What is Fashion? Is it just about making clothes and putting on beautifuldesigns? Or can it be something more, something bigger? Can it bepolitical? Yes, it can. Actually, it already is. To choose what to wear is a political act by itself. Every time we makethat choice, we are saying something about ourselves, about what we wantto communicate and how we want to communicate it, because it shows ourpersonal preferences and makes references about our lifestyle. Also, morethan that: when we look at it from a group perspective, it shows what we, asa society, are going through: fashion changed after wars, it was influencedby every artistic movement and keeps on making statements about literalpolitical subjects, like feminism and racial equality. We are even living oneof these big changes right now with the back-to-normal feeling we’reexperiencing with the pandemic coming to an end in so many places. Fashion sure is glamorous and beautiful as we see on social media andin Fashion Shows, but it is way more than that. Fashion is not just abouttrends or pretty clothes; it shows the behavior of people in every specificmoment of history. Fashion helps us understand culture, economics andpolitics. That’s why Fashion is so important, it
Fashion: a political act
is the future, the present andthe past. To understand a little more about the political aspects of fashion, let’stake a look into history, specifically the 16th to 18th century, when theconcept of Fashion as we know today became part of the society. Back inthe days, the royalty wanted to stand out with luxury accessories, voluminous clothes and different colors; and the emergent bourgeoisie, toshow their growing power, started to copy the royal style. So, starting withthe old monarchy, especially queens like Marie Antoniette, the last queen ofFrance before the French Revolution, who used fashion as a big powerstatement with her extravagant dresses and tower-looking hair styles –somuch that she’s still known as fashion revolutionary to this day – we can see how the clothes are used to create the feeling of belonging to a specificgroup, which still happens today. Coming a little closer to our reality, we come across Populism on the 19thcentury, a movement that refers to a range of political stances thatemphasizes "the people" and juxtapose this group against what was called"the elite". And of course fashion is not untouched by the ravages of it, sothis time what happens is a popular approach, with a fashion industry thatshows less luxury and more identification, with simpler and more practicalclothes. Also, it is still causing changes: since many political causes startedto be talked about when Populism took place, important fights likerepresentation and gender and racial equality are now

As a real sign of the times, fashion has always been one of the first things to reflect what’s happening in society.

discussed and heardin the world media and in the Fashion industry due to the people whostarted the discussion and fought a really hard fight back then. It brought awhole new perspective to the whole media and to Fashion, because itbecame something so important that people wouldn’t buy something from abrand they didn’t see themselves in. That’s a perfect example of howpolitical progress can make a change in Fashion, and how Fashion can beused to make progress.
That was even times when Fashion was used as a literal stage to apolitical aspect, like in 2013, when the Metropolitan Museum of Arts, in NewYork, debuted its Costume Institute exhibition, named “Punk: Chaos toCulture”, dedicated to examine the influence of the punk movement in high-fashion.
The exhibition not only had antiestablishment views and individualfreedoms as its principal themes, it was also about pressing social issues, such as climate change, by displaying fashion items that had protestpurposes.
The punk subculture movement was another example of fashionas a statement: to show their insatisfaction and need

for autonomy, thepunks wore aggressive clothes, like leather, and heavy makeup – thefamous designer Vivienne Westwood was a big name of the movement inthe United Kingdom in the 70’s when it started, and still is. The exhibitionused clothes and accessories to show the political aspect of the movement, proving, one more time, that fashion is an important part of history.
Actually, fashion is more than part of history. It is history itself.Feminism history, for example, can be told almost entirely by clothes, fromthe multi-layers dresses to the suffragists, who wore famous by their black jackets and started the feminist movement, and to the first suit designed forwomen by Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel in 1914. The way women dressed wasalways important in society, first it was supposed to show submission anddependency, now, it is a way to show empowerment and to empowerothers.
We all saw when Kamala Harris stepped ontothe stage and intohistory at the Chase Center in Wilmington, as Vice President of the UnitedStates wearing a white pantsuit and it was so much more than just a greatoutfit, it was a powerful statement about politics. When she showed upthere, she did it in full recognition of the weight of the moment, and in fullacknowledgment of all the women who came before her.
She broke thefinal glass ceiling, stretching the conversation all the way from thesuffragists through Geraldine Ferraro, Hillary Clinton and the women ofCongress. The white color meant “the quality of our purpose” for theCongressional Union for Woman Suffrage published in 1913. At the time, itwas filled with frustration; and now, as Kamala Harris showed, it’s finallytransformed into achievement and progress.
Fashion as individual expression, as the final layer of our body and thefirst of our personality, is what causes a first impression in everyone wemeet, and it is how we first show in which group we belong. Even if we don’tmean to, what we choose to dress sends a message, and this message canbe read in different ways by people, accordingly to their own beliefs andreferences – and what is more political than that? When the questions are made: “can Fashion be more than clothes?”“Can it make active changes in a society and, maybe, in the world?” “CanFashion really be political?” The answer is always the same: it always was.

Since I was little, I always knew what I was meant to do in this world. And it was writing. I could only express myself through words, and they always came to me in the most natural way. A few years later, I discovered fashion and became obsessed.
It was my way out of the chaos of the world. So when it came to choose what I wanted to do for a living, I didn’t even have to think about it: I had to be a fashion journalist. My heart made the choice for me a long time ago, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

Racism goes against everything we believe here in MALVIE
Whether it comes in big gestures, like bullying and name-calling, or disguised as “jokes”, racism is violent. It is always aggressive and has the only purpose to oppress people. And that is something we can no longer tolerate. As we live in a world where people are being discriminated and even murdered for their skin color and genetic features, it is our mission to try to make life a little less scary.
You are not alone!
You deserve to be respected and appreciated for who you are, and nobody has the right or the power to say otherwise.
We know we cannot change everything on our own, but we are doing our best to help in any way possible and to show our support in the making of a society in which everyone is safe, respected and gets every opportunity they deserve.
We know it will take time for us to make big changes with worldwide impacts, but we can try and star t somewhere. That’s why we created MALVIE Noir, a special edition destined to empower people of c olor and make their voices heard through the art. Also, in the immediate term, we are donating proceeds to a black led organizations that fights racial injustice.

The recent dramatic changes in the world made our aesthetic outlook, our life philosophy to shift towards a slower pace, embracing the powerful and fragile beauty of nature. We find enjoyment in light, airy spaces. We value comfortable, minimalistic style and earthy colours. We appreciate everything that gives us contentment, peace of mind and freedom.

Finding out your ideal routine is the key. Some habits like self- love and gratitude have to be a part of our daily life. Also there is famous formula of 8.8.8 which sums up to 24 h of a day: 8 h for sleeping, 8 h for working, 8 h for yourself. Even if you won’t resolve all the problems with this scheme, the results would be positive.
