WELCOME FROM ACTING HEADMASTER As we reach the end of another year it is an opportunity for us to reflect as a college community on the year which has passed, the achievements of individuals and the successes we have had as a college. You will see in the Malvern View despite the unprecedented times we have been in, there has been so much to celebrate. Personally, I am so thankful for the hard work, determination and resilience that the students, parents and staff have shown this year despite all the unprecedented challenges, there have been many. I would like to take this opportunity to mention those students who are coming to the end of their time at Malvern College Egypt. The strange end to their time at school is very difficult to take in. The lack of exams and the opportunity to properly celebrate their time as members of our community has been difficult. You will see that we managed to say goodbye in style to our graduates. This event showed there is life after COVID and the heart of Malvern is still beating. On behalf of the whole staff team at Malvern College Egypt, I wish you all a relaxing, peaceful and healthy summer break and we very much look forward to next Academic Year. The school divided each year into two groups, silver and gold, to avoid crowding the school and to maintain a 2-meter safe distance. The pupils settled in harmoniously while adapting to the new safety precautions. It was quite rejoicing to welcome the MCE community to start a new productive academic year.

VIRTUAL CHOIR

Pupils were given the task of recording themselves singing to a backing track, using either Zoom or on their phones or tablets, then sending in the MP4 by either uploading it to Firefly or using a file transfer website. Mr Russell then edited and compiled a video collage of the pupils performing together as a choir, and, with solos, duets, trios and groups, this will be shown in the Primary prizegiving online assembly at the end of term as a special treat. Pupils had a lot of fun practising and recording themselves at home.

MUSIC TECHNOLOGY

At MCE we have the privilege of having a classroom dedicated to Music Technology which is put to very good use each day. Year 6 are currently writing a soundtrack for a regenerative tourist video on China using virtual Chinese instruments, pentatonic melodies and drum loops.

Year 5 have been learning melodies from Vivaldi’s ‘The 4 Seasons’ and are learning how to input MIDI mixed with loops to create an original remix. Year 8 have been studying hooks and riffs in pop music and are practising and recording the bassline riff and melody for ‘Sweet Dreams’ by The Eurythmics (an 80s British classic!). They are using Garageband software to compose a riff with an improvised melody.

STORYTELLING

The children in Nursery have loved the ‘Traditional Tales’ and ‘Nursery Rhyme’ topics. They have explored a variety of stories, including; “The Three Little Pigs”; “The Gingerbread Man”; “Hansel & Gretel” and “Ugly Duckling”. The children made houses for the pigs from various materials and decorated gingerbread men. The children have made links between these stories and our Malvern Qualities. For example, they enjoyed the “Ugly Duckling” story with the moral to always use kind words with our friends to make sure they are happy and feel part of the team every day. Children in Nursery have been busy with many crafts linked to the stories, nursery rhymes, phonic sounds and focused numbers and shapes. They have also impressed us with beginning to count forwards and backwards to and from 10. We look forward to seeing the children again in Term 3, where we will begin our ‘Animals and Lifecycles’ topic.
