Mr &Mrs

TEREL & CHRISLA

KEY

WHO ARE YOU AS A COUPLE? The Keys, we are a fun-loving energetic Christian couple that enjoys life and lives it to the fullest. We make every effort to remember to keep friendship at the forefront of the marriage. One day we were talking and thought it would be cool to share some of our positivity with the world. That is when we started our “KEYping Up With With The Keys” Facebook page. The Instagram page and YouTube channel followed. This is a way to invite people to join us on our journey full of Love, Light, and Laughter. WHAT THINGS DO YOU ADMIRE ABOUT YOUR SPOUSE? TEREL TO CHRISLA: “ I admire the fact that Chrisla has a strong Christian background with the ability to share Biblical knowledge and make it edible so it can be clearly understood. I love her wittiness, her congenial spirit, and her exceptional organization skills.”

The Keys are a young, fun, loving, and energetic married couple that enjoys life and lives it to the fullest. They have been married for 1 year and 7 months, engaged for 1 prior, dated for 2 years prior, but were platonic friends 9 whole years before all of that! Just a little background information on the two, Terel Key is a native of Jackson, MS, and attended Jackson State University where he earned his Bachelors of Science with an emphasis in Mass Communications degree. He is proud a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. He currently works in the department of Exceptional Children at a local high school in Memphis, TN. He also owns his own automotive, commercial, and residential window tinting company as well as a video editing company. Chrisla Key attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in Knoxville, TN where she earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree. She then earned a Master’s of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Memphis, and a Doctorate in Nursing Practice degree from the University Health Science Center. She is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She currently is a practicing Family Nurse Practitioner at a children’s hospital in Memphis, TN and she is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Memphis and Austin Peay State University.

CHRISLA TO TEREL: “ I admire Terel’s heart. If you want to know what a genuine heart looks like, then his is a great example. I love his footloose fancy free take on life, how he always brings laughter to even the gloomiest situations, and how he is so delicate with me.” HOW DO YOU PREPARE YOURSELF TO FUNCTION AS YOUR BEST SELF IN YOUR ROLE AS A SPOUSE? TEREL: “ I pray and ask God to guide me to be a better person and spouse. I also receive positive advice from other Christian married male figures and take heed to that wisdom. CHRISLA: “My preparation began before entering into a relationship. I read what the Lord defined as love in I Corinthians. Having a strong personality, I also had to seek the Lord for understanding regarding the role of a wife and what submission really meant. The Lord helped me understand that if I wait on the person He had for me, then that ‘he’ would be a follower of Christ. If I submit to my husband and my husband is submitting to Christ, then I am truly submitting to Christ through my husband.”

HOW DO YOU UTILIZE YOUR DIFFERENCES INDIVIDUALLY AS ASSETS TO YOU AS A COUPLE? TEREL: “Details are not my strong suit; however, Chrisla’s attention to detail is impeccable. Her ability to plan with the details in mind are a tremendous help not only with running our household, but also with our KEYping Up With The Keys projects, and the many trips we have enjoyed.”

WHO IS THE MR AND MRS THAT PEOPLE DON’T GET TO SEE? Funny thing about marrying your friend is there is no need to put on airs. The Keys that people see out and about and on social media are exactly who we are behind closed doors. We love the lighter side of life! Just yesterday, we started salsa dancing in the middle of the room because we both heard a catchy Latin tune. It is who we are. Every now and again, we happen to catch some of our antics on video. Lol.

CHRISLA: “Terel is more gifted in the area of mass communications than I am as this was his collegiate training. I do all right, but it is definitely his gift. Since that is his strength, he does 95% of all of our video editing and social media marketing. On more personal note, his footloose and fancy free take on life truly helped me to loosen up from my type A, but fun personality.”

WHAT IS A SCRIPTURE THAT YOU BOTH USE AS YOU FUNCTION IN A PARTNERSHIP? A mainstay in our relationship is constantly measuring our love against the ruler God gave us in 1 Corinthians 13: 1-13.

WHAT DOES PARTNERSHIP IN MARRIAGE MEAN TO YOU? “When a husband and wife come together to make the best decision for the family by communicating and bringing their individual ideas to the table to develop the team goal for the family unit.”

AS PARTNERS IN MARRIAGE, WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL? WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRIFICE TO OBTAIN IT? Our ultimate goal is to be the best spouses we can be for one another, and to be the best role models for our future children and our peers by living a life that is pleasing to God and still having loads of fun along the way. Why? Because our happiness rests in the will of the Lord. We, then would have the duty to be that example to our babies and our peers. Essentially, we love to spread light and great positive energy to those around us. What are we willing to sacrifice? In order for any goal to be realized, hard work and time would need to be sacrificed. However, the Keys, we as a couple, have always marched to the tune of our own drum. By being our most authentic selves, we always stand to risk sacrificing people in our lives that may consider our unique take on life as simply “not their cup of tea”, and that is okay.

Dating IDEAS

BY: MR & MRS ROACH

Dismiss every misconception that you have about Dating, be open-minded, and expect to have fun! Who says that Dating has to be anything other than what you want it to be? No one- it’s up to you how creative you want your predetermined moment of eminence to be! It is also important to note that Dating is for anyone: married, engaged, and yes, SINGLE.

DON’TS

DO’S

IDEAS of the MONTH

• • • • • •

Agree to set this time aside together. Determine frequency and be consis tent (once a month or every week). Decide who gets to choose the date (deciding together is best). Anticipate it. Be THERE while you’re on the date. Have FUN.

• •

Avoid making independent plans and expect the other to be as excited as you are. Steer clear of allowing your Date Night to take the back seat of things that appear to be more pressing.

17 | LOVE MARRIAGE & PARTNERSHIP | THE REVIEW

PARIS NIGHT WITHOUT LEAVING HOME You decorate your home like a restaurant in a foreign country. Make it cheesy as possible while keeping it looking nice. Decorating is easy, use construction paper and things you find at a craft store. Then you have a friend dress up like a waiter and speak in the accent of that country. GO FLY A KITE Flying a kite! Sounds a little silly, but hey, we got to let the fun inside of us out sometime, and why not do it with the one we love. GIVE BACK Giving back to the community can bring you and your date closer together. A sense of peace and good fortune will bond you. Whether you opt to brighten the day of the elderly, serve food to the homeless, clean up a local beach or engage in countless other opportunities, be sure to choose a volunteering activity that is meaningful to both of you. A MOMENT IN TIME For the mature couple, seal your time together by constructing and burying a time capsule. Gather memorabilia that symbolizes your love for one another. A wedding invitation, saved wine cork, concert/plane ticket, copy of children’s birth records, meaningful photos, love letters and anything else that is unique to the story of your love. Be sure to include a note to the capsule’s future retrievers.

Matt ine GUILLAUME

Matt ine

There is most likely a personal stylist behind the scenes planning each look, or pulling pieces of clothing from all over the world to get someone the look that they want. Things can look great from outside, with all of the cool clothes, celebrities, birthday parties, funerals, and nonstop events, but every job has its perks, and there is a lot of work to do. Mattine Guillame works with clients to define his or her individual style. To start the process, she meets with her clients for a consultation to establish their desired appearance and lifestyle. Guillame shares that she even goes through their closet and removes dated pieces, and shop for clothes that will help create new styles and conquer past insecurities. After she’s collected all the necessary pieces, she will create full outfits from head to toe, and photograph the ensemble so her clients will have a complete look every time they get dressed. Personal styling is not limited to individual clients however, and she can work in other realms of fashion such as shows, or styling outfits for photo shoots. Guillame started her company with twenty dollars. She used twenty dollars to help style her first client. This included the trip to the thrift store, gas money, and a great deal of passion. Her friend asked and Guillame told her she would charge twenty dollars to recreate her look for her big event. A little known fact, Guillame had to put in a few dollars to throw in the shoes but they made it happen. From there she said to herself, “I can create a side hustle. I would style myself with thrift store clothing like, Goodwill and people would asked me how do you put such nice pieces together. I would explain that the outfit cost me less than $5.00, and instantly I would draw potential clients’ attention.” Slowly but surely she was putting outfits together for clients, running a successful t-shirt line, and hosting workshops at colleges on how to style on a budget. Starting and developing her company in Miami, FL, Guillame worked for a couple boutique shops in Bal Harbor and learned from top professionals on how to sale a brand and show people value in the brand. She worked for Bakers Shoe Store and Saks Fifth Ave having over 11 years of retail/ sales experience. Shortly after working at Saks Fifth Ave., Guillame went from having one client to getting five clients a week. After leaving Saks Fifth Ave, she officially started her business, Tame Your Style. She has only been in business for two years now but loves it. Her nights and weekends are filled with workshops and shopping sprees. Guillame insightfully shares, “I learned that when you find your purposes, you will start creating opportunities for others to follow their dreams. It's that simple.”

Shalondria HILL

.............................................................................................. Shalondria stepped out on faith with the love and support of her husband Calvin on January 15, 2016. After almost 20 years of dedication and service to children, families and communities in Mississippi, she now devotes her time and talents to her dream and passion, Open Invitation Stationery Boutique. As creative director and owner, she still serves the aforementioned, just in a different capacity. As an independent young woman who once dreamed of living a single life and working in the corporate world, never did she imagine that she would be a wife, mother and entrepreneur. God definitely had greater plans for her life. After creating stationery for her own wedding in 1999 and again after the birth of her children, Cameron Alexander and Skylar Kiersten, at the time she didn’t realize that God was continuing to set the course for her life. Her love for fine papers and gorgeous typography set the wheels in motion. What began as a hobby turned into her passion. Others noticed her unique talent for design, began requesting her custom stationery and so the life she’d dreamed of was birthed. Open Invitation Stationery Boutique is a full service stationery and gift boutique based in the Jackson, Mississippi area. Our goal is to assist clients in making all their occasions memorable, special and unique. Invitations and stationery set the tone for events and “love notes” we send to those we care so much for. We creatively craft all stationery by hand and take great pride in creating special memories to celebrate all the events in your life.

Past or KENNEBREW DAVID

A native of Louisanna, David Kennebrew launched Freedom Fellowship Church on January 17, 2016. This establishment was a blessing that came with much planning and preparation. The day not only marked the beginning of a new church but also the beginning of a new journey for him personally. This journey has been one of both ups and downs but more importantly this has been a journey of learning and growing. Kennebrew shares that one of the most important lessons he has learned is the importance of surrounding yourself with a great team. When he refers to his team, Kennebrew is not referring to just a group of people but a group of great individuals. He solely credits any success their church has had during this first year to the group of individuals that make up his team. With candor he explains, “So basically the lesson is this, it is one thing to surround yourself with people, it is a totally different thing to surround yourself with the right people.” When developing the planning team for his church, Kennebrew sincerely prayed that God would surround him with gifted individuals that would be able to see the vision for the church and would also embrace the vision for the church as if it was their own. “These individuals have been able to run with the vision and have been able to push me and my thinking, my creativity, and my faith. This team has made me better.” – David Kennebrew D. Kennebrew | FREEDOM FELLOWSHIP CHURCH Founder/Pastor w w w . d i s c o v e r f r e e d o m f e l l o w s h i p . o r g

Relationship Communication SUCCESSFUL

........................................................................................ It may come as a surprise to some that merely talking, the exchange of words and thoughts between two or more people, does not equate to communication – effective communication that is. Consider these seven habits as you establish and/or grow your relationships. LISTEN WITHOUT CONDEMNATION: Whenever you are engaging in a conversation, remember that the other person trusts you enough to share with you with no fear of judgement. Even if you don’t say anything that is viewed as judgmental during the conversation, guard your thoughts against judgement. Not doing so could impact your thoughts, feelings, or actions towards them later on. USE WORDS WITH NO COATING: At times, you may feel as if you cannot be completely truthful because you fear that you will hurt them. When this happens, you may find yourself sprinkling sugar over your words to avoid telling the whole truth. Coating your words can be misleading for them and restricting for you. There is a way to use your words wisely, and still be completely truthful. BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR WORDS: Being that opportunities wrapped in a particular set of circumstances do not present themselves more than once, you must choose your words wisely. Justifying what you say using, “I just have to speak my mind…” is acceptable only when you are choosing to allow your spirit to control your mind. Too often, when we “speak our mind”, we are really speaking from a place where we choose to allow our emotions to control our thoughts. AVOID CRAFTINESS: If you find yourself letting a conversation brew well before it actually takes place, where you craft the other person’s responses, you are unnecessarily tampering with your emotions. Avoid being emotionally disturbed and viewing the other person inappropriately because of comments you’ve developed in your own mind. Allow the other person to communicate with you in their own truth. TALK WITHOUT COVETOUSNESS: It is not a comfortable feeling to genuinely engage in a conversation only to be met with words that are dripping with thirst. Refrain from abusing someone’s listening ear with words and thoughts that stem from longing and desiring what someone else has. DODGE THE COPOUT: The copout is that opportune, yet evasive moment where you find yourself using phrases like whatever, that’s okay, or I don’t care. The irony is that it is not whatever, it is not okay, and you do care. We often find ourselves using these elementary colloquialisms, not because we don’t feel like talking at that particular time, but because we have not learned how to communicate beyond our feelings. Depending on the value of the relationship, you have three options: say nothing (some comments and behaviors don’t deserve your response), agree to talk at a better time, talk through whatever the problem is. TAKE CONTROL: Taking control is not about dominating the conversation or dictating the other person’s thoughts or feelings. Honestly, that type of behavior and thinking typically yields an unfavorable outcome. Instead, being responsible and taking control of your thoughts, words, and actions places you in a much more effective position for communicating. Maintaining positivity while truthfully sharing what you think and feel will have a greater impact beyond the conversation.

TRAVEL

With a background stemming from the financial industry as a branch operations manager, Sasha Espada stayed within that field for most of her adult career. The Trinidad native says that most aren’t aware that her first career choice was in the culinary field as a chef. A tugging sensation that made Espada feel as though she was destined to do great things led her to realize that an “executive” job title did not bring her happiness.

“I was still searching for something to create… that I can call my own. I switched careers and climbed the management ladder within one year in my former financial company. But have you ever felt like something was still missing?” In 2013 Espada purchased her current company because of her family’s love of travel, and also invested in another home based business opportunity. It was during this time she was able to work on SELF - personal development and interacting with those who have achieved extreme to uncommon success. This experience transitioned her mentally from the introverted girl from Trinidad to a mentally ready and able business owner. The key, she explains is “to surround yourself with others that are more successful than you.” This habit led to the realization that she was attracting many aspiring female entrepreneurs and business owners to her network. That sparked something in her. “Imagine what we can build if more men and women worked together, uplifted and empowered each other to do big and great things?” That desire has since created many different events, functions and business ventures. Most recently, Espada has launched a movement called Royal Vision Voyage in conjunction with other successful business owners in their own industries. This event is centered around allowing predominantly women, and now men, to live life through travel while being surrounded by those who can impress upon them the principles of business, beauty, mental well-being and partnerships. The corporate career woman turned entrepreneur and empowerment developer expressed that the biggest thing that she had to do was believe that it is possible. Still a work in progress, with over 600 clients in her data base and a movement that’s growing every year, Espada explains, “Now I’m truly happy and not afraid to push the barriers.”

Graduation is a transitional benchmark where preparation meets a wealth of possibilities. For Denieshia Spencer, life really started after graduating high school, as she ventured off into the "real world". She remembers being introduced to and becoming addicted to the high of the night life. It all looked so glamorous - the drinking, the partying, and the dating. Spencer reflects, “I was so mesmerized by it that I took a job at a night club. That resulted in becoming an exotic dancer at only nineteen. I continued on with that lifestyle until I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. I attempted to live life in a better manner which lasted until after I gave birth.” Shortly after, she returned to the lifestyle of partying and drinking until she found what she thought was love, but turned out to be a physically and mentally abusive relationship. Wanting a way out, but being afraid led to battling depression, anger, and deep hurt. It was at this time Spencer was invited to a women's empowerment tour called "Beauty Behind Bars". It sounded interesting and something told her that she needed to be there but she never attended. Missing three of them following that one, she saw that God has a way of getting your attention when he really wants it. “I was contacted via Facebook by founder of Beauty Behind Bars, Tiffany Love. She ministered to me that day concerning my life and I've been on fire for God ever since.” Now Vice President of Beauty Behind Bars Mississippi chapter and a national spokeswoman for the brand, Spencer travels with a team of women who are on a mission to free other women from self-imprisonment. “Women like the woman I once was.”

ONE 1 FEBRUARY 2016 - FAEBRUARY 2017

anniversary Thank you to everyone who have graced the pages of

over the past year. Each of you have made every issue memorable and special. We are looking forward to many more featured couples in partnership and positive people doing great things around the world.

Have you ever watched a couple engaged in a ballroom dance? After careful observation, we have learned that the beauty and fascination of the couple’s execution has little to do with the ability to dance in comparison to their ability to communicate with each other. Clear communication and deliberate attentiveness are crucial for safety and the general success of the dance. Where the Lead initiates movement and the Follow maintains that movement, the overall goal is to move in a synchronized or complimentary fashion. Dancers most skilled at this craft have the ability to connect in such a way that the Lead can include the Follow’s unique capabilities, thoughts, and suggestions into their own design and choices of movements. Think about what we have just shared in terms of relationships. The concepts of the Lead and Follow are really about identity, submission, and functioning in individual roles to achieve something that is captivating. There may be a gifting that naturally comes with an independent dancer, but there is a responsive discipline that is required when dancing with a partner. Whether married or single, the same principles apply. In a relationship, between spouses or the communion between an individual and God, there must be a personal awareness and confidence held by each partner, a willing and trusting submission to the “Lead”, an understanding and inclusion of the “Follow”, and the ability to function in individual roles with a genuine tenacity. Every life, every relationship has the ability to appeal to onlookers as a graceful performance, prompting the question, “How do they do that?” The answer, as we’ve expressed, is when that person or couple brings into harmony their individual gifts with the discipline of proper communication. Perhaps the most promising thing about proper communication is that you get to truly enjoy the dance.
