MANAYUNK.COM Mexican to BBQ With an excellent array of restaurants to choose from in Manayunk, Nick Farina has brought yet another option to the table, Union Taco. After great success on Girard Avenue in Philadelphia, he has brought Union Taco to Manayunk and we’re excited to announce that Union Taco made its big debut at 4229 Main Street this summer. On Friday, July 25th, Union Taco opened its doors and sampled free tacos for 2 hours, the line was out the door. Featuring what has been described as “Americanized tacos,” the Union Taco menu includes a variety of options with unique ingredients. With items like oxtail tacos, pork cheek tortas and strawberry habanero guacamole, it’s hard to resist a visit to Manayunk’s latest Mexican addition to Main Street. And in case that’s not enough to entice you, Union Taco also welcomes BYOT (bring-your-own-tequila) and provides complimentary margarita mixers. Union Taco is looking forward to offering different dining options for the local community. They will have dine in, take out, and delivery Tuesday through Sunday. And coming soon, they will also offer late night hours until 3am Thursday through Saturday. These options will make a great addition to Main Street and Union Taco’s casual and quick nature is sure to see success here in Manayunk. Comfort food just got even more comfortable. The bar-b-que you know and love from Deke’s Bar-B-Q on Shurs Lane is now available for takeout from the new Ridge Avenue location, which also opened this summer. Dine in is still open at the garage at 443 Shurs Lane, or you can opt for takeout from the 4901 Ridge Avenue location, formerly known as Tommy Gunns. Bring home your favorite signature sandwich, smoked meats, and tasty sides from Deke’s Bar-B-Q to enjoy in the comfort of your kitchen.— KATIE KAVANAUGH

SNEAK A PEEK
What Is Art? The Manayunk Arts Festival turned a quarter century this year and we wanted to celebrate this big anniversary by focusing on what art really is. So we asked visitors to answer the question, “What Is Art” and then step into the Poseybooth Photobooth so we could capture their responses…and some funny faces too. Art is subjective, art is universal, and as you can see, art can be anything and it’s everywhere. What is art to you?

Discovering your personal aesthetic by removing visual clutter, adding textures and layers, and using a simple color palette. By Stacy Jackson
O
ne of the most important tools of creating a simple and peaceful environment is editing. Visual clutter can cause a space to appear busy and claustrophobic. Often visual clutter is caused by not having the confidence to choose few objects over many. I believe to make a space special it is helpful to embrace the idea that less is more. The idea isn’t to make your space appear sparse; rather it is to use the best of what you have to make a visual statement. For instance, if you are someone who likes to collect old post cards, vintage photos or old magazine clippings you can make a collage. They can be arranged in an old picture frame, shadow box or pinned to old corkboard. That will give what could be seen as clutter, a spot to be shown and enjoyed. Collections are incredibly fun to make and are also great to create a story about you and your space. Another element of design is texture and layering. Some of my favorite materials to work with are cotton, linen and handspun wool. I find them to be soft textures that can be used on roughly hewn wood surfaces as a contrast. Naturally aged wood and metal are also great materials. I love them because as they age they become even more beautiful. Metals such as copper, bronze and brass are stunning when they have a well developed patina. A great natural aesthetic can be achieved with a balance of these types of textures. One example of this synergy would be to place a handspun linen runner on an old wooden farm table. Try adding hand-dyed dinner napkins, a variety of white 14
plates and vintage silverware to complete the look. Having a simple color palette will anchor your space. When there are too many colors in a space, it is distracting. I would suggest starting with one color and working within its tones and variations. Complementary colors can be added in once the overall palette is set. For example, if you chose indigo blue as your foundation, you could start with a lighter shade on the walls and a darker shade for your textiles and accessories. White could be added in as contrast. This idea works well for other colors, especially neutral tones. A simple aesthetic is something that is organically cultivated. It takes practice and play. Keep in mind that you may add and subtract elements many times over before finding a look that resonates with you. It is part of the process of discovering your aesthetic. The space you create should be part of you and a place that reflects your sensibilities and lifestyle. My advice is to stay inspired, stay engaged and use your imagination. The rest will naturally follow. Stacy Jackson is the owner of Meadowsweet Mercantile located at 4390 Main Street. www.meadowsweetmercantile.com

You’ve eaten there countless times and have tried every beer on their list, now it’s time to meet the man behind The Manayunk Brewing Company. By Jane Lipton
Michael Rose was born and raised in Germantown and his love affair with the restaurant business started by chopping 50lbs of onions a day for five bucks. It wasn’t long before he moved up to making cheese steaks at Joe’s Steaks on Wayne Avenue. At 19 he began his bar experience by working side-by-side with his true inspiration his Dad, Salvatore, at his bar in the Logan section of Philadelphia. Rose’s first foray into bar ownership was in 1983 when he opened The Rose Cafe on Maplewood Mall. His next move was as a bartender at the Catfish Cafe’ in East Falls. From there he helped to open the original Goat Hollow in West Mt. Airy. In 1987, he made his way to Manayunk and became managing partner at Thomas’ Restaurant. By 1997, he was offered the managing partner position at The Manayunk Brewery and he hasn’t looked back.
MM: When did you arrive in Manayunk and what was it like? Before working here in Manayunk, I was a regular customer of many Main Street establishments including Jamie’s, Thomas’, C. D. Binks and the River Deck. There were not nearly as many restaurants or much night life back then, it was just the beginning of the renaissance. MM: What drew you here? I guess it really was Tom Martin, the owner of Thomas’. He presented me with an opportunity to come work in Manayunk. I liked the way this small-town felt and I knew I would be comfortable here. The restaurant business, any business really, is about building relationships. By patronizing the businesses here, I was able to establish a relationship with Tom, and well, I’ve been here ever since. MM: You’ve seen many changes in Manayunk over the years, what strikes you as the most significant? You know I’ve been here for 27 years and I am most impressed by how Manayunk feels, it feels safe, if feels clean, it feels like people care. It feels like a neighborhood. I also appreciate how hard everyone here has worked to make Manayunk a destination for shopping, dining and recreation. Manayunk plays host to the Arts Festival, the Philadelphia Bike Race, the StrEAT Food Festival and so many other great events. It’s really a great place to live and work. MM: The river view from your deck is spectacular but the river also presents challenges... It’s no secret that our biggest challenge is Mother Nature. We have had the river overflow five times here in the last 18 years, but we’re still here! And, I’ll tell you what, my crew here is terrific! They pitch in to do whatever it takes to get us back up and running and they work hard to give top service to our patrons. Aside from Mother Nature’s unpredictability, when I come to work every day and look at the view of the river from our deck, I can’t help but think that I have the best office view around. MM: What made you want to start brewing beer? Credit for that goes to Harry Renner III, the original Manayunk Brewing company owner. He approached me when I was the managing partner at Thomas’ Restaurant about opening a brewery in Manayunk. Quite frankly, I thought that he was out of his mind, but it turns out he had a vision. He made me a believer. MM: Other than your business, what drives you? Most important to me? Family and friends. What I get excited about? Sport fishing, I go as often as Fall 2014 | manayunk.com 17
COVERSTORY.indd 17

COVER PROFILE I can. Before the accident it would have been riding my motorcycle. I used to love to ride, it helped me clear my head and it got my MOJO flowing. MM: I know your daughter has worked at the restaurant over the years, has it become a family affair? True, my daughter Paris does work here one night a week, and my son Dylan works here several nights a week, I enjoy that. Only time will tell if this becomes a family affair. MM: How has the Brewery changed over the years? Are there some things that will never change? Well, we will always be a brewery and we’ll always be dedicated to great 18
food so that won’t change, but yes we’ve grown and adapted over the years. We started with seating for 180, now we can seat more than 500. Another great example of change was the addition of our sushi bar, which has become a great success. I don’t think there is another brewery that has a sushi bar on their premises. People tend to think of typical bar food with beer, but we’ve always worked to reach higher. Sushi is a great healthy choice and our customers love it. MM: What do you feel most proud of in regards to the brewery? We’re most proud of what we give back to the community. We support North Light Community Center and other local charitable organizations. Every year the entire team really gets behind our “Giving Thanks” program and last year our staff prepared food for more than 1200 people who are less fortunate than us. Yeah, I’m proud of that. MM: People call your restaurant everything from “The Brewery” to “Brew Pub.” What do you call it? We call it The Manayunk Brewing Company, but people can call it what they want. I don’t care what nickname they have for the place as long as they come here. What’s the saying? “You can call me anything, as long as you don’t call me late for dinner.”
Editors Note: Since first arriving in Manayunk, Rose has been instrumental in supporting the local community. He serves on both the Manayunk Development Corporation and the Manayunk Special Services District boards. He was instrumental in bringing kayak and canoe tours to Manayunk and has always supported local recreation. Recently he was asked to become a member of the brand new Venice Island Performing Arts Center Non-Profit committee where he’ll continue to bring his passion for Manayunk and outdoor recreation to those who live in, and visit this neighborhood.

DINE.THE PERFECT POUR
THE CRAFT BEER REPORT The best locally brewed craft beers, as chosen by Manayunk’s experts. By Caitlin Maloney
With a new craft beer being released what feels like almost daily, we wanted to bring some attention back to the many great craft beers brewed right here in Pennsylvania. So we hit the streets of Manayunk to ask the experts what their favorite local craft beers are. We wanted to know why it was their favorite and what they would pair it with on their menu. For many it was a hard decision, for others there was an easy winner, but with so many to choose from, we’ll take their word that the beers that made the cut are top knotch. We’ll have what they’re drinking.

Who Says Healthy Can’t Be Sweet?
Meet the three women in Manayunk changing the gluten-free food industry one bagel at a time. By Cara Gavin

all just got even tastier in Manayunk with the addition of Sweet Note Bakery, a gluten-free manufacturer specializing in healthy bagel options. The company is owned and operated by local entrepreneur, Michelle MacDonald, and is managed by Philadelphians, Brittany Nettles and Alison Vandermay. These baking beauties have roots deep in the area and are excited to share their vision with the Manayunk locals. Inspired by her grandfather’s and sister’s struggle with celiac disease, MacDonald started her business in September 2012 and created the recipe for her Sweet Note gluten-free, vegan bagel without milk, eggs, dairy, soy or nuts. MacDonald says, “I chose bagels because my grandfather told me how terrible every [gluten-free] bagel was. It took me two months and 15 tries…I was definitely determined to figure it out. After I started selling, it kept evolving. I thought it needed to be all of these interesting things, but I found that the gluten-free customer didn’t think that.” MacDonald understands the value of the gluten-free market. According to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA), one in every 133 Americans has celiac disease and only 83 percent of those affected are actually diagnosed. MacDonald knows “it’s definitely huge” to offer healthier choices. “Now that I am gluten-free myself, it really is frustrating,” she says. “Half of my family is all gluten-free, and we plan where we’re going to go based on where we can find gluten-free op24
tions.” Luckily, Sweet Note Bakery’s bagels are available in 14 states and 150 locations, including the option to ship online. But it all starts right here in Manayunk. Sweet Note bagels are made fresh in their warehouse on Krams Avenue and sold to local establishments, like Winnie’s Le Bus on Main Street, The Foodery on Ridge Avenue, at the Main Line Baking Company and at select ShopRite stores. The Sweet Note team chose to invest in Manayunk because “we wanted to be in the city,” says MacDonald. “This is our first facility of our own where we aren’t sharing,” she says. “It was the perfect space for us and there’s opportunities to expand.” Although there is no Sweet Note storefront for now, MacDonald isn’t writing it off. “We are really working on perfecting what we‘re doing first, but if the opportunity presented itself to open a store here, we would definitely consider it,” she says. “As we grow, we also would like to do more things locally with the Pretzel Park Farmer’s Market.” For now, MacDonald is focusing on getting her bagels into the right locations and making sure the vendors are trained to handle gluten-free food properly. The Sweet Note team partners with the NFCA, which is headquartered in Ambler, to offer training programs to store employees. “This is really important to us. It defeats the purpose if there is cross-contamination between cutting boards and knives,” says McDonald. “Most of our shops take extra precautions because celiac touches them personally or they know someone who has it,” explains MacDonald. Not only does Sweet Note want to make gluten-free food accessible to the public, they also want to ensure that their bagels are safe from the start of the baking process to the final sale. In order to promote the gluten-free lifestyle, the Sweet Note team wants to ensure that healthy choices don’t start and end with the morning bagel. Their motto is “Always start and end your day on a sweet note,” meaning no matter what happens, begin and end the day with a positive outlook. This mission is embraced by their small team, which looks for ways to infuse positivity and alternative eating habits into people’s life choices. MacDonald is a piloxing instructor on the side, where she promotes the use of Pilates and boxing to stay active. Nettles, the president of sales and marketing for the bakery, also has her own healthy living blog, FreckledNettles.com, where she offers nutritious recipes, fitness advice and coupons for gluten-free products. Part of what it means to be gluten-free, according to
MacDonald, is making conscious choices in all aspects of life – even a bagel. Cara Gavin is a local freelance writer and is part of our new initiative to get local voices into the Manayunk Magazine. Interested in writing about your community? Email Caitlin Maloney at cmaloney@manayunk.org.

Opening Eyes The Bazemore Gallery exhibits photographs from a South African youth photography workshop.

In February 2013, a group of teens from three townships near Cape Town, South Africa, came together for a journey. They didn’t travel far, but they began a journey of discovery that could profoundly influence the direction they choose to take next. They gathered for a photography workshop led by Photography for Change, a South Africa-based non-profit organization that uses photography as a tool for learning. Their workshops are designed to open eyes and change perspectives—a means of restoring hope and inspiring dreams in children from disadvantaged communities across Africa. Photography for Change helps children look at their lives differently, not only by taking photos but also by sharing their thoughts in group discussions and individual diaries. Over six consecutive Saturdays, the children learn the techniques of photography and then begin to document their lives. They discover how visual storytelling can give them the freedom to examine who they are and what they want to do with their lives. Guided by specific assignments and themes, they are encouraged to look for beauty and value where they may have never seen it before—in their homes, in their neighborhoods, and especially in themselves. The stories they tell are empowering. Photography helps release a voice in

When they see things they want to change, they start to realize that they have choices and can have a say in shaping their own future. Fittingly, the workshop ends with the opportunity to share their voices through a public exhibit of their work. Philadelphia-based nonprofit, Love to Langa, sponsored this workshop in collaboration with their South African partner, Southern Africa Sustainable Development Initiative (SASDI.) Thanks to the generosity of The Bazemore Gallery in Manayunk, PA, they will have an opportunity to present a selection of the photographs from November 20-December 13, 2014. PLAY.ALONG THE TRAIL
Escaping The Treadmill To Take To The Trail A local explores the Manayunk Towpath and Wissahickon Park. By Courtney Ras

It’s
fall in Manayunk, which means leaves are changing, the mornings are getting crisp and as the weather gets colder, gyms start to get packed. You may be looking for a place to keep your workout going to break away from the mundane four walls filled with rows of stationary machines. Why not hit the trails and outdoor life of Manayunk and its surrounding areas? Having moved to Manayunk, a cozy neighborhood in Philadelphia, from an area that is populated by mountains, trees and hiking trails around every corner, the change of scenery was overwhelming for any outdoorsy type of folk. Being a fresh transplant to Manayunk, I found myself yearning to escape the concrete concubines of the city and find some peace and quiet amongst nature. I yearned, but had no idea where to go lay my footprints. After a few quick keyboard clicks and numerous days of walking aimlessly around Manayunk, I came across some great escapes. A great first stop for a quick outdoor excursion is the Manayunk Towpath. The Towpath is only steps away from Main Street, literally STEPS away. Nestled along the canal and Schuylkill River, Manayunk’s beautiful towpath is a little over 4 miles of the 22-mile Schuylkill River Trail. The Towpath is a great place to run, walk, jog, or bike, but it doesn’t offer extreme hiking. The second you step on the trail at any of its entrances, city life falls away and you’ll feel enveloped by the natural environment. The further you walk the greener it gets. You’ll find yourself amongst neighbors and residents of the area on their bikes, running, or even walking their dog (which is a huge part of Manayunk life). The mix of gravel, concrete, and boardwalk lead you away from the everyday hustle and bustle of city life and everyday gym going. manayunk.com | Fall 2014

A second stop, Wissahickon Park, is within just a few minutes of Manayunk. Wissahickon Park is a great place to hike, bike, run, and even horseback ride. The Forbidden Drive trail in Wissahickon Park begins across from Ridge Avenue in Manayunk, where Lincoln Drive is accessed, and ends at Northwestern Avenue in Chestnut Hill. There are more than 50 miles of trails to explore. The infamous Forbidden Drive is a gravel pathway that runs alongside Wissahickon Creek and many local trail hikers are offered a variety of different outdoor activities. Traveling alongside both sides of Forbidden Drive are two wooded ridges filled with trails that allow one to explore the valley and even some historical and anthropological sites. Mountain bikers, hikers and people just wishing to get away into nature can be found happily making their way through the woodsy trails. As a resident in Manayunk, I often find that it takes less than 5 minutes to find an entrance to Wissahickon Park and from there I can get lost for hours exploring numerous trails that stretch from creek to ridge top. Here amongst the woods, it is so easy to forget and sometimes a bit mind boggling to think that you are in Philadelphia city limits. Manayunk’s busy Main Street and packed gyms sometimes make one wish they could flee the city and wander into nature. If you’re looking to escape without putting miles on your odometer, head down to the Manayunk towpath or take foot on one of the closest trails to Manayunk, in Wissahickon Park. Just remember whichever trail you choose to give yourself a break from the treadmill, wander on peacefully and leave only your footprints behind.
