Ex.1 Explore The Datai Langkawi, Malaysia Rainforest Pool Villa Architects : Kerry Hill
Unravelling, Tracing & Mapping
Description 1. Basis for selection of room : The room at first glance feels connected to the nature at same time giving the privacy also. All the elements like windows, door and openings with wooden blinds and curtains created sort of equilibrium. There is transparency in room, from bed you can directly see the bath tub and if one opens up the window, one can directly outlook into the woods. The lower seating provides a very cozy corner for one to just get in and relax and chill. The room is situated in between the forests so it is surrounded by trees from all sides and these windows sort of creates openness in space but at same time gives privacy through blinds, curtains and solid windows at different places and this makes it remarkable. It gives the feeling of space being luxurious. Reference Image
2. Context - local - physical & cultural / brand / typology of hotel rooms : Locally available materials like wood have been extensively used. The roof system is quite similar to the old traditional houses of Malaysia, in fact the construction methods also. The ventilation and open spaces in this villa brings the physical context of the space inside. Even the hotel is divided on this basis of the context i.e. Rain forest Collection, Canopy Collection and Beach Collection. Each collection gives justification to its typology by its location or the view from the windows.

Description 3. Designer’s Intent : The Hotel Langkawi was initially designed by Australian architects, Kerry hills but later on the interior design was done by French designer Didier Lefort. I think the designer has tried to maintain the essence of traditional Malaysian house by its architecture and space planning, layout and the materials. But at same time he wants to make the space look modern and elegant also. So for some parts of furniture he has used this sleek wooden legs which makes the furniture look sleek, minimal and modern which is contradictory to the traditional furniture which is quite bulky and heavy. He has tried to follow up the traditional furniture typology in bed with all this curtains and giving privacy and the lower seating.

Description 4. The room measure up with the architect’s style: The restoring of the resort was done by Didier Lefort. The Datai reputable – a tropical retreat integrated with nature, with a modern interpretation of the Malaysian culture (melding Malay, Chinese and Indian influences) and usage of local, natural materials,” says Lefort. The collaboration of Kerry Hill architects and designer Lefort resulted into in a bespoke resort with strong nuances of the vernacular in a clean vein that is highly sensitive to its environment. The works of Kery hill architects are soulful, textural and strongly connected with the context and culture. So I think this villa has beautifully measured up the architectural language of both the designers.

Material Culture Tracing The architecture and structure of the villa is inspired by the vernacular traditional houses of Malaysia which are known as Malay Houses. These Malay Houses has very specific structure and a strong reason for its every decision. 1. The balcony and deck area of the villa are very much similar to the verandah found in traditional Malay house. It has wooden railings, wooden columns and rafters accompanied with wooden flooring.
1. Outside inside connection through large balcony spaces
2.1 Roof typology of Traditional malay houses 6. 2. Architecture of the villa inspired from Traditional malay house
2. The roof of the villa, provides strong air ventilation by keeping the space cool. Large roofs on two sides of the main roof acts as sunshade. Open interior spaces with minimal partitions allow good ventilation in the house. Fully open-able windows allows ventilation at body level. Diagram 2.1 shows various typology of roof systems in Malay house. 3. Lower seating is also part of traditional furniture. But here, the lower seating is done integrating the upholstery and the cushions and the bolster which adds to the elegance of the space. 4. The traditional Malaysian bed usually is four poster bed with white sheer curtains around it which gives privacy and encloses the bed area. The bed of villa also follows the similar language. 5. The fabrics of the cushions, the rug, the accessories used in the room are quite modern compared to the architecture of the villa.
3. Lower seating comparison
6. The contemporary furniture pieces brings in the elegance and luxury to the room. Vanity stool in langkawi natural walnut with low back and upholstered seat that swivels, small stretcher, and foot bar. Desk in langkawi natural walnut finish with sleek curved modern legs. Contemporary armchair in antique brown mahogany, fully upholstered on the front and back.

The breeze coming from forest across the windows gently moves the sheer bed curtains, adding life to lazy evenings.
Sipping your first morning coffee and enjoying the breakfast by the seating in the balcony amongst forest is a peaceful experience in itself.
The Datai Langkawi is situated on the northwest tip of the island Langkawi in Malaysia. Located in a 10 million year old rainforest and overlooking the tranquil Datai Bay.
The lavish bathroom surrounded by the woods gives you the sense of elegance within nature and brings transparency to the space.
After a trail into the deep forests one finally finds a place to relax, enjoy, chill and be close to the nature. On entering one will see strong connectivity with the greens and transparency within the room. One can feel the cool breeze coming from trees through the windows across the room, bringing that aroma and the essence of forest into the room which is enhanced by the subtle colors and the furniture of the room. The villa offers an enclosed place for a wonderful stay with giving user multiple options to choose their spot for reading a book in the afternoon or be it spending leisure time with the friends and family.
The pelmet for the curtains for bed is slightly bigger than the bed, so it creates a feeling on enclosure between the bed and the rest of the room.
The lower seating by the window invites you to come, sit and relax while looking out of the windows towards the balcony, deck and forest.
TripAdvisor Hotel Reviews
The first response to the design will be how the designer has incorporated the breathtaking beauty of nature into the villa with geographical and physical context of Langkawi, and maintaining the integrity of the place with giving a touch of elegance and luxury.
One might think of being in a wooden palace in the days of malay olde. It manages to juxtapose a traditional native ambience’s, to modern facilities, never sacrificing it’s innocence. - adzim P
The villa is “inside” the forest, therefore it is shaded throughout the day by the massive trees. I love the architecture of Datai. The layout is superb with all the twists and turns making it very “exciting”. - kongeheant Manali Patel | UI5216

Sanctuary, noun; A place where someone or something is protected and given shelter. It can be a holy place that provides peace and shelter from danger. Gajoldoba is well-known for its winter migratory birds and nearby national parks which conserve and preserve wildlife. The concept is inspired from the idea of a place being a natural reserve. The resort will be a place for spending quiet and quality time amidst the nature .It will be a place where nature is preserved and becomes integral part of the experience. The resort will be a peaceful place of relaxation and resting far from the noisy, chaotic world. It will also promote the Eco-tourism which intends to support conservation efforts, observe wildlife and sustainable travel. Caim,(kyem) n. ‘Sanctuary’, an invisible circle of protection, drawn around the body with the hand that reminds that one is safe and loved. A place where one finds peace with privacy and protection. The approach to the design will be holistic approach where every aspect of user well-being is taken into consideration rather than just focusing on a single part. It means that in whole physical, emotional, social and spiritual well-being of entire body and mind will be considered in the space. The surroundings will be integrated with elements of nature like greens, birds and water. Colonial architecture which is the referential context of the site has strong influence from nature, be it the wooden carving on furniture, gingerbread fascia details on roof or floral prints and patterns on the fabric. The interior spaces will reconnect one with nature providing simple aesthetics but a space with good visual and physical connection to nature. The place will bring tranquility for the users amongst nature. The serene experience of place will provide the feeling of being inside a Sanctuary.

In the first lounge cane weaving furniture is used and on moving further inside more comfortable furniture has been used. The finishes are kept raw and natural rather than more polished and finish materials which reflects Influences from tropical modern furniture and few colonial fixtures which compliments the space. The language followed is tropical modern where local materials and finishes have been used for the first user experience while the bar and restro has contempary approach to the materials and form but keeping the essence of the colonial influence in fabrics and lamps and the material palette.
