Cyprus’ tax-free income threshold is set to rise to €20,500 per year, following the announcement of a set of sweeping tax reform plans by President Nikos Christodoulides on Tuesday.
The plans will see the minimum earnings threshold to pay income tax rise by €1,000 from its current level, at which it has sat since Cyprus introduced the Euro in 2008.
Additionally, Cyprus’ 35 per cent top income tax ratewillnowonlyapplyto those earning more than €80,000 per year, rising from its current level of €60,001.
The reforms are aimed to strengthen Cyprus’ middle class, as the “foundation of every prosperous and democraticsociety”.
The most notable planned reforms is an increase in individuals’ tax-free incomes, while he also promised a “series of significant tax deductions which take into account the needs of households and the composition of the family”
In addition to the €1,000 additional tax-free amount, parents will receive an extra €1,000 for every dependent they have, while Christodoulides’ plan also foresees €1,500 of tax-free income for every parent who is either buying their first house or renting, and €1,000 for a “green investment” on the part of every parent.
Single parents will receive double the ringfenced taxfree amount.

I have released one album and three country music singles to date In addition to this, I’m a secondary school teacher as well as a multi-award winning Children’s Book Illustrator. I also co-run a book publishing company called Enigami Publishing with a wonderful woman called Deb Lucas and a record label calledShadowTownRecordswithmy songwritingpartnerNigelMeasures.
Tell us about the record label you set upandwhendidthishappen?
How did you move from being a drama teacher into being a singer songwriter?
Drama teaching was the start of my journey in the music business. I was a vocal and performance coach in theearlydaysofteachingDrama.As I worked with different artists, It became obvious that the step from recording to releasing was proving to be a step too far for them. I am a person who is naturally inclined to find out how things work, so with a close friend of mine, Nigel Measures, we set up an independent record label called Shadowtown Records. From these humble beginnings, we movedfromstrengthtostrength
Shadowtown records has been going now for about 20 years. We started off with two artists, Loretta Brown, a soul singer,andGeezerSafari,abandrunby a friend of ours. How difficult is it for artists to make it in the industry these days
It’s never been easier for artists to release their own music, set up their own labels and be a self sufficient musical entity. However, the advent of streaming music has rapidly decreased the amount of money that artists can make on the worlds biggest platforms. For example, in order to make $1000 on Spotify, you need to have your music streamed on their site over 370,000 times. With the algorithm skewed towards the top artists, such as Drake or Ed Sheeran, indie artist will find it very difficult to even register with people. I personally use a site like BandCamp.com which has much fairer rates. Artists need to think like a business, promote their music like a business and independently grow their own fanbase, away from major label influence if they wish to make any profit in music. How would you describe your musical style?
I am very much a country music artist. My songs can be quite rock orientated as well I love a strong beat and guitars, but also love an old school flavour, such as violins and slide guitars. It used to be very unfashionable, but I really think it is growing, especially in the UK. I think younger listeners are connecting to the lyrics as life is pretty fractious and tough for people at the moment.
How emotive do you find your music?
My music deals with universal themes. Love, loss, strength, weakness, regret, hope, themes like these. I think these are emotions that all people can identify with. As a result of this, my music does connect with people who are going through a variety of different circumstances. I think my career as a teacher makes me attuned to life and the struggles and elation that life brings.
Who are your musical influences?
I grew up listening to Marty Robins, Dolly Parton, and western music. This was my Dad’s influence. When I was in university, my tastes in country had evolved to listening to music by Wynonna Judd, Pam Tillis, Alison Krauss, Lonestar etc Country music in the late 90s definitely went through an evolution, whilst remaining somewhat true to the ideals of older country music. Nowadays, I’m listening and discovering a whole new generation of artists who excite me. These include Whiskey Myers, Ryan Bingham and Cadillac Three.

March is a great time to make easy wholesome dishes using tasty seasonal ingredients and little prep time so youcanenjoythesunshine!
AFELIA (PORK STEW)
Ingredients:
500g pork shoulder or tenderloin (cut into cubes)
1 onion (chopped)
3 garlic cloves (minced)
1/2 cup red wine
2 tbsp coriander seeds (crushed)
2 tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat and brown the pork cubes.
Remove the pork from the pan and set aside. In the same pan, add the onion and garlic and sauté until softened
Add the pork back into the pan and pour in the red wine. Stir to deglaze the pan.
Add the crushed coriander seeds, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
Cover the pan and simmer for about 1 hour, until the pork is tender and the sauce has thickened
Serve with roasted potatoes or a side of fresh salad.
HALLOUMI CHEESE WITHTOMATOES & OREGANO
Ingredients:
250g Halloumi cheese (sliced)
2 tomatoes (sliced)
Fresh oregano (for garnish)
1 tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Add the Halloumi slices and fry until golden brown on each side, about 2-3 minutes per side.
Heat the olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
2. Arrange the fried Halloumi on a plate with sliced tomatoes.
3. Sprinkle with fresh oregano, salt, and pepper.

4. Serve as a starter or a side dish to complement grilled meats.
Ingredients:
250g minced beef or lamb
KOUPEPIA (Stuffed Vine Leaves)
1/2 cup rice (washed)
1 onion (finely chopped)
1/4 cup fresh parsley
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tbsp tomato paste
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 lemon (juice)
Salt and pepper to taste
Mix the minced meat, rice, onion, parsley, olive oil, tomato paste, cinnamon
Lay out the vine leaves and place the filling at the base of each leaf
Fold in the sides and roll them tightly into a cigar shape.
Arrange the stuffed vine leaves in a pot, layering them as you go. Pour water to cover the rolls and Add the lemon juice.
Cover with a plate to keep the rolls in place and cook for about 45 mins
Serve with a dollop of yogurt or tzatziki.

How did you end up in Cyprus ?
I came in 2001. I used to work as a freelance physiotherapist in Slovakia and time came, when I hesitated to either continue working like that or I'll take a chance to go "abroad" although I had no idea where. I just visualised the place with the sea, morning running along the beach...So I made a decision to go abroad. Within a month the job offer came, a position for a physiotherapist in a hotel health club in Limassol. One month later I sat in the plane to Cyprus. Beginnings were tough, everything was new, but I adapted.
What do you love about living here?
I honestly like this "chalara/relaxed" lifestyle. No rush, life has its own pace. Sea and sunshine are the best healers
