Summer vacation starts with a mystery! I am princess Anelanda and this is my older brother Max the awful! OK, in real life I am not a princess, I just like wearing the tiara and hold the wand and Max is not so awful, he is just like any older brother. He has a parrot, Bitou, who can talk. Together we are the Mighty Mystery Agents and we solve mysteries
5
Summer vacation starts with a MYS TERY! A big black dock walks around and scares people. The strange big black dog growls, barks, darts about, breaks things, What is he looking for?
We must solve this mystery.

“Let’s have ice-cream!” Max suggests to Lila and me. KABOOM! What’s going on? The big black dog showed up again! He’s knocking down the newspaper stand, and starts tearing the papers apart. The store owner runs over to shoo the big black dog away.
11
Today I am going to have a haircut. But… look! What’s going on? What’s all the commotion about?
12
Why is the big black dog behaving so strangely? That’s a mystery! No other dog in the village is behaving like him! We start our investigations.
YOU ARE A NICE PERSON 13
Woof- woof! The big black dog is chasing Max!
“Are YOU OK?” I ask him. What’s going on with the mystery of the big black dog? We must have a meeting with Lila. “The big black dog chased us. We barely made it!” I tell her. Max joins us. He always has good ideas. “We must find out if he belongs to someone” Max suggests. “Let’s ask the neighbors if they know anything” Lila suggests. “Let’s look around in the neighborhood to see where he lives” I am thinking out loud.

“Let’s make a map of the neighborhood” I suggest and Max brings a ruler, paper, pencil and a compass . We mark our posts to start watching out for the big black dog. I take the bag with the mystery-solving accessories and make sure that it includes the binoculars and my camera. Goodbye princess dress! “We must make sure we can communicate” I say, and bring the CB radio my godmother gave me on my birthday.
17
We spend all afternoon in our posts, waiting for the big black dog to show up. The big black dog is nowhere to be seen. In a little while it’s going to get dark and we have to go home. Just when we are about to give up.. Here he is! Max, do you copy? Over! I shout on my CB. “Don’t shout! I get you! Over!” Max replies. Here he comes! The big black dog walks slowly, growling angrily. “Big black dog approaching! Going towards the bushes! Around the park! Over!”
18
“Mom said we should go home” Max reminds me. “Action starts now!” I answer and I forget to say “over.” “Stop! Mission is over!” Max shouts angrily. “ I am a responsible boy and I want to keep my word!” Max says.
MAKES BETTER PRACTICE 19
How disappointing! Before going home, I manage to use our secret alphabet code with Lila and I send her a message: “secret meeting tonight, at midnight”. I go under my bedcover and pretend to be asleep. Afterwards, I get up. I check- n o lig ht at Max’s bedroom. I go out on tiptoes. I meet up with Lila. “Are you ready?” I ask, to muster courage. “Absolutely!” my brave friend Lila replies.

We are walking towards the park. Where could the big black dog be? Maybe he’s involved in such a mystery that if we can manage to solve it our story will be in the local newspaper. Here comes the growling big black dog again! But what is this other sound? Like a soft cry‌
22
As we approach the source of the sound behind the bushes, we are speechless! The big black dog, the one we thought was bad and mean, turns out to be a SHE! She has just given birth to p u p pies , under the bush in the park.
PLAY, LAUGH, LOVE! 23
“BOO! Gotcha!” Max is laughing because he scared us. “What are you doing here?” I ask. “I can ask you the same question” he answers. “I came to see if my little sister is in danger” he smiles.
24
“I am not little, I can look after myself I protest. This is not the time to argue. We have to help the mother dog and her six p u p pies . Oh they are sooo cute!
LEA R N YO FR U R MI OM S T A KES 25
We bring different things: a big bas ket the blanket I had when I was a baby and burgers and fries that we had left over from lunch. We settle the new family and then we go home. We are tired but very proud of our accomplishment! Now everything is explained! The big black dog was snatching food to feed herself and later her p u p pies . She didn’t want to bite the postman, she only wanted to take his bas ket and make it a nice bed for her p u p pies!
26
As for the newspapers and the wigs that she snatched, I think she needed them to use them as blankets! That was a nice mystery! We solved it! We all feel very proud! I think we should keep the big black mommy dog and her p u p pies and name her Princess! I will take care of her and her family, take her on walks every day, we will play, we‌
and then I fall asleep!
