Can you give us a bit of background on how your career evolved?

At the beginning of my career, I was driven by the desire to capture the wonderful moments of the ma ny-sided world around us. I traveled a lot in search of myself, my individuality. I met different people, tried to see their inner world and reflect it in my pho tographs. Thanks to my perseverance and the sup port of people close to me, I have mastered various styles, shooting children, couples, women and men portraits. In the process of my personal growth, I realized that in addition to the beauty around me, there is also my no less beautiful world, and I decid ed to eventually realize myself as a studio fashion photographer.

What would you say is your style of photography?

The S

In addition to the elegant image, I set myself the task of capturing to the viewer all the unusual creative atmo sphere of my photographs. I strive to make my photos as honest and open as possible, putting all of myself into every frame. So I try to be closer to the viewer.

How do you prepare your new shootings?

It all starts with the team that I and the stylist / makeup artist work for. Together we create the entire process of preparing for the photo session. Gernering ideas, creating projects. We coordinate views of models, make sketches of clothes and makeup.

As a child I was fond of painting and practiced hard in drawing. As a result, a fascinating path of creative realization led me to photography.

What should we expect from you in the near future?

How long does

take to create one of these wonderful works and why you decided to publish it in MALVIE Magazine?

As in any serious business, creating a masterpiece requires a lot of perseverance, work and dedication. When you love what you do, time ceases to matter. Result-oriented mind and soul are the keys to suc cess. Founded by Marius Ciobanu, MALVIE Maga zine, distributed internationally in print, amazed me with its elegance, expression of freedom of creative thought and luxury. Photos in the magazine are striking in their ultimatum and veracity of feelings. MALVIE Magazine is a very informative and sophis ticated magazine.

I am sure that creative realization has no limitations. The world of photography is very dynamic and I have enough space for successful photography. As usual, my goal is to maximize the pleasure, feelings and emotions of viewers from view ing the photographs I have created.

Tell us about the development process that culminated in the artist you are today.

I describe the process as a neverending restless season. Many hours I sit in front of the screen trying to figure out what works and what does not. I think it pays off on every photo.

How did you discover your passion for photography?

I discovered this passion through cosplay. My photography adventure started at comic conventions trying to do justice to people in their costumes. “Don’t over-edit”. That’s what I would tell myself.

If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before beginning your career what would it be?

What's been the biggest highlight in your career so far?

Everyday is a new highlight for me because every day brings new opportuni ties to capture photographs.

How would you describe yourself to people that don't know you?

I am known by many as Chocoman. I tend to introduce myself to new people that way. It makes them laugh and it’s a great ice breaker.

Who is the person that inspires you the most and why?

I am largely self-motivated. I don’t know anyone else who could have been a role model for me in this craft.

What does life look like for you now and where do you see yourself in the future?

Photography-wise I’m in a good place right now. However, I am not content remaining in that place and I want to continue and grow and reach new heights. The sky is the limit but my goal is the stars.

You are a brilliant artist. What is your story? I had this school assignment work done in collab oration with a makeup artist. The work focused on avant garde makeup and I had a very short time to set it up, but when we looked at the results with the team,we were so happy that somebody joked about proposing it to a magazine. I took the challenge for real and started to look for magazines that could be interested in the topic. MALVIE came straight out from my online research. I found the standard was very high. I was browsing through the recent front covers and I felt almost intimidated for it was one of my first experiences in the world of beauty. But still I decided to give it a try. It didn't go that bad.

You have created a unique artistic style. Tell us about it and how you developed it. Art has been my life. I grew up being exposed and engaged in all the arts from a very early age due to both my parent's work. I have photographed the atre, music, models, fashion, photojournalism, and everything in between. I don’t know that I have a particular style, I just try to be well rounded and cre ate the best image I can in every situation. My back ground in the Arts from dance, theatre, painting, etc has definitely affected my "photographic eye". I be lieve in quality over quantity. I'm not one to use spe cial effects nor do I manipulate images much other than basic retouching. I try to keep things as true to their natural form as possible. Having grown up in the darkroom I especially love Black and White photography and I love photographing people.

What are the technical challenges of this kind of photography and how did you over come them?

I've been out of the fashion world for some time and only recently started to get back into it. I've been working on independent projects from docu menting homelessness inside a Tent City, of which I've had several exhibits, to collaborating with The Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice on a photographic book of female Jazz artists, "Shifting The Narrative", being developed for publication. I think for me the biggest technical challenge is work ing as a team. Fashion photography is definitely a team effort consisting of models, designers, styl ists, make-up, etc. One needs to be able to adapt easily to change. A foot, hand, or wrong placement of anything can make or break an image. It all has to come together just right. Working with so many different personalities can be quite challenging.

How long does it take to create one of these wonderful works?

For a high fashion studio shoot, there is much involved. The designer first spends much time, heart and soul creating their design. Then you have to collaborate with the photographer, models, make-up artist, etc, and get everyone's schedules to match up for a day of work. Changing clothing, Make-up, then shooting takes hours. After shooting, a photographer's job just begins—going through all of the images, choosing the best shots, and re touching. All are extremely time-consum ing. It's a lot of work.

What does life look like for you now and where do you see yourself in the future?

First and foremost, as we all know, Covid-19 has definitely put a damper on things. Collaborations of any sort are risky right now, but moving into 2021, I am looking forward to my continued col laborations with Adrian Alicea (a few of his designs showcased here). Adrian is a genius. His work is exquisite. Not only is his work amazing, but as a person, he is most humble with a beautiful heart. We both come from a similar place of being completely passionate about what we are doing and we both have a need to con stantly be creating. Working with Adrian has been an incredible experience and a wonderful way to get back into fashion shooting. I'm also looking forward to this upcoming photographic book in develop ment with the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. Besides this, I'm hoping to continue being published and collaborating with other designers and models, as well as anyone else interested in collaborating with me. I'm always seek ing new innovative projects of any and all kinds. There isn't too much work or any project that I'd turn down. Of course, I'd love to be known as an amazing photog rapher; exhibiting, getting calls to shoot the best models, and traveling around the world, but being recognized for one's work in any capacity is always appreciat ed! Please briefly tell us about your background. Who is Lia Konrad as an artist?

I grew up in a small town in Germany. As a child, I was always creative and into art and fantasy. With age 14, I discovered the endless editing opportunities offered by Photoshop and started to use it to create my own images from scratch, with which I wanted to tell a story. A few years later, I got my first camera and started with photography and now I have been in the business for 10 years, specialising in fantasy and beauty photography.

I would tell myself to not stand in my own way. During many years I told myself that it was too dif ficult to stand out in the photography industry and make a living out of it, because there were many photographers to compete with. I was holding my self back by thinking like that.

In 2014, I assisted the photographer Benjamin Von Wong with the preparation of an international fan tasy photo-shoot in a cave in Saalfeld. During this experience, I felt the passion to bring my own vi sions by putting them into images. Quickly, I had the opportunity to work with international clients on fantasy projects, which marked the beginning of my career in fantasy photography. It wasn´t until 2019 that I started with Beauty Photography, dis covering that it is a style that I enjoy a lot too!

My goals are to extend the reach of my business, grow my reputation more internationally and inspire young people to follow their creative visions. This year, I will continue with a fantasy project called “Moon Tales”, which I started in 2015. It consists of a series of fantasy-beauty photographies with models posing in fancy white dresses at a stunning scene in the nature, using an illumination that imi tates the moonlight in terms of its colour and tone. Each of these photographies will tell a different tale.

If you find your niche and offer something different to other artists, you can grow quicker. Since I start ed with fantasy photography, which involves heavy Photoshop editing, I was able to find my niche very quickly. Introducing Beauty Photography into my services allowed me to extend my audience offer ing my photography to more people.

We admire the exquisite level of detail in all your works. Does your creative process start from a certain image in your mind, or do you seek inspiration as you progress?

I find inspiration in various elements: peo ple, art, fashion, and travel among them. Once I have a specific idea or concept in mind I start a process of extensive re search through books, magazines and var ious websites. I then put together a mood board and often seek input from the talents I work with as part of my creative process.

What are the technical challenges of this kind of photography and how did you over come them?

Shooting on location always has its unforeseen challenges. Being supported by a good assistant and a good team spirit is key to overcome any is sues.

Has your vision and style evolved or changed over time?

Absolutely! Through the years I experimented with different light techniques and other elements. How ever, I’ve always came back to a minimal, clean and simple esthetic.

When did your passion for photography start and what were the main mile stones that turned you into the artist you currently are?

I developed an interest in photography short ly after moving to Dubai from Canada where I was pursuing studies in fashion marketing. It was in Lebanon that I took a first photo graph that sparked my interest in photog raphy. There was something magical about being able to capture a moment that invokes emotion, in other words to capture a feeling that can be relived. The shot went on to win a corporate contest. The next milestones in cluded my first publication in a fashion mag azine, and being invited to expose at an art gallery. Ironically though, it is after a hiatus of doing shoots following the birth of my son that I have been able to look at my work with a fresh eye and be on the path that I am now.

If you could say one thing to someone younger who looks up to you, what would you say?

Work hard and persevere, always. Be respectful towards everyone you work with at all times. And lastly, find a mentor who will guide you and inspire you.

What's the most important thing you want your potential clients to know about you?

I am deeply passionate about the fashion and beauty industry, both on a personal and profes sional level. Since the beginning of my educational journey via L’Ecole superieure de mode de Montre al, courses at Conde Nast College in London, and training at the Istituto di Fotografia in Milan, I have thrived on creating and delivering effective fashion and beauty photography.

What has been the highlight of your career so far and what are your hopes/ dreams for the future?

Being published in a regional leading fashion magazine for the first time was undeni ably a highlight. We are just at the beginning of 2021, finally looking at brighter times ahead. In the next few months I aspire to work with talented, driven individuals to create beautiful and inspiring editorial stories. Having my work acknowledged by an aspiring local designer or a fashion house are at the top of my bucket list.
