EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW With
get it in camera cina
When did your passion for photography start and what were the main milestones that turned you into the artist you currently are?
Well, coming from a family with strong artistic roots I think I got rather forced to photography. My Dad was quite a known photographer in landscape and architecture. My childhood consisted basically of dragging equipment and going to places. Waiting for the perfect lighting at the Brooklyn Bridge. Shooting the Eiffel Tower in freezing early spring. I cannot say it sparked the passion for it, but it surely embedded a deep understanding of analog photography and technical knowledge. My summer vacations were either spent like this or in our darkroom, developing film and playing with chemicals and the effect of it on paper. In hindsight, I am very happy about these
Cina Uicker
experiences. But it took me a good couple of years to go back to photography. For the milestones: I think it was these times that crafted the character of the photographer I am today. Milestones also happen basically every single time I fight myself back to the surface from a creative down. I bet a lot artist will confirm you this.
We admire the exquisite level of detail in all your works. Does your creative process start from a certain image in your mind, or do you seek inspiration as you progress?
First of all: thank you for the kindness. I'd say that most of my work springs from an emotion and a feeling I want to convey. Like this feeling, you have when you watch a really really good movie that took you on an emotional journey, and then the protagonist finally has his glorious moment. This very feeling I'd like to communicate with my pictures. Like the audition in Flashdance. Like the feeling when you´re watching a Baz Luhrmann movie. I'd like my pictures and videos to be lush and full of music and color and feelings. This is the place I go to seeking inspiration. Also: 80´s and 50`s commercials. hahaha.
What would you say is your style of photography?
My style of photography is neo vintage photography meets 80s music and has a love child with feminism. It's girly, but determined. I want my models to be superior, in power, eager.
What are the technical challenges of this kind of photography and how did you overcome them?
Coming from analog photography I decided early to stick to available light. I love the challenge
of working with natural circumstances. I feel like it gives you realness to be dependent of circumstances you cannot influence. It keeps you on your toes. Light changes constantly, so you have to adjust constantly. If you do it long enough you develop an instinct for your settings. It s not something anymore you have to think about. I love the level of understanding I have with my camera now. The infamous 10 000 hours of practice have been long overstepped, luckily.
As the expert you are, what are the unique features of this kind of photography and the keys to master it?
Working with actors and dancers involve good communication skills. The key is to direct them to the exact emotion you want to capture. Building trust in the shortest amount of time is off the essence. You want them to open up, show emotions, create forms with their bodies. Being able to gently guide the model there where you want him/her to be is super important. You want a certain vision to come true, you have to navigate everybody involved towards that goal. The make up artist, the stylist, the set builder, the model. They do not see your envisioned idea. You have to direct them.
Has Covid-19 impacted your art and business this and last year? How do you feel about the current situation?
Being located in a one of a kind city like Berlin has helped me a lot. My target audience are actors, singer, influencers, stage folks in general. And entertainment is now more important then ever. Fortunately, everybody needs headshots now and I am providing a rather glamorous way of portraying actors. I think I got the sweet spot of delivering something that is very much wanted and needed at the moment combined with a unique twist. This gets me safely through this pandemic new world order atm, we aware that I am blessed
and not many colleagues were as lucky as I am right now. I try to give back by supporting young and upcoming artists with pro bono headshots and workshops for free for underage photographer kids. We have to nurture arts now more then ever.
What is the best piece of advice you've ever gotten and do you follow it?
Get it in camera. And yes, I follow this. If the shot needs to be fixed with Lightroom, it's not a good shot.
If you could say one thing to someone younger who looks up to you, what would you say?
There are no shortcuts. Take your time. Do not get inspired by social media and do not follow mainstream trends.
What has been the highlight of your career so far and what are your hopes/ dreams for the future?
My highlights were shooting ballet dancers from la Scala in Milan and Paris. I am addiced to shooting professional dancers in vibrating cities. Every single outdoor shooting with professionals is a highlight. And I do have the strong feeling that the best is yet to come. I am positiv for the future, it is a fact that the best art got created in difficult times. You can never cancel art. We just keep on dreaming, creating and producing.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH KATERINA MEDVEDEVA
Can you give us a bit of background on how your career evolved?
I worked in the office sector for many years, and after finishing a successful administrative career, I decided to try myself as a producer of commercial photo shoots. This area attracted me with its freedom of creativity. I have been approached by various photographers for help in creating beautiful photo projects.
And then I thought, why not start taking pictures myself. I enjoyed it. Then I did a lot of practice and self-education I'm still constantly experimenting with shooting styles.
What's been the biggest highlight in your career so far?
The most important event in my career was the purchase of my first professional camera.
What do you think is the hardest thing in your life you've ever had to overcome?
The most difficult thing is your own fear that suddenly something may not work out. I am a great perfectionist, and it is important for me that all the details of the shooting are thought out.
If you could say one thing to someone younger who looks up to you, what would you say?
My clients appreciate me for my individual approach to each new shoot. Before each shoot, I carefully think through and discuss with the client all the details - images, locations, makeup and styling. For me, it is very important that a person who trusts my taste-gets great pleasure from the shooting process and the final photos.
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
I would make more international digital Internet platforms for photographers, where they could exhibit their work and evaluate the work of their colleagues in different areas and styles of photography from different countries.
How did you discover MALVIE and what do you like about MALVIE Magazine?
I found out about MALVIE journal through the KAVYAR platform when they offered to send them my work for publication in one of the site's journals. There I saw the page of the magazine MALVIE and could not resist sending some of my work there. Because the works that this magazine publishes are very close to my taste and style. It was a great honor for me when one of my works appeared on the cover of one of the issues.
How long does it take to create one of these wonderful works?
Each shoot is a whole project that my team is working on. Sometimes we create costumes and props specifically for some projects. It can take from several weeks to a month to prepare a single shooting. But it's worth it.
What should we expect from Katerina Medvedeva in the near future?
My team and I are currently working on several wedding fashion projects. They will be implemented very soon.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THOMAS CAPASSO
When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career as a photographer?
I was born into photography and with photography in my blood, a photographer father, a photographer grandfather, it is impossible not to follow these footsteps.
How long does it take to create one of these wonderful works?
Time is truly relative, there are times that in a very short time you can organize everything, others that it takes weeks, months before being able to put together the right idea.
Has your vision and style evolved or changed over time?
Constantly changing, even after years, the continuous search for new techniques, the continuous experimentation behind my photography leads me to change continuously.
If we could ask the model, what would she say about you and your work?
Wait ... we ask you directly ... Ilaria writes: “A true professional and perfectionist, attentive to details, very stimulating and capable of taking me beyond the limits every time.”
What are the biggest challenges of working during this pandemic?
Being able to reinvent yourself, and survive. The continuous change of the national rules for the covid, the regional colors that condition both the transfers and the openings and closings greatly affect the possibility of working with an audience.
What do you like about MALVIE Magazine?
The quality that can be touched by hand, from the layout to the choice of articles, a dynamic magazine that can be appreciated on every occasion.
Describe your perfect day off when you are not shooting?
When I'm not shooting, I'm postproducing or creating something new. Basically I am always immersed in
photography every moment of my life. and when I really want to switch off, TV, a cinema, or friends are my outlet.
How has the covid-19 pandemic affected your shootings and business this year?
As I told you before, covid has very profoundly changed the way you live your days, the very organization of your work, the way you communicate with others .. you feel fear in the air and you touch the economic crisis. . the lack of socialization now based almost exclusively on social media and the digital world, has led to transforming group courses into digital courses, group shooting into personal shooting with increased costs and temples, all this does not give a hand to photography. and not only that.
What are your goals for the near future and do you have any exciting projects you want to share with us?
Goals, ideas for the near future, there is an infinite list .... You will see some very interesting ones as soon as we manage to take a breath of fresh air from this covid. just to leave you a bit of curiosity…. We talk about external services… but I don't want to tell you more so as not to take away the surprise.

MODEST FASHION
to dress in a more discrete way than what’s considered “trendy” now in the regular runways and the media, with dresses and skirts that go all the way to their ankles or feet, clothes that don’t expose the cleavage or the arms and all kinds of pants – but specially the baggy ones.
As we talk about Modest Fashion and its grown in the society and in the fashion industry, it’s important to know that the idea of making modest clothes came from the visualization of a new market, inspired in the needs of religious women, as a way to bring fashion to them without disrespecting their faith, but it has become so famous that it’s not about religion anymore: anyone can wear it and look amazing. It is known to be the most inclusive fashion trend till this day, because every person that is interested and passionate about Fashion can be part of the tendency in their own personal way, without the need to settle for something they are not comfortable with, whether it is being active in the fashion world or just seeing it in stores and social media.
Fashion’s origin is more than the need to protect the body from the cold, it is in the human necessity of standing out socially, it was even used to measure ones prestige in the society, based in many standards – which we´re still trying to overcome. But today we don’t have to fit in anymore, because we’ve learned and accepted that Fashion is all about expression and communication going from the individual to the world, having an important role when it comes to someone´s personal identity. Our clothes are the first things we choose in the morning when we wake up, and even if you don’t think about it that much, you’re making a statement about yourself and your personality to everyone you meet that day – and that’s why they are so important. Based on their personalities or even on their feeling in that specific day, some people like to put on sparkly and revealing clothes, which is awesome if it makes them feel good about themselves, but other people just like to dress modestly, maybe because of their faith or religion, maybe for personal preference. Either way, modest fashion is a growing business and we already know for sure that it isn´t just a trend; it is here to stay. Often attributed with religious and cultural dress, Modest Fashion extends to all those who simply prefer
What started with the desire to sell clothes to a specific group of people became a lot bigger than anyone could think, so big that it has now its own fashion weeks, already happening in Miami, Indonesia, Dubai, London and other places around the world. They are extraordinary events about ethic, culture, innovation and education that have the purpose to bring integration between brands, designers and the audience in a place that shows diversity while presenting the latest news in Fashion – so much that Modest Fashion is seen by some as the next haute-couture. Along with that, so much attention has been brought to the subject in the last decade, that Modest Fashion gained a special digital platform in 2017, “The Modist”, specialized in luxury modest clothes, with clothes that were signed by some of the biggest high-fashion brands, like the italian maisons Valentino and Dolce & Gabbana – part of their collections was even destined specifically to The Modist, but the website went out of business in early 2020, when the pan-

Fashion: TAOHUA HAN
demic of the Corona virus made the young project so vulnerable it had no option but to close, leaving all its buyers devastated. Today, luxury modest fashion can be found in other platforms, like the Net-a-Porter. Also, while the regular fashion industry just started focusing on comfort now, during the quarantine and lockdown restrictions caused by the pandemic that made impossible (or at least a lot harder) for people to get out of the house, Modest Fashion has always been more about being comfortable than just glamorous, as it is easier to spend the whole day in a suit than in a tight dress, especially if you have to go to work or something like that –but of course, there’s no problem at all if you like doing it in a dress. Giving people – and specially women – the chance to wear clothes that are confortable and cozy without losing its sense of style and fashionable side of getting dressed is a big win, considering the fact that women clothes have been uncomfortable and almost trapping through the whole human history, like all the layers of fabric and pieces that were part of the antique dresses, for example.
We have to recognize that having the opportunity to choose how we, as women, want to dress and show ourselves to the world is something to celebrate, as it’s only possible because many women fought for this right – and we got to keep on fighting for them for us and for the next generations to come. But as the market kept on growing, the biggest goal of the modest fashion, which is to guarantee access to more clothing options to this specific market and make these people seen, started to lose itself when it became just a big ‘trend’. It does not take away the importance of Modest Fashion, but it is something to be aware of when talking about it,
and especially when buying and wearing it. Make sure to buy it from sustainable and ethic places and to make it more than just a picture in your instagram feed, wear it with confidence and conscience.
By the end of the day, the most important thing is to feel like the best version of yourself every time you get dressed, and that´s why the Modest Fashion movement is so important and empowering, because it gives everyone an option. It doesn’t matter if you feel better in a croptop or in a long closed-cleavage dress, you’re beautiful in your own way and the clothes you choose to wear should enhance that beauty and show it to the world.
Since I was little, I always knew what I was meant to do in this world. And it was writing. I could only express myself through words, and they always came to me in the most natural way. A few years later, I discovered fashion and became obsessed.
It was my way out of the chaos of the world. So when it came to choose what I wanted to do for a living, I didn’t even have to think about it: I had to be a fashion journalist. My heart made the choice for me a long time ago, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

Olga, can you please tell us a bit more about yourself and how did you discover a love for makeup?
I was born and raised in a small town in Siberia. I became interested in makeup and fashion when I was at school. I remember back in the 1990s I learned how to do makeup looing at Madonna and Sharon Stone in magazines, what eye shape makeup artists make and how they apply blush. Tried it on myself and girlfriends. After I moved to Moscow, the city of opportunities, I decided to become a makeup artist and do fashion and beauty.
You have an impressive portfolio. How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists?
Thank you for appreciating my work. I have so many works in so many different styles that it’s hard to determine the leading one. I would say art&fashion. I think that having a lot of works in Art style is what I can be distinguished for. Doing work in this style one can be an artist and can experiment with images and color.
Why is having an MUA essential to a photographer? What can you provide to help a photographer's images stand out?
A well-done makeup can help reduce photo retouching time and have more good photos from the set. My ideas and a photographer's vision can have a wholesome picture and bring it to life. It’s teamwork that is key to having a good result for everyone.
Why is shooting for camera and lights, different than everyday makeup?
The camera sees much more than a human eye. That's why it’s important to do really good makeup. To make smooth skin, soft shadows, and right accents. You need to know how the products work on camera and how the makeup would look like depending on the lights. The makeup might look good in real life but the camera will show all the defects if there are any
What kinds of looks do you prefer doing?
I do not have any preferences when it comes to looks. Every woman is beautiful, and I bring it out. It doesn’t matter blonde or brunette, 20 or 60. When you see the look in their eyes after the makeup is done, what can be better?
What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women?
Don’t forget about your own beauty at any age, take care of yourself, and love yourself.
In your opinion, what are common mistakes you see women make on their makeup?
In spite of the fact that natural makeup is trending, many makeup artists continue to do makeup that looks more like greasepaint. They forget that makeup should only enhance natural beauty and not cover it.
What do you think are some of the keys to being a successful makeup artist?
I think that one should analyze their work, look at it from a critic’s point of view. Has everything gone as it was meant to? What could have been done better? It helps makeup artists grow and become better in their job. Also, it’s important to look at trends in fashion.
What do you hope to explore as a makeup artist in the future? Someone you'd like to work with or something you would like to accomplish?
There are a lot of colleagues it would be interesting to learn from, everyone has their style and techniques, Learning from the others one can grow as a professional and be inspired, I’m also actively developing as a clothing stylist. I have a lot of plans for the future, time will tell which of them will come into life.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH HAIDAR SALMAN
briefly tell us about your background. Who is Haidar Salman?
Please
Haidar Salman is owner and Creative Director of Mr. H Studios. I started my photography journey in October 2015 and for the past 6 years, I have grown every single day in order to achieve my goals. It has not been an easy journey starting out as a hobbyist and now, I do this professionally as my main source of income. It took great courage transitioning from my regular day job working in a hotel and in my local convention center to being owner and operator of my own company. It turned out to be the best decision of my life and my career has only begun. I love Macro Arts and this translates into everything that I do – from photo to film. Recently, I have picked up teaching as I have had numerous requests from clients asking what the secret recipe for my success has been. When I’m not working, my other hobbies are reading and my endless love for watching soccer. Meditation and a constant gym routine are essential for my drive.
You have created a unique artistic style. Tell us about it and how you developed it. One thing I teach all my students is consistency. For the best part of the last 3 years, I have focused mainly on in-studio work and with that, I have used the same Profoto strobes, Profoto reflectors, Nikon D850 and my Nikon 105mm Macro. The first thing I focused on is working on compositions that separate my work from the competition and once I found that, I worked everyday on mastering my craft.
Repetitive practise has created for me a niche that clients love. Once I learned my go-to composition, I would practise this on any and everything. It can be a portrait, a cosmetic product, an animal or even food – my work is always the same. This was all very essential in helping me build the Mr. H Studios brand.
We admire the exquisite level of detail in all your works. Does your creative process start from a certain image in your mind, or do you seek inspiration as you progress?
My creative process, like my artistic style, is very
consistent. The moment I see a new face, I instantly know I want to work with them. I focus on the basics and build on this. In a Beauty Editorial, I start with working on a clean Beauty look and then I build an artistic creative. My cosmetic team is extremely important for this. They are some of the masterminds behind my greatest work. I communicate with my cosmetic as well as my production team what my vision is and it is their job to bring that to life. I have extremely high expectations for everyone that works with me and it is those high standards that have helped propel us to where we are.
What's the most important thing you want your potential clients to know about you?
The most important thing I want my potential clients to know is that no matter who you are, and no matter what your experience in the industry is – you will succeed in Mr. H Studios. I built my portfolio on clients who have never modelled before and it is my patience as well as my careful planning and training that have helped create beautiful pieces of Art that to this day, look fresh. When you are working with Mr. H Studios, know that you will receive attention to detail from my entire team and I and that your product will be one of a kind and that you will have the best in the industry working for you.
What's been the biggest highlight in your career so far?
I have an amazing team that understands my vision and is helping me achieve all my wildest dreams – that is my career highlight. They have taught me that it is much too early to be wearing a crown and I agree with this. Mr. H Studios has only begun and
we have a long way to go before we can discuss any career highlights.
As the expert you are, what are the unique features of this kind of photography and the keys to master it?
Editorial and Macro Beauty is definitely amongst the hardest forms of photography to master. Consistency is the only way to progress in this field and investment in the proper gear, as well investment in yourself and be sure you have a mentor to guide you through the early stages. Even in this current state of my career, I go to my mentors whenever I have questions or I am in need of inspiration. Understanding the industry - past and present - will guide your vision. Once you reach a particular understanding of this, you can break all the photography rules and do things your own way.
What do you like about MALVIE Magazine?
I love working with MALVIE Magazine as from the very beginning, I felt at home with this publication. My artistic style is in line with MALVIE. Marius Ciobanu has been very important for my growth over the past 9 months and open communication with him is very important for my growth.
What exciting new projects should we expect from you in the future?I Clean, bold and graphic is the trademark style at Mr. H Studios. Skin is In as well as Catchlights Galore - the signature of any campaign we embark on.
I’m committed to working closely with my clients to understand exactly what they’re looking for, then capturing the perfect moment with ease. I have every intention to continue working on beautiful editorials and recently I purchased a Gimbal in hope of conquering Film Production.
Racism goes against everything we believe here in MALVIE
Whether it comes in big gestures, like bullying and name-calling, or disguised as “jokes”, racism is violent. It is always aggressive and has the only purpose to oppress people. And that is something we can no longer tolerate. As we live in a world where people are being discriminated and even murdered for their skin color and genetic features, it is our mission to try to make life a little less scary.
You are not alone!
You deserve to be respected and appreciated for who you are, and nobody has the right or the power to say otherwise.
We know we cannot change everything on our own, but we are doing our best to help in any way possible and to show our support in the making of a society in which everyone is safe, respected and gets every opportunity they deserve.
We know it will take time for us to make big changes with worldwide impacts, but we can try and star t somewhere. That’s why we created MALVIE Noir, a special edition destined to empower people of c olor and make their voices heard through the art. Also, in the immediate term, we are donating proceeds to a black led organizations that fights racial injustice.

Aleksandr, can you please briefly introduce yourself. How your interest in photography has sparked?
Let me introduce myself is Aleksandr Sverdlov. I am from Saint Petersburg, Russia. I have been interested in Photography since my childhood, but, unfortunately, the full-time work took almost all my free time. I decided to change my life. I was able to do photography professionally, at the moment my experience is four years.
How would you describe your work to someone who has never seen it? Is there any message you would like your photos to convey?
I am fashion and beauty photographer. This is a way to convey to people the beauty of the world and the richness of emotions, as well as my feelings. I try to put something more into photography, I try to draw the attention to the details, to the beauty that is here and now, which is among us. I try not to divide commercial and creative photography.
How do you keep yourself productive and retain your creative edge?
First of all, I am inspired by people, their individuality. In addition, I am inspired by the World of Fashion, style and the new trends in High-Fashion.
Describe please a day at a shoot, what happens and what is the trick to capturing a great shot?
A great shot starts with an idea. Correctly selected image, correctly selected model and a team of makeup artists and stylists. It is imperative that everyone be interested in the process and in a great result.
What do you look for in a creative team? What key skills are you looking for to ensure you are picking the best artists to work with?
I am looking for creative and interesting people to join the team. Not always professionals, but people who are involved in the process, love their job and are interested in an excellent result. We are to be a real team, united by a common goal.
What would be some tips you would give to a beginning photographer?
If photography is a hobby and a person wants to become a professional, one is to decide what kind of on genre to chose and what special skills to practice. To do this, him/her needs to try different genres in order to choose a closer one for himself. A great desire, correct perception of critics and love for creativity are very important.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
I’ve always been inspired by individuality, profound artistic endeavors and a certain uniqueness. I tend to work with people that think extremely outside of the box in their creative paths. I’ve been in this industry for 15 years. I started with modeling, moved into fashion design then moved into fashion stylising, production and direction. I love wearing all the hats and having an all-star team with similar passions as mine!
Why did you choose to pursue a career as a creative director?
As I had previously stated, I love wearing all hats and creating content that allows my team and myself to expresses our creativity. Being a director is more than just holding the responsibility of ensuring a productive shoot, it gives access into creating a piece of art that tells a story. I love creating content that tells a powerful story to the public!
How would you describe yourself to people that don't know you?
Creative, outgoing, free spirit
How long does it take to create one of these wonderful works?
It’s circumstantial with every project! Some take one minute some can take up to a few years! I’ve had last minute shoots turn into an award winning shot and I’ve had 5 year concepts turn out the same.
What are the key ingredients for a striking image?
The S
Facial expressions and poses from the model, storyline, set/environment, perfection from all stylists (makeup, hair, wardrobe) lighting... there are so many key factors that have to be implemented! However, to create a STRIKING image (alongside these necessary basics,) it has to be something that has that WOW factor...the storyline, the clothing the makeup have to be different and make people's heads turn. I love creating strange and eye-catching content, I can't wait to get more into that realm and have many projects that are being facilitated with the extra wow factor!
Has your vision and style evolved or changed over time?
Yes it has! There are a few projects that I started ten years ago that has kept its core concept but has completely evolved over time. I started fashion design alongside a short story I had written. I am returning to this project after 8 years with a more refined view of style. It is also important to definitely realize what are the classics in fashion as well as follow the upcoming trends
Could you share how you expand your vision of art, as a creative director?
It’s important to expand your vision of art in several ways. I think traveling and exploring several art, fashion and music scenes in different cultures allows for one to think more outside of the box.

tory.
What do you think is the hardest thing in your life you've ever had to overcome?
My mother's death and the occurrence of events that followed. Everything surrounding it was extremely difficult for me to overcome and the sequence of events that happened afterward wasn't helping my situation. She was a very creative woman and I believe her artistic endeavors live through me.
What has been the highlight of your career so far and what are your hopes/dreams for the future?
I guess the highlight is that recently I have been successful in working for myself. It is so rewarding because my ideas are coming to life alongside an all-star team...and meeting these great artists in the process! My hopes and dreams are to continue doing what I am doing, be a fashion stylist and creative director in movies and/or TV shows and develop my fashion design project (can't wait for you to all see what I have in store!)

To begin, who are you, besides being a photographer and how did your first get into the photography world?
Who am I besides being a photographer? Hmmmm, it seems to me that almost every aspect of my life is driven by photography. So thats a hard one to answer. I suppose I am a wife who enjoys spending every moment I can with my husband. I have a fun, easy going vibe. I love interesting people and laughing and having a good time with them. I love to travel and go to theme parks to relax and have fun. A good evening would be me surrounded by people I love, watching a good TV show and great food!
I have been into photography for so long that it really does feel like every aspect of my life has something to do with photography. When I was 10 years old, I was given a small camera that I then brought to school with me. I really enjoyed taking photos of my friends and then being able to share those photos with them. I still have some of those photos, and it is such a sweet feeling to know that those special moments in my life so very long ago are still here with me. They keep the memories alive. I realized the camera is a powerful emotional tool and I loved the feeling of being able to reproduce these emotions for people. While I loved the documentary side of photography, my main passion became fashion photography. The TV show "America's Next Top Model" definitely inspired me to go more into the fashion photography world. I loved all the different wardrobes, makeup, and beauty that went into every photo. I love the teamwork and the idea of creating something from nothing. I also love to shoot how I am feeling or how I wish I was feeling. I like to shoot beautiful places and things. It is my release from reality.
You have an incredible career – what have been your highlights?
I feel my highlights are the people I get to create with. I am in a creative market where I am able to work with like-minded people who are extremely passionate about what they are doing as well. The makeup artist whose every brushstroke is done with such care, the hairstylist who creates these incredible pieces of art using hair, the fashion designer who sews every
stitch with vision and dedication, and the model whose zeal brings it all together! When we all get together and do our part to create this piece of art that we are envisioning, and to see the final outcome is such a thrill and gives us all life.
How would you describe your work to someone who has never seen it?
Dramatic fashion with a magical element. I like to mix fashion and fairytale. Disney has always been a huge inspiration of mine and it's in my soul. When I shoot and edit it just seems to come out.
How do you keep yourself motivated and your photographic art in vogue?
There is inspiration all around me every day! I might see a leaf that inspires me to create, or a TV show that sparks me to start working on a photo project. These little things give me motivation to create. I am always working on myself to become a better photographer as well and it motivates me to see my work improve with every shoot. I am always motivated to do better technically and to show off my vision more intently.
How do you manage to make your models feel comfortable in front of the camera?
I think it starts with showing them previous work of mine. It helps them see what my work is all about and helps them feel comfortable with whatever we will create. The planning process is also a big part. I want them to see the mood board and meet the rest of the team in the group chat so we can all kind of get to know each other a bit better before the shoot.

You are going about conducting a photoshoot, could you take us through the typical planning process for your images?
I am definitely a planner. It starts with a small vision of what I want to create. Then I figure out my team that would be the best for the vision I have. I also have to look into getting any permits for the location I decide to use. Pinterest has been a huge inspiration for me. Take my next shoot I am planning for example. It is a shoot with a couple of cute alpacas. I envision the model wearing bright colors inspired by wardrobe from Peru, where alpacas come from. So I look on Pinterest to get an idea of what Peruvian women wear. I create a mood board on Pinterest and talk to a designer about possibly making something inspired by the mood board. I like to start a group chat with the entire creative team to go over the theme/ mood and to send out all the details of the shoot. I usually plan about 3 to 4 hours for hair, makeup, and wardrobe and then we are off to the shoot to create magic!
Tawny, what are some of the struggles you have faced as a fashion photographer in a niche market?
I think my number one struggle is finding new clients. There are a million photographers out there that they can choose from so that is always a hard one. I always tell everyone that is thinking about becoming a photographer that the photography world is not easy. You definitely have to have a passion for this profession. I have seen many people dabble in photography and then get out of it because of all the competition in the industry. It is not easy to find paying work and I do not know many wealthy photographers, but for me, its the only thing I want to do. I live and breathe photography and even when I try to give up and do something else I always find my way back to photography. I think my second biggest struggle is self-doubt and getting caught up in pleasing people. Checking to see how many likes and comments you get. If I post a photo and there is not enough love for it, it disappoints me. I want to do well and I put a bunch of pressure on myself to be the best possible photographer out there. I struggle with thinking I am not good enough all the time. Probably every day. But I do still have that passion to create, learn and grow!
What are your future plans/goals for the next couple of years?
My future plans are to just keep on doing what I love. Learn more about photography and retouching. There will always be more to learn and grow! I would like to travel more and work with people all over the world.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MARIA GRINCHUK
Can you give us a bit of background on how your career evolved?
I was working in the fashion industry in my hometown St.Petersburg, Russia. And photography was my hobby at the moment. I always brought my camera to the different events. Once the designer I worked with had a photoshoot of her new collection, and I worked there as her assistant. As always I brought my camera, and I took some photos of backstage. A few weeks later my boss asked me to show these photos. She liked my photos so much that she put them in her new lookbook. I was shocked and so happy at the same time. It was the first time I thought, maybe I should do photography my fool time job...But I was able to achieve this dream only a few years later, when I moved to the USA.
I started with small steps. I shot portraits of my friends. Then I started to photograph couples, families, and weddings. But I always wanted to try fashion photography. During the Covid time, I had a chance to spend all available time to educate myself and figure out how to start photographing editorials. I met amazing professionals: makeup artists, stylists, models, and designers. All together we created many amazing photo sessions. Many of our editorial shoots were published in different fashion magazines. This is the beginning of my path into the fashion photography industry. I have a lot of plans and a lot of passion about it!
When did your passion for photography start and what were the main milestones that turned you into the artist you currently are?
My passion for photography started on my first trip to a different country. I went everywhere with my camera, and I took photos of everything and everyone. And I was brave enough to come to unknown people and take photos of them. No one told me anything bad, usually people started to pose and smile. The main milestone that turned me into the artist I am is a study of photojournalism in the
St.Petersburg Photo Faculty. I was lucky to learn from a great teacher who taught me of understanding of the photos. Why one photo is a masterpiece, and why another one is just a picture. This is very important; not just to have a feeling that some photo is good, some is not, but understand why is that.
How long does it take to create one of these wonderful works and why you decided to publish it in MALVIE Magazine?
Thank you! It takes about a month or two to create work like this. To have a good result I need time to create the idea with as many mood boards as possible for every participant. Find a good team and the right location takes a lot of time.
I decided to publish my work in Malvie Magazine because I like the style of the magazine. I feel like my photos will be a good fit with MALVIE Magazine. And it is a big honor to be part of it.
What would you say is your style of photography?
Sensuality and mood with a little bit nostalgic.
How do you prepare for your new shootings?
My next photo shoot will take place in New York. This is my favorite city. Right now I am working on ideas trying to combine art, New York, and nature in photo performance.
What should we expect from you in the near future?
In the near future, I want to shoot a social project.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH DAVE LUCAS
Can you give us a bit of background on how your career evolved?
My photography is still largely a hobby that I take seriously. Starting as a budding enthusiast over 25 years ago I took my camera everywhere and shot everything I came across. It wasn’t until 2016 when I decided to try my hand at portraiture, a genre I’d always had a fascination for but thought it would be too hard. I’ve always been fully self taught so I dedicated just over 12 months to reading many books and delving into literally 1000’s of Youtube videos before finally getting models in front of my camera to practice with.
I still continue to learn new things all the time and have found my passion in the beauty, fashion and glamour genres which are my main focus these days. I also do all my own retouching and have been playing with Photoshop since it’s release all those years ago (I’m showing my age now) LOL.
What made you get into photography?
I’ve always been an artistic person and I was drawn to the act of freezing a moment in time and that challenge photography gives you to capture the story in front of you with light. Portraiture is its own challenge and the more I do it the more I come to understand that it’s all about the people and the connection I make with the model more than the photographic side of it (settings, lighting etc).
How hard has it been establishing yourself in the industry and what are some of the largest things you've faced?
Reputation is so important and it takes a long time to build and a moment to lose. To be taken seriously you need to be serious about what you do. Shooting any genre, but particularly glamour/boudoir, being professional and showing respect for those you shoot with is paramount. Building your own style and getting your name out there is a challenge but when it’s a real passion you always find a way to keep going.
Tell me about a time you had a very stressful shooting day and how did you handle it? Any pieces of advice?
I will never forget a location shoot I did a few years ago where I was shooting with a model at a nearby river and my lighting gear blew over in the wind, straight into the water and died instantly. Thankfully I had a reflector with me and decided to shoot using just natural light (in the harsh Australian summer sun).
My advice, always be prepared and have a plan B but most importantly, trust your abilities and learn to adapt and focus on the task at hand, not on the bad situation.
If you could say one thing to someone younger who looks up to you, what would you say? Can I say two things?
1. Always be yourself and trust your instincts to make decisions. Use others work for inspiration but make it your own.
2. Learn your photographic craft so well that you can forget about it when shooting. To get the best out of your model you have to be engaged and in the moment with them. Thinking about settings and lighting will hold you back - it has to be second nature.
How would you describe yourself to people that don't know you?
I am very passionate about my photography, laid back and very easy to get along with and am generally a shy person that transforms into a different person when I have my camera in hand.
What does life look like for you now and where do you see yourself in the future?
I have a full time job (non-photography related) so my photography is mainly done on weekends or in my spare time. I’d love to be able to shoot full time but being realistic, I’m not sure that will ever happen. Regardless, my focus is on being the best I can be and pushing my creativity towards very high-end work that inspires others to do the same and affords me opportunities to work with amazingly talented people.
How did you discover MALVIE and what do you like about MALVIE Magazine?
I came across MALVIE on Kavyar when looking to submit some images from a creative beauty shoot. I was drawn by the style of imagery selected for the magazine so I decided to try my luck in doing a submission. Little did I know I’d end up on the front cover of Vol. 21 (July 2020).
What has been the highlight of your career so far and what are your hopes/dreams for the future?
I don’t know I could single out one highlight but personally, the creatives I get to work with are the highlight for me. From incredibly inspiring teen models, Miss Australia pageant winners to the dedicated and amazing makeup artists, I am blessed to share my passion and craft with like-minded people. I can take a beautiful photograph but it takes a team to create a beautiful image!
