INTERVIEW:
ADRIAN GIBSON
Head of Programming, 1992-2008 When you took over the venue, what was your philosophy behind making the venue the iconic mecca it is today? I became the programmer of The Jazz Cafe on Friday 4th September 1992. The venue was opened by Jon Dabner who converted the space from a branch of Barclays Bank into the venue that it is today. Jon Dabner was the programmer and owner of the venue originally when it opened in December 1990 and it programmed purely jazz music through until it went into receivership at the start of 1992. After being run by the receivers for six months with Geoff Wilkinson of Us3 as the programmer, the Mean Fiddler came in and bought the venue. I was working for the Mean Fiddler at the time running a venue called Subterania but moved into The Jazz Cafe office and ran both venues from there. Clearly, the venue had failed as a pure jazz venue. In 1992 the hottest music trend was the acid jazz scene and I decided to make The Jazz Cafe into the venue that would encompass all strands of this scene. As well as booking all of the local Acid Jazz acts - Corduroy, JTQ, Ronny Jordan, Mother Earth etc, I set about booking acts of all other genres that were a part of that scene.
Who was the very first act you booked? The first booking was JTQ who I booked in for a 5 night sold out run. In the first week of bookings I also confirmed Courtney Pine, Baaba Maal, Eddie Harris, Ronnie Laws, Eddie Russ, Jools Holland & Carmen Lundy. 20

...Toots and the Maytals Roni Size & Reprazent Kenny Garrett Sierra Maestra Lee Ritenour...
You invested a lot of time, effort and sheer tenacity in getting certain bands – some of whom had disbanded to reform and perform at the venue. Why was that? Well, aside from any business point of view I am a massive music fan so wanted to see certain bands and artists appear in the venue. I spent ages getting War to reform and play a sold out week in October 1993; the same thing with The Blackbyrds in February 1999. It was the first show the band had played in the UK since 1978 when they appeared with Donald Byrd at the Hammersmith Odeon. James Mason was persuaded to play his sole album in 1996 despite it never having been played live ever. The “Rhythm of Life” album was a studio project only but, as it was one of my favourite albums of all time, I wanted to hear the album in a live setting.
What approach did you take when talent spotting / the A&R process? How did you discover new acts to then book at the venue? There was so much great music around between 1992-2008. There were lots of new acts emerging in all genres on top of the great artists still touring. I promoted debut London gigs from D’Angelo, Maxwell, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, Robin Thicke, Faithless, The Black Eyed Peas, Groove Armada, Morcheeba, The Cinematic Orchestra, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, G Love & Special Sauce, Rahsaan Patterson, The Roots, Roni Size & Reprazent, Ben Harper, Jamiroquai and loads more.
Tell us about the D’Angelo gig and the live recording of his album. The shows were on Wed 13 & Thu 14 Sept 1995. The shows were the official launch of the “Brown Sugar” album. Angie Stone was one of the backing vocalists on the night. Both gigs sold out in advance. Tickets were £8 each…!! Both dates were recorded by the label and the best performances were released in Japan as “D’Angelo live at The Jazz Cafe”.
A list of Adrian’s standout artists & shows at The Jazz Cafe is displayed throughout this brochure on our timeline at the bottom of each page.
That roll call of acts, married with the current wave of emerging artists and those who are steadily earning the title as ‘Future Legends’ are the vital ingredients to what has gone in to making London’s Jazz Cafe what it is. That is its legacy. A London landmark in the heart of a buzzing and vibrant town, local for us Londoners but global is its appeal.

Join us on Thursday 29th October as we officially celebrate 25 years of The Jazz Cafe. After nearly 10 months of celebratory parties and live performances that painted the exact spirit of The Jazz Cafe Camden – the little venue that thinks big – the time has come for the official party to take place on the stage that hosted most of London’s favourite artists. The line up for our anniversary event will guarantee to take the audience on a journey through their favourite songs, performed by some of our favourite artists. Continuing its legacy of showcasing different genres, on October 29th the stage will be taken by storm by acts such as Mica Paris, Linda Lewis, Roachford, Christopher Ellis, Jehst, Heather Peace, and Terri Walker, supported by The Reel Deal Band, that will be the house band for this special event. The party will be hosted by the jaw-droppingly comedy infused funk soul act, The Cuban Brothers, and the after party will find Grandmaster Flash and a very special guest DJ on the ones and twos. ...Junior Wells Carlos Garnett The Specials Tania Maria The Blackbyrds Jimmy Smith Willie Tee... I have seen a lot of my fellow musicians play to, as well as top artists from abroad. My favourite was Mavis Staples who had the whole house jumping.
Behind the scenes the sound crew and all the staff are really kind and helpful. Love, Linda.”

“The Jazz Cafe has always been one of my favourite venues to perform in when I am in London. After I recorded “Expansions”, I came to London to perform and I saw young teenagers dancing to “Expansions”. I have always remembered that as a very beautiful experience.
I first performed at The Jazz Cafe in the late 90s. I always enjoy performing at The Jazz Cafe because the audience that comes to the club is very interested in listening to great music.
I think all of the great creative musicians of the 20th Century have performed at The Jazz Cafe, and I think that is a great track record for the Club.
Another great thing I love about the Club is that you only have to do one show per night and that way you can pour all of your creative energy into that one show and do not have to worry about a second show.
I wish The Jazz Cafe continued success into the future. Expand your mind.”

The Jazz Cafe pretty much has stayed the same over the years, except recently its reincarnation is making it more of an established venue than the ‘new kid on the block’ that it was when I first performed there. My favourite aspect about The Jazz Cafe is how it maintains the global respect of musicians and audiences for the high quality and variety of musical styles it presents. I would LOVE to see Jill Scott sing at The Jazz Cafe again!! Saw here there circa 2000 - SHE WAS AWESOME!!!!”

This was one of my favourite live recordings at the time, but I could scarcely imagine that I too would one day perform inside of these legendary walls. Fast forward to 2015, I’m walking out onto this very stage with my “band of brothers” The Good People, and the audience begins to roar louder and louder as I approach the beautiful 7’ grand piano they have set up for me. We will never forget the electric atmosphere despite the chaos of us barely all fitting on the stage (being an unwieldy 10 piece band as we were at the time). It was an amazing way to begin our live career, with this “Faithless football team” friends, family, superstar DJs, curious journalists & fans crammed into the venue. It was also so great to be honoured with a plaque commemorating that very same gig in pride of place above The Jazz Cafe. PRS FOR MUSIC The Jazz Cafe has been an iconic live music venue in London, a stepping stone for so many British music legends. We are truly honoured to have been able to award the Camden venue with a PRS for Music Heritage Award for being the birthplace of one of the UK’s most successful dance acts, Faithless. To many more years of music creation and celebration at The Jazz Cafe - congratulations on turning 25! All the best for the celebrations.

We have dealt with The Jazz Cafe for many years now and they have always been a pleasure to deal with. Our artists have had amazing shows at the venue and are extremely well looked after by the staff when they perform. Jazz Cafe is one of the leading small live venues in the UK and we would like to wish them a very Happy Birthday… here’s to another 25 years of success!

INTERVIEW:
P.P. ARNOLD Ms. Arnold, your story could easily become a valid definition of a true ‘Soul survivor’: from an Ikette to The First Lady of UK’s Immediate Records, as Soul lovers know you, and beyond. In hindsight, how do you feel about your musical journey? Totally blessed to have survived for 50 years in this industry, most of that time, the last 40 years, as an independent artist surviving as a result of my credibility, the many collaborations that I’ve been able to do, by faith and by grace.
Over the decades, you’ve worked alongside a significant number of spectacular artists. We’re just going to name a few: Ike and Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, Roger Waters, Eric Clapton. How much of an influence did they have on your creative approach to music? They have all had a great influence on my creative approach to music. Tina Turner taught me how to project, be confident as a performer and most importantly, the importance of being a strong woman in an industry controlled by men. My Immediate Records legacy with Mick Jagger, Andrew Oldham and my work with Steve Marriott taught me to believe in myself as an artist. Their help and vision for me opened me up to my own musicality, style and sound that gave me a very unique musical direction. I am still being influenced by Roger Waters’ creativity, professionalism, ingenuity, musicality, and amazing live stage production. I hope that I will get the chance to be able to stage shows of mine on that level of excellence with great sound and great theatrics. Of course, Tina, The Stones, Eric Clapton and Roger Waters all have the money that their kind of success brings to be able to do things on that level. Working with Barry Gibb inspired me greatly as well. Unreleased productions of the work that I did with Barry Gibb and Eric Clapton are in the pipeline for release. Most recently, my independent production work that I’ve done with Chaz Jankel has also not been released as yet. That work truly opened me up to being able to express my own creative ideas. It is available on my web site www.pparnold.com but it definitely needs a wider distribution. I have to sort that out. I have another independent project with Dr Robert (Blow Monkeys) that we recorded in Spain, called; “5 In The Afternoon” that was released with brilliant reviews and feedback, but the record label who released it went bust and it didn’t get the recognition that it deserved. We’re looking for the right distribution for it now. 38

You’ve graced the stage of The Jazz Cafe with your presence before. How does it feel to be back, especially in this celebratory month, that marks its 25th anniversary? This will be my fourth time performing at The Jazz Cafe. Every time I’ve played, I’ve always played to a full house and rocked it every time with brilliant musicians like Tony Remy and Chaz Jankel and I’m really looking forward to this special Anniversary gig that the great Ray Russell is musical directing for me. I’ll be performing a pretty crossover set performing tunes from my ‘First Lady of Immediate’ and ‘Kaunta Albums’ with a few Soul classics and tributes to Tina Turner and The Small Faces who have both been strong influences on my musical direction.
What legends would you have loved to see perform at The Jazz Cafe? Who do you think would have encapsulated the spirit of the venue? I love Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Etta James, Minnie Riperton, Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, Mavis Staples, Patrice Rushen, Brenda Holloway, Candi Staton, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke. It would be a joy to have seen these artists anywhere. I think that they would all encapsulate the spirit of The Jazz Cafe!
