SONGKRAN or’s l

t i d Enote: Coo Meltdown! By Dave Stamboulis

Beer Republic

While Songkran is all about wet, it is also about heat, and plenty of it. Bangkok residents often escape northwards, where temperatures are slightly cooler and where Chiang Mai has a reputation of putting on a mean Songkran party. Come evening, the north’s capital certainly can’t compare to the City of Angels, but the past years have seen the arrival of some great new nightspots to go along with the longstanding hangouts popular to locals and visitors alike. Here’s your advance guide to some of the best to go beat the heat and get rehydrated in.

North Gata Jazz

Dusit D2 Mix Bar

Beer Republic www.beerrepublicchiangmai.com 28 Nimmanhaemin Road, Lane 11. Tel. 053-216-568 or 081-531-4765.

Dusit D2 Mix Bar dusitd2chiangmai.dusit.com 100 Chang Klan Road. Tel. 053-999-999.

Nimmanhaemin Road has become the Chiang Mai equivalent of Bangkok’s Thonglor, with plenty of trendy cafes and pubs fueling the chic nightlife renaissance. And Beer Republic is one of Nimmanheimin’s best spots, serving up fifteen different kinds of gourmet draught beers, ranging from Belgian Trappist ales to five different types of wheat beer, including Weihenstephaner Vitus Weizen-Bock, voted ‘World’s Best Beer’ in 2012. You can get Fine de Claire oysters from France and German sausages, along with an amazing array of fusion dishes to complement your quaffs, and there is both outdoor and indoor seating in this stylish new two-level establishment. A well-recommended and popular spot, so you might want to book ahead for dinner.

One of Chiang Mai’s most longstanding popular hangouts, offering impromptu jam sessions, open-mike nights, and plenty of top-notch live jazz performances from both local and international artists. This bohemian nightspot is packed to the gills on most evenings, with the crowd flowing out into the street up along the north side of Chiang Mai’s old city moat. Drinks aren’t expensive, the music is quite good, and the social scene is one of the city’s best, ranging from local Thais to backpackers to plenty of oldschool jazz aficionados. Musicians get a warm welcome here, and the vibe is most decidedly unpretentious.

The urban contemporary Mix is housed in the swank Dusit D2 Hotel and, true to its name, doesn’t conform to any particular style. There are deep couches with plush pillows, natural rattan lounges, and uberhip and abstract benches on which to call home, and the sleek leather armchairs and colorful carpets add plenty of tasteful chic to the glowingly lit surroundings. Lest you concentrate only on the ambience, the mixologists behind the bar will make sure you pay attention with signature cocktails like the Dobber (gin, apple juice, kaffir lime leaf, and tonic), champagne cocktails, creative martinis, and delicious ‘mocktails’ for those who are driving.

Back in the 1980s, Chiang Mai was a sleepy town without any live Western music venues, and this small bar on the banks of the Ping River changed all that. Some thirty years later, The Riverside is a Chiang Mai institution, renowned for its laidback atmosphere, excellent live tunes, and fantastic food and drink, all dished up in a gorgeous eighty-year-old traditional Thai mansion that features two open-air decks with waterfalls and lush gardens. Three bands play here nightly, playing everything from rock to hip hop, laid-back jazz, and golden oldies, and the Riverside’s floating boat offers nightly dinner cruises on the Ping as well – an excellent warmup for the party-filled night ahead.

So named because its present owners are everything but Irish (Kiwi, Australian, and Thai), this busy pub is an excellent spot to catch up on all the major sporting events while choosing from a vast selection of imported beers. Just about anything you might crave from a proper Western pub can be found here, ranging from excellent burgers or apple pie to dart boards and quiz nights. The Guinness here is brewed in Dublin, and the pub also serves up Blackthorne and Olde English cider. There is live Irish country music played upstairs several nights a week, big screen sports run all evening, and there is even a bakery making some of Chiang Mai’s freshest bread.

One of Chiang Mai’s oldest pubs, this firmly entrenched favorite located in the Night Bazaar has both an air-con bar and an outdoor terrace looking over all the action. The alcohol options here are pretty endless, with a great selection of beer, wine, and cocktails to choose from, including Fullers ESB, Crumpton Oaks Pear Cider, and the Red Lion claims to be the cheapest place in town to get a pint of draught Guinness. The cocktails here are certainly a great bargain, going for 99 baht a glass, with Friday and Saturday nights seeing a line of Mai Tais and Singapore Slings lined up along the bar. Live sports are shown on 50inch HD plasma TVs.

Sonic Playground Sonic Playground www.sonicplaygroundcm.com 177 Sri Poom Road, Chotana Mall. Tel. 082-225-3064.

VW BARS While they might not have the air-con and pinstripes of their counterparts, these converted Volkswagen buses have become great spots to people-watch and sip cheap drinks, and they do have a lot of character. After all, the VW bus, also known as the Transporter, was the icon of counterculture in the United States in the 1960s, with the colorfully painted ‘hippie vans’ becoming famed for the mobile and alternative lifestyle, as well as a symbol of freedom and independence. They don’t have fixed addresses but can usually be found along the moat just north of Tapae Gate or just inside the gate itself, and you are pretty sure to see one or two as fixtures along the Walking Street night market promenade.

Just in its final stages of launching, the new posh Sonic Playground will be the biggest bar and entertainment complex in all of northern Thailand. The mammoth party spot not only features four different music venues and 4,000 square feet of space, but it also has swim-up pool bars and a ‘dayclub’ for those who want to party while the sun is still out, with the swimming pools surrounding DJs spinning electronic and house music, all encircled by cabanas and lounges. Located in the same location that housed Chiang Mai’s famous ladyboy show at the Playhouse, this mother of all entertainment venues hotspot promises music, fun, and plenty more.

It’s A DOG’S

LIFE

R

egardless of whether you like to feed them, avoid them, or chase them away with a combination of rocks and harsh language, there’s no denying that Thailand, in general, and Bangkok, in particular, has its fair share of soi dogs (i.e., street dogs). It’s difficult to reliably estimate the number of stray dogs in Thailand, but there are anywhere between 300,000 and 500,000 soi dogs in Bangkok alone. Reducing these numbers can be a daunting task, especially since euthanasia isn’t an acceptable practice, as Thailand is a largely Buddhist country that forbids the taking of any life.

By Voicu Mihnea Simandan

Luckily, even though the provincial and local administrations seem to be always busy with other ‘more pressing’ matters, there are still people out there who very much care and are willing to put in the time and effort to reduce the number of unwanted dogs and cats. One such selfless animal lover is Gregg Tully, a 37-year-old American who has been acting as Managing Director at Soi Dog Foundation (SDF) for more than a year now. Based in Mai Khao, Phuket, from where he coordinates the efforts of other like-minded volunteers, Gregg joined Soi Dog in October 2012 because it “has an excellent reputation throughout the international animal welfare community for running effective programs that make a lasting impact.” That is exactly what Soi Dog Foundation has been doing since 2003 when it was founded by Margot Homburg Park and English couple John and Gill Dalley. Since then, the organization has acquired a not-for-profit status and is registered as a charitable organization, not only in Thailand, but also in the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, France, and the Netherlands. Their international recognition is remarkably well deserved because, up until January 2014, SDF managed to sterilize over 60,000 stray dogs and cats, thus staying true to their local and international mission: “To help the homeless, neglected, and abused dogs and cats of Thailand” and “to set an example for the Asian region on how to humanely reduce the number of unwanted dogs and cats through spaying and neutering, and to better the lives and living conditions of the stray dogs and feral cats of Asia.”

There are an estimated 50,000 soi dogs in Phuket alone, but Gregg is confident that this number will gradually decrease as SDF spays and neuters more and more dogs. Referring to the problems of the thousands of innocent people who fall victim annually to dog bites and attacks, the Managing Director at Soi Dog Foundation is of the opinion that “widespread sterilization reduces street dog populations, until there are so few dogs that dog bites will become a minor problem. Education about safety around street dogs, including identifying potentially aggressive dogs, is also part of the solution.” The recent scandal involving the illegal dog-meat trade between Thailand and Vietnam has not only been closely monitored by SDF, but they have also organized a successful campaign to try and stop it. “A couple of years ago, many large trucks smuggled dogs to slaughterhouses and meat markets in Vietnam, but now as a result of the pressure Soi Dog has put on the smugglers, only a few small trucks make that journey,” claims Gregg Tully proudly. “Stopping the dog-meat trade is challenging largely because of the widespread corruption and bribery involved, but where there’s a will, there’s a way, and we won’t give up,” Gregg declares. Although Soi Dog sterilized and vaccinated more than 10,000 animals last year and their spay/neuter programs continue to grow in Phuket and in Bangkok, Gregg has still met with many frustrations along the way. “It’s very disappointing when people don’t take responsibility for their pets, such as by abandoning them when they get sick or moving away from Thailand and leaving their pets behind.” Soi Dog’s main shelter is in Mai Khao in Phuket, close to the airport, but they also have a clinic in Bangkok that is the hub of their growing sterilization program in the Thai capital. All of Soi Dog’s programs are only possible because of donations from people in Thailand and around the world. “Many people sponsor a dog at our shelter, and we send the donors regular updates and photos of the dog. We welcome volunteers at our shelter in Phuket who walk dogs and socialize dogs and cats, so the animals feel comfortable enough around people that they can be adopted. This is a great way to bond with dogs and cats in need,” concludes Gregg. To find out more details about how you can sponsor a dog or a cat, become a volunteer, adopt an abandoned animal, or help in the fight against the dog meat trade, visit Soi Dog Foundation’s excellent website at www.soidog.org, join their 400,000+ people Facebook community at fb.com/SoiDogPageInEnglish, or email them for general enquiries at info@soidog.org.

PARKINSON’S DISEASE

THE CASE FOR EARLIER DETECTION As populations continue to age, more families are being touched by Parkinson’s disease. Though the condition remains incurable, earlier detection and expert care are giving patients more effective treatment options and better life quality.

pression to anxiety and obsessive/compulsive behaviors. The impact on sleep can be significant – some patients report episodes of shouting, kicking and trashing occurring during sleep.

The global ‘graying’ trend shows no signs of slowing down. While people are enjoying longer lifespans, the aging trend has a downside, too: More adults are being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, the second most prevalent neuro-degenerative brain disorder after Alzheimer’s disease.

Diagnosing Parkinson’s typically occurs after a patient begins noticing physical symptoms and decides to see their doctor. These initial symptoms may include slow movement, leg stiffness, decreased arm swing while walking, rigid body, slower or softer speech and small handwriting.

Symptoms & diagnosis

About one percent of senior adults in industrialized countries have Parkinson’s. Thailand’s rate is growing but remains lower – the Thai Red Cross Society estimates 0.42 percent of adults over 60 have Parkinson’s. Past generations of Thais called Parkinson’s san-ni-bat-look-nok (‘shaking palsy’). While the disease has been around for centuries, it’s still somewhat mysterious. To better understand this serious health threat, Better Health turned to Dr. Oraporn Sitburana, a neurologist at Bumrungrad’s Neuroscience Center who specializes in treating patients with Parkinson’s and other movement disorders.

The onset of symptoms

According to Dr. Oraporn, the most common symptoms of Parkinson’s include slowness of movement, muscle rigidity, and resting tremors that lessen with movement. The onset of movement symptoms typically occurs after the patient’s supply of dopamine-generating cells has declined by about 60 percent. The loss of these cells, which are produced by the substantia nigra Recognizing these symptoms is an important asstructure in the midbrain, deprives the patient pect of correctly diagnosing the disease. of the neurotransmitter chemical that regulates body movement. Doctors also review the patient’s medical history and conduct a physical examiParkinson’s research suggests that it takes from nation during the diagnostic four to ten years of cell degeneration before a pa- process. mine uptake abnormalities. Neurologists who specialize in Parkinson’s typically can identify the disease with an accuracy rate above 90 percent.

Earlier, better treatments

As with most medical conditions, patients can benefit greatly if Parkinson’s is diagnosed earlier, when treatment outcomes are better and less traumatic. Earlier detection and treatment enhances the impact of lifestyle changes, such as good nutrition and exercise habits, that boost quality of life and emotional well-being. It’s important to see your doctor if you experience any Parkinson’s symptoms. Today there are more and better medications for reducing symptoms, as well as other treatments that may increase longevity and improve quality of life during the disease’s later stages.

Treatments and stages

For patients in the early and middle stages of Parkinson’s disease, most treatments involve medication that targets the neurotransmitters producing dopamine, as well as choline, adrenaline and serotonin. The most widely used medicines include dopamine substrate, dopamine agonists and dopamine inactivation enzymes. By the time the disease reaches its later stages, nerve cell damage is severe. Patients typically have great difficulty with everyday activities and rely more on family members and caregivers for help. A patient’s movements can be further impaired as a result of side effects and/or drug resistance due to long term use of medication. If medication loses effectiveness, doctors then consider additional treatment options such as deep brain stimulation, insertion of a subcutaneous apomorphine pump and intrajejunal duodopa infusions.

Developing treatments

While the search for a Parkinson’s cure continues, Dr. Oraporn notes that ongoing research studies are showing positive signs for the future, including more effective symptom-relief medications with improved side effect profiles. Research on alternative medication delivery methods – skin patches and below-the-skin inserts, among others – appears promising as well. Greater resources are being allocated to research on early-stage Parkinson’s, the period prior to the onset of movement impairment symptoms. It’s hoped this will lead to remedies to slow disease progression, and perhaps to a Parkinson’s cure. Scientists continue to explore genetic, stem cell and other therapies; one such therapy being tested uses a virus as a courier to deliver neurotropic factor genes that can restore normal movement functions.

Senior society

In closing, Dr. Oraporn reflects on the implications of a graying nation: “Thailand is an aging society. Families need to be sure that seniors are properly taken care of. Having a loving, caring family makes a huge difference in living a happier and healthier senior life. It makes seniors stronger physically and mentally, they take better care of themselves, and they reduce the burden felt by their family.”

How does Parkinson’s affect the brain?

Parkinson’s disease is caused by the progressive degeneration of dopamine-producing nerve cells located in the substantia nigra structure of the brain-stem. These cells help control motor movement; their decline eventually leads to dysfunction of a patient’s body movements.

Recognizing signs and symptoms

Nerve cell degeneration is a gradual process that eventually produces a variety of physical symptoms. When Parkinson’s disease is detected earlier, patients have more effective treatment options for reducing symptoms and enjoying a longer, better quality of life.

Consult your doctor if you experience any of the following Parkinson’s symptoms: • Tremors; • Slow movement; • Muscle stiffness; • Soft, weak voice; • Lack of facial expressiveness; • Hunched or stooped posture; • Reduced sense of smell; • Chronic constipation; • Yelling or punching during sleep; • Small or cramped handwriting.

very Bangkok daily, weekly, and monthly rag seems to run just about every other story on a new, snazzy eatery or cool foodie hangout, and who can argue this, especially given the burgeoning slow food revolution and cosmopolitan dining scene that has run amok in the city over the past few years. Yet it is nice to run into a bit of a different food story that really has ‘feel good’ written all over it for a change, which is certainly the case with the Courageous Kitchen. The Courageous Kitchen is the brainchild of Dwight Turner. Chances are you’ve probably run into him eating at one of your favorite restaurants somewhere around town. Not only is Dwight, who hails from Atlanta, a foodie, he is also the face behind the popular food blog “Bangkok Fatty,” creator of the gourmet food market Big Bite Bangkok, and co-founder of the website EatingThaiFood.com. Yeah, the guy knows his food and likes to eat. Gourmet cravings aside, Turner is also passionately committed to community and social empowerment, and spends all of his non-eating time running In Search of Sanuk, a volunteer organization he created that focuses on aiding survivors of torture and trauma, especially at-risk women and girls, by providing food, shelter, and educational support.

While working with refugee and migrant families in need over the past few years, Turner noticed that even after children had been enrolled in schools, many of them were still eating poorly at home, and so he sent over teachers to help give some basic nutrition training. He and they found that many of the teenagers who disengaged from most o activities appeared more comfortable and engaging in a kitchen setting. Thus was born the idea of using the kitchen as a classroom, to inspire confidence and learn about nutrition, as well as gaining vocational skills. The name The Courageous Kitchen comes from the Thai ‘krua poom jai.’ As Turner says, “Kitchens mirror the real world. They can be dark, dangerous war zones or sanctuaries of creativity and light.” He continues, “The kids here have a chance to be challenged and to develop courage in a safe environment, which is important since the children we’re working with come from poor and often broken homes.” Krua Poom Jai is supported by World Foods, a company producing ready-made cooking sauces that don’t include preservatives or artificial ingredients and that are 100% fresh and natural, and many of the recipes the children and teachers in The Courageous Kitchen create will feature some of World Food’s products. As a long-term goal, the project aims to build character and give the children skills that they can use in the future, whether it be setting up a business or furthering their culinary skills. World Foods Global Business Director May Foong is enthusiastic about the project, saying that the organization wishes to give disadvantaged kids a head start in learning about cuisine and personal skills, and adds that “we’re not only teaching the kids to cook, but also building confidence, educating about nutrition, and having fun!” One of the teachers at Krua Poom Jai is Christy Inouvong, a Laotian-American who recently came to Thailand to rediscover her culinary roots and teach English, along with giving of herself to volunteering with The Courageous Kitchen. One of her first

recipes made with the kids was called Crispy Crab Rangoon Wontons with Cream Cheese, a fusionfilled gourmet treat where the eager class stuffed cream cheese, crab, and spices into wontons for frying, served up with sweet chili dipping sauce. From here, things got a bit more daring, progressing to Massaman quesadillas, combining the fiery southern curry dish with Mexican tortillas and cheese. Getting Dwight Turner to share one of these recipes with me and following the kids’ lead and whipping up my own batch in the kitchen, I can safely vouch for them to be stamped gourmet ‘AAA’ all over, and it will be interesting to see what other delightful concoctions the kids can come up with in this positive bit of gourmet service being done on the ground level here in Bangkok. To read more about the Courageous Kitchen, to volunteer time as a guest chef, or learn about other community projects visit either www.bkkfatty.com/the-courageous-kitchen or Dwight Turner’s “In Search of Sanuk” website at www.insearchofsanuk.com.

s writers, be it novelists, bloggers, columnists, amateurs or professionals, writer’s block does not seem to evade the best (or worst) of us. While the internet offers a whole host of methods on how to approach the problem, many of us find that a simple change of scenery can boost our inspirational flow. Writing can sometimes feel like a lonely profession or activity, demanding that large blocks of time be devoted to it. The company of others alleviates solitude, so a perfect way to achieve a balance of concentration without feeling ostracized is to seek out environments that are lively, yet conducive, to work. Here are some discoveries that make the following places hidden gems for very different reasons.

Thonglor Art Village

Blink & you’ll miss the small entrance to Thonglor Art Village, between Thonglor 17 and 19. Crossing the threshold of the arcade, you’re immediately met with a cool shelter in the form of small eateries, shops, and cafés jigsawed together. First, there’s Casa Lapin, an excellent coffee bar, closed on weekends however. Directly behind is the stylish Tea Avenue, run by a young couple from Montreal and southern Thailand. The eclectic range of teas and the young enthusiasts’ knowledge is impressive. Not only are you given the choice between types (white, black, green, red, and even a rare yellow) and also the flavor, but then the decision of iced, hot, or sparkling. Various sweets and macaroons are on hand if you get peckish, and given its size and capacity, it’s impossible for it to ever get too busy, thus making it an ideal hideaway.

Café Bicycle

Situated immediately in front of the BTS Ploenchit station, the Café is a must for those of us who savor the aroma of coffee and rely on the obligatory caffeine kick to sharpen our wits. The café is ecofriendly with organic options available, the Sunday brunch looking particularly tempting. The large communal table is a hive of activity and a great place to work if you thrive off the energy; in contrast, the upstairs is a quieter option and the faint bustle of clients and easy-listening choice of music unobtrusive.

Benjasiri Park

For nature-lovers, there’s no substitute for a rustling breeze, the feel of grass under your feet, and the faded background noise of giggling children and chirping birds to inspire you to fervently scribble out ideas. Wi-Fi may be a challenge, but as an environment to gather together ideas, either alone or to brainstorm as part of a group, there is none better than the park located on

18 mango metro

APRIL 2014

Suhumkvit Road between sois 22 and 24 and is a personal preference of mine.

Tribeca

This New York themed restaurant is perfect for foodies and those who like to reward themselves after a hard slog. Offering large comfortable booths to sit back in and an all-day brunch available till 10 pm, rustled up by an authentic NewYork trained chef who takes his inspiration from famous restaurants around the city. Tribecas’ signature brunch dish is the eggs Benedict made with pancakes, maple-glazed pork belly with a poached egg. One that jumped off the dessert menu for me was the hot skillet cookie with a chocolate lava filling served with ice-cream. A generally quiet place, avoid the lunchtime rush however if you hope to get a good spot to settle into and get some writing done in between bites. Nihonmura Mall, 85 Thonglor 13

Elysian Tea House

Elysian Tea House is a haven in every sense of the word as it’s slightly off the beaten track (Soi Prommitr–Sukhumvit 49/1 connecting Sukhumvit 49 to Sukhumvit 39). The décor makes the experience, from the botanical entrance to the Moroccan inspired room with its blankets, poofs and copies of Rumi to the adjacent spacious old English room with a Laura Ashley feel, connected to an equally stylish balcony. Boasting 24 unique

house blends of locally sourced organic concoctions and an on-site bakery, it is ideal to sip and type the hours away without being disturbed. Serene is the best way to describe it here. Each infusion is eloquently named and has a romantic or spiritual meaning. Both the blends and the setting strike a tasteful balance, and it’s evident that someone’s heart has gone into the making and running of the place.

t might not be that obvious, but there’s actually a very strong community of bicycle riders not only in Bangkok, but throughout the entire Kingdom too. Among these velo fans, many have chosen to purchase a mountain bike so that they can ride it not only in the capital city, but also out-and-about in nature, where jungle trails and green vegetation provide a much-needed escape from a polluted urban environment. Among the most committed Bangkok-based mountain bike riders is Fausto Jose Izquiel, a 52-year-old Venezuelan, who has been living and raising a family in Thailand for the last 25 years. And he’s been riding his mountain bike ever since: “As soon as I arrived in Bangkok, I basically used my mountain bike to commute from home to work and back again. This was in the late 80s, and I might have well been the only farang on a bicycle on the streets of Bangkok at that time. Years went by, and I was never apart from my bike wherever I went in Thailand, and I made likeminded friends with whom I started exploring the Thai countryside and discovered great places for mountain biking.”

Fausto’s love for exercising and passion for mountain bikes led him to the decision, six years ago, to open a bicycle shop and spend 100% of his time promoting cycling in Thailand. He is now the proud director of Bike Zone, a shop specialized in selling and disseminating information about mountain bikes, road bikes, street bikes, and bikes for children. Believe it or not, there are fantastic places to ride mountains within close vicinity of Bangkok, not to mention the rest of Thailand. You can reach wonderful locations to ride a mountain bike within a two-hour car trip, in any direction, from the capital city. The most popular destinations for Bangkok cyclists are Khao Yai National Park in the northeast (where you can find the Khao Itho bike park), Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi in the north, the hilly areas of Pattaya and Rayong on the eastern coast, Kanchanaburi in the west, and Hua Hin further south of Bangkok. There’s no limit to the number of people who can join a mountain biking tour, but “there’s only one rule that people riding a mountain bike should never ever break: never ride alone,” Fausto strongly advises. “Having a friend or a riding partner with you on a trip will always help in case of an emergency, as they can assist or look for help if anything goes wrong. Apart from that, big groups do make the trip slower, but are much more fun!”

There are many mountain biking tours you can choose from. They have different levels of difficulty, so it is necessary to check each level before you commit to any trip. However, bike touring companies usually tend to categorize the level of skills necessary for each specific tour, so this should be very straight forward. “Most bike touring trips organized in Thailand are set to attract foreigners, both residents and people on vacations, but they provide good opportunities to have a close encounter with real Thai culture, food, and the local people you get to meet on the way,” says Fausto. As a mountain bike is suitable for all terrains, it is an ideal activity for people living in Thailand, where one can find both rolling hills and death-defying paths down steep mountain passes. “You can go mountain biking in Thailand all year round, and this is a tremendous advantage compared to many other countries,” says the director of Bike Zone. “Unfortunately there are no proper track marks set in place for the locations where mountain biking is the most popular. If in the future this situation will change, I believe it will encourage people to go out more on their bikes and explore the marvelous trails that Thailand has to offer.” For detailed information about clubs, events, shops, tours by region, maps, and cycling communities in Thailand, visit bicyclethailand.com, an excellent English-language web portal dedicated to promoting everything that has to do with cycling in Thailand. Alternatively, for a Thai-language forum about mountain biking, visit www.thaimtb.com. Bike Zone (www.bikezone.co.th) is located in the heart of Bangkok, on the second floor of Amarin Plaza. The shop can be reached via the BTS Chidlom station (exit E1). From there you can take the skywalk straight to the entrance of the shop. It’s only a 100-meter walk, and the guys at Bike Zone would love to have a look at your bicycle, so take it along with you (note: you can take your bicycle on the BTS for no additional cost). Bike Zone is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and their team of experienced mechanics will promise to provide all repairs and services to all types of bikes to the highest level of standards. So, just get out there to cycle and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Thailand!
