Exclusive Interview

To begin, can you tell us a bit about yourself and how did you get into the photography world? Do you have any formal training in your background? In my early twenties I had a girlfriend who was a model I went to many shoots and shows with her. One day I decided to buy some better photo gear and from there my hobby started. Because I had a really good job as an IT-manager it took me many years before I went pro and started my own studio. After I quit my job I did my master in photography first, then started to pursue my dream to be an international top fashion photographer. At that time I didn’t know how difficult that road was.

What inspired you to get into fashion photography?

My mother was a model and she designed my clothes when I was young, that started my interest in fashion.

What's the best part of being a photographer? What do you love the most about your job?

There are so many thing I love about this job I always remember my first photo in photo Vogue Italy. The Vogue logo on my photo’s was such a good feeling and I hope one day to shoot for that magazine. Then my first time at the Haute couture shows at Paris Fashion Week for Baroqco jewelry I was super proud to stand there between top photographers from all over the world. After that Cannes film festival, World topmodel in Monte Carlo, AltaRoma fashion week and if Covid didn’t came Golden Globes in Hollywood and many other big shows around the world. The feel and atmosphere at these shows are great everybody in and around the shows are dressed fashionable. I always love to do shoots between or after the shows in the streets or nice locations.

What is the best way to find work as a fashion photographer?

I know now that being artistic and being good at photography is not enough you also need business skills. With that I’m still struggling I hope to master that last needed skill one day.

Do you plan each photo out or are they created more organically?

Some shoots we plan from an idea talk about it then put together the best possible team, sometimes I just start and see where it’s going. Both can give great results.

What inspires you and what gives you ideas to create your beautiful images? Can your ideas change depending on the model you are working with?

When I work with a great team and everybody is on a high level we all inspire each other to do better. Some models can surprise you and make you change your shoot totally.

From your experience, what is the key to getting the best out of a model?

If I work in the studio I always have a big mirror and shoot tethered with a screen facing the model so the model can see the results. After a couple of shots I stop and walk trough the photos and if needed discuss what we can do better. A great shoot is teamwork so you both need to know what results you are searching for and give it both your verry best. With some models you have that special professional click, when I’m thinking about a pose the model is doing it already.

Who is the person that inspires you the most and why? What will be the suggestions to new photographers?

There are many people that inspire me specially fashion photographers as Mario Testino or Peter Lindbergh they did ground breaking work. For new photographers it’s important to find your own style and build a strong portfolio. In these times its also important to be very active on social media something I forget a lot.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

If I watch shoots or catwalks from icons like Naomi Campbell or a model like Winnie Harlow I always think I wish I was there with my camera.

What projects are you working on next, and what are your goals for the future?

I just finished a vintage shoot with our model agency DMA and will be busy with editing the coming days. For my future I just want to develop my skills more specially the business side, my ultimate goal is shooting for the big fashion brands and magazines on a regular base

Where can we see more of your works and get connected with you?

My Facebook is Marcel Maximiliaan Schwab, Instagram schwab.marcel my website I’m still working on marcelschwab.com

When the pandemic came and we first heard about Covid, the life as we knew had to adapt to a whole new way of living. We couldn’t go out anymore, we had to work from home – the one of us that were lucky enough to be able to do so - and some people couldn’t even see their families. It changed everything. Including the way we were used to dress.

Our biggest goal was to be confortable in our clothes and in our home, even because the world was uncomfortable enough as it was. So we started to wear baggy clothes, sweatsuits were a must-have in everybodys closet. That’s when a lot of new trends became popular – do you remember the tie-dye fever? And what about the shoes? We really said ‘au revoir’ to chunky sneakers, boots and high-heels, all we needed were socks and maybe some sandals. It was not even close to the ideal world outside, but we were very cozy inside – as we should be - and some people were really happy with this way of dressing, even if they didn’t wear it before. Me, for exemple, when I thought about how many days I spent inside skinny jeans or in crop-tops so small that I couldn’t even move properly, it was like hearing about life in the 1700’s: did I really use to live like this? Did all people use to live like this?

What I’m saying is: some people found a style that made them happy and confortable in their clothes, but will it be okay – or even possible – to keep those clothes now? Of course we’re excited and, most of all, re-

lieved that the pandemic is coming to an end and we can finally start to live normally again, but we got to take a look at all the changes – or unchanges – that are coming with it. And we cannot say a lot right now, but we can already see somethings, like: Fashion is taking an extremely different way from the one before. Luxury and extravaganza are making a comeback. Shining fabrics, big volumes and different structures are dominating the runways, the redcarpets and even the streetstyle.

When you analize history, you can see that’s normal, Fashion ia a real sign of the times and it works as a pendulum: it goes from princess dresses to suits in a minute, as it goes from sweatsuits to cut-out dresses. At the moment one trend hits its saturation point, the opposite of it is waiting on the other side. But the point is: what happened to going slow? What happened to seeking confort? Do we really need to give up on the one freedom an we found in lockdown?

Fashion is betting on all things skin-baring as a mood lifter, and we need that right now so I really want to be excited about that, especially as a lover of Fashion and as a big fan of great designs. But I’m worried about the pressure we, as a society, will experience in order to achieve the "perfect back-to-normal look”.

For now, the “Before and After” moments are not that concrete, some places are more Covidfree than others and not everybody is able to go back to public spaces and big events yet, so we do have some in-between space, what give us a little time to think about what we want to dress when everything really becomes normal again. But as things are starting to get better, it is already a big preoccupation of the media and, of course, the Fashion Industry, to imagine this After and all of the new ways of dressing and styling that will come – some might not even be new, but a comeback of styles that bring a nostalgic feeling, like the 2000’s trend that came really strong in the

Our life is going back to normal, and so is Fashion. But what does it really mean? Do we really want it right now?

last months.. Obviously, the extent to which you want to dress up remains a personal choice. Many people are cheered by the idea of using clothing as their pick-me-up strategy – what can be really helpful for them. But that’s not a general feeling, and for other people it’s really scary to face a world where clothes are so revealing again. It goes a long way from clothing, actually, because it’s easy to doubt ourselves when people are so happy about showing and talking about “summer bodies”. Like, should I have been focusing on different cosmetics and trainings back when I was simply trying to survive?

We went from going easy on ourselves to being pressured really fast. Last year, Fashion and everything else was centered around physical comfort, which was necessary to achieve mental and psychological confort —something that has always been needed, but became even more important in the crazy times we were living. It gave us the feeling of freedom to not think about how we looked to others or if we were doing something wrong just by dressing and being a certain

way. To let go of the idea that we needed to appear a certain way and achieve a certain level of grooming simply to do our job and live our lives. I hoped that we would embrace this feeling and, in the same way that we got to reconsider the way we do so many other things — work, communicate, structure our days, talk to people — we might found a way to adapt the “new normal” to the “old normal”.

Instead, things feel like they're moving even faster, with fashion and beauty standards and changes being even more accelerated than they were berore. When it comes to fashion, it’s ecologically and socially unsustainable to think and to sell the ideia that we need to spend so much money and energy into keeping up with the latest trends. And we also have the idea of post-pandemic “revenge shopping,” that while understandable, feels wrong when we thing about one of the biggest lessons we've learned in the past year: we don’t need much.

79 Fashion & Beauty | June 2021

Happy to have you here, Alessandro. Tell us your story, how did you get started modeling and where is your home at the moment?

Thank you for this space Malvie. I started modeling as a child. I was a model baby for Gerber product brand in 1997. From there things were appearing on its own and I live in Mexico currently.

Looking back how has modeling experience changed your personal/professional life? Have you grown more comfortable with yourself since you have started?

It's been a series of changes along my path. Physical and personal acceptance (hated being redhead), modeling has opened me doors, rather than economic, spiritual and many friends.

Is there anything you wish you had known when you first got into modeling?

The best way to live it is not to know it.

What is the best advice you have ever been given by a photographer?

All the photographers I worked with have been exceptional, I owe them a lot of what I am now, Marino Parisotto, Daniel López, Mark Beas, Roy Araiza, Lizeth Villaseñor, Carlos Arjona in this new project and more photographers they have made me feel unique and special.

What are your favorite genres and styles of modeling? In your opinion, what are your strongest features as a model? High Fashion and Editorial always.

If you hadn't become a model, what else do you think you would be doing? Singer.

What's something you haven't achieved but hope to? Make a world inspiration.

When you want to unwind, what are your favorite go-to activities?

Dancing, riding, reading, letting my imagination blow up to complement it with modeling.

If you could say something to everyone on the planet, what would it be? Be free.

What projects are you working on next, and what are your goals for the future?

Many people don't like the idea that you're always in constant activity. My medium-term goal is to move to Spain to continue modeling in one of the best agencies in the country. That's my reason for always being creating.

Where can we see more of your works and get connected with you?

It would be an honor for me, in my Instagram constantly published my works and collaborations @alessandrouge.

Exclusive Interview with Mysterie Sylla

Mysterie, how did you get involved with modeling? Where are you based now?

Once I moved to Guadalajara, Mexico I accompanied my roommate to a party. At the party I met 3 girls from Canada. They were visiting Mexico on a modeling trip. They saw me and told me that I should be a model. They introduced me to a modeling agency here in Mexico and I got my start from there.

Tell us more about yourself. What else do you do next to modeling?

I am an English teacher. I love working with children and traveling.

What do you love most about being a model? And, what do you least enjoy?

What I love most about being a model is working with artist to help create their vision. What I least enjoy is sometimes getting my face painted with tons of makeup.

Who is someone you feel has really influenced you? Why?

Someone who has really influenced me is my 8th grade teacher. She is a very kind person and she teaches and disciplines through love. She taught me that it is possible to discipline through kindness.

What fuels your imagination and provides you with inspiration?

What fuels my imagination and provides me with inspiration is playing with children and visiting a new place. I also love to go on walks and take trips in nature.

Share your wildest photo shoot/modeling story. I once went on a two day modeling trip and at the end of the job the client told me that they were not going to be able to pay me that day. I didn’t get paid for that job until 4 months later.

What are your achievements you are proud most of today?

I’m most proud of graduating college and moving to a new country by myself. I’m also proud of learning Spanish and finding my place in Mexico. After living in many houses I finally found a place where I feel safe and comfortable living.

What would be your advice to models on getting more followers/attention on social media?

Post consistently everyday the time that Instagram tells you in your stats that you receive the most activity. Also post about things other than modeling. Let your follows get to know a bit of who you are personally.

What is your advice for people to be happier, healthier and more full of love?

Realize that what always comes first is taking care of yourself. If you need a break, give yourself a break. Work in accordance to your personal needs.

What projects are you working on next, and what are your goals for the future?

My goals are to build a business doing something I love. I am currently working on my social networks.

Where can we see more of your works and get connected with you?

My Instagram @Mysterie.sylla

Racism goes against everything we believe here in MALVIE

Whether it comes in big gestures, like bullying and name-calling, or disguised as “jokes”, racism is violent. It is always aggressive and has the only purpose to oppress people. And that is something we can no longer tolerate. As we live in a world where people are being discriminated and even murdered for their skin color and genetic features, it is our mission to try to make life a little less scary.

You are not alone!

You deserve to be respected and appreciated for who you are, and nobody has the right or the power to say otherwise.

We know we cannot change everything on our own, but we are doing our best to help in any way possible and to show our support in the making of a society in which everyone is safe, respected and gets every opportunity they deserve.

We know it will take time for us to make big changes with worldwide impacts, but we can try and star t somewhere. That’s why we created MALVIE Noir, a special edition destined to empower people of c olor and make their voices heard through the art. Also, in the immediate term, we are donating proceeds to a black led organizations that fights racial injustice.

Exclusive Interview With Paweł Włodarczyk

To begin, can you tell us a bit about yourself and how did you get into the photography world? Do you have any formal training in your background?

I'm a portrait photographer based in Warsaw. I started my journey when I was 8 years old, my father bought me my first camera (analog!), through the years I have periods when I was doing wedding photography, later landscape and also business portraits. Last 2 years I'm focusing on beauty, portrait, fashion, sometimes boudoir photography.

I participated in many photography workshops, read a lot of books and also analyze works of masters.

I appreciate that I can contribute to your publications ;)

You have a very unique style. How would you describe your photography to someone who has never seen it?

Colors, details, emotions, connection ;)

What is one last impression you want to leave in your photographs?

To show more emotions.

Beauty photography comes with a lot of stress, how do you handle it?

Before the event, I'm preparing a session plan and have discussed it with my team: model, makeup artist, etc. Also important is to have a nice and friendly atmosphere during the event, it helps.

What's going through your mind when you are on set behind the camera?

I try to have a good connection with the model, to capture subtle pose and emotions and also I have to control the light, background and framing. That is a time when I'm not thinking about anything else than the session.

You bring a very high production value to your work. What is your retouching/production philosophy? How important is Photoshop in your final images?

For me, raw images are only a part of the final images. Retouching is not only removing dirt and blemishes because I try to add my interpretation, impression and understanding. That's why color grading, tones, softness and hardness are so important.

Are you the sort of photographer who plans for every minuscule detail or are you more spontaneous with your creations? Where do you find the majority of your inspiration?

I try to plan in detail, but having space for spontaneity.

Inspirations? Lately on Instagram, but also during my walks.

What advice would you give to someone looking at a career in photography?

Study the work of the masters and train a lot, as practice makes perfect. Think about what to improve in your work. Remember about attending photography workshops.

What types of projects are dearest to your heart?

Creative studio beauty and outdoor portraits with shallow depth of field.

What projects are you working on next, and what are your goals for the future?

This summer and early autumn I will try to organize outdoor portrait sessions (subject: summer in the city) and also take some landscape pictures in the mountains.

Late autumn and winter I'm thinking about studio beauty sessions: shine and glow, a palette of colors and more.

Where can we see more of your works and get connected with you?

You can find me here: instagram.com/pablo456.pl maxmodels.pl/fotograf-pablo456.html

There is only a part of my current portfolio, more to come ;)

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

is beauty in absolutely everything Mariya

Mariya, can you tell us a little about yourself and what brought you to photography?

As a child, I was equally attracted to music and drawing. I also sang, played the piano, wrote songs and arrangements. In general, I am a versatile creative person. Later, drawing people grew into a passion for photography and working with people. I started photography in 2009, but then for me it was just a hobby. I graduated as a film and television sound engineer. I worked on radio, in a recording studio and continued to shoot for the soul. But the further, the more life led me towards photography. I got clients, I got followers and students, I started giving master classes and retouching photos for famous photographers. Now I am also developing my camera skills, shooting and working with video, and this inspires me even more. For me, these directions are inseparable and it seems to me that they feed each other.

What inspired you to get into photography? What fascinates you about fashion and beauty photography most?

I like to work with everything beautiful and create beautiful things. I like fashion and everything new. And this is exactly what attracts me to fashion and beauty photography.

You've clearly worked with a wide range of models, what tips can you recommend to models looking to expand their portfolio?

Yes you are right. I would like to advise models to be bolder and more confident in presenting themselves. Don't be afraid to try and make mistakes, and don't be afraid to turn to photographers whose creativity and vision you love. Make more different shots and show them on your social networks. When I go to the site or page of a model, I really want to see what she is capable of. And I can't figure it out just from selfie photos. As a photographer, I pay attention to how the model fits into the image. Therefore, I would like to say to the models: "shoot more often and be sure to demonstrate your versatile shooting."

How do you connect with your models? Do they tend to be people you know or strangers?

I have a very specific taste for models, so I am scrupulous about their choice. The choice of the model's type usually dictates the intended shooting style. I am certainly comfortable working with familiar models, as well as them with me. But the fashion needs updates and I am constantly on the lookout for new faces. I really love working with professional models. But I can also see potential in beginners. And many of my works with novice models look no worse than with professionals. At such moments, it is important to support the model and convince her that she is a star.

Are you the sort of photographer who plans for every minuscule detail or are you more spontaneous with your creations? Where do you find the majority of your inspiration?

It would be more correct to say that I think over every detail in advance. And yes, of course, there is always some preparation. These are the rules for shooting success. But in truth, there is also a lot of improvisation during the shoot. I love these moments, they bring a little adrenaline to the process. And the shooting is more creative.

What are the most important lessons you have learned about photography so far?

If you asked this question 6-7 years ago, then I would answer like this: "Photography taught me that there is beauty in absolutely everything. But you need to be able to see it." But now my horizons have expanded and I understand that photography is not only beautiful. And in general, the concept of the beautiful is very blurred today. A person is very multifaceted and he reacts not only to the beautiful. In his memory, not only beautiful moments remain, but also strange, unusual, scary and even creepy ones.

Yes, it all depends on what genre you work in and what feelings of people you want to control. What feelings do you want to evoke in yourself first of all? People who create only beautiful things often hide pain inside themselves. And it is not at all necessary that those who show pain in their photos do not see the beautiful at all. This is our choice: how we want to see and show this world.

Fashion photography comes with a lot of stress, how do you handle it?

Yes, I am always worried before a big shoot and I feel a lot of responsibility. But there are also people on my team. They are not robots and experience the same stress. Therefore, only mutual support, friendship and a little sense of humor during the process helps to work easily.

Is there one piece of equipment or prop that you cannot live without?

Well, of course! The set of equipment that is now available helps me a lot in my work. But in fact, today everything can be rented. The main thing is your thoughts and your ideas. Your ability to make something out of nothing. Even having a phone with a camera, today you can express yourself very cool.

What is one last impression you want to leave in your photographs?

The world is going through difficult times right now. And it affected everyone. I would like to inspire people to believe in the best with my next projects.

What exciting new project should we expect from you in the future?

There are a lot of ideas. But, as mentioned above, the main goal is to inspire people. What exactly this will be a secret for now.

Where can we see more of your works and get connected with you?

Matryoshka is the most famous and most popular of all Russian souvenirs. Traditionally, this is a doll in the image of a young Russian woman, dressed in a national costume and with a scarf on her head. In a classic matryoshka doll, all the dolls in the set look the same, but in our imagination it looks exactly like this.
