of choreographic dexterity and interdisciplinary innovation that brings to the stage an experience both ageless and fleeting; a moment of connection. Dance, dynamic projections and a layered, textured soundscape will transport audiences well beyond the confines of the theatre into a realm of literal and figurative stories. With precision and a wholly original vision of Indigenous dance, Van Hout evokes, with compelling conviction, a future for the form that teams humour, history and raw physicality.

wedding
Married life is a killer. In this remarkable bilingual production directed by Marion Potts, the lush lyricism of Federico García Lorca's writing is wedded to a contemporary sensibility utterly of the now. Devastating romance, a clash between desire and tradition, a rich paean to the Spanish soil and its culture of passion and ritual — Lorca’s tour de force is all of these things. Here, with music by Tim Rogers, and a cast of actors from across the globe, Blood Wedding will speak afresh of love’s impossible magnetism, with the rhythms and poetry of Spanish as the refrains to which this timeless drama insistently returns.

We know how the Oedipus story ends: he murders his father and unwittingly marries his mother. But where did this shattering tragedy begin? On the Misconception of Oedipus turns its eye to Jocasta and Laius, the parents who birthed a child that would bring about their downfall, and in so doing brought into the world more than a man — they created a myth. Can we really say what Oedipus’ crime was? Attempting to recreate the true turn of events may actually be an impossible task, as memories lie, and unseen forces (call it science or blame it on the gods) will always shape our destiny. This unprecedented take on one of history’s most enduring legends, is a theatrically fearless and unexpected excavation into the murky love that built a tragedy.

A journey that begins at a kitchen table plunges into a sprawling family history and a fitting tribute to a much-loved matriarch. In 1948, Angela left Malta. Having gathered up five children, she sailed out, leaving poverty and war behind. Her destination: Australia. Told simply and truthfully, Angela’s Kitchen is a revealing and evocative piece of autobiographical theatre from Paul Capsis. By turns hilarious and deeply moving, the life of one of our most versatile performers and the love that inspired him unfolds with a stirring grace. Paul’s supporting cast is the wealth of experience that an enormous family gave him, its dozens of members as complex and flawed as any creation of literature. Drenching it all is Angela’s love, the grandmother whose strength and fragility will resonate like the finest of arias, and whose journey came to echo the voyage of the twentieth century in miniature. A life lived in a kitchen, but one which reaches far beyond.

Once there was a lonely man with lots of love to give. He wanted a child so much that he carved himself a beautiful little boy. But the boy wanted the world and the latest designer sneakers. He wanted fame, celebrity and to walk on the wild side. He was lured by temptation and the love of a blue girl. This woodenhead wanted more than his father could possibly give, and so he ran away to get it. This is his story. Based on the classic tale by Carlo Collodi and from the team that brought you the six-time Helpmann Award nominated Wizard of Oz (2009), Pinocchio is boldly retold as a witty, gothic, rocking, music theatre spectacular; a mix of old time theatre fun and a celebration of the ‘whatever’ generation. Alex searches for life on a distant moon; Daniel begs an answer of the poets they cannot provide. And while attentions are elsewhere, a marriage melts into memory. Dorothy Porter's verse novel shifts from the vastness of space to the minute gaps between us. Love may come undone, but like light from a long-dead star its radiance can continue to move us. The late Porter is such a light, still illuminating Australia's literary landscape. Wild Surmise is a conversation, and it is its maker's inimitable voice ringing out among the many, both real and imagined, that chorus in this evocative work. Marion Potts and Jane Montgomery Griffiths last worked together on 2010’s Sappho... in 9 Fragments. They now realise this essentially Melbourne epic, in a work that reminds us that great poetry is not a thing, but an action.

Los Angeles is burning. And he's enjoying the view. Take a seat next to that child star. You know the one. Used-up, spat-out, stuck on the fast-track to selfdestruction. But now he's tearing the whole world down with him. Declan Greene, one of this generation's most electric playwrights, creates a schizoid eulogy for the American empire, where personal psychology is blurred with the world of the silver screen. Los Angeles is erupting, a damaged young mind scrambles for an escape route and Judy Garland is guiding the way. Director Matthew Lutton transforms this febrile feat of imagination into a series of spectacular acts that refuse all categorisation, creating a hilarious plummet into the anxieties and hysteria of a culture that is turning itself inside out.

Have you noticed how much dance is obsessed with birds? How do different choreographers draw their inspiration from our feathered friends and what is behind the ongoing fascination? Drawing on the talents of Australian dancers, choreographers and the odd ornithologist, join us as we explore why dance is so clucky.
As Marion pointed out in her introduction to 2012, Malthouse audiences are the ones who sit forward. Maybe it’s because we think of more ways to pique your curiosity.

the engine room Propelling the ongoing work of Malthouse Theatre is the Engine Room — our annual commitment to the development of new work.
Malthouse Theatre's Engine Room provides a time and place for creative possibilities. Marion and the Artistic Associates together with independent artists in all genres are quarantining two months of their year for the development of new work to build a future repertoire. In the Engine Room, we start working on a project from its conception — a writer has an idea, a designer sees an image, a director has a hunch. From seeds like these, an incalculable number of possibilities can grow. And the Engine Room provides an opportunity to investigate the best of these, using the skills, instincts and insights of our senior artists together with the finest collaborators. 2012's production of Blood Wedding came from this process and some subscribers were present at our test of the idea in 2011. The results may not be seen immediately and that is half the joy — the slow simmering of ideas can elicit richer, deeper understandings and outcomes.

malthouse greenlight We aspire as a company and as individuals to a sustainable practice — creating a positive legacy for our artists, our audiences and our planet.
Making theatre performance can be a hungry pursuit, but we are striving to reduce our appetite.
• We are actively monitoring our energy consumption with an Eniscope, so that we can adjust and improve our energy efficiency.
We are focusing our attention on changing our behaviour and implementing locally produced, sustainable products and designs that can make a tangible difference to our energy consumption.
• We continue our behavioural changes: recycling more products (including paint, steel and e-waste) and turning off electrical equipment when not in use. New procurement strategies are now in place so we buy ecologically and ethically sound products where we can.
• Our foyer and auditoria lights have been upgraded with LED technology, reducing power consumption by 75% per bulb, while our old light bulbs have been recycled.
• On an artistic level, we have commissioned a new work tackling the topic of climate change from Torque Show, in conjunction with our partners Tipping Point Australia and the Dara Foundation. Happiness, an innovative education initiative going into its third year, asks senior school students to contemplate climate change through theatrical forms. And, throughout the year, Malthouse will host special events inspiring us to think and act green as part of Limited Editions.
• We have invested in rechargeable microphone battery kits instead of using new batteries for every performance, reducing the environmentally damaging waste from discarded batteries.

learn with us We never stop playing. Malthouse Education puts you at the heart of the action as artists, co-devisers and collaborators. At our core, we work with inspired artists (sometimes teachers, sometimes students) and you’re invited to learn with us.
All of our programs use professional artists working on our stages and we are renowned for VCE-specific workshops and seminars. A highlight of our program is Happiness, an in-school and in-theatre project for young ensembles to grapple with the biggest and most affecting issue of our time — climate change. Offered to students in Years 9 and 10, Happiness will be on tour to a venue near you in 2012, supported by VISY. Stay tuned too for a new work, Slow Motion Catastrophe, for the Happiness project by Declan Greene (Moth and Pompeii, L.A.), supported by the Ian Potter and Malcolm Robertson Foundations, to be presented here at The Malthouse.
Our seasons are rife with wild imaginings and inspiration on stage, and a series of revelatory workshops, briefings and immersions to connect you, your classmates and your classroom off-stage. We are working to make Malthouse Theatre a place for you as young people, students and teachers. This year, we are increasing the number of matinees and teacher previews, offering travel subsidy for student visitors from regional Victoria and still offering study kits across subject areas and the curriculum to accompany our shows.
