ACCESS ALL AREAS Access All Areas brings together a range of student-led educational volunteer projects in the local community. All of our projects have the same aim - to improve access and widen participation in education. Manchester Outreach Medics: We run events for sixth formers from disadvantaged backgrounds, giving them the information and skills required to achieve a place in medical school. Reading Mentors: Reading Mentors is a project that tackles inequalities in the education system by supporting children with their reading. Code Club: Every Wednesday STEMSoc volunteers from our group get a ride together to Green End Primary School. We introduce the class to coding challenges with Scratch. Consider Postgrad: An outreach project designed to encourage students from disadvantaged backgrounds to learn more about postgraduate opportunities from current students. 32
LIGHTSS: We tutor students from local secondary schools in Maths, English, and Science in weekly sessions to get the most out of their GCSEs. Funfair: Funfair is a day full of different activities aimed at primary school children, ranging from arts and crafts to CPR, to help them develop new skills. Travelab: STEMSoc members run interactive, hands-on activities at local libraries, to inspire, engage and create discussion with the local public, particularly primary school aged children. Lunchtime Study Space: To provide a relaxed environment for all students in years 10 and 11 to study and receive drop-in tuition at lunchtime - free from teachers and parents. MIPS: Inspires primary school students to consider a career in Science and Medicine. Teach weekly lessons to local primary schools, particularly schools in deprived areas. MedReach: An online e-mentoring platform in which mentees (prospective medical students) can talk to medical students. If you’d like to volunteer with Access All Areas please contact: volunteering.su@manchester.ac.uk
