THE JAZZ CAFE

The days are getting longer & the sun is slowly getting his hat on... ...welcome to 2015 & the 25th birthday of The Jazz Cafe! We had so much fun with Average White Band, The Brand New Heavies & our epic NYE show that we can’t believe 2014 is over. Saying that, January has hardly been a month to turn your nose up at. Roy Ayers stopped by and made our jaws drop for three consecutive nights, Akua Naru demolished her hotly anticipated London debut. Gazing deeply into our crystal ball it’s clear that the next couple of months are going to be hard to beat. Homegrown, award winning saxophonist YolanDa Brown & everyone’s big brother Alexander O’Neal both return to The Jazz Cafe this February. Pharoahe Monch will defy the limits rhythm & rhyme & the godfather of the DJ, Grandmaster Flash, will return to celebrate our silver jubilee. Keep reading to find out who else we have in store for you & if you read hard enough you might even find a special word or two from some of the talents we have coming to help kick winter back down where it belongs! 04

INTERVIEW:
YOLANDA BROWN
You’re set to debut your brand new concept show ‘Reggae Love Songs’ at The Jazz Cafe this February. Could you tell us a bit more about this night? The evening will focus on a selection of songs arranged in a reggae jazz style. Over the last year, all the reggae tracks that I’ve performed have received a phenomenal response so as a result this night will explore the genre even further. I’m really looking forward to this performance as it will be packed with lively soulful and feel good music!
Crowned as the MOBO ‘Best Jazz’ artist in 2008 & 2009 and the UMA ‘Best Jazz’ artist in 2009, it’s evident that you were cut out for a career in music. Has it been easy to adapt to the level of success you have achieved so far?
Thank you! I am exceptionally grateful for all of the acknowledgments and awards that I have received so far and it’s very heartwarming to be recognised for my music. In such a tough industry, I find it extremely important that I stay true to myself and consequently I feel that I have not had to adapt but rather enjoy my work and continue to experiment with music and sound. Overall it’s wonderful that I have an audience out there that want to listen!
You’ve worked alongside musicians such as Michel Camilo, Sonny Bradshaw and Dean Fraser. What’s the best advice that they have given you? I find that the best advice that seems to come from all the fantastic musicians that I have worked with is to enjoy what you do. It sounds rather simple however when a career is born out of a hobby as it was in my case,

it can be easy to forget that it’s not just work but also play! The centre of all music is soul, so it’s vital to have a happy soul when creating and performing!
What genre do you prefer to play when performing? I love to mix genres, especially with Jazz based songs however my favourite genres would be reggae and soul. I love the rhythms and the feelings that come from listening and playing these particular genres and what’s more the audience always seems to respond well too!
Are you working on new material at the moment? I’m currently writing and recording my next album at the moment. It’s a great process and slightly more relaxing than the making of my debut album as there were so many different ideas that I wanted to bring through. This album however feels more focused and I’ll also have the opportunity to test it on tour.
Where would you like to see yourself in the five years? Musically, I am always growing so to see growth in my music is always rewarding. My dream has always been to make YolanDa Brown a household name alongside continuing to tour worldwide and collaborate with amazing artists. • Don’t miss YOLANDA BROWN - REGGAE LOVE SONGS live at The Jazz Cafe SATURDAY 7TH FEBRUARY Tickets £20 advance 10
