Program Notes The piece is inspired by the post-modern minimalistic artwork titled Big Yellow Circle. The whole piece is casted into three parts, in which the first and last part share some stylistic and gestural similarities-incessantly flow of pitches in a continuum manner, yet being characterized by substantial transformations in terms of rhythmic figures and pitches contributing to different color and sound effects, when two layers pulsating and driving continuously. The middle part contrasts with the outer parts in that a variety of gestures are used—lone-line melodic gestures, abrupt dramatic figure, and tender harmonics. Subsequently, audiences can experience different sorts of musical expressivities, characters, and feelings. Generally speaking, the violin part symbolizes the outer larger yellow circle whereas the bass part symbolizes the inner smaller dark circle; the music describes the imaginational interaction between the two circles---juxtaposition, connection, and entangling with each other in different time and space in effect. Performance Notes: The double bass adopts the standard tuning in the piece (E1, A1, D2, G2)
Throughout the whole piece, dotted barlines in the whole piece only serve as a means of approximate orientation, and are not intended for emphasizing regular meter and pulsation. From bars 1-25, one could try to maintain rhythmic flow between two parts in a continuous manner ensuring that a sense of flow could be achieved while 100% rhythmic accuracy is not necessary. The togetherness of the two parts could be ensured by the first downbeat of each bar after the dotted bar line. From bars 65-88, the two parts need not to be rhythmically synchronized with each other. Each part needs to repeat the particular figure by means of the extended beam lines. The violin part is to be played as fast as possible or each note is more or less approximately equal to the demisemiquaver duration. The double bass part should play the note values more or less equal to semiquaver and sextuplets as indicated. The number of repeated times of each figure has been indicated in the score and thus, the violin part needs to listen to the bass: if the bass has changed the figure in the next bar, then the violin needs to begin the next figures. All dynamics marking and articulations in detail such as sfffz, fp, accent and tenuto markings could be executed precisely with some exaggeration. All sharps and flats of the same pitches within the same dotted bar are in effect unless being cancelled by natural accidental sign. The accidentals of the same pitch-classes in different octaves (e.g. C4 with C5#, thus C4 remains natural) within a bar should not affect the other unless indicated. All quarter tones need not to be executed as accurate as possible, but somehow could have some deviation with the usual semitone. All glissando between harmonics could be executed smoothly and microtonally within the total duration between notes.
