Program Notes Transformation is a broad concept which has various meaning in different fields. In mathematics, it can refer to the original configuration of an object changed by means of rotation, reflection, and translation, dilation, and compression, etc. In biology, it refers to the process in which a gene is transferred from one cell to another cell, resulting that the genetic materials of the new cell have different codes. The music describes the conceptual process in that different parameters are changed such as the number of pitches, pitch’s space, rhythm, pulse, density, and gestures, etc. In the opening, only one pitch is emphasized and gradually different pitches are developed by means of addition and deletion as well as chromatic and diatonic interplay between pitches in different transpositional levels. The central section is highly contrasted by sparse textures in which the music exhibits meditative character; however, more often than not the original motivic material at the beginning constituting particular set-classes is conserved albeit in different pitch-class space. The last section recapitulates the similar sounding and gestures of the first section, however, pitches are grouped in sextuplets. Generally speaking, the piece is characterized by minimalistic styles in which repetition of figures are the central features.

Performance Notes:
Throughout the whole piece, rhythmic accuracy is not important and thus it needs not to be 100% accurately executed, while a sense of particular impulse in different grouping of pitches only needs to be maintained in a continuous manner, and thus abrupt halts could be avoided as much as possible, ensuring that a sense of flow could be achieved. Dotted barlines in the whole piece only serve as a means of approximate orientation, and they are not intended for emphasizing regular meter and pulsation. Pochissimo indicates any tiny gradual increasing or decreasing in dynamics. In m. 95, multiphonic sound is employed with the relevant fingering. From m. 133 towards the end, key click sound is employed. All quarter tones need not to be executed as accurate as possible, but somehow could have some deviation with the usual semitone. All fp could be executed precisely with some exaggeration: suddenly loud and then immediately soft. All glissando could be slided microtonally, evenly, and smoothly within the relevant duration between two notes. All sharps and flats of the same pitches within the same bar are in effect unless being cancelled by natural accidental sign.
