When it comes to historic hotels, none can compete with The Adelphi Hotel Located in the centre of Liverpool, the Adelphi still retains its reputation as one of Liverpool’s most iconic hotels to date. The history of The Adelphi Hotel is one of the most fascinating in terms of hotels in Britain and contains an abundance of stories, spanning over the last two centuries Liverpool itself celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2007 and is renowned for its charming appeal and character. The city was nominated as the annual European Capital of Culture together with Stavanger, Norway in 2008 bringing in a growing number of tourists to Liverpool. One of the most notable achievements in recent years has been its recognition by UNESCO which saw several areas of the city centre granted World Heritage Site status in 2004
The Britannia Adelphi Hotel
A world heritage site
It all started in 1826, when hotelier James Radley opened a hotel building in Ranelagh Place, on the site of the Ranelagh Gardens, the first public recreation space in the city centre. The hotel had a rather uneventful beginning until around 50 years after the grand opening, when the building was knocked down and the ‘second’ Adelphi was built in its place.
Opening in 1876, the ‘second’ Adelphi held no resemblance to its predecessor, as this new version of the hotel aimed at providing a more luxurious feeling With over 300 rooms and run by roughly 140 members of staff, the new building was the most eyecatching in the city centre
During this time period, the Adelphi was world-renowned not only for its service, but for its unique turtle soup, prepared from the basement of the hotel where there was a set of heated tanks to keep live turtles for the soup which was not only served, but was also distributed around the country for banqueting events. In addition, The Adelphi was regarded as Liverpool’s leading hotel of its time, with wealthy travellers often visiting before setting off from the local harbour One of the most notable visitors to the hotel during the 1800s was Charles Dickens, who listed The Adelphi as one of his favourite hotels He visited the hotel three times between 1826 and his death in 1870
With its glowing reputation, it was no surprise that other hotel chains were interested in taking over management of the hotel. In 1892, the Midland hotel chain was successful and James Radley handed the hotel over to another hotelier, William Towle.
The ‘third’ Adelphi opened in 1914 and is the same building that stands to this day The new building was designed by Frank Atkinson, and construction was left in the hands of one of the most renowned firms in Liverpool Once again, the building outshone the one that came before; this time the magnificent structure housed a heated indoor swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, Turkish baths, shooting galleries and two restaurants that specialised in both French and English cuisine. It was also thought that this was the first hotel in the country to have these facilities Yet what really made the new hotel stand out from the rest was the fact that each room was fitted with an amazing and state-ofthe-art contraption: a telephone
During the early years of the 20th century, the Adelphi became one of the main arrival and departure points for those travelling on ocean liners, including the Titanic. The Adelphi served as the most popular hotel in Liverpool for wealthy passengers

FRIDAY16MAY2025–AINTREE
RACECOURSE
One of Liverpool’s most exciting breakthrough acts will be making their Red Rum Garden debut next May, in what is set to be their biggest hometown show to date. RED RUM CLUB will headline a huge outdoor concert after racing at Aintree Racecourse on Friday 16th May 2025.
2024 has truly been a landmark year for the Crosby sextet – their fourth studio album “Western Approaches” broke into the top 10 of the UK album charts, their highest chart position to date. Following this, they headlined Liverpool’s 9,000 capacity M&S Bank Arena in a triumphant hometown celebration and spent the summer on a victory lap across some of the UK’s most prestigious festivals.
Red Rum Club’s music is intricately entwined with the sounds of Merseyside, pioneering what has been described as their "Mariachi Merseybeat". Currently touring with contemporaries Blossoms and set to tour with The Jockey Club Live alumnus The Wombats in the new year, performing live is where the band feel most at home.
Red Rum Club said, “To say we’re excited to play Aintree Racecourse is an understatement. Outdoor summer shows are our favourites, and where better to play than in the Red Rum Garden? We’ve all been to the races at Aintree over the years and it’s a fantastic day out. We can’t wait !”
After a trio of spectacular shows in the North West at Haydock Park Racecourse this year, which attracted over 25,000 music and racing fans to the hallowed ground, The Jockey Club Live are thrilled to announce the return of live music to Aintree Racecourse and beyond.” TheJockeyClubLivewillbehostingliveconcertsafter racing
Texture-rich finishes, such as bold wallpapers are also set to dominate interior trends in 2025. To embrace this look, incorporate elements like vertical gardens or moss walls, which add both texture and a pure touch to your space.
“It’s all about creating spaces that feel unique, vibrant, and uplifting ”
Curves and Organic Shapes
Organic, flowing designs are replacing sharp edges in 2025, with curved furniture and arched architecture gaining popularity. Jo comments “choose rounded pots or plants with soft, arching forms, such as Peace Lilies or a Chinese Money Plant, to replicate this trend.
Big and Bold
Houseplants are perfectly aligned with the bold, vibrant interior trend also emerging for 2025, where striking colours and large pieces are coming in. Rich tones like magenta, burgundy, and deep purples are gaining popularity while big, dramatic plants are set to be really popular too. Combining these trends with pots in lilac or emerald green can create an impressive look in any space.
Multifunctional Spaces
As hybrid lifestyles continue to thrive postpandemic, beautifully designed home offices are making a big comeback in 2025. Houseplants are an excellent way to define multifunctional spaces, adding both style and functionality. Taller plants, such as Fiddle Leaf Figs or Kentia Palms, can create dividers to separate work areas from living spaces, while compact, air-purifying options like Snake Plants are perfect for enhancing desk spaces with a touch of greenery.

STAY IN A MONASTERY
WHAT BETTER WAY IS THERE TO START THE NEW YEAR?
Spiritual Travel Ideas For 2025
If you think that the season has become over-commercialised you are not alone, says a leading tourism expert Lily Smith from Monasteries com says: ‘Our latest analysis of recent polls reveals Brits’ attitude to the New Year is becoming increasingly negative. Many people have found the recent holidays stressful and overcommercialised Money is also a worry The average Brit spends around £700 during the Christmas season on presents, food, clothes and parties According to the business analysts Statista, this Christmas we spent a record £88 3bn, up from £84.9bn last year. It’s no wonder that a growing number of people are looking to escape the consummerism in the new year
There are few better ways of achieving this than by staying in a monastery, convent or similar religious institution in the New Year. Many people looking to escape the frenzy and spend their time somewhere quieter and more contemplative are surprised but delighted to discover they can stay in monasteries and convents here in the UK and in many countries across Europe.
Far from being cloistered in their rooms, guests often get the chance to meet likeminded travellers at many monasteries and abbeys. It’s a great opportunity for people to come together for the season Food plays a very important role in monastic life, with guests often encouraged to come together for meals and friendly conversation. Most properties provide bed and breakfast as standard, with some catering for all meals if booked in advance
Here in the UK, a variety of locations will be welcoming guests including St.Winefride's Guest House in the ancient town of Holywell, a place of pilgrimage since the 7thcentury The Bridgettine Sisters welcome people for an enjoyable stay all year round. The Convent Chapel, adjacent to the guesthouse, is a sanctuary that is always open to pilgrims and visitors and serves as a perfect space for quiet contemplation and prayer. The Bridgettine Convent has a thriving liturgical life, including daily Mass and services over the Christmas period, that everyone is invited to participate in Visitors can also explore the historic St.Winefride's Holy Well and delve into the town's rich history at the Greenfield Valley Heritage Park They can wrap up warm to enjoy the scenic countryside with various walking and cycling trails Rooms are available from just £74 per night
Further afield, where better to rediscover the message of Christmas than in Rome, where the Vatican holds 21 days of celebrations well into the new year.. Attractions include the famous nativity scene in St Peter’s Square, markets, carols and Masses. St. Peter's Basilica and St. Peter's Square are open throughout January.
The 18th-century Hotel Casa Valdese, near St Peter’s, is run by the Waldensian Diaconia. The hotel is located close to the Vatican, in one of the most fascinating areas of the capital, yet it’s both quiet and peaceful and yes easily located within walking distance of local restaurants and attractions.
Another of Rome’s religious guesthouses that’s a haven for pilgrims is Casa Margherita Teresa, managed by the Convittrici del Bambin Gesù. It’s a little further away from the centre of Rome and caters to a diverse range of guests, including clergy and laity, families and solo travellers. It offers single, double, triple and quadruple rooms, all of which come equipped with private bathrooms.
asa Margherita Teresa provides a retreat for those seeking spiritual rejuvenation or simply a peaceful stay One benefit is that the Casa offers full board for those who want to feel a part of the community and share in its meals. There’s also a chapel actually on the premises for guests who are looking for a spiritual break. Rooms are available for £57.30 per night with full board from £94.70
Since the dawn of monasticism in the 6th century, gardens have been an integral part of monastic life. Far more than simple plots to grow food, these sacred spaces have nourished both body and soul for countless monks, nuns, and pilgrims through the ages.
The tradition of monastic gardening first took root with the Benedictines, whose Rule emphasised the importance of ora et labora - prayer and work. Manual labour in the garden was seen as a way to cultivate humility, strengthen the body, and attune the mind to the rhythms of God's creation.
As monasteries spread across Europe in the Middle Ages, so too did their gardens, becoming oases of beauty, knowledge and contemplation.
New Blog
HELLO 2025
As another new year unfolds, it’s time to reflect on the last 12 months It’s 4am as I write this and there’s a quiet stillness that settles over the world a gentle pause between the fading echoes of the past and the soft murmur of what’s to come It’s a time of reflection, of taking stock of all that has unfolded, of looking back on the journey before stepping forward into the unknown. What have I achieved? What have I failed at? What have I let go of?
I have just finished filming a huge 10 month project which I can’t talk about but hopefully will come to fruition next year. This has taken up most of my year and it’s the biggest secret I have had to keep But hopefully it will bring the best result I can hope for in 2025. And if it doesn’t, I can honestly say it’s been the most fun project I have worked on and I have made incredible connections from it It’s been an absolute blast. But for now let’s stay in the present I am surrounded by my children sleeping peacefully and safely in their beds There is a biting wind outside but my house is warm and my fridge is full. It fills my heart with joy and gratitude. If there’s one thing I have excelled at, it is being a good mother and achieving everything my own mother wasn’t for me. My kids told me they had one of the best summers of their lives and that is all I could ask for I listen regularly to the highly inspirational Mel Robbins podcast and yesterday on my 5k walk she was talking about how life is a journey and we don’t have failures, we have experiences We are exactly where we are meant to be We all feel “bleugh” at some points
and when we have a block we need to pull over and breathe. Take stock of where we want to go and visualise how we will feel when we get there And then move forward Being in my 50s is kind of liberating, I have more time to myself now, I am more accepting of myself and I have a deeper appreciation of time I am not weighed down by other people’s opinions of me and love the person I have grown into. I can laugh at myself and feel empowered I say no regularly without guilt
There have been hurdles this year,of course, that’s part of life. There has been grief. And things haven’t always gone my way But ultimately I am proud of the last year I celebrated the Manchester and Liverpool Lifestyle Awards, I produced Liverpool Fashion Week and I achieved a goal of putting on a fashion show in Cyprus, all of which were a success, not just for me, but for everyone involved. These events give people the confidence to keep going and allow them to recognise their talents within themselves and that makes me proud to be able to give them a platform to do this.
I have written a song that’s had national radio play and this month will be collaborating with an artist to write an album, I am launching the Lifestyle Music Awards and I have a trip somewhere very exciting in the spring which could propel my life in a completely new direction Who knows where it will lead me?
The past twelve months have been full of both triumph and personal challenges, moments of incredible joy and some loneliness, but countless lessons learned along the way. The year began with lofty ambitions, whilst in the midst of uncertainty and struggle That uncertainty hasn’t diminished but I keep putting one step in front of the other and I am going with the flow . I have faith that everything
by Amanda Moss
will work out Universal timing will bring everything together for me when it’s meant to be and not when I want it.
I have been a little more selfish this year too, taking myself on a solo holiday to Hong Kong which is another bucket list ticked off. I love going on adventures, I love being spontaneous.
Last year taught me to walk away from people who used me and hurt me and I recognised those who have supported me and will continue to nurture these treasured friendships I keep my circle tight, I trust few people now but the people I surround myself with are good people whom I cherish.
As 2025 unravels fresh opportunities, I am filled with gratitude I am ready for 2025, not because I have everything figured out, but because I know that whatever comes my way I will meet it with the strength and wisdom that the past year has given me And I am embracing the new year with excitement for what unfolds,.
