Rebecca Adlington names Edge Hill University ‘Venue of the Year’ for nationwide swimming programme

G o o d N e w s

OLYMPIC swimmer Rebecca Adlington OBE has awarded Edge Hill University ‘Venue of the Year’ for hosting her Swim! programme, praising the outstanding experience offered to young learners. The University beat 26 other venues across England and Scotland to the top spot, scoring consistently highly in areas such as customer satisfaction, swimmer numbers, swimmer progress, and swimmer and staff retention rates.

Edge Hill is in its fifth year of hosting swim! – led by Rebecca Adlington OBE and co-created with fellow Olympic swimmers Steve Parry MBE and Adrian Turner – which provides lessons for children up to the age of 11.

Rebecca said: “In awarding ‘Venue of the Year,’ we look at every metric and Edge Hill is a top performer. There’s a great, solid team, consistent positive reviews, few lesson cancellations, and swimmers and staff choose to stay with us.

“The facilities are fantastic too. Edge Hill has a big competition-size pool, which means we can take swimmers through the full range of our programme to Stage 8, where they leave as skilled swimmers; this isn’t possible in all venues.”

Fall in Love with Money

Money: A Modern Obsession or a Necessary Evil?

Money is often described as the root of all evil, yet it’s undeniably one of the most powerful forces shaping our lives. From the rise of the entrepreneurial spirit to the materialism that pervades social media, the idea of falling "in love" with money has evolved into a complex, multifaceted issue. But what does it truly mean to fall in love with money? Is it a modern obsession, or is it simply an unavoidable necessity in today’s world?

The Allure of Wealth

To understand this "love affair" with money, we first need to address the powerful allure it holds

Money is a ticket to freedom the freedom to travel, live in luxury, indulge in pleasures many can only dream of. As social media influencers and celebrities flaunt their wealth, money has become synonymous with success and happiness. The desire for money isn’t just about financial security; it’s also about the status and power it can bring

Studies show that those who prioritize money over relationships or personal well-being often experience higher levels of stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction with life. The "love" of money can also lead to a breakdown in personal values

Perhaps the key to a healthy relationship with money is recognizing it for what it truly is a tool, not a goal. The most successful individuals often treat money as a means to an end rather than the end itself.

It’s not the money that brings fulfilment, but what money enables us to do: create, help others, travel, and explore. Falling in love with money isn’t inherently bad it’s the way we fall in love with it that matters. If we let money guide us with integrity and compassion, it can become a powerful tool for growth and positive change. But when we let money define us and dictate our every move, the consequences can be overwhelming The key is in finding balance, appreciating money for its ability to provide opportunities without losing sight of the things that truly matter in life. Money can open up for opportunities for generosity by giving back to the community, helping others and mentorship. This is a posiitve thing. If money helps you achieve your goals, support your family, and live a meaningful life, it’s okay .

Don’t feel bad if you love money, as long as you do so in a way that supports your growth, values, and well-being. The true challenge lies in how you use that love to enrich not only your life but the lives of others too.

Money should never become the only source of happiness and money, in itself, isn’t inherently bad. The key lies in understanding why you love money and how it impacts your life

A public consultation has launched to get views on a new cycle lane connecting up Liverpool’s waterfront

Liverpool City Council is asking the public for their feedback on the proposed permanent cycle lane, located on Bath Street and Waterloo Road

The proposal is key to the city region’s Active Travel programme and will also feature new and improved footpaths and pedestrian crossing facilities, with the replacement of a roundabout with a new 3-arm junction to Princes Dock at William Jessop Way. The works will fulfil an important missing link in the city’s cycling network, connecting the existing facilities on The Strand with the Regent Road cycle lane creating a 4-mile-long route. This continuous walking, wheeling and cycling link which will run along the city’s historic waterfront, will also improve connections from the new Everton Stadium with the city centre.

The scheme will also upgrade an area known as the Bath Street Triangle which will improve links between Princes Dock and the business district.

The four-week long consultation runs until Monday, 24 March with information and a feedback form available online at liverpool.gov.uk/activetravelcon sultation.

As part of the consultation, the Council will be hosting events for the public to view the proposals and ask questions.

These will be held at RIBA North on 11 March (3pm – 7pm) and 15 March (10am – 2pm)

Following the consultation, any changes will be made to the design and the proposed measures will be signed off by the Council which will then issue a tender to procure contractors to carry out work on the scheme. It is expected the works will be started by late summer 2025, completing in April 2026.
