This past February, the Mummers strutted their stuff down Manayunk’s beautiful and historic Main Street, during the second annual Mummers Mardi Gras Parade. All 17 String Bands were in attendance at this family-friendly event which raised much needed funds for this beloved Philadelphia institution. Below are some of the dynamic images, captured by Manayunk’s own, JPG Photography.

Within a one mile corridor of Main Street and the surrounding side streets sits Manayunk’s vibrant business community. From specialty stores to high end boutiques and grab and go food to farm to table restaurants, Manayunk has it all. With so much diversity, we wanted to put the call out to you, the public, to nominate your favorite Manayunk businesses in 75 different Best Of categories. We counted the nominations and from there the top five businesses in each category moved forward to the voting round. More than 34,000 votes were cast and here we bring you, the Best Of Manayunk 2016. On March 24th, Manayunk businesses and community members gathered to celebrate the Best Of Manayunk at a cocktail party in the historic Nickels Building. Guests enjoyed food samples from Manayunk’s winning restaurants, an open bar and live entertainment with all ticket proceeds benefiting two Manayunk based nonprofits, North Light Community Center and Starfinder Foundation We’d like to thank all of our Manayunk Magazine team members and freelance writers who contributed to the content of this issue: Jane Lipton, Caitlin Maloney, Colleen Savage, Leo Dillinger, Sarah Coughlin, Carly McGowan, Erika Mortiz, Noel Bartocci and Ainsley Maloney.

OUR CHARITIES Starfinder Foundatio Established in 2002 by Liverpool native Tony Williams, Starfinder is an organization that gives children from inner city communities the chance to use soccer as a means to learn social values, life skills, and other aspects of youth development. After floating around from various outreach sites for six years, the organization finally found a home in Manayunk in 2008. “We use soccer as a vehicle. It’s a hook. It’s a way to grab the kids’ passion,” Executive Director Heidi Warren said. “Our purpose is youth development. So soccer is in service of these greater youth development goals: Helping young people develop the skill sets, the knowledge base, the access to resources and guidance that will help them succeed in their lives. That’s what we’re here for.” There are two different types of programs offered at Starfinde . The first and most essential is the Senior Leaders Program. Running from November to June, this program gives roughly 100 high school students the opportunity to expand their knowledge health and fitness, academia, and leadership cultivation. The other program takes place in the summer, where roughly 300 to 350 kids between 6 and 14 have the chance to sharpen their soccer skills and make new friends. Participants of the Senior Leaders Program even serve as mentors, coaches, and role models for the younger kids. “Our high school students are at a stage where they need tremendous support: figuring out what is this next step after high school, sticking it out through high school, and also moving on successfully to the next stage in their lives,” Heidi said. “It’s about helping them to make those transi-

tions successfully and we found that this was where we could make some of our greatest impact.” Starfinder is always looking for a helping hand, from donated soccer gear to SAT prep books and access to online courses. But two of the most vital areas of community aid come from volunteerism and financial support. With a small staff of five full-time employees and a limited budget, there is only so much the Starfinder team can do. Currently, they are looking to raise money to improve the facility including a new roof and bathroom renovations. Though these projects don’t directly expand their programming, it gives their kids the atmosphere they need to thrive and succeed. “Originally the name was sort of like every child finding the star within themselves that we all can achieve,” Heidi said. “But I’m also thinking about how the stars in the sky are something that we use to navigate. The constellations, the North Star, these are things that are literally guiding lights throughout the ages and our young people are working out their own navigation, their own pathways. They’re figuring out their own way with our support. But they are also becoming guiding lights to those young people who follow them.”

North Light Community Center Celebrating their 80th anniversary this year, N orth Light has been serving the Manayunk-Roxborough community since 1936. Originally called North Light Boys Club, this organization was founded by Police Captain Franklin Luckman and School Principal Anne Wright as a way to deter the neighborhood boys from vandalizing the town after school. The first community center was located in a vacant storefront at what is now Taqueria Feliz, but moved to its present location at 175 Green Lane in 1938. Since it’s founding, North Light has expanded their programing in numerous ways. Their oldest and most well-known is their Kidzone afterschool program, which gives children the opportunity to work on homework, get tutored, make arts and crafts, and learn music. They also have summer camps for kids, teen programs that help students apply to college and find career paths, local sports programs, community classes, and emergency assistance including grants to help residents with utility bills and a bi-weekly food cupboard. “Last year, that food cupboard distributed 120,000 pounds of food,” Director of Institutional Advancement Dana Dabek said. “To give you some perspective, I started here in 2013 and that year we gave out 80,000 pounds of food. So we serve about 1,000 people here through that program.” Right now, there are six full-time employees, one consultant, and various part-time employees in a given season. With a budget that is 90% reliant on independent donations, N orth Light is always looking for fundraising opportunities over the course of the year. But it isn’t just about donating money either. The center collects canned food and nonperishable foods, donated computers and office supplies, and athletic and recreational equipment. 12

LIVE.indd 12

N orth Light also thrives on donated time. Last year, N orth Light saw an estimated 1,000 volunteers contribute more than 11,000 hours of service in various capacities. Whether it’s individuals working the food cupboard or entire companies cleaning the facility, there are numerous opportunities for residents and businesses in Manayunk to give back to the community. “The thing that I always say to people is, ‘Come visit us. Come see what we do,’” Dana said. “Bring your kids to our playground. We want to be a true community center and I know a lot of people often feel intimidated to just come into the building because they think that our programs and services are only for specific people or you have to be enrolled in something in order to come in and that’s not true. We want people to feel comfortable. I love giving tours and I love telling people about North Light.”

Best Outdoor Recreation Area: Manayunk Towpath

Of all the Best of Manayunk categories, this may be toughest to fully explain or define. There’s no owner, no chef, no gym instructor, etc. In fact, there’s rarely one person who steers and focuses what a public area is going to mean to everyone. Sure, there are fantastic people who bring attention to it and work tirelessly to keep it in shape for all comers. People like Kay Sykora, who has been and is still involved in securing funding to restore the canal, the trail, and newly reopened Manayunk Bridge. Individuals like her help make the towpath great, but their work stops short of how the rest of us incorporate it into our lives. “I use it all year long…we use it a lot,” local Alex Costa explained to me, referring to her and her corgi Lily. “Less when it’s cold, because it gets dark earlier, but almost every day.” The Manayunk section of the towpath is approximately 1.5 miles long and part of a system of trails called The Circuit, which run from Center City to Phoenixville. Our section of the trail is lovingly referred to as the towpath because of its paral14

LIVE.indd 14

lel placement to the canal. The actual towpath is on the other side of the canal, underneath the tracks, named as such due to the trail patted down by caravans, carriages, and donkeys many, many years ago. But these are just the facts. Why does our very own slice of a larger trail resonate so much with the residents of Manayunk? To better understand it, I solicited the help of the aforementioned Alex, a local well versed on the ins and outs of our neighborhood, to describe to me what it means to her. In our discussion it became clear that the beauty of the Towpath lied fi mly in its consistency and simplicity. Its always there, a major or minor part of your day, unwavering in its availability. Whether you’re training for the Broad Street Run, taking your pup out for a quick walk, or just strolling down the trail to collect your thoughts. It’s often the basic pleasures that are the hardest to articulate but possess the fondest applications. Our trail falls fi mly into a similar category of classification It’s up to us, the locals and visitors who find ourselves traversing the towpath, to truly define the culture of this shared space – not the geese who try to muscle it from us every Spring (stay strong, runners). The

neighborhood has heroes that take care and work tirelessly to improve it, but then they leave it. They leave it there for us to explore and purpose how we see fit. We all own it and are responsible for how great it is – so keep up the good work, Manayunk, and be kind to the rest of those that share it. Unlike those geese… blocking the whole path and getting testy when you try to pass by… don’t be like that. Honorable Mention: Pretzel Park

Best Customer Service: The Spiral Bookcase

112 Cotton Street - 215-482-0704

On a recent Sunday afternoon, Manayunk’s independent bookstore, The Spiral Bookcase, is buzzing with customers as they weave in and out of the vast assortment of books. Two women share a smile as they notice a sign urging them to indulge their literary pleasures: “Go ahead. Smell the books.” And it’s very likely that after we leave, owner Ann Tetreault will remember more about us than just our names. “I really like hearing about what books customers are reading. Books are such a common denominator that to find that commonality instantly builds a connection between us. The type of business we are lends itself to making deeper connections, and we want to experience that with every person that walks through the door.” This neighborhood independent bookstore carries a broad range of titles spanning every genre, including fiction, sci-fi, history, classics, cookbooks, travel, children’s, spirituality, local interests, and much more. The vastness of the selection, Ann says, is the result of a community-cultivated effort. “Our customers help develop the shop — not only through their recommendations, but also through the trades they bring in,” Ann said, referring to her Trade Policy that allows customers to trade in gently-used books for store credit. “I consider my time here as a continued learning experience. So any time a customer shares an author or book I hadn’t heard about, I consider that an opportunity to add to the repertoire of what I can bring into the shop.” Local residents treat Ann’s bookstore as a neighborhood hub — a 18

SHOP.indd 18

place for likeminded people to share ideas. With this in mind, Ann has created a book club in order to bring the local literary community together on a monthly basis. “We’ve developed a really great book club that’s been so successful in bringing people together to celebrate the most talked-about books, the buzz books, like The Martian [by Andy Weir].” This month, she will be starting a young adult book club for junior-high kids to come together and talk about their favorite novels. Ann also seeks to strengthen Manayunk’s literary culture and sense of community by hosting free events in her shop. She’s also co-hosted family events in Pretzel Park, such as last year’s Tea in the Park, an Alice in Wonderland literary-themed party. “Children were able to get together and have a giant tea party around a whimsical table, while actors from a local theatre dressed up like Alice and the White Rabbit,” Ann explained. “Sweet Elizabeth’s donated cupcakes. I’m always looking for ways to collaborate with local businesses, and to create something outside of the store that can help to build a sense of community.” Ann’s ability to foster genuine relationships has turned many of her customers into regulars, and many regulars into friends. “I live in Manayunk and work in Manayunk, so my connections at the bookstore go beyond the store. They’re part of my day, my every day. I think most of our customers feel we offer more than a transaction. Books can really say something about a person, so it’s really a type of vulnerability to share and hear their story about a favorite book they read. It’s about building trust with our customers so that when we share books we personally love with them, we really believe that those books will resonate deeply with them. SHOP: BEST OF MANAYUNK Best Gift Boutique: The Little Apple

Since the day The Little Apple first opened its doors in February of 2010, it quickly became a shopping destination not just in Manayunk, but throughout Philadelphia. Originally owned by Molly Cygan Rossettie, the shops name came from the idea that Philadelphia was the ‘little’ New York City. After Molly’s husbands’ job led them to relocate to California, the fate of the beloved Main Street shop was on the line. That was until, frequent customer Brandy Deieso stepped in and made her dream of owning a shop into a reality. When Brandy bought the business in June of 2013, she wanted to make sure she kept The Little Apple brand that customers loved so much intact. That meant keeping some customer favorites – the ones they would come back again and again for – including the custom hometown street signs, the greeting card wall, and the coveted Capri Blue Jar Volcano scented candles. Brandy also made it her own by bringing in new vendors and continuously adding to her ever expanding inventory. Next month though, she’ll really be making it her own as she moves the shop just a few doors down to 4361 Main Street. The bottom floor will become The Little Apple’s new home, while Brandy and her husband Joe will live on the top two floors of the building “The new space will be a permanent home for The Little Apple, since we will own the building so exciting to know that I can be there as long as I want,” Brandy said. “And I’m excited to live in Manayunk since I’ve never lived here. I anticipate going out to eat and drink more often, but at least I can just leave Bettie right upstairs after work and go out with my husband.” If you don’t now Bettie, she’s Brandy’s chihuahua and the

20

real star of the show. She acts as a greeter and store security guard and she takes her job very seriously. The location has much more usable space so Brandy can continue to expand her merchandise to include more greeting cards, candles, hostess gifts, women’s accessories, men’s gifts and baby clothes. She’ll continue to feature local Philadelphia based artists and hometown items including Philadelphia wine totes and neighborhood coaster. The big move will also give Brandy a fresh start. “Before, when I first walked in here, it was already set up as someone else’s vision,” Brandy said. “In the new space, it will be me starting from scratch with my own vision, designing where things will go and adding personal little touches I can do now that I own the property – like a black and white stripped awning I can’t wait to put up!” This isn’t The Little Apple first award, it’s been popping up on local and national lists for years. So far, The Little Apple has taken home Best of Philly – Best Gift Shop in 2010, Philly Happenings – Best Gift Shop in 2015, and USA Today’s Top 10 Best Shopping Destinations in Philadelphia in 2014. SHOP: BEST OF MANAYUNK Best New Store: Pineapple on Main

If you’ve ever walked down Main Street and caught yourself stopping at a beautifully designed window near the corner of Main and Grape, then you’ve found yourself at Pineapple on Main. If you’ve been inside and looked up – then the design in the tin ceiling surely caught your eye (bonus points for you if you noticed the same design featured in their logo). The new store, which opened its doors in April of 2015, is located right in the heart of Main Street in the historic building that A.I. Poland jewelers called home for over 100 years. Neighbors Gary and Norma Mann of Gary Mann Jewelers purchased and renovated the building bringing it back to its original charm with a fresh new look…and coat of paint. Originally opened as a hub for event management, owners Kathy Piccari and Taryn Rager have new plans for the beautiful space. As interior decorators by trade (they’re the ladies behind Harris & Tweed Interiors) they are migrating the space into a home décor and gift boutique with the back room still acting as a studio and office space for local creative’s. “When we first brought out interior design services here, our clientele in Manayunk started growing and we noticed that everyone needed home décor and we were running around trying to source product for them – pillows, blankets, accessories and kitchenware,” Kathy said. “So we decided to bring it here and expand our inventory.” Their home décor inventory now includes items from the beloved Shop Zestt collection (who once had a pop-up in the same space!) and other vendors including Kobo, Petit Pehr and Ollie Ella. Check out their blanket wall or pillow bookshelf to find the perfect accents for your living room or pick up a gold cheese knife set or fancy cloth napkin gift pack to bring to your next dinner party. They also feature local artists including Philadelphia based Urban Work Textiles whose Philly skyline canvas prints are new to the shop. We warn you though; you’ll never walk out of there without buying something for yourself too. Besides being a go to shop for home décor and hostess gifts, the store also acts as a community hub and event space, hosting seasonal

networking events, photo shoots and even comedy shows. And when you’re there, you’ll surely be offered a glass of wine in one of their signature Pineapple On Main etched wine glasses. Pineapple is in fact the international sign for hospitality, which is exactly what you get when you walk in the doors of Pineapple on Main, but it’s so much more Kathy said, “Not only does the pineapple represent hospitality, but they are also sweet on the inside, just like the interior of your home should be. Home is where the pineapple is.” Manayunk has also become home to both Kathy and Taryn. “Manayunk has been so overwhelmingly welcoming to us,” Taryn said. “Every single business owner here is willing to help us and share their experiences and it has truly become our home” Honorable Mention: Philadelphia Runner

Best Specialty Store: Main Street Music

4444 Main Street - 215-487-7732

What’s a specialty store? According to BusinessDictionary.com, a specialty store is, “a small retail outlet that focuses on selling a particular range (of product) and associated items.” In addition, they state that, “most specialty store business operators will maintain considerable depth in the type of product they specialize in selling.” I dare say it, but this perfectly articulates Main Street Music’s offering and role in the neighborhood. On the surface, they provide all things retail media, from vinyl to CDs and DVD to Blu-rays. But their story spans a lot wider than the storefront would suggest. Main Street Music’s front door has been witness to the ups and downs of Manayunk for more than two decades. They’ve been standing since the crowded late night crowds, picking up handfuls of CDs before hitting the bars, through the digital age of Napster and iTunes, and now to the slightly more eclectic, collector crowd that peruses vinyl. Main Street Music has been around for it all, keeping rhythm with the tempo changes of the city. Celebrating their 25th year in Manayunk this October, owner Pat Feeney recalls their first “tiny” location on Main Street where they first opened up shop, “it was probably half the size of our store now.” It 26

SHOP.indd 26

wasn’t until 1997 when they made the move to the other side of Main, across from the old Empress Theater building (which is actually the Loring Building Products warehouse). In our conversation, I learned that there was potential for it to reopen as a music venue years ago, with the most popular rumor being that Bowie himself would be the inaugural performance. Great stories like that, an on-the-ground history of Manayunk during my conversation w/ Pat and his trusted cohort Jamie Blood, defined on a cosmic level the importance and stature of a store like Main Street Music. Pat’s store has been a permanent neighborhood fixtu e in the previous as well as current era, adapting and evolving into something more than just a music store. Music is indispensable – show me a person who doesn’t like music and I will show you someone who can’t feel his or her soul. You don’t have to be an audiophile in order to have a favorite song or band. Music is universal, and the need for it within a community is as important as any public work, service, or mural. For 25 years now, Main Street Music has been beating a drum, having to change tune from time to time as the market dictates, but never truly losing the rhythm necessary for this town. Placed prominently on the first block from the Belmont/Green Bridge, they welcome all comers to Manayunk with a song. Honorable Mention: The Spiral Bookcase

Best Women’s Hair Salon: Salon L’Etoile

Being a Main Street resident for over twenty years, Salon L’Etoile is certainly a Manayunk staple. So, it comes as no surprise that they were voted Best Women’s Hair Salon. The salon is currently located on the second floor of 4360 Main Street, where it has called home since it first arrived in Manayunk, but come this Spring, they’re packing their bag (and hair brushes) and moving to the other end of Main Street. Their new spot at 4120 Main Street, which was the former home of Restoration Hardware, boasts a beautiful entrance and ground floor salon, so no more climbing steps for salon goers. Not only are they moving the salon, owner Michael O’Connor is rebranding the salon to be more cohesive with his North Wales location, the new name: Salon L. The new salon will still feature all the same amenities as their first location, but there are some exciting new features including ‘The Bar’, which will house makeup, eyebrows and a blow out bar. The salon will also feature a new color palette of cooler tones and natural mineralistic elements to match the design of the new space. The salon offers a wide array of services for their clients including the usual basic services of cuts and blow dries, on up to more specialized services such as Keratin Complex Straightening and both Great Lengths and Hotheads Hair Extensions. Salon L’Etoile treats all of their clients like celebrities, but some of them actually are. A few of their Philadelphia celebrity regulars include Tracy Davidson of ABC 10, Ashley Marie a QVC on-air host, and Manayunk Development Corporation’s’ own Board President Bruce Cooper. Salon manager, Meredith Hankins, who has worked at the salon for elev-

en years, said, “We also always strive to provide the best customer service in the business. We are very heavily invested in education and making sure that our staff is up to date on the latest technology and trends.” One such trend that sets them apart, is their service, Real Brows, which is a semi-permanent procedure that result is the perfect eyebrow. The first step is having one of their certified brow specialists shape and draw the client’s brows to the thickness they want to achieve. After that, they use a pen type device which holds a needle and embroiders single strokes in the new shape the client desires. After four weeks, the client comes back for a touch up which includes additional strokes of color to make their new brows look fuller & real. The results last 6 months to one year, depending on how well the client’s skin holds the ink. So if you’re looking to pamper your lovely locks, whether they be on the top of your head or even your eyebrows, head over to Salon L’Etoile. Between their killer current location, sure to be impressive new location, superior and highly educated friendly staff, and the host of amazing services they offer, you are sure to leave looking better than you did when you walked in, and with a beaming smile on your face.  Entrepreneur of the Year  Lenny Bazemore Lenny reflects on his past and Manayunk s future By Leo Leo Dillinger Dillinger By

T

here’s an old Japanese saying that goes, “A man is whatever room he is in right now.” When I interviewed Lenny Bazemore, he was seated in his office on the top floor of 4319 Main Street with the words Bazemore Enterprises LLC written on the wall behind him. From my vantage point, you would never guess this local developer and 2016 Manayunk Entrepreneur of the Year was once a high school dropout who spent most of his childhood in poverty. “Norristown makes some strong individuals,” Lenny said. “I grew up very poor. I often tell the story of me having to boil pots of water on the stove and carry it up to the bathtub and dump it in. I made at least ten trips so my father could bathe, then my mother bathed after him. Then I would bathe and then my younger sister in the dirtiest of water.” Despite these early memories of dirty bath water, limited kerosene heating in his house, and government food assistance, Lenny always seemed to harness the entrepreneurial spirit within him. At age 10, Lenny would take on additional paper routes in his neighborhood so he could hire his friends to form a more efficient delivery system. He acted as their manager, packaging papers, organizing addresses, and divvying up the pay at the end of the week. In eighth grade, he used to buy candy bars at the store and resell them at school for a few cents more. All in all, Lenny estimates to have worked roughly 75 jobs in his lifetime. “I’ve sold cemetery plots. That was a hard sell,” Lenny said with a laugh. “I worked on the back of a trash truck when I was 19. I worked in restaurants. I’ve worked construction. I worked cleaning offices, cleaning toilets. Anything I had to do to make ends meet, I was willing to try it.” Lenny traveled to Georgia for his grandmother’s funeral, where he stayed with his cousin, Rick. Rick had a huge house with a long driveway and a fancy car. Lenny asked his cousin how he got all of that and

Rick gave one simple answer: real estate. When asked by Lenny if he would make a good real estate agent, Rick replied, “As long as you have integrity, you can sell real estate.” Lenny took his suggestion to heart and earned his real estate license in 2002. He migrated to Center City the following year to recreate his life and has never looked back. While selling houses in the city, Lenny wanted to broaden his experience in one of his longtime passions: fine art. He began working as an art consultant at Galleria 1903 in 2007 and within a year, he was selling his own artwork out of his home. Lenny eventually moved to the Main Line with his wife, Teresa, and his kids. He then returned to school in 2011 to study Fine Art at Montgomery County Community College. Longing to establish his very own art gallery, Lenny felt that Manayunk would be the perfect fit with its small town charm and strategic location between Center City and the suburbs. This would be his gift to the neighborhood, giving Main Street the aura of art culture that it needed once more. By 2013, Lenny had transformed his first Manayunk property at 4339 Main Street into The Bazemore Gallery, his pride and joy. “I had the intention of coming here to purchase one building to put my gallery in and that’s it,” Lenny said. “I didn’t have aspirations of buying a bunch of properties until I saw that Manayunk was underdeveloped. So, once I noticed that it had this huge growth potential, I started to take a look at becoming an avid investor here.” Since opening the Bazemore Gallery, Lenny now owns a total of five Manayunk properties with two more potentially in the works. In the last year alone, Lenny has successfully opened The Juice Merchant, a healthy dining alternative dedicated to the athletic community of Manayunk, and a renovated office space located at the corner of Main Street and Cotton Street that serves as the headquarters for all three of his business Winter 2015 | manayunk.com 29

deavors, aptly named Bazemore Enterprises LLC. “I feel like Manayunk is going through a change from what it was 20 years ago,” Lenny said. “In its transition, it’s going to be a lot more sustainable. With the vast number of apartments coming here in addition to the new parking and the new developmental and entrepreneurial spirit, I believe Manayunk is going to be better than it ever has in its history and I believe all of these changes are going to happen within the next three years. As a matter of fact, I guarantee it.” Not only does Lenny believe Manayunk is changing. Manayunk has changed him as well. Being im- BEFORE mersed in an outdoorsy, athletic community like Manayunk forced Lenny to take a look at himself and make a change to become a more health-conscious individual. In the last six months, Lenny has lost an impressive 80 lbs and is feeling better than ever. The neighborhood has given Lenny a vast network of lasting bonds among residents and shop owners alike. He admires the reciprocation of honesty, respect, and support that come with these relationships and it’s truly given him a new perspective on life. Manayunk has consistently made Lenny want to become a better person. 30

AFTER

“I have this incredibly high level of awareness and I live from the heart. I think that everyone who knows me knows that and I’m glad that people are getting to know who I am. It’s just…” Lenny paused to gather his thoughts. “It’s just me and I want people to know that here in Manayunk you can be yourself. You don’t have to be anything else. Everyone is going to let you be yourself.” As for the future, Lenny remains increasingly optimistic in the resurgence of Manayunk. He encourages entrepreneurs of all backgrounds and career stages to consider opening up a business in the neighborhood so long as their purpose is to serve the betterment AFTER of this community. He wants to be a lifeline to any future business owners in Manayunk, offering advice on staying organized, having a business model, and not being afraid to fail. Lenny’s willing to give anyone his time so long as they buy him a cup of coffee. “I believe that Manayunk has given me a new life and I only want to inspire other people to follow their dreams, goals, and ambitions no matter what they are,” Lenny said. “Life is not about finding yourself. It’s about creating yourself. And if you are looking to create yourself, there’s no better place than Manayunk to do it.”

Best Burger:

Lucky’s Last Chance 4421 Main Street - 215-509-6005

Back in 2011 when Chris Barnes was getting ready to open Lucky’s Last Chance with his business partner, Mike Gartner, he noticed that bars entering the craft beer scene were either getting really fancy with their menus (putting foie gras on everything) or chucking out the same frozen burger patties. “No one was doing comfort food really well,” Chris said. “We very much wanted to offer great beer with all of the foods you’re familiar with, but to actually do them right. Make everything fresh. Use better ingredients. It just seemed more fun.” To zero in on quality, Chris and his staff deconstructed the burger. They inspected each ingredient — its purpose, structure, flavor — and pitted two brands at a time against each other, in a series of face-offs. “We spent weeks pondering the structural integrity of the meat-to-roll ratio,” Chris said. Until finally, a winner emerged: Liscio’s Bakery rolls, which maintain the perfect amount of sturdiness and crispness, even after being butter-toasted. “There’s literally nothing worse than for the roll to be so mushy that it kind of falls apart. Or finishing a burger and having a hunk of roll left.” Chris then teamed with his trusted butcher, Lancaster County’s Carl Venezia, to test 15 blends of meat before selecting Lucky’s one-of-akind blend. “Everything we serve here is fresh. We have never frozen a burger patty in history,” Chris said. “We also make our sauces and spreads from scratch. There is so much work, thought, and effort that goes into ensuring the quality of our product in every single burger.” With gourmet ingredients in place and a comfort food theme, Chris and his staff have created an inventive menu that satisfies every childhood craving. There’s the best-selling Mak Attack, a burger topped with cheese, a heaping pile of mac & cheese … and then more cheese. Then, 32

DINE.indd 32

there’s the trophy-winning and “unexpectedly delicious” PB & Bacon, a burger topped with creamy peanut butter, American cheese, and thickcut bacon, and served with a side of house-made jelly, which won the 2013 Third Annual Burger Brawl People’s Choice Award. The truth, though, is that every burger on Lucky’s menu is a people’s choice winner. “Our customers dictate everything,” Chris said. “When we’re taste-testing in the kitchen, we bring out samples, and whoever is sitting at the bar that day, we turn into guinea pigs.” Every January, Lucky’s holds a Burger Battle Royal, “the WrestleMania of our Burgers of the Month,” Chris explained. “Our customers vote on which of the 12 burgers we’ve done the past year that they like the most. The top two go on our menu for the month, and every time one gets ordered, that counts as a vote. The winner becomes a permanent part of our menu.” Up next, Chris is taking on a new challenge. “This summer, the focus is on our hot dogs,” he said. “We have regular customers that have been in 100 times and never had our hot dogs. Then all of the sudden, they try one and that’s all they order for the next six months. We’re always going to be a burger place. This is just about shedding some light on a product that’s currently the stepchild to the burger, but that we think is equally as good.” Winning the Burger Brawl back in 2013 put Lucky’s on the map, yet the bar still often feels like Manayunk’s best-kept secret, turning up on Thrillist.com’s Most Criminally Underrated Restaurants in Philly and 8 Best Under-the-Radar Burgers. “I could not pick a better spot for us to be,” Chris said of Lucky’s low-key status. “People ask us why we aren’t submitting for this-or-that food show. But there comes a point where if you tip the scale, your regular customers can’t find a place to sit. At the end of the day, we’re Manayunk. We cater to our neighbors. And we don’t want to lose that small-town charm.” Honorable Mention: Manayunk Tavern

DINE: BEST OF MANAYUNK Best Cocktail Selection: The Goat’s Beard When The Goat’s Beard owner Sean Coyle, returned to Manayunk after working her in his early career, he knew he had to come back with a bang. We could go on and on about their sustainable domestic small plate menu, but we’re here to talk cocktails and they’ve got the best selection around. How do you win an award voted on by your community for best cocktail selection in a district full of establishments known for great cocktails? Well, a good place to start is having the mother of all whiskey lists, it’s actually called ‘The Whiskey Bible,’ and is renowned not only in Philadelphia, but throughout the state. It also doesn’t hurt to have this list representative of the best whiskeys the United States, Canada, Ireland, and Scotland have to offer, including such rare gems as Glenfiddich Age Of Discovery 19 year. It also helps when these amazing brown liquids are the base to some killer cocktails. Their namesake cocktail, The Goat’s Beard, takes 9 Rye Whiskey and pairs it nicely with a quartered lemon, mint, and a bit of house-made simple syrup on the rocks. The outcome is the perfect adult beverage to enjoy along with their infamous Steak Mac & Cheese. But, The Goat’s Beard doesn’t stop at whiskey when it comes to their stellar cocktail selection. If you’re more of a tequila person, their 30 Day Strawberry is a must try! For a mere $9 you’ll be sipping on a coction of goat-infused strawberry tequila, agave lime, house-made sour on the rocks with a garnish of lime. More of a traditional cocktail with a twist fan? If that’s the case, give their Manhattan, with rye whiskey, Carpano Antica, Angostura bitters and Amarena cherry, or their Cucumber Gimlet, with Hendrick’s gin, house-made lime cordial, muddle cucumber and club soda a try. Looking for a substitute for dessert? Look no further than the High Point Karamel Coffee. It is happiness in a glass, made with the marriage of 9 High Point cold brew coffee, basil, orange bitters, Stoli Salted Kara-

mel, cream and just in case it wasn’t sweet enough, a little simple syrup joins this party too. Their seasonal cocktail menu is always just what you’re in the mood for that last hour of work on a Friday, let’s just say there’s something for everyone. If you need a suggestion on a plate to accompany your cocktail, just ask the staff. They are always more than happy to share their latest favorite food and cocktail pairing with guests, and it always comes with a complimentary smile. Is it too early to have a cocktail now!? Nah, I’ll save you a seat at The Goat’s Beard’s bar! Honorable Mention: Craft Manayunk

DINE: BEST OF MANAYUNK Best Healthy Food Menu:

The Couch Tomato has been a part of Manayunk for more than a decade, providing pizza, salads, and sandwiches to locals and visitors. When I worked in close proximity to the Rector Street location, I relied on the variety of their menu to get me through the week. It was there that I grew to love the food, reveling in the idea that I didn’t need to scarf down another hoagie or fried doo-dad for lunch. The more impressive aspects of Couch’s tenure here, though, have been their ability to adapt to the consumer and keep it a healthier option. “We try to keep up with the trends,” explains Sam Carchidi, the Marketing and Sales Representative for The Couch Tomato locations in Manayunk,West Chester, and their sister eatery, The Tomato Bistro. “People are calling for healthier living and healthier eating, and that is definitely something we’re listening to…and we don’t stop there.” Having started working at Couch as a delivery driver years ago, Sam’s role has evolved just as steadily as the restaurant’s style and menu. Established in 2003, The Couch Tomato wasn’t content with being just another by-the-slice operation. “When they first opened here, they tried to be a late night pizza place. The owners were the ones at the counter making the pizza and they were like, this is a terrible idea,” Sam relayed anecdotally while talking about what makes Couch different. Experiments like trying late night hours helped mold Couch into the community restaurant it is today - listening to their consumers’ desires. “Everyone wants to eat from someplace that shops local and organic, so that’s where we’re going now… even our [fountain] soda is from a local distributor and fair trade certified,” he adds to illustrate their level of commitment to quality food. So know that even when indulging in a large pizza with however many people you are (or aren’t) sharing it

with (no judgment), one can take comfort in the quality of ingredients adorning the perfectly baked (optionally gluten free) crust. Not content to rest on their laurels, The Couch Tomato is currently experimenting with vegan versions of menu staples. Listening to Sam describe a vegan version of their classic Tomato Basil soup made me excited, and I don’t even possess those dietary restrictions. He explained, “I took a bowl home and I wasn’t convinced that it was the right one.” Sam’s doubt was strong enough that he waited anxiously for the next few hours to see if the phantom dairy flavor was going to affect his lactose sensitive system. “A few hours later, the next day, I’m feeling fine and it tasted exactly the same” You can’t argue with a recipe that can fool such an ingrained regular, and with nothing but flavo . The Couch Tomato is always evolving and we’re the ones who benefit Honorable Mention: Smiley’s Café

Best New Restaurant:

Anastasi & Franzone’s Pizzeria 4161 Main Street - 215-482-1800 / 114 Levering Street - 215-508-1050

It’s a tie! Anastasi and Frazone’s Pizzeria which both opened their doors in 2015, were a tie score for Best New Restaurant, which comes as no surprise as both have been welcomed to Manayunk with open arms. At first glance, one might think that our Best New Restaurant winners don’t have much in common, save for serving food. Anastasi Raw Bar is a speciality seafood restaurant and Frazone’s is a homemade pizzeria. However, when you take a closer look, these two winning establishments have more in common than the number of votes they both received from our Best of Manayunk voters. Both are not just new restaurants to Manayunk, they are also well known names that are deeply rooted in tradition, family values, and Philadelphia heritage. If the name Anastasi sounds familiar to you, it might be because of the South Philly mainstay, Anastasi Seafood, which has been a family owned operation for over a century. Anastasi Raw Bar is run by fifth-generation

members of the Italian Market’s Anastasi Seafood clan, brother and sister duo Thomas and Mia Anastasi, along with their partner Frank Kemp. They are doing what their family does best, serving the freshest seafood and fish possible in a welcoming yet hip atmosphere. This location boasts an exquisite roof-top deck that plays host to their outdoor Raw Bar. Don’t worry, they have plenty of heaters outside just in case Spring plays any tricks on us. Franzone’s might also have been a familiar name before diving into the first bite of their magical pizza. This family owned restaurant is in its 3rd generation and since 1955, have served customers their secret recipe pizza at other Philly locations before bringing it to Manayunk. The Manayunk location is run by Charles Franzone, a Philadelphia native, who literally grew up in the family business. “My dad has the Franzone’s located in Plymouth Meeting, and he basically raised my sister and I there. Every day after school, I would go to that Franzone’s and do my homework,” Charles said. They take their traditions one step further by utilizing some of the same vendors for the last 60 years! So whether you’re in the mood for fresh seafood or piping hot pizza, you’ll be served a side of family traditions at either of our Best N ew Restaurants in Manayunk. No Honorable Mention – Tie

DINE: BEST OF MANAYUNK Best Wine Selection: Jake’s and Cooper’s

The moment you enter Bruce Cooper’s award-winning Main Street restaurant, your eyes will be drawn to the gorgeous wine wall behind the bar that spans all the way up to the ceiling. And if you point up to one of the bottles — say, the Collegiata Montepulciano 2014 from Italy — Elenor Patafio, who has been a manager at Jake’s and Cooper’s for 24 years, will describe the wine to you in such detail, you’ll wonder whether she just had it yesterday. “Oh, that wine has a really good nose. You can really smell the berries, specifically the cherries. It has a really full body, it’s even a little jammy, and it’s a bold wine — you can almost smell it and taste it at the same time.” And if you ask her what food to pair it with, she’ll suggest a light fish or salmon, preferably the Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes with the lemon thyme beurre blanc sauce. “It’s just a wonderful pairing,” she’ll say. Jake’s and Cooper’s couldn’t be a top-rated wine bar without such a well-trained and passionate staff. So naturally, owner Bruce Cooper makes wine education a top priority. “There is no wine that we put on the list without everyone tasting it,” Bruce said. “We have classes and we test. In the test, each waiter has to give a description of the wine, and list the grape varietal, the country, and the region. If you’re a starting server here, you’re going to drink 25 wines before you’re allowed to work.” Bruce meticulously handpicks wine labels from around the world, curating a list with a variety of complexities that includes both New and Old World labels. “I taste everything,” Bruce said. “I deal with 12 wine purveyors. I only have a handful of people I can count on to bring me their best stuff. A lot of other purveyors have these huge books the size of a Bible of what they’d sell you. I tell my wine purveyors, bring me what you would put in your own place. I try to pick only those wines that are small production, organic, or hand-harvested preferred.” Jake’s and Cooper’s full wine selection consists of 107 bottles—27 sold by the glass, 80 sold by the bottle. Their glasses start at $8, and work up

to $15. He takes great pride in creating a list that offers patrons both expensive and high-value options. “We probably have the cheapest bottle in the city, and we buy a lot of it,” Bruce said of their best-selling house white wine, Villa Santa, Portugal. “A standard pour in the city, in most cases, is 5 ounces. Except for us. Here, we have larger glasses, so you’re getting a 6-ounce pour. So if you have a glass of wine that’s $8, you’re getting 20 percent more here. It’s technically $2 cheaper.” If there’s one word Bruce would use to describe his wine list, it’s drinkable. “Here, the wine is at the right temperature for starters. The reds are refrigerated. Most restaurants don’t have a refrigerator for the reds, so in the summer you’re drinking a 70-degree bottle. You’re tasting the alcohol, not the fruit. Here, our reds are 56 degrees, which is exactly the right temperature. Second, when I go out, I like to go to the places where I know I can count on their wine selections. People can count on all of our wines to represent the exact varietal that it is meant to be.” Honorable Mention: Anastasi Raw Bar

Best Fitness Studio:

The Wall Cycling Studio 107 Cotton Street - 267-336-7928

When first timers walk into The Wall Cycling Studio’s beautiful new space on Cotton Street they’re unaware of the studio’s humble beginnings, in a 500 square foot space on Levering Street, that longtime clients remember all too well. It was in those tiny walls that owner Julie Sabella began a movement – a Manayunk cycling movement that is. The studio was named of course after its first location, which sat right at the base of the Manayunk Wall – the famous vertical climb that international cyclists take each summer during the Philadelphia Cycling Classic (or as locals call it, The Manayunk Bike Race). In fact, Julie opened her studio Bike Race weekend in June of 2012 and quickly caught the attention of long time cyclists and new enthusiasts. Even before her Manayunk studio made the big move just a few blocks over this past February, Julie had her eye on other expansions. 42

PLAY.indd 42

In September 2015, she opened another studio space in Phoenixville, expanding her reach further into the Philadelphia suburbs. Though cycling was Julie’s first love, she has since found a new love with barre. The minute she took her first barre class, Julie knew that there was a place for “Barre In The Wall” because the workout was a great combination with her cycling and spin and sculpt classes. She first launched barre at her Phoenixville location, but it’s safe to say that Julie has been eager to bring barre to Manayunk as well. The new two story 3000 square foot studio houses cycling on the first floor for Indoor Cycling and Spin & Sculpt classes and the top floor has a large room for Barre classes and a smaller room for private training sessions and Baby Bjourn Barre for local mom’s and their little ones – and yes there’s even a mini barre for toddlers to practice with while mom gets a workout in. Its light grey walls, modern architecture and soft and simple décor make the new studio feel like a spa. Unlike her original space, the new space has three bathrooms,

each with showers, and plenty of room for riders or barre goers to get ready for class. Original clients fondly remember crouching in place to take off their sweatpants or change their shoes in the tiny studio entry. Julie and her team of instructor’s work to create an environment that allows the 20 clients they have in each class to train at their own pace. “Everyone’s intensity and experience level is different,” Julie said. “We will be intense in motivating you and wanting to push you a gear or two higher on our bikes or with barre we will motivate you to sink your seat a little lower or raise your toes higher. Our instructors will help you push through it and motivate you, but not dictate – it’s your workout.” Even if you’ve never taken a class with Julie, though we urge you to try, you’ve probably seen her around town with her husband Karl and their fur children Brooklyn and Hudson (which explains the mini French Bulldog statues you’ll spot throughout her new studio space).
