“If you want things to move better, withstand the tides of the bad weather, the struggle thrives when we all gather down at the bank of the soul river.” Apparently Nothing – The Brand New Heavies feat. Carleen Anderson, 1999 Getting caught in a torrential rainstorm whilst wearing shorts & drinking beer in a park, the defining factors of any good British summer. Don’t worry if you haven’t had a chance to do this yet, the ‘sunny’ season has only just started!

We have plenty more tasty musical morsels coming up. In June we’ll see UK jazz extraordinaire Courtney Pine, New York City ‘brasshouse’ trio Too Many Zooz & our cover star; English soul singer Myles Sanko.

Trying to fit all of the truly phenomenal performances we have hosted over the past couple months into an editorial for an A6 brochure is a tall order. Some of our highlights have to be the biggest and best London International Ska Festival yet, two breathtaking performances from neosoul’s newest sensation Jarrod Lawson, the effortlessly powerful stage presence of UK wordsmith Akala and, of course, watching KRS-One dominate the stage!

Whilst in July we’re delighted and excited to be hosting shows with psychedelic funk master Larry Graham & Graham Central Station, west coast hip hop sensation Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde and jazz-funk legends Beggar & Co.

QUICKFIRE: INNER CIRCLE

What have you guys been up to recently? It’s been a while since we last saw you in the UK? Making music where the fans request us. Living our blessed lives.

Can you tell us your favourite memory from previous visits to the UK?

Getting in the phone booths with about 20 other people (all laugh).

You guys are legends of the scene, who excites you most out of the Reggae artists coming through at the moment?

Forget the artists, English women! “Hahaa” just playing, we like our friends from Birmingham, Steele Pulse.

What can fans expect from your Jazz Cafe show?

Touter starts to sing “Oh no its not Jazz, oh no its not Basanova, its sweet reggae music”. All the fans can expect is, hard hitting reggae music and a kick ass performance by the Bad Boys of reggae.

Don’t miss INNER CIRCLE live at The Jazz Cafe on Wednesday 15th July. Tickets £20 advance.

INTERVIEW:

CARLEEN ANDERSON

Carleen, first off let us thank you for your spellbinding performance at The Jazz cafe in May! You sang a lot of songs that you hadn’t performed for a long time, what spurred that decision? It was a great honour for me to celebrate, through my performance in May 2015, the rites of passage that Camden’s Jazz Cafe continues to be for a variety of artists. My solo tour began with three sold out concerts at Jazz Cafe in 1993, with my Stepfather, Bobby Byrd, as my bandleader. My stepdad was James Brown’s founder and lead musician from their childhood years to their glory days. As Pops ushered in my solo career with his blessing, at the Jazz Cafe, it seemed fitting to sing some of the songs that I sang on my first shows there, in his memory.

As you know it’s our 25th Birthday here at The Jazz Cafe this year, other contemporaries of yours such as Jocelyn Brown are also included in our celebrations. Who would you pick, past or present to play as part of the celebrations? Firstly, you honour me greatly to name me as a contemporary of Jocelyn Brown!! Respectfully I have to clarify that Jocelyn Brown is in a category ALL BY HERSELF!!! I have been blessed to witness her glory but would hardly consider myself her contemporary!! She is of course an exemplary example of the calibre of artists that The Jazz Cafe presents. If I could go back in time, I would love to have been able to see and hear Gil Scott-Heron perform at The Jazz Cafe.

You’ve been involved in music and performing since you were very young, and have gone on to achieve phenomenal success, what do you think has been the key to such a sustained career in such a tough industry? The old adage of opportunity meets preparation to me is key in sustaining a career in this demanding music industry. Depending on what you want to achieve, as success means different things to different people, if you are prepared to be disciplined in the development of your skills, learn to motivate yourself even when it seems you are but a fan club of one, and take absolutely NOTHING FOR GRANTED, by keeping yourself within the frame of creativity so that when chance shines a light, you can step up, this sort of perseverance is what is required to keep rising, regardless.

Finally, what can we expect from you in the coming years? I am currently working on a musical media theatre production, which was awarded a grant from the Arts Council of England, that covers over 100 years of family heritage. It begins with my Grandfather’s USA birth in 1888 to my Son’s current UK life, with government politics, family lineage and the continued music influence that life brings. The fresh music from this theatre production is to be my next album aimed for a 2016 release. In going forward, it is creating music for the theatre world that has me most inspired.

Keep up to date with Carleen at CARLEENANDERSON.NET 16
