Between ฿& the River
I am always looking for places to escape to from Bangkok that offer a serene and unique travel experience, hopefully one that is radically different from the geography and culture here at home, yet at the same time not involving multiple time zones and having to suffer through jet lag. When I saw that there were direct flights from Bangkok to China’s Guilin, and that they only took three hours, I jumped on the chance to make a quick trip, heady at the thought of getting lost amidst the jagged limestone mountains and hanging rice terrace landscapes that I’d so often seen in photo books.

the Mountains By Dave Stamboulis
Guilin is one of China’s greenest and most pleasant cities, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, set on a series of connecting lakes, and surrounded by phenomenal karst topography, with hundreds of vertical limestone peaks jutting up across the horizon. While the city itself is an easy place to spend a few relaxing days, wandering along the lakes and in the abundant city parks festooned with traditional stone arch bridges and tall pagodas, the real appeal of a visit here lies outside of town. My girlfriend and I started our recent journey here with a visit to the ancient village of Xingping, which lies along the famed Li River. Immortalized in Chinese poetry and song, the Li flows for around 500 kilometers, of which the 100-kilometer stretch from Guilin to Yangshuo takes in the most stunning scenery. The karst peaks, reminiscent of Halong Bay in Vietnam or around Krabi here in Thailand, are everywhere, poking up into the sky, their jungle-clad walls plunging straight down into the whirling currents and eddies of the fast-flowing Li below. The Li scenery is considered to be one of China’s most riveting attractions, so much so that even the Chinese 20-yuan note has a section of the river and mountains imprinted on its backside.

Boat trips, ranging from bamboo rafts to more luxurious cruise boats, are the most popular way to enjoy the sights, but for the more intrepid, renting a bicycle or navigating on foot is a far more interesting way to go. The banks of the Li have centuries-old walking paths that traverse through orange groves and verdant farms, and paths wind their way up and through the limestone, even giving access to the summits of some of the sharp pinnacles. A fine example is that of Xianggong Mountain, a peak that required us to bicycle for an hour and then carry our bikes up a rather precipitous mountain trail to reach the entrance to the peak, which it turned out, actually had a long and easy approach available by road. Never mind, though. It made the views all the more stunning, watching the boat traffic on the Li below, with stone peaks standing like sentinels in the shadow of the sun, giving views more fit for birds than man. There is also a stunning view over Xingping and the hundreds of mountains bathed in the setting sun’s orange glow right above the village, accessible via a steep mountain path that requires clambering up several vertical ladders near the summit and then scrambling out on to some rock overlooks more suited for the local goats. Needless to say, some worldclass rock climbing routes have emerged from this area in the last few years, and one could spend months wandering through the little visited backcountry here, which most of the package boat cruise crowd completely misses.

spend several nights in different lodges here, hiking across the mountains to explore the different valleys and viewpoints by day, and chatting with the amiable Yao over local cuisine at night. While one runs into the odd foreign tourist here, they are dwarfed by the domestic crowd. Chinese tourism has soared in the past years, and during Chinese New Year and the Autumn Moon Festival in the fall, lodges are bursting past capacity point, and it is close to impossible to find a vacant room.
In addition to the mountains and rivers, this area is also noted for dazzling rice terraces, which tumble down from exquisitely sculpted fields that have been worked by the minority Yao and Zhuang people since the Yuan Dynasty in the mid 1200s. Known as the Dragon’s Backbone rice terraces, the fields are breathtaking year-round, although at their peak in late May, when they are irrigated for planting, or else in October, when they turn completely golden prior to harvest.
still reserved for those who want to do it the old-fashioned way, trekking out on foot into the hills and staying in large old wooden Yao houses with creaky stairs, cozy rooms, and superlative views over the surroundings. The Yao here are famed for their women’s hair, which they never cut during their lifetime. Not only do they not cut their hair, but they even pick up any strands that fall to the ground, and save them to weave into their existing coifs.
While the Chinese have built a ropeway cable car and made inroads into this gorgeous area, the best vantage points are

As we were coming out of the mountains from several days of trekking, we met several couples from Guangzhou, visiting here for the first time. They’d taken a high-speed train from Guangzhou, arriving in Guilin in around three hours, and were then heading off on an ambitious crossing of several valleys over the course of three days. One of the trekkers inquired as to where we were from and how we were enjoying the surroundings. He reminded me of the old Chinese saying that “the mountains and waters of Guilin are the best under heaven.” He added a few lines from the ancient poet Hanyu, who remarked that “the rivers look like blue silk ribbons and the mountains resemble emerald hairpins.” I thought to myself that while there may be a few more conveniences, crowds, and concessions, much of Hanyu’s observations were still exactly the same.

CAPOEIRA The rhythm
is gonna get you By Voicu Mihnea Simandan The Rio 2016 Olympic Games that took place last month brought a spontaneous worldwide interest in all things Brazilian, from travel to politics to traditional arts. The image of the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer on top of Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, the dire political crisis involving the Brazilian president, the Zika virus panic, and the various artistic representation of Brazilian culture have found their way all over the Internet. This spike in interest about Brazil will hopefully sustain itself so that the Brazilian people can reap the benefits of hosting such an expensive event. If you live in Bangkok, you can continue your fas-

cination with the largest country on the American continents by participating in the activities organized by Capoeira Angola Bangkok. Capoeira is a martial art and ritual combat dance borne from the influences brought by slaves from the African continent into Brazil. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, the Portuguese brought great numbers of slaves into Central and South America. With them came their African cultural heritage that mixed elements of dance, fight, ritual, and music into what is known as capoeira today. Capoeira’s three main styles are Angola, Regional, and Contemporânea, with
Capoeira Angola, the form you can experience in Bangkok, being the more traditional one. As the name suggests, its roots are from Angola, a southern African country that was almost depopulated during the slave trade. Capoeira Angola Bangkok has been running as a nonprofit organization since 2006 and operates under the leadership of Phu Huynh, a capoeira practitioner from the United States. Although of Vietnamese origins, Phu Huynh has been studying, training, and teaching capoeira since 2001, when he witnessed his first live capoeira demonstration while living in Chicago. “It captivated me,” recalls Huynh.
As a martial artist, his primary references in capoiera are Contramestre Beto de Freitas and Mestre Cobra Mansa, two highly respected Brazilian masters. Huynh has been in Thailand for the past ten years, where he works as a researcher, but his passion for capoeira has never foundered. Speaking about the interest in capoeira in Bangkok, Phu Huynh confesses that “it is somewhat limited, perhaps due to the foreignness and lack of familiarity to capoeira.” He hopes that this will change, as it seems that more and more people are looking into what Brazilian culture, arts, and traditions are all about. “Capoeira allows someone the rare opportunity to learn a new cultural art, while enriching their understanding of musical rhythms and improving their health and fitness,” explains Huynh. “It also is learned in an inherently social context, so students naturally develop new friendships and community through capoeira.” Although, at first sight, capoeira might not be for someone who is not flexible or not having a lean body, in fact, capoeira is for everyone. “It is especially for those willing to learn and try something new and overcome their own physical and mental challenges,” states Huynh. A major misconception about capoeira is that it is merely a sport that is practiced for fitness or as a martial art used as an effective fighting technique. In fact, it is a rich cultural expression with a long history. “Learning the culture, music, and history of the art is just as essential for understanding capoeira, as are the martial art applications.”
Of course, in Thailand, capoeira is not nearly as popular as muay thai nor more popular than any other Asian martial art. But this is something to be expected, as many find the musical, cultural, and Portuguese language aspects of capoeira particularly challenging. Nevertheless, Capoeira Angola Bangkok is made up of a thriving group of people. “Our students are a mix of Thai nationals, expats, and international travelers visiting Bangkok for a short period. They come from very diverse backgrounds and professions, but are connected by their passion to learn capoeira,” Huynh affirms. The organization also has a very strong kid’s program, which, according to their website – capoeira-angola-bangkok.com – is designed “to promote a sense of well-being in children by developing their sense of self-worth and self-esteem through social interaction and play rooted in respect for
oneself and others.” The capoeira classes take place on the third floor of Silom Plaza on Silom Road in Bangkok. The nearest Skytrain station is BTS Chong Nonsi on the Silom line (take Exit 3). Practitioners must wear long pants, a comfortable shirt that can be tucked in (no tank tops), and flat shoes. It costs 2,000 baht per month for unlimited training classes or 400 baht per session (200 baht for students, interns, volunteers). Classes are open to all adults and teenagers aged 15 or above and instruction is conducted in both Thai and English. There’s an outdoor class in a public park on the last Saturday of every month. If you want to find out more about Capoeira Angola Bangkok, you can follow them on Facebook – fb.com/Capoeira.Angola.Bangkok – or call at 089-206-9495 in Thai or English.

WHY ARE KIDNEY STONES SO PAINFUL? By Dr. Sarit Hutakowit, Urologist, Urology Center, Bumrungrad Hospital
Pain is our body’s way of saying that something inside isn’t right. It can be sharp, dull, intermittent, or constant, but one thing is certain: kidney stones can be extremely painful. Which can beg the questions of why they are so painful, and what can be done to prevent this condition? Kidney stones come in all shapes, sizes, textures, and colors depending on their mineral makeup. The smallest stones often pass with little to no pain but it’s the larger stones that cause obstructions that have people really worried. Kidney stones are hard mineral deposits in the bladder that cause excruciating pain when passed during urination. However, pain and other adverse symptoms can occur long before the stone makes its way out of the body. In fact, it can begin as soon as the stone moves from the kidneys and down into the ureters, the two thin tubes that funnel urine from the kidneys to the bladder. As the crystal mass makes its way into the ureter, it can create a partial or total blockage. Because the kidneys continue excreting urine and the fluid cannot properly drain, pressure builds up inside the kidney. The nerve fibers of
10 mango metro
SEPTEMBER 2016
the kidney and surrounding areas interpret this pressure as pain. These nerves also transmit pain signals as the ureter stretches to accommodate the stone.
Symptoms
The location of the pain shifts with the stone. Patients usually experience waves of sharp, knifelike pain in one or both sides of their back or lower abdomen when the stone or stones are lodged near the kidneys. As the stone migrates down through the ureter into the bladder, pain will be felt in the groin area. Pain is also experienced as the stone passes through the narrow opening of the urethra, oftentimes to the extent that it causes nausea or vomiting. Urinating may be painful and may be accompanied by pink or brown colored urine due to the presence of blood. It may also have a foul odor. Fever and chills are also common symptoms if an infection sets in.
Prevention
One of the easiest ways to significantly reduce the chance of developing kidney stones is by staying adequately hydrated. Dehydration can cause minerals to concentrate in the urine, bind together, and then solidify into small, hard crystals. Drinking plenty of fluids every
day is one of the best ways to prevent this from happening. Additionally, limiting your consumption of food high in oxalate, such as beets, peanuts, and spinach, can help to reduce the production the most common type of kidney stone, calcium oxalate stones. Uric acid stones are another type that can be prevented by limiting the consumption of animal protein, which contains high levels of a chemical called purine. Purine can be found in red meat and shellfish and causes the urine to become acidic, which can promote uric acid stones to form. As with any new diet, be sure to speak with your doctor or dietician before making any drastic changes as they may not always be the healthiest choice for everyone.
Treatments
Luckily, patients who suffer from kidney stones can find relief with modern day medicine. The Urology Center at Bumrungrad International Hospital offers both non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures to get rid of kidney stones. Options include drug therapy, shock wave lithotripsy, endoscopic removal, and surgery. Speak more with your doctor to determine which option is right for you.
TOO YOUNG FOR BACK SURGERY? By Dr. Sompoch Paiboonsirijit , Orthopedic Surgeon, Spine Institute, Bumrungrad Hospital
Maybe you’ve taken up running with the intention of getting back into shape, but the jolting impact from jogging on sidewalks and treadmills has taken a toll on your spine. Or perhaps you’ve lifted a box of your child’s old toys and have felt a twinge in your lower back ever since. You may not think you’re ready for back surgery, especially if you’re still young, but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t pursue less invasive treatments to give you the relief you need. Consider the following alternatives:
Incorporate lifestyle changes
It’s true – seemingly mundane activities can lead to back pain or cause an existing condition to worsen. Luckily, small changes in your lifestyle can significantly reduce the pain. If you spend much of the day in a chair, learn to sit without slouching so that your upper body weight is distributed evenly along you spine. Make an effort to get up from your seat often and walk around because it prevents the hamstrings from becoming tight and placing strain on the lower back. If you regularly lift heavy objects, take a refresher course in the proper way to lift. Never use your back and instead use the power of your legs to get the job done. Those who spend long hours on their feet should give priority to comfort and support
rather than appearance when buying shoes. Avoid wearing high heels since they can cause back pain or aggravate existing back pain. Invest in a supportive mattress that evenly distributes your weight and encourages proper spinal alignment. A mattress that is too firm will lead to sore pressure points, while one that is too soft will cause muscle strain and back stiffness. Incorporating low impact exercise into your health routine helps to strengthen the abdominal and lower back muscles that in turn provide spinal support. Exercise has the added bonus of ridding the body of excess weight that would otherwise have put unnecessary stress and pressure on joints, ligaments, and bones.
Physical therapy
Back pain can be alleviated through physical therapy. Professional therapists may suggest alternating heat and ice to the area for immediate pain management or applying electrical therapy or ultrasound. Stretching and gentle muscle releasing techniques also help. As the pain subsides, the specialist may focus on strengthening the surrounding muscles and encouraging the correct postures whenever sitting and standing for continued relief.
Managing medical conditions
Degenerative diseases are a major culprit of
back pain. Arthritis can lead to stiffness and swelling and osteoporosis causes weakens bones that can lead to spine or vertebral fractures. Properly addressing and treating these issues first can later lead to back pain relief. Back pain can also be caused by a non-spinal related condition. For example, patients who suffer from kidney stones may experience back pain because he kidneys are located in the back of the abdomen. This goes to show how important it is to be evaluated by a doctor and properly diagnosed before beginning treatment.
Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
NSAIDs are medications that can be prescribed by your doctor that can temporarily but immediately relieve back pain, reduce inflammation, or both. Muscle relaxers and topical pain killers have effects that last for several hours. Cortisone shots, which is a numbing medication injected in the space around your spinal cord, can last for several months. Since every patient’s situation is different, it’s best to speak with your doctor in order to determine which treatment is right for you. Your doctor will take into account your pain relief, the level of functional improvement, and any complication of which you are at risk. If your pain continues to be debilitating, you may benefit from surgery.

a
guide to...
Watcharapol You might remember a couple of issues ago, we hit up Plearnary Mall, a brand new community mall located within the Watcharapol area. We’re back here in this area once again, but this time, we’re taking you to explore the other corners of Watcharapol and inviting you to experience a range of activities that locals here enjoy doing. Come and join us!
10:00 A.M. A VISIT AT WATCHARAPOL’S ALL-IN-ONE SHOPPING MALL Dressed casually, I left home and headed to the biggest department store in the area called the Fashion Island. It was established in 1995, only one year after I was born, so I can say that I grew up with this place. I frequent this mall and saw it change year after year. Fashion Island has everything that you need, with the concept that aims to provide happiness for every family. Robinson, Big C, Home Pro, Sport World,
Major Cineplex, B2S, and other top brands are here too. On top of that, there are countless food and beverage choices, ranging from very popular restaurants to homemade style cuisines. No matter how often you visit Fashion Island, you’ll never get bored of the food. No need to worry about parking your car, thanks to Fashion Island’s vast parking area.
12 : 00 P.M. VISIT FASHION ISLAND’S ROMANTIC NEIGHBORHOOD After gaining big success, Fashion Island has extended its business by coming up with another shopping center, The Promenade. It’s located just next to Fashion Island, with a path connecting the two together. What’s unique about this place is its architecture, which makes it look like the Old Town Main Street in Europe. First thing people do once they arrive here for the first time are taking photos! There’re so many beautiful spots both inside and outside The Promenade that you may want to snap great shots with. In the middle of the first floor lies a colorful, dancing fountain. You can sit and rest here once you feel tired and watch the fountain ‘dance’ while the colors are constantly changing.

5:00 P.M.
ENJOY A LATE MARKET STROLL AT THANOMMIT MARKET From Sathira Dhammasathan, just a few minutes walk and you’ll see a big market named Thanommit market. It’s the most popular market in the area and on top of that, it won the Cleanest Market Award in 2012. Early risers often come here in the morning to grab some fresh stuff home but don’t worry, if you come here late in the evening, a lot of stores are still open because
the Thanommit market is actually divided into 4 zones, one for fresh meats, vegetables and fruits, one for beauty and fashion, another for old and rare goods and the other is a 24-hour outdoor food hub. The operating time for each store varies. I personally love the food zone and that’s why I’m taking you there next, as the last stop for today’s Watcharapol’s trip!
1:00 P.M.
TAKE A BREAK WITH SUPERB MEXICAN FOOD I’m guessing by this time you’re hungry already. I’ve been walking around each floor of The Promenade and finally selected to eat at Sunrise Tacos. The staff in this branch are very friendly and one of them recommended that I try the restaurant’s signature Taco Alhambres, which came in three portions, but just the right amount for single hungry person. The dish consists of flour tortillas with chicken, bacon, grilled onions, peppers, and herbs cooked on the grill. What I
personally love about Sunrise Tacos is the variety of sauces they provide. My favorite is the Lalo’s Hot and Sweet, which was a perfect combination to the dish I ordered. But if you love to try something more spicy, try John’s Hot Salsa. You can also create your own Tacos by choosing soft flour, soft corn, or crunchy corn tortillas and select your desired fillings. Ask the Sunrise Tacos’ staff how to order. They’re more than willing to help!
3:00 P.M.
GET RELAXED AT WATCHARAPOL’S DHAMMA CENTRE Now, it’s time to leave the air-conditioned spaces and get closer to nature. Just about 15 minutes from The Promenade, you’ll arrive at the Sathira Dhammasathan whose founder is a recognized Buddhist Nun, Mae Chee Sansanee. The place doesn’t look like a temple, from my opinion. I rather felt like walking in a huge garden, appreciating the peaceful surroundings. When you arrive, pay respect
at the shrine first and then you can walk around the place. There’s a café inside the center as well. Sathira Dhammasathan holds different special Dhamma-related events so you can visit its official website at http:// www.sdsweb.org/ to check out more about how to join. Whenever you feel like needing some spiritual rest, come visit Sathira Dhammasathan at Watcharapol.
7:30 P.M.
END YOUR DAY WITH LOCAL YUMMY DISHES AND STREET FOOD After the sun sets, I bet we’re all going hungry again. The 24-hour outdoor food zone, known in Thai as the Talad Torroong, is wellknown among those who live around the Watcharapol area. It’s not easy to find available seats especially around 8 PM onwards, so you may need to wait around 1015 minutes. There’re so many food and dessert choices you can choose from. My personal favorite has always been
the Spicy Pork Noodle. The taste is ‘zaab’ and distinguishably full-flavored. Another highly recommended menu is the Pork satay, served with a toast. This dish is my family’s favorite so we often order at least 2-3 sets! Let me introduce you to my dad’s favorite, the Pan-fried crispy mussel with bean sprout. It’s very crispy and savory. Adding a sweet-chilli sauce on top is undoubtedly an awesome idea to spice the dish up. Try it for yourself!

and Food (DYB) offers a very homey atmosphere as a fitness center with a healthy food restaurant. With one stop, you’ll both get your body fit and have your appetite filled. With its original concept, ‘An incredible selection of delicious and healthy food designed to help you meet your fitness goals’, DYB has prepared a wide range of reasonably priced dishes and beverages, which are both healthy and delicious, to ensure customers’ satisfaction with every visit… a perfect food match from DYB’s menu! We arrived there on a Saturday noon, but luckily the place wasn’t crowded yet. Recommended by the staff who greeted us warmly, I ordered the salad dish called Cajun Salmon. Three sizes can be chosen from: 209 baht for small, 244 baht for medium and 279 baht for large. I chose a medium-sized order. What’s special about Design Your Body’s Cajun Salmon is that you’ll get to design your own bowl of salad. Three simple steps: First, choose your base for the salad (green and red veggies), chopped salad, or Riceberry. Then you can pick five toppings. My suggestion includes broccoli, roasted pumpkin, toasted bread, boiled whole egg, and corn. Lastly, choose your dressing. Sesame Soy

Sauce is my personal favorite. The fresh veggies and salmon in this mouthwatering salad has made the Cajun Salmon dish amazingly delicious! The salmon bites were of soft texture with a rich flavor, and the serving size was just
right to serve one. The greens were very clean, fresh, and naturally sweet. While eating this salad dish, I was needing a cool and refreshing beverage to go along. I looked through Design Your Body’s menu once again and was interested in the green
protein shake they call the Green Hulk, labeled with no syrup added. The drink is the mixture between whey protein, spinach, peach, banana, milk, and honey. I felt that the taste was a bit weird at first, but as I continued tasting, I couldn’t deny that its flavor was uniquely delicious. The smell of the peach dominated, and the milk helped in bringing the full-bodied texture. Drinking it along with your salad dish is not a bad idea at all. I personally felt that the Green Hulk drink was a perfect match to the Cajun Salmon salad. Plus, the taste of the banana complemented well with the corn bits in the salad bowl. Try it for yourself, and you’ll know that I’m not exaggerating!

Your adventure trip will start with a long-tail boat ride on Tha Chin River. As you navigate the canals branching out of the river, you will have a chance to see the local communities going about their daily business. Houses are literally built above the water on stilts and you’ll see many children jumping in the river from their house porches. The engine of the boat can be a bit noisy, but you will soon become engrossed with the lush vegetation around you and forget all the worries of the hectic life we live in the city.

The location of this memorial park is believed to be the birthplace of King Rama II, the second monarch of the current Chakri Dynasty. A poet himself, Rama II spearheaded a time of cultural renaissance in both literature and Buddhist education, for which he was awarded the status of Person of the World by UNESCO. The
park is a memorial to the king’s legacy. MANGO METRO’S 10-YEAR REUNION... #4 30
Swimming with Sharks By Matt Totsky mtotsky@yahoo.com
T
he metaphor of “swimming with sharks” might be applied to a night out at many of Bangkok’s infamous entertainment venues, but it turns out that you can do the real thing (with a much higher degree of safety) at Siam Ocean World. If this isn’t one of those “only in Bangkok” phenomena, I don’t know what is. I highly doubt that there is a similar program in any public aquarium in the U.S. I prepared myself for a fight when I told my wife I was going to do it. Surprisingly, she encouraged me! “Dive with the Sharks” is sponsored by Planet Scuba and takes place in the world-class aquarium located in the basement of Siam Paragon mall. The program promises to put you face to face with sea creatures like the Grey Nurse Shark (also known as the Sand Tiger Shark or the Spotted Ragged Tooth Shark), the Leopard Shark and many other frightening fish like the Spotted Eagle Ray. What is interesting is that anyone over 12 years old can do it, even if they’ve
never dived before. Planet Scuba offers an introductory course geared toward first-time divers and they provide all of the equipment. For me, this was the perfect situation because I got to sample the diving experience for less than half the cost of what it would be for a full-blown certification course. Plus, it didn’t involve a long trip to the ocean.
about an hour and a half and when it was finished, I felt I had enough information for my first dive.
The training session took place at a local pool with my instructor, Pam, whose 11 years of diving experience was evident in the clear, relaxed way she teaches her students. Personally, I wasn’t too tense about diving for the first time, but for those who are, an instructor with a style like Pam’s would help to calm anyone’s nerves.
When I told people that I was going to do this, most asked if I was crazy or afraid. The honest answer is that I was neither. It seems to me that ever since “Jaws,” sharks have gotten a bit of a bad rap. (And that was 32 years ago… let’s get over it!) Of course I wouldn’t want to swim with a Great White, but the ones that reside in the aquarium didn’t frighten me a bit. I know that despite their fearsome appearance, shark species like the Grey Nurse are relatively placid unless provoked. I was told not to touch the sharks and to keep out of their way, and I was only too happy to follow this simple, yet obvious rule.
The introductory program covered basic concepts like breathing underwater, buoyancy, mask de-fogging, ear and mask equalization, underwater swimming, regulator recovery, hand signal recognition, the use of the air gauge and a few other things. This may seem like a lot to comprehend at once, but I didn’t find it too overwhelming. It lasted
I met Pam at Siam Ocean World two days later. After a brief re-cap of the basics, we put on our equipment and wet suits and got in the tank. It only took me a minute or two to get the hang of it, which is good because before too long I was swimming side by side with sharks that were as big or bigger as me.

SEPTEMBER 2016
It’s hard to believe, but in 3 short months, this magazine will have been around for 10 years. We thought it might be fun if we took the next few issues to “flashback” to the first year. This article came all the way from Issue #11 of Bangkok Trader (the original name of the mag) in October 2007. Amazingly, the folks in the article are still around and doing their thing. Also, amazingly, we still have the computer files all the back to the first issue... and we still can’t figure out how they put this thing together! So we’re just sticking it in like the printers received and printed it a decade ago… in glorious black and white!

My shark dive took place on a Sunday, which also happened to fall on a holiday weekend in Thailand, and for that reason Siam Ocean World was packed that day. The Thai patrons on hand seemed pretty excited to watch my dive, but for me it was cool to see my family and some friends waving at me from the other side of the glass. (Good thing I didn’t get bitten… that would have been embarrassing!) Honestly, the experience was a lot of fun, but it left me yearning to take a full-blown class and dive in the open water. With all of the amazing coral reefs of Thailand, I’m sure I’ll get some great opportunities to do just that sometime soon, but for now this experience was more that enough to satisfy my curiosity. In fact, I think it was a good idea to scuba dive in a tank for my first time because it was a contained environment and that made me feel safer if something were to go wrong (despite the fact that I was surrounded by about 30-40 sharks). Thankfully everything was OK, although I did have some brief buoyancy issues a few times. Overall, I had a great time and was glad I got the chance to have this thrilling adventure. The dive was supposed to last half an hour, but I think we were in the tank for about 45 minutes. I can tell you, the time went quickly and I would do the whole thing all over again if given the chance. For more information about this program, visit www.sharkdive.org.
