Season 2014

Season 2014

Malthouse Theatre // represents what others ignore and turns eyes to the unexplored. Our audience doesn’t lean back in their seats. We bring them to the edge, with unabated attention and bated breath in anticipation of // what happens next.

Welcome to 2014 As our federal election lands its verdict and we recover from the gritty cut and thrust of political debate, some thoughtful time out is surely welcome in 2014! What better way to think about our place in the world than by sharing a room with other people, taking a moment away from our devices to be carried by soaring music, to be moved by the power of language, or to laugh at our own foibles ... This season’s program continues Malthouse Theatre’s quest to provoke and challenge. We entertain with irreverence and the richest of theatrical languages. The often uproarious process of theatre-making itself comes under fire in Simon Stone’s version of The Government Inspector. Chinese director Meng Jinghui takes on pressing ethical questions that cross cultures and unite us globally with his take on Brecht’s The Good Person of Szechuan. The brutality of the Melbourne streetscape holds us momentarily hostage – and then accountable – in Peta Brady’s poetic Ugly Mugs. The elusive holy grail of hope and desire are refracted through two very different major Australian works: Patrick White’s classic Night on Bald Mountain and Iain Grandage’s brand new opera of Tim Winton’s The Riders. How do you, our audience, connect these representations of who we are? How does this jigsaw of productions piece together our collective concerns and aspirations? There is great heart and humanity in the season too. The strains of Aboriginal writer Richard Frankland’s acoustic guitar exquisitely harmonise with and underscore his big-hearted yarns in Walking into the Bigness. Roslyn Oades’ fine audio work, Hello, Goodbye & Happy Birthday, unites 18 and 80-year-olds celebrating these great bookends to the adventure of life. Lucas Jervies’ version of Roald Dahl’s The Witches makes the old feel young and makes the young squeal and scream with delight. Alirio Zavarce’s The Book of Loco then charms and indulges the madness in us all. Finally, Paul Capsis in Ash Flanders and Declan Greene’s Calpurnia Descending is a cheeky, subversive and totally audacious end-of-year treat. THE RABBLE will be our 2014 Company in Residence. It cuts a fine trajectory from important off-site independent work, to Orlando as part of Helium, and through the clamorous responses to Story of O. This is a company that cannot be ignored as it asserts its theatricality and daring in everything it tackles. In all this Malthouse Theatre seeks to create an opening that leads into the abstract world of ideas, emotions and inspiration. This kind of theatrical ‘aperture’ reveals the space in which actors and concepts play. You, our audience, are invited into that space. It is where we can join together for an hour or two of imaginative focus and invigoration; where we can stop and hear ourselves think, provoked by the possibilities of what could transpire. Thanks for leaving the path – for pursuing the discovery of what happens next. Without the generosity of our supporters – ticket buyers, subscribers, donors, Muses, volunteers and sponsors – we wouldn’t be able to present this daring program. Vote with your applause. And of course, resume politics at the bar after the show ... Marion Potts Artistic Director Page / 5

The GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR

The Government Inspector / cons his way to power. The Government Inspector / is, well, a downright nobody. Mistaken for the impending inspector by the town officials, this nobody quickly pretends to be somebody, turning con-man along the way. With a cast of seven actors taking on some 30 roles, this will be one screwball game of pretend. Under the direction of the ever-inventive Simon Stone, the most ridiculous, laugh-out-loud comedy ever written by a Russian, will take a mad-cap turn toward twenty-first century Australia. Written long before the recent election served up such surprise senators, The Government Inspector is an implausible masterpiece for our implausible times, as one sub-ordinary individual / cons his way to power.

“Stone has earned a reputation as one of the boldest, brightest young theatre makers in the country.” — Time Out Created by / Simon Stone after Nikolai Gogol Direction / Simon Stone Set Design / Ralph Myers Lighting Design / Paul Jackson Cast includes / Emily Barclay, Gareth Davies, Greg Stone, Zahra Newman

Frankenstein

Frankenstein // proves nothing is so painful as great and sudden change. Frankenstein / as re-imagined by THE RABBLE’s Emma Valente and Kate Davis (Orlando), situates Mary Shelley’s masterpiece in a matriarchal world that worships female fertility. The tormented genius Viktor Frankenstein is consumed by his inability to create life. Driven to terrifying lengths, Viktor subverts the laws of nature and gives birth to a motherless monstrosity. THE RABBLE’s latest production is part traditional gothic horror and part homage to the aesthetics of alchemy. The resulting experience / proves nothing is so painful as great and sudden change.

“THE RABBLE has been a company to watch for some years … one which other companies will be well-advised to take notice of.” — RealTime “theatre like no one else dares to make” — aussietheatre.com Created by / Kate Davis & Emma Valente Direction / Emma Valente Set & Costume Design / Kate Davis Lighting & Sound Design / Emma Valente Cast includes / Pier Carthew, Robert Menzies, Dana Miltins, Mary Helen Sassman

Night on Bald mountain Night on Bald Mountain // confronts the corrosion of one’s better self. Night on Bald Mountain / has been called Patrick White’s attempt at the first Australian tragedy. A new nurse has arrived to take care of the notorious Mrs Sword at the house on Bald Mountain. Despite best intentions, she finds herself swept up in the machinations and preoccupations of a cast of restless oddities. Ultimately, the flaws of human nature soon emerge as forces beyond all control. Malthouse Theatre Associate Director Matthew Lutton (The Bloody Chamber) and his magnificent ensemble cast take on a true classic of the Australian repertoire. A visceral and visually intense theatre experience, Lutton strands White’s characters upon a landscape that rises to life. As they all struggle against the realities of the world they inhabit, each one tragically / confronts the corrosion of one’s better self.

“an astonishing play portraying White’s desolate vision of a world that must destroy itself before there can be hope” — The Sun-Herald “Julie Forsyth can bring all manner of tears to your eyes in the space of a few heartbeats. She is unquestionably our greatest tragi-comedienne” — The Sydney Morning Herald By / Patrick White Direction / Matthew Lutton Set & Costume Design / Dale Ferguson Lighting Design / Paul Jackson Composition & Double Bass / Ida Duelund Hansen Cast includes / Peter Carroll, Ida Duelund Hansen, Julie Forsyth, Melita Jurisic

Ugly Mugs

Ugly Mugs // lurk around every corner. Ugly Mugs / are the faces that modern life finds more convenient to ignore than confront; the violent clients of a culture concealed. Inspired by her work supporting Melbourne sex workers, Peta Brady (The Slap) writes and stars in this discordant experience laced with pitch-black wit. With dreamlike shifts between time and place, it weaves a complex and uneasy drama about the disturbing realities of life on the streets. Challenging to the last, Ugly Mugs drip-feeds doses of brutality and banality until the truth is finally strong enough to lift its head. Brady’s characters wade through the aftermath of violence, leaving us in no doubt about the dark truths that / lurk around every corner.

“If we are willing to allow sex workers to be exposed to horrendous violence while we pontificate about the morality of prostitution, then not only are we complicit, we are morally vacuous” — The Sydney Morning Herald By / Peta Brady Direction / Marion Potts Set & Costume Design / Michael Hankin Lighting Design / Lucy Birkinshaw Cast includes / Peta Brady

The Witches

The Witches // proves magic is real and wickedly fun. The Witches / re-imagines Roald Dahl’s twisted yet endearing story as a family-friendly one-man performance. Acclaimed star Guy Edmonds single-handedly conjures a cast of gnarled old women, squeaky children and everything in between for an experience as ghastly as it is gleeful. Thrilling, chilling and a whole lot of fun – bring the kids and join an orphaned boy as he outsmarts a world of child-hating, child-smelling witches and / proves magic is real and wickedly fun.

“Edmonds appears to relish finding the voices and physicality of the boy narrator, his grandmother, the naughty kid Bruno, and a ‘Hitleresque’ Grand High Witch.” — The Sydney Morning Herald “Witches, with silly black hats and cloaks riding on broomsticks? No. They’re for fairy tales. I’m talking of real witches.” — Roald Dahl By / Roald Dahl Based on the stage play by / David Wood Direction / Lucas Jervies Set & Costume Design / Hugh O’Connor Lighting Design / Sian James Holland Dramaturgy / Chris Summers Cast / Guy Edmonds

The Good Person of Szechuan The Good Person of Szechuan // crosses the line. The Good Person of Szechuan / is a prostitute – poor but optimistic and generous. Through her goodwill and charity, she stands as a lone bright spot in a society that has become dark and greedy. Impressed by her righteousness, the gods reward her. From then, Shen Tei has something to lose. Directed by celebrated avant-garde Chinese theatre-maker Meng Jinghui, Bertolt Brecht’s realist parable is rich in moral complexity. As Shen Tei remains committed to upholding her values, the audience must decide whether her behaviour is justified or if it / crosses the line.

“Meng’s works, each more stunning than the last, all bear the mark of a Meng-style passion about life, rebellion, humor and satire. His achievements have earned him the reputation of being both popular and avant-garde, a rare feat in the world of art.” — Beijing Review “reminds us of what can happen when, like Shen Tei, our best theatre artists don’t let commercial concerns empty out a work’s richness of soul” — The New Yorker By / Bertolt Brecht New translation by / Tom Wright Direction / Meng Jinghui Cast includes / Daniel Frederiksen, Bert LaBonté, Genevieve Morris

The Book of Loco The Book of Loco // re-enacts one man’s duel with his own sanity. The Book of Loco / is a revealing, hilarious and destabilising theatrical experience. Alirio Zavarce writes and stars in a semi-autobiographic demonstration of his ‘Theory of Rational Madness’. Interweaving tales of his personal journeys – both geographical and emotional – Zavarce will leave you lucidly confused and highly amused. With the audience’s willing participation, he gives credence to the paradox that sometimes you have to be mad to stay sane. Winner of the Best Theatre Production award at the 2013 Adelaide Fringe Festival, The Book of Loco bravely and publicly / re-enacts one man’s duel with his own sanity.

“Zavarce delivers a surgically incisive, at times heartbreakingly poignant and resoundingly beautiful exploration of the world in all its ‘rational madness’.” – Adelaide Fringe Review By / Alirio Zavarce Direction / Sasha Zahra Set & Costume Design / Jonathon Oxlade Lighting Design / David Gadsden Projection / Chris More Sound Design / Duncan Campbell Produced by / Janine Peacock, Loose Canon Art Services Cast / Alirio Zavarce

Walking into the Bigness Walking into the Bigness // on a hunt for meaning. Walking into the Bigness / tallies the experiences, losses and learnings that amount to a man. From a 12-year-old abattoir worker, to an investigator for the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, these are Richard Frankland’s yarns exactly as he spins them – unvarnished and rich in blackfella humour. Under the direction of Wayne Blair (The Sapphires, Redfern Now), Richard’s tales are given universal voice by a diverse cast. Acoustic melodies lift the storytelling as Richard himself accompanies on guitar. In turns moving and funny, this intimate work traverses life’s undulating terrain / on a hunt for meaning.

“Without being didactic Frankland’s writing highlights the issues that exist in the Koorie community and does so with honesty, sensitivity and strength.” — Australian Stage Story by / Richard Frankland and Wayne Blair Written by / Richard Frankland Direction / Wayne Blair Dramaturgy / Chris Mead Cast includes / Paul Ashcroft, Luisa Hastings Edge, Rarriwuy Hick Musician / Richard Frankland

The Riders

The Riders // give chase to elusive hopes and transient identities. The Riders / is a brand new Australian opera based on Tim Winton’s Bookernominated classic. Composed by the acclaimed Iain Grandage with the libretto by Alison Croggon, this anticipated collaboration between Malthouse Theatre and Victorian Opera also unites respective artistic directors Marion Potts and Richard Mills. Scully’s wife, the mother of his child, has disappeared. Her absence looms large as those left behind look for answers, desperate to recover their lost sense of belonging. Follow Scully and his daughter as they pursue people, places and pasts that have escaped beyond reach. Stirring and strange, Winton’s prose is translated into a modern opera that could be taken as a warning not to / give chase to elusive hopes and transient identities.

“Here is one of Australia’s best writers, one admired for his deep emotional insights and his spiritual evocation of place. Through his writing he has helped a generation define themselves as modern Australians and reminded older generations of lost ideals and of values worth cherishing and passing on.” — Perth Now By / Iain Grandage and Alison Croggon Based on the novel by / Tim Winton Conducted by / Richard Mills Direction / Marion Potts Set & Costume Design / Dale Ferguson Lighting Design / Matt Scott Cast includes / Jessica Aszodi, Jerzy Kozlowski, David Rogers-Smith, Barry Ryan, Dimity Shepherd

Hello, Goodbye & Happy Birthday Hello, Goodbye & Happy Birthday // celebrates the effects of time on life. Hello, Goodbye & Happy Birthday / interrogates and celebrates different perspectives on life: some looking forward and some looking back. Scripted from intimate real-life conversations with people approaching their 18th or 80th birthdays, this documentary performance is the creative culmination of extensive research by Malthouse Theatre 2013 Female Director in Residence, Roslyn Oades (I’m Your Man). You are invited to a birthday bash with a cast of characters from the bookends of adult life. Examine their thoughts, fears, aspirations and memories in a work that / celebrates the effects of time on life.

Calpurnia Descending Calpurnia Descending // ignites a backstage Battle Royale. Calpurnia Descending / sends up the dangers of fame with the tale of Beverly Dumont – a reclusive, drunken, Depression-era Broadway washout. Beverly limps towards obscurity until a naive ingénue appears offering a final shot at glory. It’s the role of a lifetime, but the chalice soon proves poisoned and both women are drawn into a world of paranoia, sleaze and bloody, unrelenting ambition. The latest work from queer ‘DIY’ theatre duo Sisters Grimm (The Sovereign Wife, Little Mercy) stars the inimitable Paul Capsis (Angela’s Kitchen) and Ash Flanders. Rich in wit and piercing cultural critique, this fabulously entertaining work takes two of Australia’s finest male actresses and / ignites a backstage Battle Royale.

“[Sisters Grimm] write fast and on the fly ... and the finished product is so good that critics and audiences fall at their feet in adulation.” — Concrete Playground
