Remote Learning at Malvern St James Girls’ School

Although these are extraordinary times we are all living in, our commitment at Malvern St James Girls’ School to providing an excellent education for girls at all levels remains strong. We are so impressed with the resilience that the girls are showing and have been delighted with the way that they have continued to engage so well in our remote learning programme. Thank you for your continued support as we know that the success of our remote learning offer is due to us all working together for the benefit of all the girls at MSJ.

We are here for you We recognise that now more than ever School is about more than just lessons and the importance of a shared community. Our online provision mirrors our normal School Day with tutorials, assemblies and activities so that Tutors can check in with their tutees and girls can have that all important social interaction with peers. We are also constantly looking at new ways to keep the buzz of our School community thriving. We are here to support you, so if you need help with or have concerns about your daughter’s learning please contact us.

How remote learning works Registration is at 08:20 on Microsoft Teams each day and compulsory for all pupils. Any pupils in a different time zone must arrange timings with their form tutor. Girls in Reception to Year 6 wear their School Uniform when attending lessons and their P.E Kit (or suitable clothing for sports activities) when attending P.E lessons. Girls in Year 7 to Sixth Form do not need to wear their uniform but should be appropriatey dressed. Girls follow their existing timetable which guides them to which subjects they should be studying each day. Each teacher sets work or teaches their lessons using Microsoft Teams in line with the existing timetables. Lessons start at the usual time and lessons are 45 minutes in length rather than the full hour, to allow for breaks away from the screen. Whilst at home, we aim to still reflect a typical school day, although we do not intend or expect girls to be working for very long periods on a digital device each day. Learning support lessons, EAL and other 1:1 paid lessons will continue to run for the usual allotted time. Form Tutors will mention in their overview for the week the opportunities when girls can get time away from the screen. Homework is not set for Reception to Year 9 during remote learning as our experience has shown this has not been helpful. It is very important that pupils return and upload any work for their subject teachers, in the way requested by their teachers so that they can receive meaningful feedback in a friendly manner.

Microsoft Teams Microsoft Teams is our platform for online learning, it is used in a variety of ways, including:

Daily Form Time and registration

Morning assemblies and tutor meetings

Delivering on-line lessons or to set and explain the tasks at the end of the lesson to help girls with any issues or answer questions they may have

Pre-recording and posting video lessons

Setting tasks/prep

Adding lessons and for support and independent learning

Uploading classwork and prep to teachers for marking

Providing feedback and marks to pupils

Groups on Microsoft Teams are called Teams and girls have access to many different Teams. Working in their class and form Teams, Girls can access Posts, Files, Class Notebook, Assignments and Grades for lessons and registration. For some of the wider School activities, they also have access to several other Teams including Chaplaincy, Boarding House, Scholars, PE and their Ships Team. Our Shared Pupil Resources Team is the place for Assemblies, Activities and Clubs, Competitions, the Weekly Pupil bulletin and a file section which includes useful resources and links to lots of great free activities such as National Theatre streaming, David Walliams audio stories and free courses.

Useful tips for online learning Create a dedicated working space and stay organised Create a special place for your daughter to complete her school work, it’s a bonus if it can be separate from her bedroom. Be prompt for online lessons and ensue your daughter has access to a device which allows her to access Microsoft Teams and all the work she is set. Being organised can help girls feel in control, whether that’s having individual piles of work for each day; separate notebooks for different subjects; or using a specific, coloured pen for each topic.

Establish a routine As the Coronavirus pandemic continues, so many things are out of our control. However, home routines can provide an allimportant structure, sense of predictability and normality. While it’s easy for boundaries to merge when working, learning and living at home, maintaining a clear separation between work and home life is key. This can mean wrapping up at the same time every day; sitting down together for family mealtimes; and keeping the structure of schooldays different from weekends.

Take regular breaks Take advantage of free time and step away from the screen. Encourage your daughter to step outside for a breath of fresh air or if the weather is looking bleak, some enthusiastic star jumps, loud singing to a favourite song, or bonding time with a pet are fantastic ways to reenergise those weary brains.

Seek support Remote learning can be difficult for everyone, so keep in touch with teachers and staff. Whether you have worries about workload or wellbeing, or simply want to chat about how things are going, we are here to provide academic and pastoral support.
