Because of this, we would like to book a regular monthly advert in Lifestyle Monthly Magazine... LIVERPOOL IS THE UK’S FRIENDLIEST CITY Readers of leading leisure magazine Condé Nast Traveller have voted Liverpool as the UK’s Friendliest City for a second successive year. Sarah Miller, Editor of Condé Nast Traveller, commented: “Readers just love Liverpool. They think it’s the friendliest city with very hospitable people and also great value for money.” The 2011 awards have also seen Liverpool retain its position as the 4th Favourite UK City for the second successive year, ranking only behind London, Edinburgh and Bath. TMP Chief Executive Lorraine Rogers commented:“This is a fantastic acknowledgement for Liverpool. Anecdotally Liverpool is often known for its friendly welcome and the warmth of its people – but for this to be officially recognised by readers of one of the leading and most discerning travel magazines for the second year running is a major accolade for the destination. This is a tribute to the taxi drivers, tour guides, hoteliers and everyone who works in the Visitor Economy.

“We have a great range of world class venues, attractions and hotels which appeal to leisure and business visitors and this asset combined with the warmth of the people and the welcome we give visitors which encourages them to spread the word about what a great time they’ve had. The people of Liverpool are one of our important assets and this award is a very special endorsement.” Liverpool City Region’s Visitor Economy currently generates visitor spend of £2.8billion and is estimated to support approximately 41,000 jobs a year.

CHURCH STREET, LIVERPOOL

classy RAGS WIN!!

a bespoke dress designed by Davina Maude Hawthorne Davina was born Davina Maude Hawthorne in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England in Oct 1974. Wanting to be that little bit different from the crowd she was always cutting up old clothes and turning them into something wonderful. Little did she know that this was the start of her career. She later moved to Salisbury then to Winchester to study Fashion and Textiles and was awarded a BA Hons. Onwards she went to London where she worked as a fashion designer - pattern cutter for high street brands. After her work experience she decided to go back to University with the help of a bursary she got her MA in Design for Textile Futures at Central St Martin’s School of Art and Design, one of England’s most renowned design schools. In 2002 she was awarded the Clerkenwell Green Award to set up her own design studio. Since setting up on her own she has created one off womenswear for various clients and has been commissioned for various projects. Her specialism became fashion & textile design incorporating recycled & hand - made detailing. Later as the word spread clients would bring everything from vintage fabric to old pieces of lace. They would then be made into alternative wedding dresses or accessories for special occasions. Before she knew it she was being sponsored to show her work at Esthetica at London Fashion Week which was a

new area set up to showcase sustainable and ethical design. More recently Davina’s work has been noted to have more emphasis on textiles, texture and print design. Her work is often made to measure, feminine sophisticated and glamorous. Her designs are comfortable, easy to wear and often adaptable to different body shapes.

Davina’s other projects have included designing and creating fashion awards out of old glass bottles to textile prediction books for the UN to promote African textiles. 2011 took Davina to Rome where she was invited to showcase her work at ‘The Queen’s Birthday Party - Green is the new black exhibition’ for the British Embassy in Rome at Villa Wolkonsky which then went on to La Rinascente department store & Alta Roma Haute Couture Week. Davina has also recently dressed Veronica Webb. Veronica chose one of Davina’s designs from the Talenthouse Competition. The dress was worn at the Red Carpet Event for the 50th anniversary of the Vanidades magazine, attended by Corine Roitfeld of French Vogue, Andre Leon Tally of American Vogue, The Limited and Carolina Herrera. Davina has recently set up her own online boutique selling her own womenswear label. She collaborates with numerous boutiques & organisations to create exciting fashion surgery events whereby the customer can commission & have something specially made to measure. Alison Hammond

As Lifestyle magazine sponsors Liverpool FashionWeek, we're delighted to chat to one of its hosts,TV presenter and realityTV star,Alison Hammond.

Many thanks for hosting LFW one night, we are thrilled to have you. What do you love about fashion? What I love about fashion is that you can become anyone you want to be. One day you can choose 'business woman' style, the next day 'party', 'casual' etc. But me personally, I like to be called Glam Ham!! You have never felt the pressure to starve yourself or diet which is very refreshing.. what is your message to others? My message to people is to be who you want to be and as long as you feel comfortable within yourself then don't feel pressure from others to change. LFW is about fashion for everyone, we don't want fashion to be Intimidating. Fashion is a state of mind, so be who you want to be. Where do you like to shop? I like to shop online, it's so easy. Evans, Anna Sholz and Yoursclothing.co.uk, H&M Describe your style It depends on my mood. Normally I'm casual glam with lots of bright colours! What are you looking forward to the most about coming to Liverpool? I'm looking forward to meeting the people and checking out the fashion! So you shot to fame after BB - why did you apply to go on the series? Because I was quite interested in winning 70k to pay off my loan! Did you ever imagine it would change your life? After 2 weeks I was evicted, so I was looking forward to going back to my normal job working in the cinema and then 'This Morning' came knocking which was amazing! Are you watching the current series Yes! It's brilliant! Brian is doing a fantastic job.

What do you love the most about tv presenting? What I love the most is being able to be myself and ask the questions I really want to! Who have you got star struck over when interviewing them? Most recently Gary Barlow, because he's quite hot! What do you think of the celebrity culture? I think it's very fickle and I think you have to have something about you to have longevity. What has been your favourite reality tv show? Would have to be 'Strictly Come Dancing' Why did you go on Im A Celebrity? It was a challenge and Gino did it the year before and said it was really good fun! What is your most memorable moment in your career so far? So far it was Big Brother, because it was all SO new to me.. What are your plans for the future? To continue the way things are going and enjoying every moment.. doing more of the same.. a lot more to come from me! Will you be writing a book? Who knows, maybe.. ask my agent! If I do.. trust me it would be good, I have some great stories! What are your plans for Christmas? I'm doing panto in Clacton on Sea playing 'fairy godmother' in Snow White, Clacton here I come! What is your ideal job? My ideal job would be to star in a Hollywood movie with the biggest trailer going! Tell us something about yourself that no-one knows? I've got an allotment. You are always so happy, what makes you grumpy? I try to make the most of life it has its ups and downs and trust me, I get grumpy as well.. it's normally when someone's not been nice! Where do you see yourself in 10 years I see myself ten years older, ten years wiser and ten times richer! 11

hoosing a name for a children’s designer fashion boutique that is contemporary and modern, rather than young and childish, is not an easy task – but BOYMEETSGIRL certainly hits the nail on the head! Clare King founded BOYMEETSGIRL to compromise between the parents’ request for good-quality, durable clothing, and the child’s desire for en-trend, fashionable pieces. Clare has worked hard, selecting pieces from such fashion houses as Chloe, Ralph Lauren, Lili Gaufrette, Petit Bateau, Monnalisa, D&G Junior and Scotch & Soda, all of which have been chosen precisely because of their effortless combination of beautiful designs and highquality, durable garments. What makes BOYMEETSGIRL so unique is the carefully thought-out blend of different brands, hand-picked to bring together a collection which keeps the individual child in mind. The clothing is not chosen by collection alone, but is considered for the occasions for which children would like to wear these beautiful garments, from parties to the park, from holidays to a family get-together. As a mother of two fashion-conscious boys, Clare knows her target market extremely well! Clare’s favourite brand for this Autumn/Winter is Junior Gaultier. It has refused to submit to the dull and boring greys and blacks that so often infest the wardrobe as the temperature drops, but instead has some great fun, bright colours combined with contemporary styles to suit all ages! BOYMEETSGIRL supports the ethos that youngsters need guidance to help create a confident, flattering appearance to really grow as individuals. Clare King says: “I buy with great care and I love all the clothes I buy. If my passion can come over to the customer and entice them to buy something, then even better!”

Dan’s our man....

he’s scouting for models on behalf of the UK’s top modelling agencies... It’s been a busy old few months again in the world of fashion. August and September have seen me based in St Tropez on the Cote d’Azur where I had a working holiday helping some new designers launch their brands (watch this space) and a family wedding. Then of course there is London Fashion Week at the end of September and then the grand finale of the year, LIVERPOOL FASHION WEEK in October!! I can’t wait. Sadly I couldn’t make the open call for Liverpool Fashion Weeks modelling contest but Amanda Moss, Editor of Lifestyle Monthly and team have chosen some really great models, which I can’t wait to meet and chat

too. These two models, Jordan and Sophie are just two of our winners, so come down and see us between the 18th and 22nd October. Don’t forget....I’ll be at Liverpool Fashion Week looking out for the next big talent that I can show major agencies in London i.e. NEXT, Elite and Select etc. If you think you have what it takes and you are female and at least 5’8” or male and at least 6’1” with a look you think I might like then please come along to fashion week OR email me at dan219@tesco.net

OK...shopping time...

For some the transition from summer in to winter is a sad affair, putting to bed the memories of the family holiday, late nights out at the bars with friends and the ‘all and sundry’ bbq’s. Too most however, it can only mean one thing.....SHOPPING!! Yes, that’s right; it’s your excuse to layering that little bit more, hunting for that chic new winter coat and changing that colour palette one more time. Don’t totally leave summer behind by continuing to inject some colour in to your autumn/winter wardrobe. This simple but stunning shift dress by River Island gives a smart look with its red zip detail and back zip fastening, ideal for work with a pair of flat loafers. Or why not wear it for a night out?! Sex it up with a pair of black tights and a pair of devilishly sexy Criblez Suede Metal Heel Ankle Boots by ALDO. Let’s not forget us men in your shopping trips ladies. After all, we’ll be much more forgiving about your extravagance if you were to pull us something out of your money bags. For the third year running, Fair Isle patterns are going to dominate the catwalks and high streets for A/W 2011 and are bang on trend. So what is Fair Isle? Well as not to bore you with the details, simply think, awesomely cool granny knit and you won’t be too far off. Layer up with this blue long sleeve fair-Isle jumper perfect for trans-seasonal dressing. This trend is so versatile you can dress it with dark wash jeans or even re-use some of those Carpenter chino’s you brought for the summer.

Heeled Ankle Boots – ALDO £130

Loafers – River Island £30

Dress – River Island £35

Not forgetting the shoes, finish the look stylishly and without fuss by choosing some ‘suede’ desert boots.

Desert Boots H&M - £29.99

Jumper River Island £36.00

‘Rust’ Chino’s River Island £48.00

SOUTHPORT

Lifestyle's classic column...with Janet Marsh

H

ow exciting is October? We are all so giddy about Liverpool Fashion Week, and Southport is no exception. Lots of boutiques from this area are featured so looking forward to seeing their wares. One of my favourites is Marc Cain who is situated in Lord Street, just next to The Vincent Hotel. Definitely worth a little look. They also held a fashion show at the Vincent showcasing some gorgeous items so can’t wait to see what they will show at LFW. The Sweetie Factory www.sweetiefactory.com was lucky enough to be asked by OK magazine to provide a Candy Buffet and Dessert Table for Alex Gerrard’s Baby Shower at The Vincent Hotel. Mum-to-be Alex Gerrard was joined by friends, family and famous faces as she celebrated her baby shower. The colour scheme was shades of lemon, green, pink and blue pastels with the décor and the sweets all matching. The ladies were in cupcake and sweet heaven with pastel macaroons, iced baby biscuits, Pram shaped white and dark chocolate, fresh cream truffles and all their favourite sweets to take home. What a great afternoon and we will also be at the closing night of Liverpool Fashion Week, Saturday 22 October at The Marriott in Liverpool with our fashion inspired Sweetie and Dessert Table. You will be able to purchase some goodies to keep you going throughout the fantastic shows. For further information see our website www.sweetiefactory.com or our facebook page www. facebook.com/sweetiefactory or give me a ring on 07798912572. SWL Woman’s Network is a growing network of women in business and woman business owners in the Sefton and West Lancashire areas. They hold some great networking events and their Business Awards on the 7th of October looks set to be a corker!! Check out their details on www.swlnetwork.co.uk Many businesses are created and organised around the every-day needs of family life. The hours worked are outside of the normal business hours and the place of work is within the home environment. The winners of these awards will offer insight as to how their business operates successfully. Arbonne products who are run locally by Sandra Carney had a girly event featuring Arbonne fabulous makeup and skincare. On the evening one lucky lady got to be made up and then she featured in a live before and after photo shoot! So much fun!! There was a guest appearance from the wonderful Cachét Shoes who brought along some Autumn/ Winter shoes, boots and bags to try on! To be a hostess of an Arbonne Skincare & Cosmetics party and receive a free gift! Call or text Sandra on 07802 789306. And now that I think that autumn is definitely on its way, you definitely need to be getting the new season UGGs on your feet from Cachet Designer footwear in Union Street, or online, they are some fab styles coming in and they will go fast so get your name down for them. THORNTON HALL HOTEL & SPA

in Neston in the Wirral has won 3 AA Rosettes.

We chatted exclusively to David Gillmore, Executive Chef on his remarkable achievement David took on the role as Executive Chef 18 months ago. Previously he worked at the Chester Grosvenor. What was your biggest challenge? To get people to my way of thinking. I came from a five star hotel with a Michelin star restaurant, I wanted to maintain a high level of standards for chefs. What is your ethos in the kitchen? I feel that I run a relaxed kitchen, which not many chefs are known for that! But I want people to want to enjoy coming to work because then they will be more creative and produce a better quality of work. How important is it for you to source local produce.

I definitely support this. The furthest we buy from is North Wales, but that is on our doorstep. There's masses of the finest ingredients grown locally in our region. What spurs you on at work? I have always wanted to be a chef, I enjoyed working with food as a child and when I was at school I took the decision that I wanted to go down this route and I have worked my way up. It's a great achievement. What do you love about working at Thornton Hall? The fact that it is an amazing independent hotel means that I am almost working for myself and not a chain of hotels that is led by lots of people internally. I have more of a free role to be creative here and that is what drove me to get the 3 Rosettes. Do you have a signature dish? People always ask me that and I say, what is that? Every dish has my signature on it!If you're asking me what my favourite recipe is then I would have to say that I tend to swerve to deserts because I have a sweet tooth. But I like making everything. What is the best thing about your role? I can push boundaries and create what I want. My job is very interesting and I am fortunate to work with a great team of people, all of whom are as keen as I am. How do you feel about winning 3 Rosettes? You are the only hotel in Merseyside to have achieved that. Nervous really because now I have to keep that high standard. I am confident in what I do and I am extremely proud of it, I never expected it. You never know when the judges are going to come and visit the hotel so for them to bestow 3 Rosettes on us is great. But I feel more pressure now to go one step even better and improve the dishes even more.

ayur Indian restaurant on Duke Street has won numerous awards, and it’s easy to see AND taste why. It’s got to be one of the cleanest and slickest indian restaurant I’ve ever eaten in. The food offers a fantastic variation of flavours from north to south india. Myself and my dining partner, Mr Joseph Orr of Escape Hospitality Events were presented with an amazing platter to start with, including a goan marinated salmon, mildly spiced and baby lamb chops Punjabi style, marinated in yogurt and typical north indian spices. Also on the platter were very traditional handmade samosas, and baby chicken tikka legs, and not forgetting the Bombay aloo potato cake flavoured with cashew nuts. This was definitely a huge platter and a fine example of the exquisite food served at Mayur.

with ground coriander and chillies. I would say that this would be a medium spice. We then had a chicken murg methi palak, this was spicy- with a real kick - cooked with onions fenugreek and mixed peppers. I recommend this to be eaten with Mayurs tandoori roti bread. The third dish was tender kind prawns in a tomatoey curry topped with spring onions, all washed down with an ice cold kingfisher lager. My mouths watering once again just writing this review. The Mayur really is a far cry from your average curry house, it has so much panache with excellent attentive service. Whether you are looking for a lunch time treat or a celebratory meal, the Mayur has to be top of your list of restaurants to visit. It’s also a favourite haunt for the curry loving celebrities. If you even book well in advance, I recommend putting a request into the proprietor Arrif, then he himself cooks you his special staff curry - this has to be tasted to be believed.

We took a break between the starter platter and main course and it was at the point Mr Orr informed me the it was his first Indian meal, this can only be likened to Lifestyle Monthly red hot world review feature:Lifestyle Monthly Gerard feature 25/9/11 17:44 P driving a car for the first time and that car is a porche. itting on the fringe of Liverpool city centre, at the top of Bold Street lies one of the cleanest restaurants I have ever had had the pleasure to dine in (and I go to a lot). The wooden floor was sparkling, the authentic Italian ornaments were gleaming and the aroma of freshly cooking fish along with the Italian music was very welcoming. We sat opposite the bar looking out of the large windows which streamed a huge amount of light into the cosy space. This has to be the best place to buy and eat fresh fish in Liverpool. As a dedicated fish restaurant you can have traditional freshly cooked fish and chips, or be more adventurous. A wide selection of delicious non-fish dishes is fully available for those who are not really fish fans, so there is no excuse at all for not going! For antipasta, I chose the Smoked Haddock Rarebit, my smoked haddock served on a toasted ciabatta topped with welsh rarebit and a garlic salsa verde, which was absolutely delicious. My husband, who isn't really that fond of fish, chose the Suppli di Pesce; home made Italian fish cakes served with a mixed salad and tartare sauce. It went down extremely well.

For mains, I had the special from the blackboard - Seared Tuna Loin with home made thickly cut chips and sauted spinach with butter and parmesan. Oh my god, this was absolutely gorgeous. My mouth tingled with the medley of flavours and the tuna was cooked to perfection. My husband had the full Sea bass with new potatoes in garlic butter and mixed vegetables. The fish fell lightly from the bone and was sweet and succulent. Our 2 year old had the fish pie, it had to be ordered as the Club Fish's reputation precedes itself with this classic dish. It was served piping hot and 19 included a mixture of cod, haddock and salmon in a white sauce topped with mashed potato and parmesan crust. Fortunately for me she barely touched it so we took it home for our dinner where it was eagerly devoured. Safe to say, it definitely lives up to its reputation. Despite being heartily satisfied with our meal, we managed to squeeze in a latte and Torta Valter, an unbelievably moist and tasty chocolate and almond cake served with cream. The Italian Fish Club is an adorably quaint restaurant. The service is impeccable, the food is divine and the whole experience is five star. You can't beat it.

HANGING OUT WITH

MATTCARDLE A

s Matt Cardle’s highly anticipated debut single is released this month, Lifestyle Monthly’s editor, Amanda Moss, was lucky enough to chat to the X Factor winner who’s star is on the rise. Since capturing the hearts of the nation (and the editor) when he won last year’s X factor, Matt has been locked away with some of the industry top song writers and producers, writing and recording his impressive debut album, LETTERS.

The first single of that album, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE, is also released this month and W. Matt has co-written with Eg White (Adelle, Duffu, James Morrison to name but a few) At what point in the X Factor did you actually think you could win it?

I don’t think there was ever a point when I thought I was going to win. Even when I was on the stage and it was just Rebecca and I, I was quite happy thinking I was going home in second place. I mean Rebecca deserved to win it, she’s so sweet.

What do you think of the new judging panel?

Great. I’ve not really seen the shows as I have been too busy working in the studio. Gar is great, of curse and Tulissa will make her mark. Kelly has her own thing, she is gorgeous and Louis is holding the fort

Tell us about your new album

I have co written it with some of the greatest people, I have been very fortunate to work with Eg White and Nexus, who has written for Ellie Goulding and Biff who has written for Hurts, Kylie and Will Young.

And the story behind the single, Run for your Life

26

Gary Barlow sent me a song that he had written and I knew it was for me. I can really relate to that song. It’s all about not

being good enough for your partner and putting yourself down. He had written the words that I was trying to express, he had mastered them so perfectly. I tried to write a similar song myself but did it poorly. Gary did it well, I have seen that happen in my own life and I was happy to get the song, it’s actually very personal.

Is there a story behind the whole album?

Yes, it’s called LETTERS because it is just that. It’s about my life and experiences. My lyric book looks like a string of essays. When I listen to the album I go, yeah “I can relate to that.” It’s not deep but there are some nice thoughts and emotions.

Have you been star struck by anyone whilst working on this? Not at all. When I was on the X Factor there were people coming and going all the time, There was Danni and Kylie, obviously. Every week there would be special guests, like Helen Bonham Carter was in the corridor one time. Tey all just roll around and the X Factor numbs you to the celebrity . And at the end of the day they’re just a bunch of people who happen to be on the telly. They’re just normal people really.

You are the first X Factor winner not to be signed to Simon Cowell’s label, Syco. That’s quite an achievement, How did you manage to break away?

It was really sweet of Simon to put his faith in me and release me to Columbia Records who put in a bid for me. He understood that Columbia was a better place for me as I am not really a pop act. I am so happy there, they’re not a pop label, they’ve given us some great music like Kings of Leon and Kasabian, of whom I am a huge fan

Have you had control of your musical direction

Definitely. I know exactly what I want to do. I have been song writing for years, it’s nice that people are finally listening to what I do now. I am all about longevity, I work hard and plan to release four, five albums. I want to be around a long time

What’s important to you in this industry, Is there anyone you want to work with? Katy Perry would be good. And Rihanna of course.

Have you spoken to Rihanna since your steamy duet last year?

She is really sweet, she called me to congratulate me after I won last year. I really do want to see her again.

Have you a message for your Liverpool fans?

I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you to everyone who has supported me, I am overwhelmed by the support I have got. My dad is a scouser, he is from Knotty Ash so you could say I am home grown and have some good roots in Liverpool. The northern crowd is always so vibrant.

Are you watching this series of the X Factor?

So far I have only managed to see snippets as I have been in the studio a lot of the time

Do you have a rider?

No of course not, I lead a very simple life. I just like my beer and Haribos… and my guitar. And when I am not writing or recording music I just chill out with a few beers and a DVD, or I might go skateboarding and listen to my ipod.

What’s been the biggest surprise to you this year?

I realised that anything is truly possible if you set your mind to it. The X factor was a once in a lifestime experience but it has changed my life

Do you still live with your parents?

Ha ha no, I have moved out. I live with Aiden (also in last year’s X Factor). I’m still in touch with a lot of last year’s X Factor people, we became close as we experienced so much together. But I am still down the road from my parents

It’s Liverpool Fashion Week this month, have you had a makeover since the series ended last year?

No I have kept the same look. I would describe it as Broke Back Mountain without the Stetson! I just love my checked shirts, jeans and work boots. I always do my own clothes shopping, I don’t want a personal shopper just yet.

Beauty

THIS AUTUMN,

THE FACE IS ALL ABOUT REFINED ELEGANCE.... Writing by Francesca Dalla-Rive Photography by Rory Lewis Photographer

T

he look I created for India is very clean and fresh, with a hint of definition that adds a smouldering effect to this simple natural finish.

Healthy and well moisturised skin is the first thing to consider when applying make-up, therefore investing in good skincare and making time to care for your skin daily will really make a difference to your make-up application. Personally I love St Ives blemish & blackhead control apricot facial scrub used 3 times a week to keep skin clear and the Chanel Hydramax moisture range used once or twice daily to keep skin beautifully hydrated (although this is expensive it will last you for ages). To create India’s look I started by prepping the skin. Using a using a light moisturiser or primer to protect skin and create a smooth base is essential, I used Clarins beauty flash balm that tightens pores and brightens the skin. I then used Benefit’s Erase Paste to cover up small imperfections and to brighten under the eyes, I like concealer to be a shade lighter than foundation and of a creamy consistency. Following this I used Bobbi Brown moisture rich foundation to create a soft and creamy finish, this product is a great addition to your make-up bag as it is buildable and easy to blend making it great for light, medium and full coverage. To set the make-up in place I used Mac Prep+Prime transparent finishing powder, giving the skin a flawless finish. For the eyes I used Urban Decay’s Naked eye shadow palette, using a soft brush I applied Virgin across the whole eyelid up to the brow bone paying particular attention to the inner corners and not forgetting a sweep under the bottom lash line. On the outer corner blend Toasted from the lash line to the socket line and using this same colour smudge across the bottom lash line blending out the edges. Finally using Darkhorse define the socket line then blend into other shades using a clean fluffy brush. For this look no mascara is needed however a clear mascara or Vaseline applied with a lash wand can sometimes tidy and define the lashes. Enhancing the eyebrows is not only very fashionable right now but is a great way to show off eyes without over loading delicate areas with cream shadows, liners, and mascara. My favourite product for eyebrows is Benefit brow zings, using the angled brush and the cream colour I swept the inner eyebrows upward then lengthened the eyebrows outwards to create a slightly messy but elegant eyebrow. To finish the look I used a hint of bronzer to define under the cheekbones and a dab of Vaseline in the middle of the lips. ALAN CARR IS COMING TO LIVERPOOL!

The chat show supremo, stand up comedian and best selling author comes to the Echo Arena on 25 and 26 October BY JAMES RAMPTON

A

lan Carr is one of the best – and the best-loved – comedians currently at work. And yet he never takes his success for granted. He worries, for instance, that after so many years making TV and radio shows, his fans may no longer remember about his first love: stand-up comedy.

performed A Christmas Carol for the first time. The aura in that venue was incredible – it was like I had never left. You can really soak up the atmosphere in a place like that – unlike some of the more modern venues, where the night before they’ve had Teletubbies The Musical – On Ice!”

The good news is that Alan is now reminding us of his brilliance as a stand-up by returning to the live arena for the first time in four years. He is embarking on a nationwide arena tour this autumn with an entirely new show, “Spexy Beast”. He will be coming to a venue near you very soon. So as they say in all the best adverts, book early to avoid disappointment.

Alan proceeds to describe his stand-up style. “It’s about chatting,” muses the comedian, who hosted two very well-received series of his game show, Alan Carr’s Celebrity Ding Dong, on Channel 4. “I’m into detailing the minutiae of life. I’m never going to do an hour on tugboats. My audience know what they want from me. The chat show has freed me up. My style is looser now. I’m happy to go off-piste.”

The comedian, who is as warm and witty off screen as on, is really looking forward to seeing you all out there in the auditorium. Dressed in a natty dark suit – he is off to shoot a comic promo for a mate in which he plays Bond, James Bond – Alan begins by explaining why he is so eager to be hitting the road once again. “People might have forgotten that I’m also a stand-up,” says the comedian, who hosts the hugely popular Channel 4 chat show, Alan Carr: Chatty Man. “My last show, ‘Tooth Fairy’, was four years ago now. If I were to leave a stand-up tour any longer, it would start to look like a comeback!” “Stand-up is my safety blanket. I’m having such a great time at the moment, I hope my TV career lasts. But when it inevitably comes to an end, I’ll always have stand-up. I love doing live comedy. It’s also nice to know that I won’t have to earn money by going into the jungle and eating crocodiles’ testicles!” That’s not going to happen! Alan is one of our most treasured comedians. His priceless sense of humour and wonderfully effortless stage presence has won him a mantelpieceendangering number of awards. He has picked up the Best Entertainment Show for Alan Carr: Chatty Man at the 2010 TV Choice Awards, TRIC TV Personality of the Year and RTS Performance of the Year in 2009, two British Comedy Awards (Best Comedy Entertainment Personality in 2008 and Best Live Stand Up in 2007) and the Variety Club Best TV Presenter Award in 2008. Phew! The critics have been as favourable as the awards juries. The Evening Standard called Alan, “An absolute natural onstage, a born storyteller. Sheer entertainment.” The Daily Telegraph, meanwhile, praised his, “Warmth and charm. Alan Carr captures the spirit of a bygone age of British comedy.” And The Independent paid tribute to, “A comedian who owns the space he is working in so much, he could put up a flag.” What marks Alan out as one of the great stand-ups is his sheer charisma – you could power the whole 02 Arena with the warmth he generates on stage. He reflects on his marvellously close bond with his followers. “I have the best fans in the world!” beams the comedian, whose debut stand-up DVD, “Alan Carr Tooth Fairy” became a number one best-seller. “People are ever so nice. I get kids coming up wanting to hug me. At live shows, you get such a warm welcome - I receive this tremendous sense of affection from the audience. I think people enjoy the communal experience of watching comedy together. It’s such a buzz. Oh, I adore stand-up!” Alan goes on to outline the other aspects of live comedy that he loves so much. “Within reason, you can do whatever you want,” says the comic, whose immensely entertaining autobiography, Look Who It Is! My Story, has become a best-seller, selling more than 350,000 copies to date. “There is no editing and you’re not hanging around for the ratings the next day. I really like the spontaneity of it all. You haven’t got to cut bits out to make sure it fits the twelve minutes before the ads. That’s very liberating. Hopefully people are laughing throughout it and cheering at the end.” When on tour, the stand-up also loves tapping into the Great British tradition of live performance. “Last time, I played St George’s Hall in Bradford, where Charles Dickens

The comic, who currently co-hosts (with Melanie Sykes) his own Radio 2 Saturday night show, Going Out with Alan Carr, expands on the sort of subjects he will be discussing in “Spexy Beast.” “The show is about things that have tickled me that day. It won’t be about tugboats – well, only the first five minutes! “Personal stuff always goes down well. I’ll talk about my other half and my dog. But in the end, it’s stand-up – it’s not Piers Morgan’s Life Stories. Thank God, I don’t have to burst into tears every few minutes! Rest assured, it’s an upbeat show.” Alan also shies away from any overtly political material. “I’ve never been political,” avers the comic, who with Justin Lee Collins fronted several series of the widely-loved Channel 4 comedy show, The Friday/Sunday Night Project, between 2006 and 2009. “I recently tried to do a bit about the Middle East, but people didn’t like it. Ultimately, I’m just doing some jokes.” “Comedy has become so big now that journalists ask for my opinion on the economy. I tell them, ‘I’m just a stand-up comedian. I’ve no bloody idea!’ I get tweeted by people saying, ‘Please, please, do a routine about Libya’. But they’re asking the wrong person. People overrate comedians. Much as I’d like to sort it out for them, I’m afraid I can’t. I half-expect people to hand me Gaddafi’s phone number and say, ‘Have a word, Alan!’” Nor does Alan bracket himself with the more snide, clever-clever breed of comedians who populate the circuit. “I’d love to be one of those comics, but I’m not. My audience want something else from me: warmth and funny stories. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing. There is a snobbery in the broadsheets sometimes about comedy. The critics write these incredible reviews: ‘I didn’t laugh once, but what an amazing take on tugboats. Five stars’. It winds me up when people try to be clever for its own sake.” “I recently watched a documentary about Cary Grant. Some contributors were saying, ‘He was the most unsophisticated man in the world. He never knew what wine to order. He was not good with the ladies’. But so what? He picked his roles because he knew people wanted to see him as Cary Grant. Perhaps I’m comedy’s answer to Cary Grant. Give ‘em what they want. Why not?” As he psyches up for “Spexy Beast,” Alan can’t wait to get out there on stage and tell you all about the last four years. “Things just keep getting better and better for me,” he enthuses. “I was on holiday recently, and I picked up a magazine about house renovations. The first article I turned to had the headline: ‘Make your bedroom as camp as Alan Carr’. It’s funny when people mention your name and everyone knows what they’re talking about. It’s great when you become a byword for something.” Alan Carr is also a byword for “outstanding stand-up.” So whatever you do, don’t miss him. ‘Alan Carr: Spexy Beast’ will be released on DVD by Universal Pictures (UK) in November 2011.

musicreview UNCUT

JADE “MISS STYLIE JACKSON & BOOMIN both appearing at the Liverpool Fashion Week

JADE "MISS STYLIE" JACKSON

WHO ARE YOU? I'm Jade Jackson, pka as Miss Stylie I'm 21 and from Liverpool. I'm a recording artist, and I also MC, DJ and dance. WHAT IS YOUR MUSICAL BACKGROUND? I have been into music since I was around the age of 12. I grew up listening to all kinds of music like old skool garage, RnB and a massively big change to what I'm doing now, but scouse house was my thing and there was always blues, funk, soul and reggae in my life a lot blues from my dad and reggae from my sister. I have been performing around Liverpool and the North west since I was 14, MCing at local clubs, djing, and doing live showcases. This summer I performed at Glastonbury, as well as doing my first shows in London at YoYo, Notting Hill Arts Club, and Belfast at Thompson's. TELL US ABOUT THE DEBUT SINGLE Its produced by Youngstar who produced Dizzee Rascal's first top 10 Stand Up Tall. It is currently getting played on local stations and it's for the clubs. WHAT IS YOUR STYLE? High energy, club bangers that can smash clubs and festivals, with singing and rap in there. I'm trying to make my own fresh style that is me, I don't want to sound like anyone else or be compared to anyone else I want to make my own name with my own style!

WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT FROM YOUR PERFORMANCE AT LFW? A crazy, mad performance and as its LFW it has to be "SWAG" but not swagger jacker. It's Liverpool, we have the best fashion and the best looking people live here . I will be performing a couple of brand new fresh out the studio tracks that have never been heard before from my forthcoming EP released 5th November. WHAT WAS IT LIKE PERFORMING GLASTENBURY? EPIC!!! Amazing and emotional. I was very overwhelmed and got a fantastic response and better still the day I performed the sun came out so it was fab! WHY DID YOU SWITCH FROM SPORTS TO MUSIC? I used to box from a young age but when I was 16 dropped out for a bit. Now I am back into training now in my spare time. I played basketball when i was 17/18. I also trained with Liverpool Football Club ladies and various other local teams on and off from a young age and stopped playing for a local team when i was 19. Now I am fully focused on my music, getting an EP recorded then getting to work on my debut album. CHECK OUT

www.missstylie.tumblr.com Who are your musical idols?

BOOMIN

Who are you? Boomin are Adam Langmead - 24 (Guitar/Vox), Edd Langmead 29 (Drums/Vox) and Rory O'Grady - 25 (Bass/Vox) How did Boomin form? Boomin formed in 2006 when Edd met Rory at college and decided to start a pop/rock band along with his younger brother Adam and we've never looked back since. What's the story behind the name? Simply whether it be on nights out with friends or any good times that we had, up or coming we would use the term Boomin as a good thing! "Tonight is gonna be Boomin!" or "Are we Boomin?" or "I'm Boomin!" it was a clear choice of name for us. Describe your musical style Epic Pop Rock (we arent trying to start a new genre lol ) - Pop/Rock Why didn't you audition for the X Factor? With us being a pop/rock band, we entered Britains Got Talent instead, and we actually got through the judges stage with a standing ovation from The Hoff and Amanda Holden. We were tipped for great things but due to circumstances out of our control we were cut from the show

38

Freddie Mercury, Dave Grohl, Jack Black... basically all those true rockers who lived/live life to the full! What are your plans this year? We have just released a free e.p via Soundcloud.com/boomin which is a warm-up for our 1st studio album which will be released in 2012. Besides working on the album we have just sealed a support slot with Toploader commencing on 17th October of this year and we will be headlining Manchester Club Academy on the 12th November How easy it is writing lyrics? Writing lyrics actually comes fairly easy because we just use everyday experiences. It's hard work when you forget your pen and paper and lyrics fly into your head at the craziest of times.i.e flying down the M5 or swimming at the gym. How difficult is it to break into the music industry? I think so far it has been very difficult with so much of the industry being swayed towards the dance/hiphop industry.Being a 3 piece Pop/Rock band it feels very hard for us to break out.Even the established bands out there find it hard,we did a support gig with Scouting for Girls and The Script and after chatting to both bands we knew how hard this industry could get, but it never scared us off and that was even after meeting Jedward at the same gig. Tell us about your tour We are currently slowing the original gigs down this year to make more room for the progression of our album, so the 12th November Headline slot at Club Academy will be our last major for this year. but next year will be Boomin (see what i did there) with the album release and barrage of supports and shows up and down england, all whilst searching for the right label to support our Boomin world domination.

RICK VAUGHN ON WHAT’S HOT & NOT FOR OCTOBER

HOT

Liverpool Fashion Week Its back and I can honestly say it’s bigger and better than ever. For me, it is the one event every year that every fashionista should attend. The event has something for everyone, all shapes and all sizes. So don’t be a fashion faux par, make sure you’re there.

Farmaggedon I love Halloween, and if you’re looking to do it in fine style this year, I suggest you check out Farmaggedon. It’s the ultimate scare fest and still remains the best Halloween experience in the Northwest. Go along with all your mates and have the fright of your life.

Comedians First there were footballers, and then along came the DJ’s, but for my money these guys are the new rock stars… Jason Manford, Paddy Mcguinness, Alan Carr, and they’re all in Liverpool with Radio City this month for sell out gigs at the Echo Arena. Love them or hate them, the comedians are cleaning up.

Footloose (Film) I loved the original movie, and I’ll go as far as to say I loved the stage show when it came to Liverpool this year, but for me the re-make and re-release of this movie this month has all the hallmarks of becoming the next grease 2.

Million Everyone I speak to seems to be raving about this aftershave and if you enter any perfume shop, it’s in the top 5 best sellers. But I’m yet to be convinced that this is a must buy. So for now I’ll stick to my bottle of Escape and play it safe.

Winter Clothes

NOT

It’s that time of year once again when we unfortunately have to start digging out ou old winter clothes. But, I have to be honest, with the erratic weather that we’ve had lately it feels like I never packed them away. Mind you, as somebody said to me last week, we had a cracking April!!!

So October is here and it’s another jam packed month both personally and professionally. I have just arrived back from a trip to the States and I’ve been really lucky this year as the majority of trips I’ve been on have been working holidays, so I get to enjoy the sunshine of the day and at night entertain the masses in the clubs. But without doubt, the highlight of the year so far, was my trip to Las Vegas this week. I really had to pinch myself several times; after all, I’m just a bloke from Liverpool – getting to play records in one of the world’s true party capitals. The gig itself was amazing and as always, it helps when it’s jam packed. However, I’m well and truly back now from gallivanting and I’m looking forward more than ever to hosting the final night of Liverpool fashion week, which as I mentioned in my column above, has to be the hottest ticket in town. I really do tip my hat to Miss Moss and all the guys who have helped make this the ultimate yearly fashion fix for us all.

October seems to be a real hot month entertainment wise, with the influx of comedians coming to Liverpool, as well as the likes of Snoop Dogg, Katie Perry, Tinie Tempah and the legend that is Sir Cliff. So there are no excuses when it comes to getting out and about with Radio City 96.7. My Saturday nights continue at Envi on Fleet Street and needless to say our Halloween party will be off the hook, although you may not recognize me as I’ll be donning the ole fancy dress. Fitness wise, after spending two weeks in America I cant begin to tell you how much I weigh. As a result, I’ve begun a six week Detox, which I’m going to ‘try’ to keep up until the festive season. Talking of the festive season, which I happen to love, make sure you check out next months column, which will include hot happenings for Christmas and details of Radio City Live… which is back! Catch me on Radio City 96.7 weekdays from 10am till 2pm. 39

LIVERPUDLIAN ADVENTURER, LISA POVER IS OFF TO RACE BETWEEN THE NORTH AND SOUTH POLES. Fresh from her round the world sailing trip, Lisa, 30, is in full training for the trip next spring. She chatted to Lifestyle Monthly about her extra ordinary life in which she also raises money for disadvantaged people through The Lisa Pover Trust.. HOW DID YOU GET TO SAIL AROUND THE WORLD? I was stuck in a rut on the cabs, my job was soul destroying and so I answered an advert in a local newspaper to go on the challenge of a lifetime. it was was to take part in the first leg of the Liverpool Boat Race. My husband told me to stay behind and pay the mortgage but I didn’t listen! Since then I have become a fully qualified skipper and freelance on boats up and down the country, TELL US ABOUT YOUR CHARITABLE TRUST. I want to inspire disadvantaged people. There are a lot of people who have never been given any inspiration to better themselves or do well in their life. They live in generations of families who do nothing. I came from a similar background and I know how these people feel. They lead dysfunctional lives in their own villages,, with no confidence and they’re not in a good place, mentally. But I was academic and set out to better myself. I joined the cadets when I was 13 and went through the ranks. So far I have raised £50,000.With the money I am getting kids on the water and giving them inspiration. It’s a local solution for local people. IS YOUR HUSBAND SUPPORTIVE OF WHAT YOU DO? Most definitely. We both come from similar backgrounds. He runs alternative educational programmes for 14-16 year olds.We both want to help people. WHAT’S THE MOST DANGEROUS SITUATION YOU’VE BEEN IN? When we were sailing round the world we had broken sails and fishing nets caught under the boat after we’d been in a storm. But I never thought we were in danger. We worked as a team and I am not the type of person who panics. DID YOU GET TO STAY IN MANY OF THE PLACES YOU VISITED? Mostly two or 3 days, depending on the port, but we stayed in Western Australia for two weeks as the boat was fixed.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST FEAR? Well ironically I am not the strongest swimmer. I am mostly fearless but I wouldn’t do bee keeping. TELL US ABOUT YOUR TRIP TO THE NORTH AND SOUTH POLE. I am going with two people I met on facebook. In April 2012 we take on the North Pole challenge, a 320 nautical mile race across the rugged sea ice and treacherous islands of the High Arctic in the home of the largest land based predator, the polar bear. In December 2012 we race 500 miles across one of the highest, driest and coldest deserts on the planet, facing crevasses a mile deep, winds of up to 80mph and temperatures as low as -50C. Both races are organised by Extreme World Races who were behind the critically acclaimed Top Gear North Pole Special and Ben Fogle and James Cracknell’s “On Thin Ice”. We will be racing on cross country skis, pulling pulks, containing all our equipment, food and fuel, which will weigh up to 50kg. Frostbite will be a very real and constant threat, we want to return with all our fingers and toes! We will also have to endure blisters, sleep deprivation, exhaustion and the most basic of living conditions. How we come together as a team will be crucial, we were all on different yachts in our sailing race, so as yet we don’t really know how the others behave under pressure. YOU ARE A VERY INSPIRATIONAL PERSON. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE ELSE WANTING TO DO IT? Just go for it. Honestly, anyone can do it. It’s not a big deal really.

Neil Buchanan BAFTA winning Art Attack creator paints his childhood memories with Neil Buchanan’s HOPE STREET

Art honour will be if my art critics like the HOPE STREET paintings enough to hang them on their walls. That will be the biggest approval rating for me. Q: Who has influenced you as an artist? A: The biggest influence in my life, head and shoulders above anybody else, is my dad. It was my father who first spotted that I had a natural talent for drawing and we would spend hours together making pictures. I was nuts about cartoons and literally lived inside the Beano when I was young. I even used to stick my cartoons onto the ‘telly’, so that they’d be brought to life by the flickering TV screen. Q: How did you first get into TV? A: I spotted a bazaar advert which asked ‘Have you ever had breakfast with a gorilla?’ I responded saying I hadn’t ever had breakfast with a gorilla but I did once let a monkey sit on my lap... and I sent a photo to prove it! I got the job as the caricaturist on a show called No 73 and this gave me a great chance to show the world that I could draw on live TV! By the second series I’d blagged my way into a presenting role and went on to present Motormouth, Finders Keepers and Animal Crazy and I created the award-winning programme for deaf children called ZZZap! Q: What’s been the greatest achievement of your life? Winning the first of two BAFTAs for Art Attack - for an ordinary lad from Liverpool it doesn’t get much better than that!

C

heeky Scouser, Neil Buchanan, the creator, presenter and artist behind two times BAFTA award winning Art Attack, first entered our living rooms in 1990 and for the next 17 years six million viewers tuned in each week to the hit TV show. Now the loveable Liverpudlian is back in the city on Friday 7 October at Rennies Gallery, Bold Street, to launch Neil Buchanan’s HOPE STREET, a nostalgic collection of limited edition art based on Neil’s fascinating memories growing up in the city in the 1960s surrounded by Beatlemania. Q: What inspired you to start painting Neil Buchanan’s HOPE STREET? A: Three years ago I switched on my laptop whilst on holiday with my children to find 69,000 messages of condolence pouring into a Facebook site entitled ‘RIP Neil Buchanan’, following my ‘death’ from bowel cancer! Out of these dark and sinister rumours, I started questioning the madness of modern technology and its negative influences and began to record my own childhood memories in Liverpool in the early 60s. We didn’t have a lot of money but we did have the great outdoor adventure playground! Q: Tell us about the pictures in Neil Buchanan’s HOPE STREET A: My HOPE STREET is not a place, it’s a state of mind... and it’s a nice place to be. They were long, carefree days in the great outdoor adventure playground. When I went out to play, I walked down my very own HOPE STREET everyday with the gift that only children truly possess in abundant measure imagination. I’m a sucker for nostalgia and each picture tells a story. I skip across all sorts of memories from fishing with homemade rods, shared bike rides and hanging out on the swings, to the dead exciting arrival of the ice cream man and eating chips straight from the wrapper! There’s quite a bit of humour too... I am a cheeky Liverpudlian after all! Q: Whose opinion do you value the most? A: I had six million art critics tuning in to Art Attack every week and it was their opinions I valued above all. The greatest

Q: Tell us about A Little Hope in aid of the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal? A: Having worked with children for two decades, I decided I wanted to give something back so I painted A Little Hope which features two children praying at the end of their bed for health, happiness, peace and love... ‘cos where there is love – there is always HOPE! Neil Buchanan’s HOPE STREET is being launched on Friday 7 October in the city at Rennies Gallery 61-63 Bold Street, Liverpool L1 4EZ and Neil will make a personal appearance in the gallery from 6pm to 9pm www.renniesgallery.co.uk A Little Hope is available online as a signed limited edition, ready-tohang stretched canvas on www.neilbuchanan.co.uk. For every print sold £7.50 will be donated to the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal.

TOM SLEMEN’S HALLOWEEN......

With Halloween around the corner, Merseyside author, Tom Slemen, leads the way in his spooky tales. His Haunted books have sold hundreds of thousands of copies and he is an expert in the hauntings of Liverpool buildings. We are fortunate for him to write for Lifestyle Monthly magazine this month.

O

n the foggy Hallowe’en evening of Saturday, 31 October, 1874, Father Maurus Anderson of St. Peter’s Church (now Alma de Cuba) on Seel Street, was ready to lock up the place of worship when he distinctly heard a noise outside. He opened the entrance door of the church and held his lantern out into the swirling autumn fog. The 46-year-old Catholic priest heard a low moan, and felt something cold – and wet – brush past him. He locked and bolted the door and turned, thrusting the lantern at the invisible intruder. Prayer candles were lit in the church, and the beloved pastor of St Peter’s flock bravely attempted to confront the supernatural visitant. He knew it was not his imagination when he saw the glistening wet imprints of bare feet appear on the floor of the aisle, one after the other, heading in his direction – towards the altar. ‘Who goes there?’ Father Anderson’s voice echoed throughout the deserted church, and he squinted at the faint form before him, materializing ever so slowly from a nebulous mist. The outline of a young female slowly came into focus. She had bedraggled, wet, dripping curly hair, an awful dark gash in her throat, and a long white gown upon her. ‘Mary,’ gasped the brave priest, for he recognized the ghost as that of 15-year-old Mary Maloney, a poor Irish girl. She was supposed to be living on a farm in North Wales, not dead in Liverpool, and so terribly mutilated. She stood before him, the tearful dripping spectre of a girl who had often called to his presbytery for help. She whispered to Father Anderson, and it was difficult to hear some of her words, but the priest soon got the gist. Mary had been made pregnant by her uncle, and when he discovered she was having a child, he cut her throat, carted her body to the docks and threw it into the Mersey. During a pause in the ghost’s dialogue, a golden radiant light shone from

her abdomen, and the priest could clearly see a glowing image of the unborn baby Mary had been carrying. The priest blessed the spirits of the mother and child, and Mary smiled before fading away. At first light the next morning the priest and two parishioners located the body of Mary drifting in with the tide near the Albert Dock. The police raided Bill Morris’s Lodging House at 82 Melville Place, but Mary’s uncle, George Donnelly, had already fled from his room. He had told Father Anderson only a week before that Mary had been adopted by a farmer and his wife in Wales, when in fact he was merely covering up the disappearance of his niece. Donnelly was seen in Wales a week later, and the police closed in on him, but a dense fog blanketed the area and hampered their efforts to catch the murderer. However, in the following spring, a Welsh shepherd on Cader Iris Mountain came upon the corpse of Donnelly, jammed between two crags, badly decomposed and partly pecked away by crows. The murderer was only identifiable from his red hair and several documents in his pockets. He had probably fainted from exposure whilst on the run and ended up trapped between the crags. It was poetic justice. St Peter’s Church closed in 1978, and in 2005, after the church had lain empty and disused for so long, the bar and restaurant Alma De Cuba moved into the premises. It is said that each Halloween, eerie cold spots are felt and strange whispering voices can be heard at Alma De Cuba… • Tom Slemen’s latest book: Spirits in the Vaults – the Haunted Pubs of Liverpool, is out now. All of Tom’s works are also available as ebooks for the Kindle and iPad from Amazon.

ECHO ARENA THE LOWDOWN... With Promotions Manager, Emma McHarrie

W

ow...what a busy month September has been – don’t know about you but I can’t believe it’s October already!

So did you come to see Batman Live? It was absolutely brilliant – and so many of the kids (and adults!) made a top effort with their ‘caped crusader’ outfits which added hugely to the spectacle! Liverpool fighter Tony Bellew was there with his little boy too – Tony is challenging Nathan Cleverly for the WBO World Light-Heavyweight Title here on 15 October and based on the pre fight talks at the press conferences - which saw security having to pull them apart when things got a little heated - it’s set to be an explosive night. Good luck, Tony – Liverpool is behind you! We’ve had some great new shows at Echo Arena confirmed over the past few weeks – including Kasabian, Olly Murs, Radio City Live and X Factor. Oh and of course JLS who are so

48

popular that they’ve just announced a second date, wahey! The band have said that they’re really excited to perform tracks from their new album (out on 14 November) along with fan favourites and a few surprises thrown in too sounds like it’ll be a great show! For the rock fans amongst you, we’ll be welcoming Carnival Du Vampires Rock back here on 29 October - this year’s show is jampacked with a mix of rock, thrills & spills, guaranteeing to get you on your feet! Along with Steve Steinman, a full cast of superb singers, dancers and formidable band blast their way through some of the greatest ever classic rock anthems including: We Will Rock You, Bat Out of Hell, Highway to Hell, Since You’ve Been Gone, Total Eclipse of the Heart, Devil Gate Drive, I Love Rock n Roll, Sweet Child of Mine and many, many more! I’ll certainly be out that night with my trusty air guitar – what a Halloween treat!

DIY expert Hi guys This month I’ve spent some time in Norris Green helping DIY SOS develop and renovate Norris Green Youth Centre. The Centre had the potential to be a superb facility and just needed a bit of time, effort and money invested in it to make it a great place for young people to enjoy. Norris Green is an area of high employment so as well providing fun activities the centre has developed a program which intends to broaden the horizons of local kids and develop their skills in education and employment. The centre is open 7 nights a week and has at least 50 kids attending each evening, it’s doing some excellent work for the community so I was really pleased to be able to help and support in any way I can. Recently, I attended the Professional Builder Tool Fair 2011 in Coventry as a brand ambassador for Blaklader. On Blaklader’s stall, professional tool users and laborers had the opportunity to try out Blaklader’s range of work wear first hand. The event was really successful and Blaklader’s range was really popular with visitors. Enjoy this month’s DIY top! Craig Philips

Job 75 = Fitting stair spindles, newel posts and handrails Whether you are changing your handrail and spindles for decorative purposes or building them from scratch, they will need to comply with building regulations and be strong enough to serve the purpose they are designed for. STAGE 1 Begin by setting the newel post (main post) using a dowel joint. With an 18 volt drill and 22mm spade drill bit. Burrow a circular hole in the bottom of both the newel post and the base corner of the stair. Cut a piece of dowel down to length (22mm diameter broom handle is the perfect size) and apply some expanding glue in and around the joint of the two drilled holes. Set the newel post into position using a spirit level to check that it stands perfectly upright. Using a chop saw cut the bottom base rail and top handrail to the length and angle of your stairs; then drill a pilot hole through the base rail before firmly screwing it into position. STAGE 2 Matching the angle and fall of your stairs, use a chop saw to cut your spindles to the required length and place your first spindle into position gluing down a 100mm space marker (100mm gap is the building regulation requirement). These spacers come as part of the kit when purchasing spindles, handrails and newel posts. Now place your top handrail over the first spindle to set the height. A pilot hole will need to be drilled into the underside of the handrail to allow you to drive the screw through the handrail and firmly attach it to the newel post. The structure of your handrail and spindles is now starting to come together. STAGE 3 Continue to fit the rest of your spindles using the 100mm spacers, making sure to use plenty of glue on the top and bottom of the spindle and the underside of each spacer. If you wish, you can hammer a panel pin through the spacers to secure them in place until the glue sets. The same process should be followed whether you require 6 or 7 spindles or 30 on an open plan staircase.

INTRODUCING LIVERPOOL’S LATEST GIRL BAND: The Sirens

D

ebuting at Liverpool Fashion Week’s closing party on 22 October, the Sirens are made up of four hopefuls, Natalie Dean, 20, Amy Liddle, 25, Alex Hughes, 19 and Sarah Gardner, 26. The band were put together after answering an advert in a local newspaper for a new girl group. Sarah and Amy, both blondes, got the job and then helped recruit two brunette singers. The name, Sirens was picked by Sarah’s brother. She says, “Originally I thought of ambulance sirens but then I looked up in the dictionary the meaning of a sire. It said that the concept is of a powerful goddess who can capture all that comes within her reach. “ “Dangerous and alluring,” Alex added. Spokeswoman for the group, Sarah, says of their singing abilities, “Don’t pigeon hole us, we are quite edgy. We all have distinctive voices and you can hear all our ranges. One of us is soulful, one of us is quite high,, one of us is low and I have mid range, so it’s a good mix, we all compliment each other. Alex is studying performing arts at university and has knowledge in music which is also an advantage. Amy and Natalie are also trained dancers.” The Sirens are not working on an album at present, but are hoping instead to do as many live gigs as possible. Sarah has also started songwriting. She says, “I am actually a good poet and I am writing stuff down all the time now. I have been singing since I was a young age.” Sarah says, “We have about 100 songs for us to perform, we don’t have a particular genre, there’s a bit of R&B, a bit of dance, garage and even rock. We are not what you would expect from a girl band when you hear us sing. But we are good and we just want to get out there and show everyone. We love singing and we can sing.” Pictured below: Amy Liddle, Natalie Dean, Sarah Gardner and Alex Hughes
