tephen Falvo, owner of Art + Science, never really had dreams of owning his own salon. He started his career in photography and found he was more interested in the hair and makeup on the models than the physical photograph, so he transitioned to the beauty industry without looking back. After working for 10 years, Falvo knew he wanted to open a salon that was unlike any other. Falvo’s goal: to create a place where stylists could create a career path, be offered benefits, see themselves as professionals, and run a company that would always exceed the expectations of the customers. “I worked in many different types of salons through the years and learned what I wanted and what I didn’t,” Falvo said. In 2004 that goal became a reality. Art + Science opened in Manayunk and it became a staple on Main Street and in Philadelphia, where with its many salons and spas it can be a challenge to distinguish yourself. But, Art + Science has succeeded in doing just that. From their eco-conscious mind-set to their extensive training program for their staff, Art + Science is determined to set themselves above the rest, especially when it comes to customer service. Customer service is something that Falvo has seen lacking in many businesses, so for him, treating every client, like it’s the first time they have walked through the salon’s doors is his philosophy. “We treat our clients like they are guests in our home, from the moment they call until they leave. We want you to have an experience when you visit us, not an appointment,” Falvo said.

Their strong customer service skills are one reason why Art + Science’s referral business is such a huge success. Falvo believes that 80% of their business comes from referrals from happy customers, and the three minute complimentary massages before every haircut, hot towel service, and offering of a cup of hot tea all contribute to happy satisfied clients. The men and women behind this, the Art + Science staff, are something to talk about as well. Falvo said the main thing he looks for in a new team member is that they have to be nice, “because although you can teach someone a technical haircut, you can’t teach them to be nice,” he said. “I don’t ever feel like it’s me who owns the business, but a team of people that create the business who work with me,” Falvo said. “I think having your team feel that ownership, let’s them feel that they are invested in the business.” Before or after your salon treatment, customers can also shop for AVEDA products in the salon’s store on the Giving free massages during appointments at Art + Science ground level. goes along with their mission to treat every client like they are guests in their home.

Because Art + Science is an AVEDA concept salon, they retail only AVEDA products, which are made from naturally and organically derived ingredients. “We provide everything you would need from head to toe – from hair care to skin and body care,” Falvo said. Though there are many products to choose from, Flavo suggested some of his favorites. If you’re worrying about hair loss and thinning, Falvo offers AVEDA’s newest line called Invati-Solutions. Said to reduce hair loss and thinning by 33%, the line is created with 97% naturally derived ingredients. Falvo said the Green Science Skin care line is also a must try to help with anti-aging because it uses ingredients that work from the inside out. For those suffering from dry winter hair, Falvo suggests their in-store Botanical therapy treatment that can be added on to your cut or color in just an extra five minutes. Falvo also recommends trying their Dry Remedy System of shampoo, conditioner, and a treatment mask. Use the mask once a week for 10 minutes and you’ll be sure to see results, he said. If dry skin is your issue, Falvo said this time of year is the best time for facials and body wraps. He suggests their Botanical Skin Resurfacing facial to remove dry skin or their Caribbean Therapy Body Treatment with a seaweed mask to increase moisture. “Most people think that applying heavy moisturizers is what they should do, but you have to remove the dry surface cells first,” Falvo said.

If you’re still on the hunt for a good Valentine’s Day gift, Art + Science offers couples massages and facial treatments in a couple’s spa room, so they, “can provide a complete day of services with your loved one by your side,” Falvo said. Pick out anything pink and red in the store, like lipsticks or blushes, and get a special promotion too. And if you can’t make up your mind, gift cards can always be ordered from their web site. Falvo originally chose Manayunk as his businesses home because of its central location and has since loved watching it grow and change since opening in 2004. He also enjoys the sense of comradery between the businesses. “I believe we have a community of business owners that want to be successful and know that we can all work together to make that happen,” Falvo said. “Where else can you go that on one street there are five hair salons and we are all successful.” In the future, Falvo is hoping to expand his brand into center city and the suburbs, but for now he’s focusing on continuing to grow his team and presence in Manayunk and possibly offering organic nail services to their menu. “Art + Science is definitely fulfilling my dreams and then some,” Falvo said. “My biggest joy is to watch my team grow.” To learn more about Art + Science visit artplusscience.com and be sure to sign up for their newsletter to get news on product launches and promotions by clicking on “Beauty Alerts”.

f you haven’t already noticed, Winnie’s LeBus has a new look. The hot topic of discussion, the new facade. Chef John O’Brien, said customers began commenting on the new changes immediately, including the new awning and a new gray and black classic sign, that has replaced the pastel colored sign of the past. “We wanted a fresher and cleaner look,” O’Brien said of the changes. “We are always adding new, exciting, and fresh menu items.” But people still come in every morning just for the bread, which is why Winnie’s still holds their roots in LeBus by serving their fresh made breads that are delivered daily every morning. They also serve homemade goods as well, with their new addition being plain, blueberry or cranberry corn muffins in mini and full size. Besides the new exterior, owner Winnie Clowry said there will be changes coming to the interior as well, including updates to the bar, softer earth toned paint colors, and murals featuring the Manayunk Bridge, Bike Race, and Arts Festival.

Page 10

“I wanted to feature local Manayunk landmarks to maintain the neighborhood feel,” Winnie said. Although LeBus has transformed throughout the years, Winnie’s has remained a lasting staple in the community where you can hangout and get great food made from healthy natural ingredients. “It always had a neighborhood feel since the beginning,” said O’Brien. “Most servers live in the area and most of the customers are local too.” O’Brien began working at the restaurant back in 1992, when it was called LeBus Main Street before Winnie bought it in 2003. When asked why he has stuck around so long, O’Brien replied, “because I like Winnie, but who doesn’t.” “I’ve always felt very comfortable here with the style of food and cuisine, and we have a great staff – the food, the people, the décor,” O’Brien said. “It’s not uptight or pretentious, we don’t have white table clothes, it’s just real relaxed.” Keeping up with the relaxed homemade theme, Winnie’s features heartier dishes during the winter months to keep you

Though the menu at Winnie’s is ever changing, continued on page 12 O’Brien said there are few staples that will always remain his favorites. The Blue Colorado Salad, made with homemade ancho chili glazed chicken and the French Toast, made with thick slices are French Brioche are his two picks. If you’re in need of a good bowl of soup, the daily soup options, which are made from scratch every morning at 6 am are perfect for a warm winter lunch or dinner. Everyday Winnie’s offers one vegetarian and one non-vegetarian soup option along with their famous Turkey Chilli with Grilled Cornbread and their Vegetarian Chilli, both customer favorites. Winnie’s bartenders and staff also develop seasonal drink specials offered during happy hours and dinners. Drinks like hot spiked apple cider, winter sangria and their new drink called the cinnamon bun, made with rum, cinnamon, brown sugar and whipped cream, are currently featured. “It tastes just like the real thing,” O’Brien said of the cinnamon bun drink. Winnie’s has updated their façade with a fresh look and their new black and gray sign has been the hot topic of discussion in Manayunk.

n case you haven’t heard, Venice Island in Manayunk is undergoing a major transformation. What once was a parking lot and an outdated community recreation center is now a major construction site. Symbolic of what is to come is the unencumbered view to the River from this stretch of land. The planned project will continue this visual connection to the river as well as create other opportunities for visitors to experience nature firsthand. Brought about by the need to build an underground water storage basin, the final product of this project by the Philadelphia Water Department will include state of the art recreation and performing arts facilities, athletic courts, children’s play area and parking. The site design reflects sustainable, ecologically sensitive stormwater management design and riverbank restoration, while providing a much-needed public space in Manayunk. It will enhance what is already a popular recreational hub frequented by bicyclists, runners, birdwatchers, fishermen, kayakers and dog walkers. Concurrent projects on the Canal and Towpath will also serve to enhance recreational resources. Come visit the Visitors Gateway located at the Manayunk Development Corporation at 4312 Main Street. Open 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, the gateway features an interactive touch screen kiosk as well as trail maps. Or learn about all there is to do and the progress of projects by going online to destinationschuylkillriver.org.
