and please accept our utmost thanks in regards of your patience while our doors were temporarily closed across January.

The Jazz Cafe brochure is a bi-monthly publication brought to you from the team behind the venue. The venue has been delivering the best in hip hop, soul, R&B, disco, funk, dance, world and everything in between since 1990.

With our doors re-opened we also bring you a selection of new club nights in the form of Streetclash and Trevor Nelson Presents which kicks off with a launch party for his 2nd compilation CD on the 7th February. We continue to pay homage to the greats whether dead or alive and this time around some of the UK’s finest vocalists will clamour to perform the soul of Marvin Gaye on Valentine’s Day and Chyna and guests will salute Aretha Franklin on her birthday.

Acts such as Faithless, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Courtney Pine, Luciano, Shuggie Otis, Angie Stone, De La Soul, Lana Del Rey, Rita Ora, George Clinton, Bobby Womack, KRS-One, Solomon Burke have all graced the stage at this landmark venue.

We continue to uphold our name in inviting back Get The Blessing and one of this generation’s pioneers of jazz Courtney Pine. A standout show that spans various genres and helped kick-start Hip Hop is Hustlers Convention, which will be performed on stage for the first time live right here by Lightnin’ Rod himself. We have to get out the good china for returning legends Grandmaster Flash, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Heaven 17 and Toyah Willcox in recognition of the history they have already made.

HOUSE OF LEGENDS:

COURTNEY PINE

Appearances at Glastonbury, Latitude, Notting Hill Carnival and the International Ska Festival have helped establish the band as one of the UK’s most exciting up and coming acts. Listening to their debut album ‘All Aboard’ is all the incentive you will need to want to be near a stage with the voice of Janet Kumah belting out from it.

There is no musician that embodies transformation within the British jazz scene over the past twenty plus years more than Courtney Pine CBE. Currently touring his critically acclaimed 15th LP ‘House of Legends’. This set sees the ground breaking, multi- instrumentalist return to the saxophone for which he is best known. Featuring the soprano sax for the first time on what is a deeply personal project in which Pine is on top form with guests from Africa, the Caribbean and Europe vibrantly exchanging rhythmic tales of life from a truly multi-cultural view point.

DEAD PREZ M-1 and stic.man rode in on the bass driven street anthem ‘It’s Bigger Than Hip Hop’ in 2000. Their debut LP ‘Let’s Get Free’ was an introduction to a new lyrical, political force of enlightenment and edutainment within the NY Hip Hop community with a global message. After ‘RBG: Revolutionary But Gangsta’ four instalments of ‘Turn Off The Radio’ mixtapes and various solo and side projects 2013 saw the duo drop the long awaited new LP ‘Information Age’ an “aural juxtaposition to the technical age using the ancient know-thyselfdiscovery process”. MAINS £16.50

The concept of Mother Tucker is to introduce the masses to the “Smoker Barbeque” style of cooking served up with great music. This type of BBQ is hugely popular in the states but relatively unheard of in the UK and is the best method to cook many different cuts of meat and fish “low and slow”. Cooking is like music in many ways and when it comes from the heart it’s immensely satisfying. In this age of processed food and processed pop music sometimes only a real BBQ and an electric guitar will do. Tom Mateu Head Chef 16

GET THE BLESSING

Following an extensive period of worldwide touring that has celebrated the classic years of Wishbone Ash, Written in the Stars – Live Dates 2014 sees Martin Turner moving positively forwards with a show that not only contains stage favourites and classic album cuts from the extensive Wishbone Ash repertoire, but also introduces brand new music. “Creatively, I still have much to say,” insists Martin Turner. “My song-writing has always been a backdrop to my real-life experiences and I am looking forward to getting creative as we prepare to take my band into its next chapter”.

Formed in 2000 when bassist Jim Barr and drummer Clive Deamer from Portishead joined forces with the twin horns & electronics of saxophonist Jake McMurchie and trumpeter Pete Judge. Winners of the BBC Jazz Award 2008 for their debut album “All Is Yes,” Rarely has a band taken the jazz scene by the scruff of the neck and given it such a good shaking as Get The Blessing. Their last album, OC:DC influenced by Ornette Coleman and Tortoise, to Blondie and Samuel Beckett, GTB consistently confounds expectation and ‘Lope And Antilope’ their new 2014 release just landed.

“Good bands come and go, but great bands just regenerate.” The Move have rock band credentials that speak for themselves. They can boast being the first band to be played on Radio 1, and have toured alongside The Who and Jimi Hendrix. Minus Roy Wood, but still featuring original members Trevor Burton and Bev Bevan.

The Excitements are a heady cocktail of old school soul and authentic, gritty R&B delivered straight from the hip with a whole lot of style and attitude. The Excitements write much of their own material, taking the best elements of the 60s’ era soul to create an instantly classic sound. Fronted by vibrant and vivacious lead singer Koko-Jean Davis, a mixture of Etta James, Tina Turner and Sharon Jones. FUDGE AND THE FREQUENCY & EL BORN Fudge and the Frequency are an energetic music collective who are telling the World to “Wake the Funk UP”. Lead singer Fudge looks just as cutting edge as he sounds. His voice has a soulful rawness to it that cannot be taught or trained. Despite being named after a bohemian district of Barcelona, El Born hail from London. Their debut single ‘1982’ tore straight into the top 20 on iTunes, was subsequently backed by Coldplay and their fan made YouTube video shot to over a quarter of a million views.

GRANDMASTER FLASH

SATURDAY 29 MARCH
