Letter from Valentina I believe we all have high expectations for this year. And that’s a good thing. The world has been through a lot and so did we, so we deserve to feel a little hope and to be positive. That’s what the New Years are for, right? Even though we cannot control what is going to happen with us and our lives, we can train our minds to see the good in the situations we’ll be facing in the next months. To start the year with the right mindset is the best way to keep ourserlves together – even if we might go through some not-so-ideal things – and that’s all I wish for me, for you and for us in 2022. We’ll find the motivation to follow our dreams, to reach our goals and maybe even to start something that may seems like a wild idea – those are actually the best ones. It’s going to be a great year because we’re going to make it a great year. Valentina Roque Fashion Journalist

Exclusive Interview with Ryan Joseph
" I am always looking to develop my lighting knowledge further and to always experiment with new ways to process photos to find my look"
Could you please briefly introduce yourself, and tell us about your first encounter with photography? Who has influenced you to start taking photographs? My name is Ryan Joseph. I was born and grew up in San Diego, California. My obsession with film and photography started when I was young. My father was recording me and my siblings on the couch with an old Canon Zr45mc. It was at that moment I realized a fascination with cameras. I have been attached to the craft ever since. I learned to convey emotion and tell a story within the frame both in motion and in stills. I soon developed an obsession with technical proficiency and combined it with my creative instincts to reach my unique
style, which I'm excited to utilize on every project. My experiences and mentors have fueled that fascination into a fire that I hope someday earns me a place in a long legacy of lens masters. That journey has just begun. What is one last impression you want to leave in your photographs? I am always looking for one of three things. Tone, emotion, provocative. Usually I find if you can achieve one of these, the other two are there as well. It's about finding the motivation to WHY this photograph exists. Does it ask a question, convey and emotion, or bring a mood to the viewer?
Fashion & Beauty | January 2022
You've clearly worked with a wide range of models, what tips can you recommend to models looking to expand their portfolio? I have worked with dozens of wonderful people throughout the years and in my opinion there is one thing that separates a decent model from a great one: Having their own voice. A great model is able to take a direction, setting, or prop and catapult it into another layer of storytelling. I don't want to pose for them. I want them to pose WITH me. There should be a dance between the lighting, environment, model, and camera at all times during the shoot to really find something special. What are the most important lessons you have learned about photography so far? The most important lesson I've learned so far is never underestimate how important lighting, color grading is. These are absolutely the main thing that will bring your photos to life and have you stand out from the rest. I am always looking to develop my lighting knowledge further and to always experiment with new ways to process photos to find my look. How long does a shoot day typically last and what is the preparation like? A shoot day for me can be pretty grueling. I like to take my time and find the moment. Whether it's going out to incredible locations in nature, or dialing in just the right lighting for a set or studio, I'd always prefer to shoot longer. Some of the best photos are taken when both the model and photographer are creatively vulnerable which can really only happen deep into a session. Preparation starts with a few broad strokes of a concept (wardrobe, lighting, environment, pose, or props) and then I build from there.
11
graded and that is it. I really only retouch if a model requests it, or if I am submitting to a client or a specific publication where that is unfortunately the expectation. Everyone is beautiful in their own way and this obsession with "perfect skin" with zero wrinkles or stretch marks or moles etc. does not exist. I don't find it appealing. I'd rather look at something tangible. In your opinion, what is the difference between fashion and beauty photography? What's your favorite? Fashion photography is focusing mostly on the wardrobe and lifestyle aesthetic of the image. It is an entire vibe being created and there is more room for the photographer to make a statement. Beauty photography is focusing more on that perfect, unobtainable utopia of beauty that I mentioned before. It has a large emphasis on makeup artistry and photoshop retouching with perfectly even lighting. And typically 3/4 shots or headshots. While I respect the craft I am not focusing on that particular path. In your own eyes, what was the moment that your career took off? I am extremely thankful for where I am today. Photo/Film is my full-time job. That being said I still believe my career is taking off. I am constantly in the state of learning. These past 3-5 years have been merely the building blocks for the empire I look to create. I'm just getting started.
Are you the sort of photographer who plans for every minuscule detail or are you more spontaneous with your creations? Where do you find the majority of your inspiration? This really depends on the shoot. Though there are some exceptions, most of the time I am spontaneous and love to see where things go. Inspiration comes from the context of the situation.
Outside of photography, what else blows your mind? Filmmaking is actually my first crush. My journey is to be the Cinematographer for large narrative projects. Random facts: I love technology. Huge passion of mine. I have been following the tech scene for as long as I can remember. I have an obsession with the newest devices and seeing what they can do. I'm also an avid gamer. PS5 > Xbox 😇 I also ride a Harley Fat Bob whenever I don't need camera gear with me. Oh, and I love cats.
You bring a very high production value to your work. What is your retouching/production philosophy? How important is Photoshop in your final images? To be completely honest I dislike the idea of Photoshop and retouching. 90% of my photographs that you see on my Instagram are simply color

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH
Ernesto Ayala
Ernesto, can you tell us more about yourself and how did you get involved in the photography business? I’m a 22 year old photographer based in Mexico City. I was born and raised in the city of Cancun, Mexico, I don’t come from a family of artists but my parents were always supportive when it came to being creative, I truly am who I am today because of them. I have always been a creative person, as a kid I would spend days just drawing and sketching, so when smartphones became a think I would always snap photos of things that caught my attention, I really got into photography thanks to my ex-girlfriend l, she’s a model and one day I went with her to a photoshoot and I it was amazing, just seeing the photographer direct the model and what he was able to create with the camera truly got me, a couple of days later I bought a camera and never looked back. I think the main reason that I have improved so much in my technique so rapidly is because of my ex-girlfriend, I mean I started my photography career with a professional model at hand, I owe her a lot in a professional sense and to this day I keep her close to my heart. How did you mode specifically towards fashion and fashion photography? What does beauty mean to you? I don’t think I ever made the choice of focusing on fashion work, i just started gravitating more and more into it, Looking back at it just makes sense, when I started I was more focused on portrait work and to this day a lot of what makes my work unique is the intimacy of it, so in a sense my photography is a mix between fashion and classic portrait photography. To me beauty is a concept of basic human nature, we all see the beauty in nature, architecture and art, it’s human instinct. We’re all capable of recognizing beauty in our surroundings is part of what makes
us human, and we’re all beautiful in our own unique way. Ernesto, how would you describe your photographic vision? What kind of look do you try and create in your photos? I describe my vision as a constant search for emotion, is not only about how good a photo looks, it’s about how it makes you feel and what emotions can you convey in a still frame, that’s why I love photography as an artistic medium, we’re capturing a little piece of time with a si gel push of a button. The look I go for with my work is like an old painting, like a painting by Rembrandt or one by Vermeer, just shooting my models with natural light in and trying to show intimacy in a personal level. What inspires you and what gives you ideas to create your beautiful images? Can your ideas change depending on the model you are working with? I think I get inspired from the media I consume, that could be music, movies and other photographers work, it’s just an amalgamation of my interests. I have changed ideas to fit more with my models, the model is the face of a project and sometimes you have to adjust thing on the fly and adapt to your model. Could you take us through the typical planning process for your images? The first thing is the coming up with an idea that could be realistically done, I’ve so many projects that I just can’t feasibly bring to life right now. So after settling on an idea it’s time to plan out the project and start recruiting the team, first a model that fits the project, then a hair and Make up artists that can bring to life my ideas and a Fashion stylist that understands the project. After planning everything I like meeting the team before the day of the photoshoot to exchange ideas and continue to push the project forward I
love listening to my team because each one of the brings something unique to the table. Would you have any tips for non-models on how to look good in front of the camera? Confidence goes a long way! it’s important to feel comfortable in front of the camera and always show yourself as you are! Your projects are a collaborative process. Tell us what is like to always be working with new stylists, models, and makeup artists. One of the reasons I love about being a photographer is meeting new people everyday! That could be models, makeup artists or stylists, I get to meet so many talented people and exchange ideas and different perspectives , i enjoy it so much! In your opinion, what makes the good picture stand out from the average? How do you choose which images you provide to your clients? I think a good photo stands out right away because of a mix of composition and feel, it’s a com-
bination of technique and artistry. I normally choose the photos I deliver based on my clients needs and the vision I had of the project. What projects are you working on next, and what are your goals for the future? I have a project I’d love to talk about but, I have to keep it a secret for now! My main goal for the foreseeable future is to keep publishing my work to reach an international audience and continue to grow as an artist. Where can we see more of your works and get connected with you? I mainly show my work on my Instagram @ photoernie. I like to keep my followers updated on upcoming projects and behind the scenes so everyone can see a little bit of my creative process.

Exclusive Interview with Song Choi Song, could you please briefly introduce yourself, and tell us about your first encounter with photography? Who has influenced you to start taking photographs? Hello, i’m Song Choi professional fashion photographer based in Seoul, Korea. I can’t remember my very first encounter moment with photography but definitely it was through Vogue Korea magazine. when i was young, there were always my mother’s Vogue Korea magazines on the table in our living room. I often read them when i had nothing to do. There were many stunning editorial photos by great photographers and i started to be exposed to fashion photographies. Still i’m into 90’s and 2000’s mood than recent trends. And there was my father’s old Nikon camera. I started my photographs with it. So literally my parents have influenced me to start photographs. From your point of view, what are the most difficult aspects of professional fashion photography? Keeping myself fresh, passionate with decent techniques and being survived in reality. Living as professional fashion photographer means you are belonging to a highly competitive market. not losing dream and passion while living in harsh reality is quiet hard but needed. Unless you will be just professional robot holding camera. As the expert you are, what are the unique features of this kind of photography and the keys to master it? This field is the most accurate field for explaining meaning of commercial art. Photographs can be used commercially. and for that purpose we should cooperate with other fields like fashion design, hair/makeup field. Amateurs can do alone but in professional level, each person can’t do multiple roles. And fashion photography is asking you high standard of technique and being, decent senses and shows identity of each photographers than other photography fields. To master what this field asks, study shouldn’t be stopped and we should be opened to new matters. In these days, there are many channels we can study. not like old times that the only way was working as assistant of senior photographer. (Still
this way is really great though) most of all, not losing passion is essential. That can be absolute answer. In your opinion, how beauty is perceived at the present age? What does photography mean to you personally and what really makes a woman beautiful? In my opinion, meaning of beauty at the present age is bit different with before. There were some standards and they tightened people like corset. There couldn’t be negative answer against it. Follow well or not only. but nowadays people respect difference more than before. Different hair colors, different skin colors, different shape of bodies, different appearances and different ideas. of course still there are some standards about appearance but at least we are stepping forward. We had been forced by standards before and now each of us are making standards. Photography makes me being as myself. even though i don’t shoot anymore, still I’m professional fashion photographer and no one is doubting it now. it is same to women (and also men). Confidence about herself (and himself) makes her (him) shining, shimmering and splendid. For getting it, trying on each other’s field and being positive about myself can make person beautiful i think. What type of models do you prefer to shoot with? Why? Definitely smart models. I respect each model’s own mood and way of posing. As photographer i try to give them more freedom, not to be tightened by poses in reference. when they suggest me better or different way with posing in front of camera, I’m pleased with it. Even if that is not the one i prefer, i follow. But sometimes if that suggestion is not really great, i give model directions and start again. All those things between photographer and model make what we call ‘conversation’. Usually smarter models are better in this conversation job. I love this session and that is why i prefer smart models. Model of this photoshoot is my muse. She is the smartest model i’ve met ever. This photoshoot is based on the inspiration from Korean poem ‘The Flower’ of Chunsu Kim. To make model understand abstract meaning of this poem, i needed very smart model and there wasn’t any hesitation for choosing her as model.
Are there any other photographers you lookup? Who? So many photographers are giving me inspirations but Paolo Roversi, Nick Knight and Tim Walker these 3 photographers are always the best to me. They are like lighthouse which shows me the way to the wonderland. You are going about conducting a photoshoot, could you take us through the typical planning process for your images? Mostly it starts from catching small idea or inspiration. If they become bigger in my mind and when i can explain or write something about them, i ask model, makeup artist, stylist and other members. The most important matter of my process is preparing mostly with text, not photo or even drawing. I want to keep our imaginations in our mind until right before photoshoot. With this reason, i don’t force my ideas on other members. Exchanging each other’s imaginations is much helpful and we can make our imaginations bigger. In addition to being sharp and well lit, your photos are beautifully edited. What is your retouching/production philosophy? We all know retouching process is the last step of photography. retouching can change everything and sometimes there are some photos which need lots of retouching with technical reasons. I respect all those things but personally only small retouchings i do. To me retouching is elaborating small details. Almost everything ends at the moment i press the shutter. What would be your tips/advice to models looking to expand their portfolio? Basically contacting as many good photographers as possible is the best but better not sending like spam messages. Don’t be afraid of contacting them and show how much you want opportunity to shoot with them. Professional photographers get lots of askings for testshoot from individual models, model agencies and even from amateurs. but we photographers always love having a shoot with passionate models. if model shows strong passion and even has some stunning idea for photoshoot, there wouldn’t be any photographer who doesn’t like that model.
What projects are you working on next, and what are your goals for the future? I’m planning beauty shoot project, fashion editorial shoot based on poem and abstract fashion editorial shoot project. Especially beauty shoot will be a single project which needs lots of models so currently i’m searching for good models. Working with more good people, joining greater project, having a bigger studio, more income as professional photographer and so many other goals i want to achieve. But if i choose one goal for the future then it’s quiet simple. Being a better photographer. Where can we see more of your works and get connected with you? My Instagram (Instagram.com/songchoi.photographer) or website (songchoiphotography.com). Instagram is better for connecting promptly and watching very recent works. Website is better for watching simply.

Custom-made clothes A COMEBACK THAT WE’RE ALL LOVING TO SEE
As we watched it happen, we noticed that this big turn in the liking and demand for readymade clothes have not come on its own. This big shift can principally be attributed to the major modifications in business plans made by readymade brands, which then rightly appealed to customers. This included increasing the variety of designs, reducing the prices, and quickening the processes involved in the apparel manufacturing process. To bring this change, the raw materials were sourced from nearby locations, and the clothes were stitched in a mass-producing factory unit that we now know as fast-fashion. As the readymade clothing industry surged, the customisation clothing industry went downhill when a majo-

Traditionally, people started wearing customised clothing as the availability and accessibility of readymade brands were limited, since readymade clothes were considered fancy and desireble because of their high price and less usage. However, as times changed, readymade clothes became more and more popular among people because they became cheap and easily available – the exact opposite of what it was before. With the readymade clothing business gaining this much popularity and utilising the economies of scale, demand started shifting towards it.
rity of people who used to buy custom-made fits started finding customisation of clothes excessively time-consuming and expensive in the wake of the newly available readymade apparel. This extensive shift in demand resulted in the industry phasing out of the market little by little with time till tailor-made garments became a thing of luxury, meant only for small, concentrated sections of the society. It didn’t take long till bespoke were considered something that only the rich could afford, which made it a lot less popular and available. However, recent times have witnessed a considerable comeback for the customised clothing industry. The prices of readymade clothing, especially designer items have surged drastically over the decade, but the demand and needs of the public have remained constant. Thus, in today’s day as we live in the age of fashionistas, an increasing number of people are looking to get their hands on their desirable designs and fits at economic prices. Ironically, these people are now turning towards customised clothes. Another thing to take into consideration is that with technology and digitisation at an all-time high, bespoke clothing has also made its mark on the internet as the number of online options for tailor-made clothes have become higher. Digital marketing and quick delivery services too have added to the growth. Lastly, the immersive technologies that are fast infesting the world are too playing a crucial role in this great comeback. Now people can ‘try on’ tailor-made clothing before even placing the order by using 3D customisation apps and websites that are prevalent these days. The trial option not only assists the customers but also provides insights to the maker of the clothes who can then do a better job of making clothes suiting needs of the customer. The fact that all these processes are conducted online makes them completely contact-free which is just the cherry on the top of the consumer’s cake.
The clothing and fashion landscape has been changing constantly over the last few decades – and we’re not at all mad about it. The industry has gone from being customised clothes centred to readymade fittings taking their stead to bespoke clothing gradually making its way back to the throne - and hopefully sticking to it as it gives us the possibility of making our clothes look a lot more like ourselves, and not just one more person on the crowd, which is exactly what the new generation of the fashion pack is looking for these days. The trends and customer preferences that have dominated the fashion arena have kept on altering every now and then and are principally responsible for the several dynamic shifts that are constantly happening in the industry. Basis the current trends, the industry is now escalating fast in the direction of bespoke clothing and is expected to continue in that direction for the foreseeable future. As far as we can see and predict, it’s not hard to say that custom fit clothing is now the future of fashion.

Racism goes against everything we believe here in MALVIE Whether it comes in big gestures, like bullying and name-calling, or disguised as “jokes”, racism is violent. As we live in a world where people are being discriminated and even murdered for their skin color and genetic features, it is our mission to try to make life a little less scary.
You are not alone! You deserve to be respected and appreciated for who you are, and nobody has the right or the power to say otherwise. We know we cannot change everything on our own, but we are doing our best to help in any way possible and to show our support in the making of a society in which everyone is safe, respected and gets every opportunity they deserve.
We know it will take time for us to make big changes with worldwide impacts, but we can try and start somewhere. Interview with Saint Perry Could you tell us who you are and how did you get involved with fashion? I am Saint Perry , founder and creative director of SAINT PERRY. I was born with the passion for fashion started at a very young age. While growing up I would express myself through my clothes, accessories, and style. I often joke that I was born with the fashion gene. A trip to visit my Uncle, who is a fashion designer, exposed me deeper to the world of fashion. I worked with him to learn techniques and methods of making a high end, quality garment. I was highly influenced by my environment. If music was playing, I was dancing; if I saw art, I drew it; if my favorite designer dropped a collection, I designed my own version. SAINT PERRY is a piece treasure, a symbol of your style. Inspired by fashion lovers, crafted for the modern-day minimalist, each collection has a modern take on timeless basics. Precise stitching and premium fabrics make every detail count. SAINT PERRY is the epitome of artistic expression that can be found in modern fashion. How is working in fashion different than from when you started? The fashion industry has changed significantly since I started my career. Today's consumers are smarter, savvier and more informed than ever before. They have a wider variety of shopping options, from luxury to fast fashion. As a result, the rules of the game are constantly changing for designers, retailers and brands. Growing with the business has meant learning how to manage people on a much larger scale than I ever imagined when I started out. We were so small that we could pick up the phone and talk directly to anyone in the company and now it's about delegating and trusting in other people's abilities. What do you want to achieve through fashion? I hope to make a difference in people’s life
by advocating individuality and empowerment. In this new digital age, fashion is a media that can create a positive impact on society. Fashion is a powerful tool for self-expression. Are there particular issues within the fashion industry that concern you? If you could change anything about the industry, what would that be? I believe the fashion industry is rife with questionable labor practices and environmental damage. There are several projects that I have come across that are trying to make a difference in this regard, but it is difficult to make a difference as a single entity. The key is to work together. I think it's important for consumers to become more educated about where their clothing is coming from and how it was made. I would love to see more companies take responsibility for their production, more transparency and more people recycling their old clothes and donating them to charity. Fashion needs to become more sustainable. In your daily routine, what resources do you like to learn new things about art, fashion? I tend to research designers (new and old). I watch documentaries, read and utilize social media. What's the most important thing you want your potential client to know about you? Our experience, skill, and craftsmanship will be evident from the moment you feel SAINT PERRY. I like to work collectively with my clients, while considering their tastes, preferences, and inspiration to develop a look that is both visually strong and consistent with their message. When creating I try to connect with ethnicity, culture, and lifestyle as a tool to connect with the innermost desire, at SAINT PERRY we create BOLD so you can express LOVE.
If you could say one thing to someone younger who looks up to you, what would you say? Be fearless, take chances not everyone can understand the artist, express-yourself through creativity to be understood. Listen to your gut and take risks. Embrace every opportunity that comes your way, because it's the experiences that shape us into who we are. What’s been the biggest highlight in your career so far? Creating and designing collectable piece that everyone loves. It's a very cool feeling to know that your hard work, creativity, and ideas have helped to build something of value, and make other happy. Tell me about a time you receive criticism regarding your work? I am always open to criticism, because it gives me a better understanding of how I can improve my work. There are times
when I receive feedback that is constructive, and others that are more personal. it’s important to make every single client happy every single time. What do you love most about what you are doing now? My mom always says the old expression "do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life." I couldn't agree more. What keeps me going is creative experience for people to help with selflove. What does life look like for you now and where do you see yourself in the future? It has been very rewarding I'm called to create. I have a vision and a purpose that is larger than myself. My future includes creative collaborations with my team, designing great clothes that make everyone feel beautiful and well-dressed, as well as helping to develop the next generation of fashion designers."

MIZZ MAJESTY
Interview with Kimberly Kirk
Happy to have you here, Kimberly. Tell us your story, how did you get started modeling and where is your home at the moment? My name is Kimberly Clara Alexa Kirk. I’m 23 years old - turning 24 January 24th. Since the ripe age of 5 years old, i have had an eye for fashion. Whether it be wearing my mother’s Victoria’s Secret bra on my head, or lying on my stomach in a mall, admiring a woman’s Louis Vuitton’s. Fashion was always my focus of attention. Being the eyes immediate focal point when entering a room, was simply a mission. Beauty and glamor never failed to captivate me. My first professional shoot was with Mr. Haidar Salman himself in October, 2021. I was intrigued by modelling after seeing my close friend, Andrea Sokolowski, shoot at Tell us more about yourself. What else Mr. Studios. I had always craved the do you do next to modeling? lens of a camera since seeing Andrea I am a rather busy woman. I like to fill my conquer her spotlight. I simply wish time doing activities that will benefit me i had conquered mine sooner. I am and my future. I work full time in sales sellcurrently living in Edmonton, Alberta. ing medical equipment. I part time serve/ I come from a small town - though bartend. My two older sisters and i have I’ve always had a soft spot for big citalso started a business for event planning ies Big cities = big opportunities. July 2021. I love quality time with friends and family. The outdoors is my best friend, What do you love most about being I’m always up for an adventure. a model? And, what do you least enjoy? If you could change something in the Easy. The one thing i absolutely modeling world, what would it be? adore about being a model, is the I personally feel as if the modelling world fact that you can be exactly who you is always changing. Not particularly at a are, and at the same time, be somefast pace, just…changing. Changing to one you have never been - or perhaps what the consumers desire. Changing to never met…yet. When i had my first what the consumers can relate to. For shoot, it seemed as if i unleashed example: Plus size models, models with this confident, sexy girl, who had so disabilities etc. are being used more often much expression that she didn’t even than they have ever been. It took a while, know she had, to show the camera but none the less, it’s amazing. So, as far to show the world. Don’t even get me as changing the modelling world…I think started on seeing the end results of we are (slowly) on the right track. Breaka shoot. It’s a whole new confidence ing the “norm” , bending “rules”. Making level completely unlocked. Who is each and every woman’s (mans/they/ that woman? Oh, wait. That’s me! them) feel beautiful and sexy the way they And I do not plan on loosing that girl are. With a little spice, of course. anytime soon.
What fuels your imagination and provides you with inspiration? New. Things. Different. Perspective. It’s simple. You do not grow in your comfort zone (i hope we all know that by now.) What may have worked once, twice, three times…will not forever (or at least hold the same interest/attention/etc) In life, you never stop learning and growing. it’s the same in the fashion industry. it doesn’t just…stop. It keeps levelling that thirst, that hunger, for something new. Something more endearing then the last. Changing the narrative, challenging the perspective, will allow that growth. I personally love to try new things. Food, activities, hair styles. You name it. Change of perspective is key. Getting out of your element, is the answer. Share your wildest photo-shoot/modeling story. The wildest thing i have ever done for a shoot was with Mr. H (of course). We spoke about his idea to incorporate glitter into our shoot, and of course I naturally was all in! So, at the end of our shoot, he had this wild idea to add glitter to my tongue! It was very fun and creative, I don’t think I have drooled so much in my life. Absolutely worth it! The results were out of this world! I think I occasionally spit out glitter when I brush my teeth to this day. You have a beautiful portfolio and you have worked on so many projects as a model. Which of the projects you have worked on left the biggest footprint in your modeling experience so far? Mr. H Studios has to be my definite footprint into the modelling world. I am new to the modelling world. I naturally had some struggles and insecurities at first. But that being said, having the honor of working alongside of Mr. H on the Mizz Majesty shoot allowed me to gracefully break down those barriers, and let my inner 5 year old, fashionista, Kimmy, to take over. This allowed me to release
the confident woman held back by ego - to be seen for who and what I am. Unique art. Looking back how has modeling experience changed your personal/professional life? Have you grown more comfortable with yourself since you have started? Yes. Absolutely. Definitely, yes. I have found myself buying clothing styles i never would have dreamed of buying before. Trying bolder makeup - no matter the occasion. Wearing heels more often because i feel that much more confident when i have that certain stride in my step. Following pages that may not flow with others - but spoke to me. I smile, wink and pout in conversation as if a camera were in view. I carry myself differently. Confidently. And i enjoy and take pride of every second of it. Is there an artist you are fascinated about or you would like to work with in the future? I am interested in any artist that wish to break their own boundaries. To expand their creativities. I am open. I would wish to experience art with someone whom is also experimenting with whatever their vision may be for the first time. I’m just happy to be a part of that break in growth. What has been the highlight of your career so far and what are your hopes/ dreams for the future? The highlight of my career has been two things. Firstly, coworkers/family/ friends being so eager to see the final product of my photoshoots. Hearing them say “you’re meant for something bigger”, “you look so fierce, how did you make that face?”, “I admire your confidence”. On that note, secondly would be that confidence

Minsuk Kim EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH
To begin, can you please give us a little intro as to what motivated you to become a photographer? For me, who is not good at drawing, the camera was the only tool that could create any image I wanted. I think it made me fall in love with pictures. Minsuk, how would you describe your photography style? I can't define my photo style yet. I still like photographs of various genres and styles. However, recently, we are trying to create an image in a direction that combines fashion and art. What do you hope people take away from viewing your images? I would be very grateful if many people who look at my pictures sympathize with every little thing in the image I create and get some inspiration. Minsuk, how would you define "beauty"? What does it mean to you? To be honest, I've never seriously thought about it. I think the standards and meanings of beauty will be too different for each person. It's hard to explain in words, but I'm creating something based on some beauty that only I can feel in my heart. What is your retouching philosophy? And what do you think it delivers in the final image? I don't prefer retouching as much as possible. I want to look natural without overdoing it. I think it will be a comfortable and friendly picture for others to see. Do you have any practical advice to give the photographers who are trying to master retouching for their own photography? I don't know how my advice will help because I'm not a successful role model in this field, but in my case, I practiced a lot to make it similar to the person who uses retouching I want to learn. I think it's a good way to practice alone because it's an era where you can get more information than you think through the Internet. And I think it would be good to take pictures and interact with people who exchange information.
What fascinates and motivates you most being a photographer? The fact that I can actually create the image I imagine makes me excited every time. What type of projects are dearest to your heart? Why? I like projects that have some meaning in their images. This is because you can collaborate with artists in various fields other than photography. The feeling of creating an image together is so fantastic that it is hard to explain in words. What is typically in your camera bag and what is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera? Of course, my camera bag contains cameras and lenses, and other accessories that I often use and cherish will be filters. These days, I like Pro-Mist filters that create a cinematic feeling. What projects are you working on next, and what are your goals for the future? I am planning a project that can solve the same topic with various images. It is preparing to harmonize artistic objects and fashion. It's going to be a very long-term project and I'm looking forward to getting something out of it. If this project goes well, I would like to hold an exhibition or publish a book at the end. Where can we see more of your works and get connected with you? I upload the most images on my Instagram and that account would be the best way to communicate with me. instagram.com/kimkkam_

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH To begin, can you please give us a little intro as to what motivated you to become a photographer? Love for a beautiful and unusual picture prompted me to become a photographer. What are the most important lessons you have learned about fashion photography so far? Photography must be conspicuous, desirable this is the most important lesson in fashion photography. What would you say is your style of photography? My photography style is a cocktail of fashion, art, cosplay, performance, creativity. How long does it take to create one of these wonderful works? Many images for photos have been stored and reincarnated for centuries, it is enough for me to look at a person and see the way I want to see him. How do you manage to make your models feel comfortable in front of the camera? I always shoot from both sides of the lens and have modeling experience, so the models are always comfortable with me. From your point of view, what are the most difficult aspects of professional fashion photography? If you know what you want to shoot, it shouldn't be difficult. Of course fashion is a separate type of art with its own laws, but if you see a picture, there is nothing complicated. Are there any other photographers you lookup? Who? I am a photo party organizer. There are many photographers, but I prefer to do my own work myself. In addition to being sharp and well lit, your photos are beautifully edited. What is your retouching/production philosophy? The philosophy of retouching is simple, shoot
Iana Chkhan so that there is less retouching. But there should be retouching. If you couldn't be a photographer, what would be your other career choice? There is no other choice. If you could say one thing to someone younger who looks up to you, what would you say? Find your true self, be different, be a risk taker, be unique. Don't let the people’s words and society keep you from being yourself and finding your goals What's the most important thing you want potential clients to know about you? I want each of my clients to feel that this dress was made for her. How hard has it been establishing yourself in the industry and what are some of the largest things you've faced? The world of fashion is not as easy and light as many people think. There are so many challenges faced by people who are in the fashion world. I too, as a human being, have experienced some difficulties. The hardest thing I've ever faced was where I ran out of ideas, while the world I entered was a world that requires you to have endless creative ideas. but despite some obstacles, I stick to my long term goal. because if in achieving goals we only see short-term goals, then the difficulties that occur will be more visible. by Fashion & Beauty | January 2022

Exclusive Interview with Frank Gutierrez Frank, could you please briefly introduce yourself, and tell us about your first encounter with photography? Who are some of your biggest influences in photography? My name is Frank Gutierrez, a Brooklyn-based visionary artist and professional photographer. As the son of a renowned Southern CA Chicano artist, I was surrounded by a plethora of art mediums, film photography being one of them. I loved the smell of a fresh roll of film being fed into the camera, finding excitement in the sounds of advancing film and shutters whirring about with each press of the button! When it comes to photography, some of my biggest influences have been the likes of Irving Penn, Annie Leibovitz, and Joel Grimes to name a few. From your point of view, what are the most difficult aspects of professional fashion photography? For me, it is commitment to the vision as a whole. In order for a visionary to be successful, such a person must possess the ability to pull together a team that not only works cohesively, but a team that fully grasps and brings to life the vision. If your team doesn’t live and breathe the vision, there’s no buy-in which in turn equates to lack of commitment to produce the best within each person’s established position; from a model that is unable to authentically emote, to an ensemble of artists incapable of presenting the vision holistically. As the expert you are, what are the unique features of this kind of photography and the keys to master it? When it comes to fashion photography, it is imperative the photographer connects with the model, and ensures proper lighting is in place. Firstly, the photographer and model must be able to connect with one another, truly engage in conversation, discussing and listening to one another on how best to achieve the
overarching vision of the photoshoot; and yes, it’s okay for a model to have a voice! I encourage this with models in every one of my shoots, and have found far better results than when I used to just dictate what the model was to do. I liken this to the conversations directors have with actors before filming a scene. When it comes to proper lighting, the photographer must make every effort to be a student and master at the same time. As a student, the photographer always stays on top of the latest in technique, while perfecting the processes; and as a master, the photographer ensures that the best in lighting is in place with every press of the button. You can have a stunning model, made up and styled to perfection, but if you don’t have proper lighting in place, it's all a waste. In your opinion, how is beauty perceived at the present age? What does photography mean to you personally and what really makes a woman or man beautiful? Distressingly, I feel that the perception of beauty throughout society is still very much, “skin deep.” Albeit, we seem to be heading in the right direction of circumventing this notion with the likes of giving a stage to truly beautiful personalities like Canadian fashion model, Winnie Harlow, and American singer and rapper, Lizzo. Photography is an expression of ideas, a collection of thoughts that permeate the creative mind. With such a powerful platform, we have a responsibility to push the boundaries, asking the hard questions through imagery that will not only create conversations between our critics and admirers, but bring about a collective appreciation of the art as a whole. To me personally, what really makes a human beautiful is what’s on the inside. It may sound cliche, but it’s #TRUTH. If I can get them to emote that during a photoshoot, I’ve succeeded as a fashion photographer! What type of models do you prefer to shoot with? Why? I love working with models, new or seasoned, that connect with and understand
the potential of the photoshoot. Like me, they’re students and masters of their craft; it goes far beyond having a pretty face, beyond a chiseled body. If I can’t get you to channel the purpose or the feeling that we're trying to create, then I cannot work with you. Are there any other photographers you look up to? Who? As for contemporaries, I love the work of Lindsay Adler and Eli Infante. You are going about conducting a photoshoot, could you take us through the typical planning process for your images? First and foremost, I’ll jot down all the notes and ideas I have for the story this shoot is going to tell. From there I’ll look for inspiration through various mediums; I'll look through resources like art books, fashion magazines, Pinterest and Instagram. Once I have a pretty good idea of what I’m looking to create, I’ll post an online modeling casting advertisement, or I may reach out to models I’ve worked with in the past that have the ability to connect with my visions. I’ve also developed a strong network of creatives who I enjoy collaborating with to help flesh out the ideas; for example, Anne Mack of Mirabelle House Millinery and Sam Lavey of Doien. Lastly, a very important step for me is to hop on Zoom calls with each team member, individually or collectively (if schedules permit), to discuss the photoshoot as a whole; even though things have changed with the pandemic, personal connections are still such an integral part of the process. To me, everyone’s input is important and equally weighted when it comes to making final decisions about the shoot. In addition to being sharp and well lit, your photos are beautifully edited. What is your retouching/production philosophy? I’m classically trained in Photoshop, so I hardly ever use anything else when it comes to retouching images. I try to keep it to a minimum, as I believe that when it
comes to fashion photography, it’s very important for the imagery to be true to form. As the old adage states, “less is more.” What would be your tips/advice to models looking to expand their portfolio? Have an open mind and be willing to implement that which is learned from constructive criticism. Be selective in what you post in your online portfolio (NO selfies; a sure fire way to be passed over by casting agents every time!). And when it comes to working with photographers, connect with those that can understand and deliver what you are looking to capture. What projects are you working on next, and what are your goals for the future? Rounding out 2021 and heading into the new year, I’m planning a contemporary Hollywood starlet beauty editorial series spanning the next few months, and a very chic sci-fi fashion editorial with stylist and fashion designer Sam Lavey of Doien. As for 2022, I’m looking forward to focusing on more story-driven fashion editorials while also finishing up the certification process and earning my credentials through Professional Photographers of America (PPA), Additionally, I am working on developing a robust curriculum for local photographers who are wanting to, not only fine tune their studio photography skills, but really push their creative boundaries to realize their ability to become true visionaries in the process. Where can we see more of your works and get connected with you? You can find my most current work on Instagram (@visualartistrynyc), and my online portfolio is at frankgutierrez.nyc. Exclusive Interview with Katerina Larniani Katerina, could you please briefly introduce yourself, and tell us about your first encounter with photography? Who has influenced you to start taking photographs? My first acquaintance with photography was around 2008. There was a photography club near my school. I was given an old film camera with a brief explanation and I took pictures of everything that I thought was interesting and beautiful, and then I showed it in the dark room. It fascinated me incredibly. What is one last impression you want to leave in your photographs? I like to idealize the world around me through photography. I love not only photographing beautiful women, but also watching them, so I want the female beauty in my photo to be presented at the best moment in its best perspective. You've clearly worked with a wide range of models, what tips can you recommend to models looking to expand their portfolio? Advice to models - do not waste time on photographers and projects that do not represent a model of something really interesting and worthwhile. It seems to me not a problem to have a larger portfolio today. It's important to have a quality portfolio that works on you. Therefore, to work not only on commerce, but also on creativity. A small, high-quality portfolio works better for you than a large, unsuccessful one. What are the most important lessons you have learned about photography so far? The most important lesson for me is that good organization and a team are important in photography. If everyone works on the same wavelength and everyone is interested in what we are doing, everything turns out great. As soon as the team gets some kind of negative - everything goes across. So in order for the photos to turn out right, you need a good and positive team and organization.
How long does a shoot day typically last and what is the preparation like? Preparation always takes more than the process itself. After all, it is not so easy to come to an agreement with everyone and it takes more than one day. I don't like too spontaneous photos. The model must first of all be properly made up and dressed. There is no specific time for makeup and hairstyle, it depends on many details and appearance of the model. In the same way, there is no specific time for outdoor shooting. After all, everything depends on the light and sometimes you need to wait and sometimes in a hurry. But I can tell you for sure that you can't do anything in a couple of hours. I usually devote my entire day to one shoot. It is very important for me to be prepared mentally and physically as well. Of course, there are also large commercial projects that can take more than one day of filming, but this is less common. Are you the sort of photographer who plans for every minuscule detail or are you more spontaneous with your creations? Where do you find the majority of your inspiration? Everything before shooting is discussed earlier. But nothing can ever be planned one hundred percent. The weather, the human factor - this cannot be thought through to the smallest detail. So I don't even bother with some. For example, there are photographers who in advance come up with poses for models without ever seeing this model in life. Well, how can you put a person in a pose for whom it may not be natural at all? I noticed the more you force the model to stand in your conceived position, the funnier she gets. So, on posing, I like to work in the process of shooting, communicating with the person. There is always an exemplary moodboard, from which you start, but the result is something new, which I could not
imagine. The same is with the location, you never know what awaits you on the day of shooting. After all, you plan everything earlier. And if there is no sun and fog comes out? The only thing I love is that the makeup and clothes were thought out perfectly, and everything else requires the flexibility of the photographer and the team. Inspiration comes to me from everywhere. From books, films, travels of new experienced emotions. You bring a very high production value to your work. What is your retouching/production philosophy? How important is Photoshop in your final images? I love photoshop. I believe that this is an integral part of modern fashion photography. I'm not saying that you need to replace the model's nose or eyes, but there are times that need to be tweaked, not to mention light correction. There are no longer those photographs as they once were on film. And why are they? People have always loved to idealize both in art and in photography. Even when there were no cameras yet. Few people know that filters, for example, which we are used to seeing in Instagram, were invented many years before the creation of the first camera. Claude glass (or black mirror) - considered the first filter which was made in the 16th century. Any modern camera already includes software that processes the photo in the process of clicking. So there is no question of naturalness in today's photography. If the light is well set and the model is painted correctly, minimal post-processing is often required. Now it is fashionable to see the flaws of the model. But if you take a closer look at these models, they are already perfect in themselves. They are carefully selected to show their wrinkles or "imperfections" In your opinion, what is the difference between fashion and beauty photography? What's your favorite? Fashion and Beauty are two directions that go side by side. The difference is in light, equipment, technique of execution and re-
touching. I do not have a favorite direction in photography, there are beautifully made works that please the eye or evoke emotions in me. In addition to fashion photography, I also love documentaries, landscapes and street photography. In your own eyes, what was the moment that your career took off? When I was offered the first collaboration in a fashionable St. Petersburg magazine. Russia introduced me to many interesting people in the fashion industry. After that, my fame increased. I also worked hard and hard on my portfolio, which allowed me to reach the European magazines that I still work with. Outside of photography, what else blows your mind? Aside from photography, I like to travel. Meet new people. Acquainted with new cultures and traditions. Since the last two years I have been traveling less I like to explore the city in which I live. In Milan, numerous exhibitions and events related to culture inspire me and push me to new achievements. I spend most of my free time with my son who amazes and inspires me with his childhood fantasy. Unfortunately, when we become adults, part of our childish world disappears. But it was thanks to fantasies that the best books and paintings were written. And all art is created thanks to the fantasies and skills of people to translate them into reality. Where can we see more of your works and get connected with you? I often do posts or stories of the work process on social networks. Recently, I have also begun to fascinate with videos. During this year I hope to find a suitable space for my personal studio in Milan. You can see my work on my website katerinalarniani.it and Instagram @katerinalarniani_ph
