The College cultivates the whole pupil Pupils at the College enjoy a balanced education, which aims through an excellent academic, pastoral and co-curricular programme to develop their individual intellectual, physical, social and emotional well-being. 2. The College values community well-being and provides a safe and supportive learning environment Pupils, parents and staff are provided with a secure, safe and supportive environment to promote personal, social and emotional well-being and growth.
3. WELCOME FROM THE HEADMASTER I do hope that you enjoy our latest edition of the Malvern View, which highlights the many activities our pupils have been involved in throughout the first term of 2019-20. Malvern College Egypt is all about providing new opportunities and exceptional learning experiences and I would like to thank all the staff at the College for organising events, giving up their time and providing our pupils with such a wealth of fun learning opportunities. As I look through this magazine, I realise just how far we have come as a community in the past three years. I hope you enjoy looking through the many opportunities we have offered our children as much as I have.

Orientation Day We were delighted to see the parents and new pupils ring in the new academic year. Our wonderful community welcomed the parents and new pupils. We were all very excited for the discoveries to come this academic year, with an additional 150 pupils and our first Upper Sixth class! Parents arrived to see the schedules of their child or children’s assigned classroom, teacher, and bus number. It was a real pleasure to see so many parents involved in their children’s education.

The first day of school was heartwarming for all teachers and staff at MCE. With hope and excitement, we will see what the year ahead has in store for us. As famous American writer Mark Twain once wrote, “The secret to getting ahead is getting started.�

Info Sessions
Parents attended our Information and Coffee mornings, where they first had a small information session of helpful information for the year ahead, after which the parents met and chatted with our Community Liaison Officer, Heads of Years, Heads of Stages, and Heads of Schools in the piazza.

MCI Visit
It was a pleasure to have guests from Malvern College UK and Malvern College International at MCE. As a growing College and as a part of the Malvern family of schools, MCE works closely with MCUK and MCI. Director of International Schools Mr Allan Walker, Director of Education Mr Eamonn Mullally and MCUK Headmaster Mr Keith Metcalfe in his first visit ever to MCE. Their visit formed part of our termly Board of Management meeting and allowed them to meet with a range of pupils and teachers to gain an insight into our progress.

OPEN DAYS Our open days were filled with prospective parents who participated in an introductory information session, followed by a tour of the College by our excellent student ambassadors as well as various members of staff. The Q&A at the end in our piazza allowed for any questions to be answered. This was a great chance for any prospective parents to see the quality of education provided at the College.

Britich Council
GL Workshop We were happy to receive a workshop by GL Education that focused on understanding assessments. The workshop was attended by some of our teachers and those from other top Cairo schools. Teachers participated in activities and worksheets to help facilitate understanding of Cognitive Abilities Test, Progress Test Series and Pupil Attitudes to Self and School Survey. This workshop helped our teachers to better understand and therefore provide more accurate assessments, as needed, for our pupils.

Money Management Strategies In September our Sixth Form pupils were lucky to participate in interactive workshops given by Blooms Egypt. The pupils participated in the workshop that focused on money management strategies, sources of finance and investment channels. The pupils were split into four teams, each assigned a pretend one million dollars with a big company like Facebook or Google. The four teams then had to compete against one another to see which team could make the most profit. These sessions helped pupils expand their critical thinking and financial literary skills. The workshops also helped pupils to enhance their Malvernian Qualities, namely, ambition and independence.

House
Debate
Lewis and Elgar Houses competed in a heated debate regarding whether everyone should be vegan or not. The Heads of Houses first did a coin toss to see who would go first. Lewis House began the competition, although in the end, Elgar won, with speaker number 2 from Elgar house also winning the award for Best Speaker. Both sides presented excellent points regarding the topic of veganism, using arguments on bodily health, morality, economic concerns, as well as concern for the health of our planet. Well done to all speakers of the event!

Etiquette Event The College hosted an Etiquette Event for children ages 3-5 from nurseries around Cairo. A practice meet and greet was followed by an “ultimate parents guide” on how to support your child’s communication skills, and finally, a bullying awareness workshop.

British Council University Fair
The British Council University Fair was a great chance for our Sixth Formers to ask questions they had about universities and the application process. Five universities from the UK were available to discuss this new and exciting journey ahead. This was a great opportunity for the pupils to understand what to expect and how to prepare for university.

Primary Prefect Investiture Our Prefect Investiture Ceremony took place in our theatre on the 10th of October. Dr Azza El Sherbiny, Dr David Hammond, Mr Wayne Maher, Mr Richard Moore, and Mrs Sally Dibb-Holland welcomed the Prefects. The presentation of Head Boy and Head Girl, and Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl, was given by Mr Wayne Maher, followed by a presentation of prefects given by Dr Azza El Sherbiny, a presentation of House Captains by Mr Jonathan Bailey and Mrs Rachel Hardwick, and finally, a thank you given by Mrs Sally Dibb-Holland. We are very proud of our prefects - well done to them all!

Secondary Prefect Investiture The Secondary School Investiture is one of the most prestigious events on the Malvern College Calendar. With an array of singers and musicians in the Year 7 and 8 choir, it is clear that the talent doesn’t just stop at sport. The Secondary School Leadership Team are incredibly proud of the pupils who took part in the Investiture- for some it was a daunting opportunity, but one they held in high regard. Congratulations to the newly invested Head Boy, Fouad Khodeir and Head Girl, Mariam El Moushy!

Family F
Our first ever MCE Family Fun Day was a huge success, with over 800 attendees. Taking place on our football and basketball courts as well as in the piazza, the day featured an acrobat, a magician, clowns, a DJ, and vendors selling cotton candy, slushies, smoothies, Chinese food, sushi, and Oriental desserts. Pupils, parents, and their families and friends mingled and walked around the stalls. Occasionally there were interactive activities for all, including Zumba and Yoga. A live band marched around, delighting everyone with their music. All in all, it was a very wholesome event with lots going on in all areas! It was a great event to strengthen the Malvern College Egypt community and rapport!

Bake Sale
Both Elgar and Foster Houses sold cakes to raise money for charity. Primary and Secondary students were asked to make home-made cakes to sell to raise money for their House charities. Years 2 and above visited the bake sale and chose cakes to buy whereas Early Years had cakes in their own classes and made a donation. The amount raised was over 10,000LE with both funds, the Elgar Charity Fund and the Foster Charity Fund, receiving over 5,000LE. It was a community-building event, with Elgar House earning 100 House points as the winners!

On the 18th of November our IB ab initio Spanish group participated in a Flamenco dance workshop led by a professional Flamenco dancer, Laura Salinero, who was formerly part of the Madrid Flamenco Group. Speaking almost solely in Spanish, it was an immersive experience for the pupils to learn new words and phrases. The pupils proved themselves as true risktakers and good communicators, having to work hard to understand and be able to communicate in a relatively unfamiliar language with a native speaker.

REMEMBRANCE DAY Our College held tributes on Remembrance Day, including 2 minutes of silence, to remember the fallen from past conflicts. Poppies were available to any who wanted to donate, in order to commemorate all those who served, sacrificed, and changed our world- the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in war. 2019 marks 101 years since the war. Lest we forget.

Parent Teacher Consultation Day It was lovely to see so many parents come in for our Parent Teacher Consultation Day. Parents play a vital role in their children’s education and learning journey. We have high hopes that the feedback from this day from the MCE teachers will be thoroughly helpful. Working closely with parents is crucial to provide the best environment both at home and at school to allow our pupils to grow holistically.

Egyptian Dress Up Day Our pupils dressed up on Egyptian Dress Up Day, paying homage to the lovely host country our College is situated in. Pupils dressed up in army outfits, different types of “galabeya” (traditional Egyptian garment), “tarboush” (folklore hat) and pharaonic costumes of Ancient Egypt. It was exciting to see pupils come in with outfits originating from different parts of Egypt and from different eras. The pupils had a lot of fun celebrating “Om El Dunya” (Mother of the World) and participating in Egyptian-themed activities in the classes.

Dress Up Day
Halloween this year was celebrated in true MCE style; our pupils’ creative costumes were very impressive. The pupils participated in many Halloween themed activities and games. Altogether it was a spooky and exciting day! Thank you to our staff, parents and children for participating in and supporting this fund-raising event. In total we raised over 12,000 EGP for the Lewis Charity, African Hope.

Sixth Form Project with The Early Years What do little kids know? Our Lower Sixth Form IB students spent their lunchtime with the Reception students to explore this question through a series of fun games. The Reception students enjoyed playing the games and the IB students learnt that even at an early age children have a strong sense of right and wrong. It was an enjoyable lunchtime and great fun for all involved.

Project Runway Year 2 have been learning all about fashion as part of their Integrated Curriculum topic. As part of this topic they learned about upcycling and were given an upcycling challenge to do! The challenge was to create an outfit and/or accessories using a bin bag and other upcycled materials. Each class had their own semi-final where the designs were judged and 2 winners were chosen. These winners then participated in our Project Runway assembly in front of the Primary school. They chose a model to wear their design and had to explain what their inspiration was, and where they would wear their design. To help choose a winner, we had an amazing panel of judges, Mrs DibbHolland, Mrs Hardwick, Mr Bailey and Ms Belcher! They added some excitement and glamour to the proceedings! In the end, the designs were just too fantastic to choose only one winner and the joint winners chosen by the judges were Sophia Siag (2M) and Mostafa Abdellatif (2A).

On Thursday, 12th December all of our Early Years pupils performed their wonderful Winter show on stage in the College theatre. With the stage beautifully decorated with professional scenery, our little shining stars sang their hearts out, sending the audience wild! With a total of 185 pupils on stage, our stars sang fantastic Christmas hits, including ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘Goodbye, Snowman’ by Pre-Nursery, ‘Decorate the Christmas Tree’ and ‘Snowflake’ from Nursery, and ‘When Santa Got Stuck Up the Chimney’ by Reception. For their grand finale all pupils sang together a very uplifting ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’. It was so beautiful to see all pupils in professionally-made costumes, which included Christmas trees and elves costumes worn by Pre-Nursery, and fairies and soldier costumes for Nursery and Reception. The whole show was a magical success and their singing was expressive and energetic. For many it was their first time to ‘tread the boards’ and get a real taste of performing on stage. Well done to all pupils involved!

Instead of just singing songs this year, the Performing Arts department decided to put on a proper musical with Years 1 & 2 - and what a show it was! On Monday, December 16th pupils delighted the audience by singing, dancing and acting out the story of how Rudolph got his red nose, which involved some very naughty reindeer, a fairy with a wand that got stolen, and Santa’s problem of his headlights breaking on his sleigh! Fun was had by all putting the show together and the pupils looked fantastic in their professionally made costumes, which included elves, snowmen, snowflakes, rabbits and mice. A special thank you to Joanna Driscoll who stepped in at the last moment when flu hit the cast. She read her extra lines with confidence. Luca Shahid did a grand job of playing a comic Santa. Pamela Aziz was fantastic as the naughty Donder reindeer and everyone felt sorry for Rudolph, played by Pavly Azir, who was being bullied by the other reindeer until he got the best job pulling the sleigh. Junah Helal performed confidently as Fairy Fae, Rudolph’s best friend. Congratulations to all involved, especially to Miss Leen and Mr Ahmed, who spent hours tirelessly working with the pupils so they knew the songs like the back of their hand. The IT department also provided us with some fantastic stage lighting to enhance the show.

On Thursday December 5th the pupils in Years 3 to 6 thoroughly entertained the MCE community with their singing, dancing, instrumental performances and poetry reciting. It really was fantastic to see so many pupils on stage showing off their vocal skills with Winter songs, which have been developed in their choir sessions this term. A special thanks to all the Primary staff who got involved performing solos and duets in the finale, which rounded the show-off with every pupil on stage joining in singing ABBA’s ‘Happy New Year’. Year 6’s rendition of ‘Sleigh Bells’ was most impressive – a piece written with complex 2-part harmony that had been studied carefully in class to get to performance level. This took a lot of time and concentration to learn, so well done!
Other highlights include Jojo from Year 3’s solo in ‘All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth’, who confidently acted the part in character, and Murad Mohamed’s solo vocal performance of Little X’s ‘Panini’. All the Winter songs were beautifully sung by each year group. Year 4 even included choreography into their rendition of ’12 Days of Christmas’. Well done to the two young ladies who did gym performances. Thank you to head boy Reuben Maher and head girl Nancy Younes for compering the show and entertaining the audience as year groups changed on stage. The repertoire, which included ‘Walking In A Winter Wonderland’, ‘White Christmas’ and pop Christmas hits from John Lennon and Slade, really got the audience into the festive mood.

On Wednesday 18th December, the Secondary school performed their Winter concert twice! Once in the morning for the enjoyment of the Primary pupils, then again in the afternoon for parents to watch. The Year 7 and 8 choir performed excellently singing both in parts and in harmony. The Winter-themed hit ‘California Dreamin’ and their Christmas songs medley finale really got the audience in the mood for a holiday! Many of our Secondary students performed solos, including Lilya Sidky, Zeina Hani, Ziad Kandil, Hala Elzayat and Muhaimin Nafie. We even had a guest appearance from Miss Phillips in Year 5, who performed a Cranberries song with Hussein Taha accompanying on electric guitar.
Nisan Harmanci’s performance of Debussy’s ‘Girl with the Flaxen Hair’ was beautiful and serene. Head Boy Fouad Khodair and Head Girl Mariam El Moushy did a grand job of hosting the show, but it was Mariam who really shone with her extra input by performing the wonderful vocal solo ‘Creep’ and also singing an Adele song with the College band. We were also treated to sisters Iffah and Syakirah Ariffin performing a vocal duet, with Iffah accompanying on ukulele, and sisters Riana and Alisha Mohamed performing an Olly Murs pop hit. A very big congratulations to all Secondary students involved - the audiences loved it.

African Hope Charity On the 18th of November pupils from Lewis house had a great experience visiting their charity, African Hope Learning Centre (AHLC). It was great to see the children, play with them and spend a wonderful morning seeing how the money raised at the College is going to such a great cause. AHLC works to use education to provide a better future for African refugee children living in Egypt. We donated 30,000 LE which will help support these children in need by providing quality education.

Trip to The AUC Library On the 19th of November our Sixth Form pupils attended a tour of the AUC library where they were shown how to use extensive resources and proceeded to research sources for their studies. A very positive and beneficial trip, the attained skills of referencing and citation of works will be extremely useful for their future prospects and time in university.

Wadi Degla Trip Year 3 had an amazing outing investigating rocks at the Wadi Environmental Science Centre in Wadi Degla. The pupils had the opportunity to identify rocks by testing how hard they were. They also checked different properties of the rocks, such as porosity, and got their hands dirty by making a conglomerate rock. This was a great learning experience for Year 3, who thoroughly enjoyed being scientists for a whole day!

Malvern College Staff Football Bonanza On the 3rd of October we held our 2nd Football Bonanza, organised by our Director of Sports, Mr Gale, which took place on the AstroTurf. The teams included the PE Dream Team, Greenwoods “One Flew Over Lukaku’s Nest”, HRians, Mahmouds Maintenance Machine, and Security Super Stars. A very exciting game with many draws, the teams were closing in on security but in the end it was the Security Super Stars who won, wearing their matching PSG kits. The players were cheered and heckled on- everyone was there in good spirits!

Golf Day On Saturday 19th of October we hosted our 2nd community golf day at the JW Marriott golf course. 11 teams playing in a four person Texas scramble, with each team consisting of a complete beginner. Staff, parents and pupils from MCE played with staff from NCBIS, MES and AIS. Our director of sports, Mr Sean Gale, fittingly took first place, along with MCE primary student Harrison Gale, MCE PE teacher Ryan Fuller (beginner), and Samir Zaki.

SWIMMING GALA The 24th and 25th November saw MCE host the Primary and Secondary Interhouse Swimming Gala. This was a fantastic spectacle with each House fulfilling every race, and over 150 pupils representing their own House throughout the 2 days. The pupils competed with dedication, resilience and took risks whilst trying out new races to ensure their Houses had racers in all the events, necessary to gain valuable points towards the overall winners’ cup. The results were, in Primary School: Elgar coming first, followed by Lewis with second place, Foster in third place, and Sanger with fourth. In Secondary School the results were as follows: Elgar coming first place again, followed by Foster in second place, Lewis in third place, and Sanger in fourth. It was a fantastic event with every pupil playing their part for their house- which is what the Malvern College Egypt House events are all about, demonstrating many of our Malvern qualities, such as collaboration, resilience and risktaking.

On the 27th of November MCE hosted our first ever basketball competition on our newly surfaced multipurpose court. It was a fantastic spectacle and the Under 11 boys and girls were very excited to be the first team showcasing our basketball court. The girls played first and took an early lead, which was never lost throughout the game, and came out worthy winners 12-2. The boys played in what was an end to end match with the scores ebbing and flowing- altogether a very high tempo end to end match. MCE were leading 10-8 with 10 seconds to go and EBIS scored a last second basket to take the score to 10-10. It was a great match with the fairest result. 44

Co-curricular activities are a strong core of the Malvern education here at MCE. Our extensive range of CCA’s provided allows the pupils to grow in their character and fundamental life skills. This Term we had over 60 CCA’s, including the Smart Art Club where pupils engaged in different careers within the realm of art; Photography Club, led by the Cairo Photography School; Etiquette Club, where pupils were introduced to protocol procedures and standard courteousness in society and the Bescletta, a cycling class with a speed competition. Pupils are always encouraged to try new things and to push themselves to uncover new potentials.

Malvern College Egypt holds a firm commitment to absolute and fundamental values that have stood the test of time. While we refer to them as “Malvern Qualities” they are as relevant in the town of Malvern UK as they are in our city of Cairo. It is through our common emphasis on these values that pupils across the Malvern family of schools will leave well-prepared as global citizens who are ready to both understand and solve issues facing our world in the 21th Century.
