EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW With Olga Vinogradova
What is the secret for an image to become unforgettable?
pay maximum
attention to it Olga
For me, it's always trying to create and bring something of my own. Of course, you need to learn from the work of masters, be inspired by them, try to repeat some techniques - but do not duplicate them, always approach each work with imagination. And of course, putting your heart into - it is always obvious in the work, even if it was made by a novice photographer.
How hard has it been to establish yourself in the industry and what are some of the largest things you've faced? When I started working, it was still a very undeveloped industry in our country - there were almost no photo studios, photo schools, masters from whom I could study new technics ...Over time, everything developed - and it became easier to "be a photographer"
What do you think the biggest misconception about you is? Please briefly tell us about your background. Who is Olga Vinogradova? Hello! My name is Olga, I'm a photographer from Russia. Now I mainly work in the fine art direction, and sometimes I work on the sets of films, TV series, and music videos. I have been working as a photographer for more than 10 years...
As the expert you are, what are the unique features of this kind of photography and the keys to master it? As I wrote above, I prefer the fine art genre in my works. This series can also be attributed to it. The peculiarity of this genre is that you can create, make unique images, combine incongruous - there are no limits for your fantasy!
78
I can say for sure - not only about myself, but also about photographers in general, and other freelancers. The biggest misconception is that working in this sphere is easy. No, that's not true at all. This area requires a lot of self-organization and a lot of work!
What is the best piece of advice you've ever gotten and do you follow it? A colleague once told me that the narrower your field is and the more expert you are in it, the more demand there will be for you. Recently I myself came closer to this idea and conclusion - that everyone should do their own thing, pay maximum attention to it... That's why I've been trying to delegate some household tasks to other specialists - for instance, I take taxi, use delivery service, cleaning, in order to be able to devote my time to my profession and development in it
Fashion & Beauty | December 2020
If you could say one thing to someone younger who looks up to you, what would you say? "You can do everything!" It's true. Now is the time of maximum opportunities! If you try hard, and not be afraid to do and make enough effort - everyone can do anything now!
What are your goals for the near future and do you have any exciting projects you want to share with us? Yes, now we are working on two very interesting projects at once - with complex makeup, one with water, and the other - even underwater!

This editorial was shot in one of the largest laser tag arenas in the world -- the 1200 sq/m Laserzone in Houston, Texas. The deep shadows and dramatically shifting lights provided an ominous, futuristic backdrop for the contemporary collection we featured. It also created dramatic color changes in the wardrobe. Because the time in which we shot this editorial was one of world crisis and much social unrest in the U.S., the venue seemed a metaphor for an uncertain future. The bright colors and bold creations of these 6 EMERGING DESIGNERS from Texas, New York, and California represent artistic optimism in defiance of the growing malaise.

The S Please briefly tell us about your background. Who is Gerard Harrison?
I’m a fashion photographer from Houston, Texas. I was a lawyer for 25 years. When I got tired of it, I picked up my camera seriously, opened a studio, and started learning to shoot fashion. That was 4 years ago. With each shoot, I have tried to do something I’ve never attempted before. This editorial is the latest example. We assembled 6 highly creative emerging designers from across the U.S., shot in the near darkness of a laser tag arena with constantly changing ambient color and in space that limited us to a single, bare light. The result is a reminder that creative thought and boldness are what ultimately enable us to emerge from darkness. Fear, submission, and timidity will only keep us there.
What's been the biggest highlight in your career so far? That’s hard to say. I try something new with each project, so each successful shoot provides a highlight. However, my biggest honor was having a work “Commended” in the Siena Creative Photo Awards. That photo was also published in Forbes digital edition as part of their coverage of the Siena Awards.
What's the most important thing you want your potential clients to know about you? You are likely to be surprised by what I produce. Because I am not interested in duplicating one shoot after another, I will be looking for some way to make your final product both distinctive and better than either of us anticipated. And the result is nearly always a surprise in some respect.
If you could change anything about the fashion industry, what would it be? I would end the practice of modeling agencies’ signing models and then requiring them to pay for expensive training with no guarantee they will ever
recover their investment. Agencies should advance the cost of training, if needed, and only recover it from commissions on bookings for the model. That would create an incentive not to sign marginal models and to work for the ones they do sign. This change might also increase the career life of models and reduce the huge number of very young models in the industry.
Who is the person that inspires you the most and why? What suggestions do you have for new photographers? In photography, I took the most inspiration from Ansel Adams. His black and white landscapes are still the standard, even after nearly a century. My limited advice to new photographers is to seek out the work of the very best photographers of the last 100 years. Note that very few of them, if any, post regularly on Instagram! Find the ones that make you feel something, then figure out how they did it. Study the book “Light, Science, and Magic”to learn the basic tools of the craft. Work on photography every day.
You are a creative mind with an exceptional eye for detail. Are you able to talk us through your process when creating your art?
The process always starts with a notion of what I want to produce. Then, after the images are captured in camera, the real creative work begins. Ansel Adams compared the negative to a musical composer’s score. It has no life until it is interpreted and performed. It’s during creative editing that I try to give voice to what is in the “negative.” And many times, what the negative offers is very different from what I originally imagined.

of Gerard Harrison
What should we expect from Gerard Harrison in the near future? I hope to continue shooting fashion and pushing my work in the direction of fine art. In that regard, the fashion work of Annie Leibovitz, Solve Sundsbo, and Nick Knight are inspirational.
Artistic images, by nature, are ambiguous because our first response to them is emotional, not intellectual. When we try to constrain art to a single interpretation, we diminish its power. So, I would say that my process is mainly trying to stay attentive to the ambiguities inherent in the images and to give those ambiguities voice.

making a choice is always the best choice EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW With Raffaello Robbiani
Can you give us a bit of background on how your career evolved? As it happens for many, my first acquaintance with photography came almost by chance. Being a passionate traveler I started to realize how photography was becoming my favorite way to assimilate and preserve journeys' experiences. Along the way, one passion grew with the other, and it didn't take long before I started to explore other types of photography. It was not long ago when, very naturally, I discovered that photographing people was probably more intriguing and I felt inclined to it. Since then I started to practice portraits, which is still one of my favorite expressions along with fashion and beauty. Today I've almost completed my studies at the international photography school "Espai d'Art" in Valencia (Spain) and I've had my first editorials published in some magazines.
How did you discover MALVIE? I had this school assignment work done in collaboration with a makeup artist. The work focused on avant garde makeup and I had a very short time to set it up, but when we looked at the results with the team,we were so happy that somebody joked about proposing it to a magazine. I took the challenge for real and started to look for magazines that could be interested in the topic. MALVIE came straight out from my online research. I found the standard was very high. I was browsing through the recent front covers and I felt almost intimidated for it was one of my first experiences in the world of beauty. But still I decided to give it a try. It didn't go that bad.
If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before beginning your career what would it be?
I started my career as a self-taught photographer but it's only when I decided to go through a formal education that I started to see things clearly. I realized how the technical aspect, which, up to a certain extent, I mastered already, was only one of the many fundamentals of photography. The school offered to me all the others with a more holistic and artistic approach. Therefore, if I had to give a tip to the young me, it would be to start getting a formal education on photography from the beginning.
What do you think is the hardest thing in your life you've ever had to overcome? I can think of one that used to be a psychological barrier for me: Shyness. For as long as I can remember I have always been shy. Extremely sometimes. Now, with a bit of age, I became acquainted with it and at times I can also manage to overcome this obstacle. Today I see it more as a personal feature rather than something to overcome.
What's been the biggest highlight in your career so far?
Being published on MALVIE risks to be in the top three actually.
What is the best advice you’ve been given? It is that making a choice is always the best choice. Many of us struggle in front of a dilemma and in some cases are so scared of the possible consequences that just can't make a choice. The result is that we let circumstances choose for us. We must convince ourselves that the feeling of being the one who decides our pattern is stronger than the consequences (extreme scenarios excluded). It is true that some of our choices end up with failure or with pain but getting there with the confidence that we did our best will help to stay focused on doing better or differently next time rather than feel like a victim.
What is the most important thing for creating new amazing work? I'm not sure there is the one thing. I believe more in a good balance of different ingredients: seek inspiration constantly, be genuine and do not pretend, analyze your mistakes to learn a lesson, try to have a positive attitude with your team members or collaborators. Sometimes push yourself to exit your comfort zone and explore areas out of your radar.
Are there any current projects you’re working on that you can tell us about? There is a project I can definitely say I am thrilled about. I can't and don't want to anticipate too much for it is still in its embryonic stage but I'm working on a music video clip. I'm studying cinema at school and I will present this work as the final project. I've always been inspired by music and the idea of merging my work with those of a singer and a musician feels so exciting. I'm not sure about what the result will be but I can say the enthusiasm of the team is sky-high.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW With Nikolay Yakovlev Tell us about the development process that culminated in the artist you are today. My life has developed in such a way that by the age of 25 I didn't quite understand who I wanted to be. I was constantly trying to find some new opportunities, new solutions. Through introspection, I discovered a rather large background in myself: my technical skills, the way I analyze color, light. This gave me an idea to study retouching. Faced with retouching, I realized that the images offered by customers did not fit my ideals. I thought about the need to create something by myself. Who I am now is my experience in the activity of a photo retoucher, my technical background and knowledge of photography, the operation of the camera, sensors, processors. I am a photographer thanks to this knowledge. I grew out of being a retoucher because I didn't like what I was given to process and I wanted to do my own art.
What's been the biggest highlight in your career so far?
In fact, at this particular period it is a very difficult question for me, because it seems to me that bright moments ... are yet to happen. Now the most important thing is work that goes on every day: on my projects, on improving myself as a photographer, as a retoucher, as a person who wants to achieve great heights. An important and, one might say, defining, for me was a master class from a pretty good Russian photographer. From this course I got great and important acquaintances, including with the photographer who led it. We began to communicate well, he helped me a lot in many of my projects. And the models that I managed to work with there later helped with the development of my creative skill. I made my project with one of those models, which allowed us to create a team. Now this team has a photographer, that is me, the creative director, stylist, make-up artist. All the connections that we have, we use in creating a client base, in shootings, in working with brands.
Who were your biggest influences?
As a child, I lived in a place in Russia that was the most difficult to access in winter. I lived on a small island in the Karelia Republic, where communication with the mainland was carried out with the help of ships, and in winter - with the help of a helicopter, although quite rarely.
One cold February evening, my father brought me a camera. It was a small digital camera. I don't remember the model now, but I can say that I spent the next 7 years with this camera. I did not let go of it. I photographed every sunset, every person I met, kittens, architecture and so on. That is, literally everything that I could capture on this small island shrouded in ice. Therefore, I am sure that my father had the greatest influence on me.
What do you think is the hardest thing in your life you've ever had to overcome? If you take only the photography side, then the most difficult periods for me are failures in creativity. This is not what is called a creative crisis. Because if you constantly do something, it will never happen to you. Rather, it is a serious discrepancy between shooting expectations and reality. The most difficult period for me was quite recently, when our whole team was preparing to shoot in New Year's style. I didn't fully understand what we wanted to get. At the time of the shooting, the makeup artists, stylists, and models constantly tried to push their ideas and there was no understanding between them. I couldn’t put it all together correctly, and as a result, the photos came out very bad. It was a painful moment for me. I was sure that with my skill level it was unforgivable for me to shoot so badly, I could not let it happen. And in terms of creativity, it really touched me. Well, in life, the most difficult moment was when my father became seriously ill and at the age of 14 I was practically left without parents. I was left alone and my goal was to try to survive and become a good person, a good photographer. Unfortunately, as a result of this, for a long time I had to do not my favorite thing, I had to earn money in ways that are quite far from photography. To start all over again, oddly enough, my childhood helped me again. When I moved to the city and was able to improve my life, a person who knew me from a very young age helped me to get back on my path and shared my love for photography. This person reminded me of my goal and supported me in every way so that I would not give up and change my life for the better. And I am very glad that now I was able to return and I have at least this - something small, but what I like.
If you could say one thing to someone younger who looks up to you, what would you say? I would advise him never to be afraid of failure. Constantly try to create something new and always learn. Analyze your mistakes. They will always happen. If a mistake lakes over you, then you will not become the professional you want. One advice here - learn from your mistakes.
What are the biggest challenges of working during this pandemic? As I mentioned, I live in Russia. For us, the word pandemic has a slightly different meaning than in Europe or North America. There were great difficulties at the very beginning - not to leave the house, a complete lack of orders and the opportunity to work. Therefore, the question of finance came to the fore - it was impossible to receive a single paid order at first. There was nowhere to wait for financial help. However, this was a big benefit. I was able to learn a lot - I studied the techniques of light, deepened my knowledge in photography and image processing. I was also able to meet photographers from all over the world.online of course. The most pleasant thing was to feel the support of the photographic community, it would seem, from completely unfamiliar people. This situation made it possible to establish such contacts that, perhaps, I would have received only after 10 years of hard work.
How did you discover MALVIE and what do you like about the magazine? I noticed this magazine on the Kavyar website. What I like about your magazine is that you allow young photographers to realize themselves. Through your publications, young photographers are encouraged to develop, move forward and do better. I think this is fundamentally important and immensely grateful for your support. I believe that professionals in our field notice the promising works in this magazine, which gives the potential opportunity for photographers to take part in major projects and take their creativity to the next level.
What is next for Nikolay Yakovlev?
I’ll be brief here. The most important thing I dream of is that I would value my work and appreciate my efforts.
