The Malvern St James Scholarship Programme At Malvern St James Girls’ School (MSJ) Scholarships acknowledge exceptional individual ability and talent in a particular area. They are competitive and are highly valued by universities and future employers. Exhibitions may also be awarded to recognise impressive ability and potential. A wealth of enrichment and extension activities are available to all girls at MSJ including lectures from inspirational speakers, leadership opportunities and an excellent university preparation programme. In addition to this Scholars are offered a range of bespoke opportunities with considerable value, including mentoring, masterclasses, trips, workshops and regular specialist meetings. All Malvern St James, Scholars are expected to make a significant contribution to all areas of School life. They are expected to participate

in all events relating to their specialism and identify ways in which they can use their talents to contribute to the wider School community. Applicants should have considerable potential; ideally, they will already be achieving the best possible marks in their respective fields, whether academic or practical. In addition, applicants should be outstanding role models for other girls. Scholarships may carry a fee remission, further information along with details of our Bursaries, can be found on page 22. Academic Scholarship: 11+, 13+ and 16+ The Malvern St James Academic Scholar:

Art Scholarship: 11+, 13+ and 16+ The Malvern St James Art Scholar:

Art Scholarship Assessment

•P romotes and supports all Art Department events including Open Mornings, Arts Week and the Junior Schools’ Art Exhibition.

11+ and 13+

•H as an overwhelming passion for the subject and pursues their passion both in and outside of the classroom. •A t 16+ devises and implements, in discussion with the Head of Subject, a programme of activities to run as a Senior School Art Club.

Applicants should: •H ave an interest in Fine Art and / or Textiles which spans both the practical elements of the subject and contextual areas. •H ave knowledge of artists and designers both past and present. •H ave a strong eye for line, form and tone and be able to exhibit this with well executed observational drawings. • F or 11+ and 13+ Scholarships expect to study GCSE Art in Year 10 and 11 and possibly beyond. • F or 16+ Scholarships study A Level Art and will possibly pursue Art as a career option.

• S ubmit a well-presented initial portfolio of work containing a minimum of 10 pieces of recent work showing ability in a range of media. This can include work completed both in and out of School but must include some drawn or painted studies from direct observation. This can include sketchbooks and a range of media such as digital work and photographs of 3D pieces. Your portfolio should be brought to the practical examination and to your interview. •O ne and a half hour observational practical examination. • Panel interview, including portfolio.

16+ • S ubmit a well-presented strong portfolio of work as for 11+ and 13+ above. This should comprise GCSE coursework alongside more personal work. Your portfolio should be brought to the practical examination and to your interview. • Two-hour observational practical examination. • Panel interview including portfolio.

Drama Scholarship: 11+, 13+ and 16+ The Malvern St James Drama Scholar: • Promotes and supports all Drama Department events including Open Mornings and plays performed by other Year Groups. • Is involved with drama productions and workshops, through performance, technical contribution and front of house support. • Participates in Drama Club. • Attends theatre trips and workshops. • Should consider taking Speech and Drama lessons. • At 16+ should run or support Drama Clubs for younger girls.

Applicants should:

• Perform TWO audition pieces learnt by heart: � one from a choice offered by Malvern St James. � one own choice taken from a published play. • Discuss the plays performed, the roles played and the drama experience. • Contribute to a group improvisation and write a short individual written response.

• F or 11+ and 13+ Scholarships study GCSE Drama in Year 10 and 11 and beyond. They should participate in Drama Club.

• Panel interview.

• F or 16+ Scholarships study A Level Drama within the curriculum and be looking at the opportunity of pursuing Drama at Higher Education level or as a career option.

• Provide a Drama CV.

Drama Scholarship Assessment 11+ • Perform TWO audition pieces learnt by heart: · one monologue taken from a published play. · one contrasting piece taken from a published play, poem or other written material. • Discuss the play and pieces performed, the roles played and previous drama experience. • Contribute to a practical workshop consisting of games and improvisation.

16+ • Perform TWO audition pieces learnt by heart: · one from a choice offered by Malvern St James. · one own choice taken from a published play. • Discuss the plays performed, the roles played and the Drama experience. • Complete a written examination. • Panel interview. Scholars benefit from one free 30 minute solo Speech & Drama lesson per week. 9

Music Scholarship: 11+, 13, 16+ The Malvern St James Music Scholar: •M akes a positive contribution to the musical life of the School. •P articipates in concerts and musical ensembles: Orchestra, Choir and Chamber Ensembles as appropriate. •A ttends all appropriate rehearsals and supports the Music Department both in School and in the wider community. •A t Sixth Form takes leadership positions within the Music Department and helps to encourage other musicians in all areas of music making.

Applicants should: • S how considerable potential in their preferred instrument or voice. • I deally offer two instruments for assessment; candidates with only one instrument are nevertheless encouraged to apply.

• F or 13+ Scholarships have reached ABRSM or Trinity College Grade 5 (or equivalent) in their first study and Grade 3 in their second study (either of which may be singing). • F or 16+ Scholarships study A Level Music in the Sixth Form. • F or 16+ Scholarships have reached The ABRSM or Trinity College Grade 6 or equivalent in their first study and Grade 4 in their second study (either of which may be Singing).

Music Scholarship Assessment Candidates are free to perform a contrasting programme of their own choice. Those with an interest in composition are also encouraged to present a portfolio of original compositions and / or arrangements. All candidates will have the opportunity to rehearse with an accompanist prior to the audition.

• F or 11+ Scholarships have reached or be working towards ABRSM or Trinity College Grade 4 (or equivalent) in their first study and Grade 3 in their second study (either of which may be singing).

• First Study: play two pieces of at least Grade 4 standard and aural tests.

• F or 11+ and 13+ Scholarships expect to study Music at GCSE.

16+ • Provide a Music CV. • First Study: play two pieces of at least Grade 6 standard and aural tests. • Second Study: play one piece of at least Grade 5 standard. • Written paper based on general musical knowledge, analysis and musical works for your specialist instrument. • Composition: two ideas will be provided as a starting point for a 16 bar melody for completion. • Panel interview. Scholars benefit from free music tuition on their first instrument.

Riding Scholarship: 11+, 13+, and 16+ The Malvern St James Riding Scholar:

Riding Scholarship Assessment

• I s available and committed to representing Malvern St James at School equestrian events.

•P resentation of Portfolio of Riding achievements and competitions entered over the past 6 to 12 months, with evidence. This could include confirmation of Pony Club tests, newspaper clippings, articles, photographs and video footage.

• Encourages other riders within the School. • Supports all MSJ Riding events.

Applicants should: • Subscribe to a recognised body e.g. Pony Club Branch or Centre, Riding Club, British Eventing, or similar. • Be of a very good competitive Riding standard and regularly participate in a range of organised events e.g. Dressage / Show Jumping / Eventing and at Sixth Form participate in Affiliated Events. • At 11+ should be regularly achieving a minimum jumping level of approximately 70cm. • At 13+ should be regularly achieving a minimum jumping level of approximately 80cm.

Sports Scholarship: 11+, 13+ and 16+ The Malvern St James Sports Scholar:

Sports Scholarship Assessment

•C ommits to training, strengthening and conditioning and matches in her chosen sport(s).

• Provide a CV of sporting achievements.

•R esponds positively to guidance, works well in a team and is an outstanding ambassador for the School. •A t Sixth Form assists with coaching and development of other School sports players.

Applicants should:

•P rovide a detailed reference from an external coach. •C andidates must demonstrate a level of excellence in their chosen sport(s). •P ractical assessment includes a fitness test and further sports skills, which may include lacrosse, hockey, netball, cricket, tennis and swimming (depending on the candidate’s area of expertise).*

•H ave an obvious interest in / aptitude for sport.

• Panel interview.

•B e playing sports to a high level. Preference will be given to those involved in one or more of the School’s representative sports.

Sixth Form

•A spire to study GCSE PE in Years 10, 11 and BTEC in Sixth Form.

In addition to the above, sit a written paper on the broader aspects of Physical Education. * Candidates are asked to bring appropriate clothing and equipment for the activities listed above. Scholars benefit from one free 1:1 strength and conditioning session per week.

Technology Scholarship: 13+ and 16+ The Malvern St James Food and Nutrition, Technology Scholar: •A ppreciates the impact of food in the diet and society, and how it is grown, reared or caught. • T alks about food and demonstrates a passion for cooking both in and outside of the classroom. • E xplores their understanding of food and cooking and supports this by helping with clubs.

The Malvern St James Product Design, Technology Scholar: •D emonstrates curiosity as they move through the iterative design process and proves resilience and determination when developing high quality products. • E njoys the subject out of the classroom through hobbies, craft activities and extracurricular opportunities. • F urthers their understanding of product design and supports this by helping with clubs.

Applicants should: • As a Food and Nutrition, Technology Scholar have an awareness, understanding and a keen interest in the food around us. Depending on your age it would be expected that you would want to continue your study of food through the GCSE Food and Nutrition course (13+) and/or the Diploma in Food Science and Nutrition (16+). • As a Product Design, Technology Scholar have a clear passion for an area of the subject; designing, manufacturing, innovation or material development. Depending on your age it would be expected that you would want to continue your study of Product Design through the GCSE course (13+) and/or the A Level (16+).

Flexi-Boarding Scholarship: 13+ The Scholarship is open to internal and external Day Girls in Years 9 and 10. It is a one-year award for Year 9 and a two year award for Year 10. Year 9 girls may reapply for the two-year award the following year.

The Malvern St James Flexi Boarding Scholar: • Is fully integrated into the Boarding House. • Takes part in a wide range of extracurricular activities. • Is entitled to one or two flexi boarding nights per week.

Applicant should: • Be a positive role model. •H ave demonstrated they can be a committed member of a team or group.

Flexi Boarding Scholarship Assessment •A pplicants should submit an application letter explaining what they hope to gain from the Flexi Boarding experience and what they can offer the Boarding community. • A personal CV of current activities in School. • Panel interview.

The Founders’ Awards: 16+ The Founders’ Awards are Sixth Form Awards with meanstested bursary assistance. The awards seek to enable outstanding all-round students to access the excellent educational opportunities offered at MSJ. Applicants for the Founders' Awards are expected to be academically strong in addition to strengths in other areas such as Expressive Arts or Sports and who also make or are willing to make a significant contribution to School life. The awards are named in honour of our founding schools and the pioneering women who established all-girls’ education in Malvern. The Founders’ Awards will increase accessibility to the school and build upon an already deep-rooted tradition of Bursary and Scholarship provision. The number of Awards given, and the value of each, will be kept deliberately flexible so that we are able to reach the most deserving girls and address their individual circumstances. In this way we create something which is bespoke and represents a meaningful contribution to the recipient.

Applicant criteria Founders’ Award recipients should show a pursuit of excellence. They will be mentors, role models, and outstanding ambassadors who will enjoy being part of our community and play a leading role within it. Applications are welcomed from Year 11 girls already at MSJ as well as those currently at school elsewhere who, in their pursuit of excellence, will make an exceptional contribution to the academic and enrichment life of MSJ.

How to apply In the first instance parents should complete a Confidential Statement of Financial Circumstances Form which is available on the Founders’ Awards page of the website. Please email the completed financial form to Mrs Jo French finance@malvernstjames.co.uk or alternatively post to Mrs Jo French, Malvern St James, 15 Avenue Road, Malvern, Worcestershire, WR14 3BA. The details supplied on this form are confidential to the Director of Finance and the Finance Manager who will assess each application on an individual basis. Candidates who are eligible will then be invited to: • Complete a Founders’ Award application form rovide a Personal Statement of no more than one •P side of A4 • Submit a three minute video presentation • Provide an academic reference and predicted grades • Sit a CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test) test if not already taken • Panel interview

Publicity and fundraising The Awards are funded purely from fundraising and charitable donations. Recipients of awards will be expected to take part in fundraising activity for the scheme by featuring in communications materials and this can be through still images, quotes, text and video, using first names only.

Fee Remissions and Bursaries Fee Remission Senior School Scholarships carry a fee remission of up to 10% for Scholarships and 5% for Exhibitions. The final award will be considered alongside any other bursaries and remissions, the combined total of which will not exceed 40% of fees. Sixth Form Scholarships and Awards may carry a fee remission subject to means testing. All Scholarships are awarded for as long as the student remains at the School, provided that the Scholar’s progress and conduct are excellent. We also expect Scholars to actively contribute to their Scholarship specialism.

Bursaries Our bursary programme is generous and designed to allow as many girls as possible who meet Malvern St James entry criteria to take up a place here. Alongside sibling, Forces and Old Girls’ Association discounts, means-tested bursaries are worth up to a maximum of 40% discount from the fees. All Bursaries are granted on the recommendation of the Director of Finance, at the discretion of the Headmistress. All Bursaries are reassessed annually.
