Portuguese By Dave Stamboulis. While Bangkok has changed immeasurably over the years, it still is of comfort to those who like the way it used to be to get away from the Skytrain, endless community malls, and constant new development, and discover still remaining bits of the Bangkok of old. One such spot lies just across the Chao Phraya on the Thonburi side, and the Church of Santa Cruz, while not necessarily attracting to much more than a glance from passersby, actually has quite a historical legacy, home to an age old community, and well worth a visit into the Bangkok of yesteryear. During the 1500s, the first farang set foot in Thailand, known as Siam in those times. Portuguese adventurers made their way to the kingdom from Europe, and settled in Ayutthaya, trading arms for textiles, as well as being able to settle and practice Catholicism. Two centuries, later, the Burmese sacked Ayutthaya, and Thailand’s ancient capital was subsequently moved to Thonburi. King Thaksin, supportive of the Portuguese, granted them a plot of land on the Chao Phraya where they could start a new community.

Legacy In 1769, the Church of Santa Cruz was built, with plenty of assistance from the local Chinese community in helping to renovate it, even giving some Chinese architectural touches. In light of this, locals called the church Kudi Jin, “the Chinese church, a name that has stuck with Santa Cruz until this day, and is the name of the surrounding community as well. The church was renovated again in the early 1900s, by the slew of Italian architects who were in residence in Bangkok at the time, designing other European styled masterpieces like the old Phraya Palazzo, now a boutique hotel located further up the river. Today, the neighborhood is home to a Thai-Catholic community, with a multicultural school, community center, and set on a series of tiny narrow lanes that sit above canals and river backwater, featuring old wooden teak homes, some caring art murals, a newly opened museum cafe, and even a longstanding

ing back down the passageway, the Santa Cruz dome towers above the power wires. People here still live in seemingly ramshackle half-falling-down wooden homes, similar to elsewhere along the canals of Bangkok, yet here they have Jesus portraits hanging in the entryways, and Mary doorknockers outside. The Baan Kudi Jin Museum is a new addition to the neighborhood. A smart looking and inviting home with an open courtyard that seeks to showcase some of the history here, as well as capitalize on the recent influx of local tourists that are discovering the traditional part of Bangkok. While its exhibits are rather sparse at the moment, the cafe inside is a lovely spot, and makes for an excellent pit stop while wandering around here.

would be replicated at any church square in Lisbon.

It’s quite a juxtaposition between the open Italian-style piazza church square and the narrow winding alleyways of the adjoining community. With minimal traffic, the square now serves as a place for residents to jog, ride bicycles, and walk around the church, while old timers sit on the park benches and watch the world go by, a scene that

The tiny sois branching off from the square are typical Thonburi, with plenty of dead ends, haphazard power cables strung from above, and little shops set up in residents’ living rooms that open to the street. There’s a bit more color here though, as locals have painted and sketched some creative murals to give the winding passages some flavor, and look-

Not nearly as fancy or inviting, yet far more atmospheric, plunge even further into the tiny alley around the corner and one arrives at Thanusingha, a hole in the wall bakery, where the same family has been baking traditional Portuguese cakes for five generations. The recipe for kanom farang kudi jin has been around for about 400 years, combining wheat flour, egg, raisins, and sugar, without using yeast, to create a sponge-like cross between a muffin and a cookie that is taken with tea or coffee. Only three families in the neighborhood now bake the snacks, and Thanusingha is the only place where one can actually enjoy one while sitting down inside the old and tiny house, where the front section has been converted into a cozy sit down cafe. They also do a mean cup of strong Thai milk tea here, and one can enjoy some tea, cocoa, and watch the cakes coming out of the kitchen and getting packaged into attractive take out souvenir packs at the same time.

It’s quite novel to see an old area of Bangkok still so integrated and strong, and while the church itself is only open to the public on Sunday morning and evening when there are services, the exterior is still quite picturesque, and worth a look at any time. The church fronts the river, and there is even a boat pier right outside, although this is no longer used, as the cross river ferry now stops just five minutes up the way at Wat Kalyanamit. It’s also of interest to note how multicultural this neighborhood was. Wat Kalayanamit is practically right next door, as is the Kuan An Keng Chinese shrine. Additionally, the Ton Son Mosque is just up the road, and also dates back from the 1700s, showing that Buddhists, Muslims, and Christians all lived in harmony in Bangkok several hundred years ago. It’s an easy day trip to make to sample this historical bit of Bangkok. The best way to get here is to take the Chao Phraya River ferry to the Yodpiman Riverwalk pier, and then walk up river through the Yodpiman complex a few minutes to the Pak Khlong Talat pier, where you can catch a cross river ferry to the Kalayanamitr Pier across the way. Santa Cruz church is visible from everywhere on this route, so you’ll have no trouble finding it. From the church, it is a further 10-15 minutes north to Wat Arun, so you can throw that into a tourist outing as well.

Weekend Wanderings

things to do in Samut Sakhon

By Voicu Mihnea Simandan Samut Sakhon is a small central province located 36 kilometers west of Bangkok that, surprisingly, offers quite a few not-so-common things to do and appeals to any kind of traveler. Regardless of whether you’re

travelling alone, with kids, or in a group, Samut Sakhon is a great place to spend a weekend in. On your next trip to Samut Sakhon, make sure not to miss out on these five things: Go on a long-tail boat river ride, feed the river monkeys, plant trees in the mangrove forest, go mud surfing, and explore the salt ponds and flats. Samut Sakhon province is located at the mouth of Tha Chin River and is only two kilometers away from the Gulf of Thailand. The province is a laid back destination and the main economic activities here gravitate around the river and the sea which is harvested for its seafood and salt.

If you’re traveling to Samut Sakhon with the intension of having fun while at the same time connecting with the nature around you, then it’s advisable to organize all your outings through the resort you’re staying at. Most resorts have travel packages that include daily trips and activities in the surrounding area. Baanmai Chailane ( www.baanmaichailane. com) is such a mid-range resort that has great cottages built right on the bank of the river. After you’ve checked in and dropped your luggage, waste no time and head for the reception to arrange a day full of adventure.

1

Go on a long-tail boat river ride Your adventure trip will start with a long-tail boat ride on Tha Chin River. As you navigate the canals branching out of the river, you will have a chance to see the local communities going about their daily business. Houses are literally built above the water on stilts and you’ll see many children jumping in the river from their house porches. The engine of the boat can be a bit noisy, but you will soon become engrossed with the lush vegetation around you and forget all the worries of the hectic life we live in the city.

2

Feed the river monkeys

The boat ride will offer you surprises at every turn and it is quite amazing how the nature around you changes from a narrow canal to a wide river and then back to a narrow water lane. The pilot of the boat seems to absent-mindedly take his vessel through this and that thicket and not once you might wonder if he’ll find his way back. But, rest assured, he’s taking you to your next stop: a place full of monkeys bathing in the river.

Here, the boat will slow down and give you a chance to throw bananas and other small fruits at the monkeys who expertly catch them in the air. Since they are still wild animals, the boat never stops nor does it get too close to the monkeys. You wouldn’t want to wrestle your favourite cap from the hands of a monkey that climbed aboard!

3

Plant trees in the mangrove forest Soon after you leave the monkeys behind, you’ll arrive at a spot in the estuary where the vegetation around you is not that thick. There’s no mooring area and you’ll have to get off the boat and literally sink knee-deep in the mud. Be warned that trudging the few steps to firmer ground won’t be a walk in the park and there are high chances of you losing your balance and ending up on

8 mango metro

AUGUST 2016

your fours, all covered up in mud. The boat co-pilot will help you with the crossing and will also show you how and where to plant mangrove tree seedling. Your effort is not just some sort of show arranged for tourists! The seedling you’re planting will grow into adult trees and become part of the larger mangrove forest lining up the shores of Samut Sakhon.

4 Go mud surfing

5

By now you’re all covered up in mud but you feel great knowing that you’ve actually done something that will have a positive impact on the local ecosystem and environment. It’s time to get really muddy then. Without caring anymore how much mud you have on your body, you negotiate your way back to the boat and enjoy the ride to the mouth of the river where, lo and behold, other travelers just like you are mud surfing! Or, at least, they’re trying to.

The pilots give you from under the boat seats a wooden plank and invite you to get off and try to maintain you balance on the board while it slides in the mud. Although you won’t be on two feet for too many seconds (unless you have the skills of a surfer), the activity is really fun and you’ll discover various ways to compensate for your lack of mud surfing abilities. (Throwing wet mud at your friends is one.)

Check out the salt evaporation ponds and flats You’ll be back at your resort at sundown, and after a dinner consisting of every imaginable seafood dish possible, you’ll likely collapse to sleep. The following day, on your way back to Bangkok, look out for salt evaporation ponds and flats where local farmers rake the salt off the dry flats, shovel it in wheelbarrows, and carry it to a waiting truck. If you want to feed some money straight into the community, consider buying some salt from the makeshift stalls lining up the ponds. From Bangkok, Samut Sakhon can be easily reached by bus from the Southern Bus Terminal or by private car via Phetchakasem Road and then on the outer ring road. You can also take the train from Wongwian Yai Railway Station, but the journey is more complicated as you’ll have to change trains.

Take a Bite Out of the Big Mango! Bangkok welcomes hundreds of visitors and new residents every day, all undoubtedly hoping to get the most out of living in this unique and exciting city. When trying to make living in Bangkok an enjoyable endeavor, it’s important to keep in mind that Bangkok is an international city with residents from all corners of the world, many of whom have developed systems and services to help support many of Bangkok’s expat residents. One of the most common threads in the life of an expat is the uncertainty of living in a new place, where the customs and languages may be drastically different from anything you know back home. The question of where to go for what, and whom to seek out for what service, become very daunting tasks. This is why the annual Living in Bangkok event is held at Bumrungrad International Hospital, now in its 18th year. Our goal is to help Bangkok’s many expats and their families connect with the services that will make it easier to carve out meaningful and fulfilling lives within this new culture. This event attracts many major organizations and groups from the Bangkok community to one location, making it that much easier to find the right support without having to run around town collecting information.

Create healthy routines

It goes without saying that a healthy lifestyle is one of the most important things in life, if not the most important. Our lifestyles dictate what will happen to us in the future, whether we will enjoy aging healthy or face the possibility of aging with conditions that might have been prevented with a healthier lifestyle. The things we do every day, especially the habits we form that directly affect our well-being, are some of the most important decisions we’ll ever make.

10 mango metro

AUGUST 2016

One of the things that people find challenging upon moving to a new place is maintaining the routines they have built for a healthy lifestyle. This catchy phrase of “healthy lifestyle” is of course made up of several steps and a series of choices that we make every day. In addition to eating well and getting plenty of exercise, choices like where to live, how to commute to work, what hours to work, also have an effect on our overall health, especially in the long run. So, knowing that our daily choices have an impact on our health, it’s important to carve out routines that add up to positive gains.

Bangkok living done right

New residents will quickly learn that Bangkok is a city that lends itself very well to an active lifestyle. The city attracts people from all over the world, therefore the most exciting fitness trends and new diets always arrive on the scene. Of course, it’s also possible to start by making small changes such as going for a walk in one of Bangkok’s parks, or going for a bicycle ride around the city’s bike paths or walking trails. If you’re not sure where to even begin, just browse around the many exhibits that are available at this year’s Living in Bangkok event, all of which are a great start to starting off on your healthy journey, or reclaiming your old routines to get back on track.

Bangkok’s many state of the art fitness centers, or challenge yourself by joining a CrossFit or Bootcamp class. There’s plenty more, and this city is teeming with places and opportunities in which to experience it all.

Get out there and have some fun!

Never a boring day

Bangkok is a lot of things, but boring is not one of them. This city has everything going on, sometimes all at once. The smart resident knows that in the midst of the chaos is a finely tuned machine of a city, with a rhyme and reason for nearly everything. And what’s left as a result is a city of variety, with many choices for everything. The neighborhoods of Bangkok are a testament to this variety, with the riverside offering a glimpse into slow life while the crowds of Silom and Sukhumvit vibrate with the city’s frenetic pulse. Take advantage of this variety, and carve out a lifestyle that is balanced between the right amount of work and play. You can build new routines around your schedule, or shift your schedule to better suit your routines. Perhaps some morning yoga to get the day started right, or an evening run to cap off a productive day. Better yet, join a spin class at one of

This concrete jungle sure is congested, and it is often too hot and too loud to seem like an inviting place for some fun in the sun. However, look beyond the congested streets and venture out into the natural respites that are peppered around the city. Public parks are aplenty, and community fitness is a favorite pastime of many people here, including the local community. Nearly every day, people gather at the city parks for free, community-led aerobics classes or team sports like basketball while others walk, run, or ride their bikes around the park and surrounding area. We are social creatures, and that’s why social connection platforms like Facebook and Meetup are so popular, especially among expats who are trying to find their new friends or build new social circles in their new city. These platforms are of course a great way to find others in your new city who may be interested in perhaps taking the same cooking classes, or going for a workout together. The city’s many fitness centers and recreational clubs are represented at this year’s Living in Bangkok event, ready to answer your questions eager to help provide you with some inspiration.

Explore the possibilities

Living healthy in Bangkok is not a lofty goal, even if you’re not accustomed to the high temperature or may have trouble feeling confident among strangers. Take this opportunity to explore the many available alternatives to the traditional gym setting, or join a group that

cially so when living in Thailand. Bangkok is home to many culinary pioneers, and some of the best and healthiest food is within easy reach. For even more of a social activity, take a healthy cooking class and make some friends while learning a valuable new skill to add to your healthy lifestyle. All of this and more are readily available at this year’s Living in Bangkok event, and it’s a great way to start getting active and build a social life centered on activities that could add quality years to your life.

a

guide to...

Yaowarat Getting tired of seeing the towering Bangkok skyscrapers and the jampacked Sky Train on the weekends, I’ve been scrolling down through countless websites the whole week, searching for a new destination to spend my free time on the weekend. Then as suggested by my half Thai half Chinese dad, we finally came up with an idea to visit an interesting spot where I could get myself tuned with both the traditional and modern Chinese culture. In this month’s foodpanda guide, we are taking you to Yaowarat, Bangkok’s biggest Chinatown!

10:00 A.M. CHINESE TEMPLE VISIT There’s no need for you to be extra early when visiting Yaowarat! 10 A.M. is the just the right time for our first stop, the Wat Mangkon Kamalawat. The temple is one of the most important and famous Chinese temples in Bangkok, where people worship religious figures and pay their respects. When you arrive at the entrance, you can buy a THB 100 set of goods used for

worshipping, prepared by the temple. Don’t worry if you don’t know what to do first when you step inside the viharn, the staff are very helpful. During several annual events, Wat Leng Noei Yi will be packed with both Chinese and Thais. The whole temple has a traditional Chinese architecture style and is very beautiful and elegant, so feel free to snap photos!

The best way to visit Yaowarat is by taking a taxi. I suggest that you come after 10 a.m. but no later than noon, so all the stores will be open but still not too crowded yet. While there’re already a lot of reviews on what to eat and where to go here in this Chinatown, we’re taking you to new spots. Here’s my own version of the ultimate guide to Yaowarat!

11.00 A.M. STREET SHOPPING Just around 20 steps from the temple, you’ll see that the shopping street lies close by. Everything you need is here, even some hard-tofind goods can be found here at Yaowarat. You’ll see some fresh fruits sold on one side, and Thai snacks on the other. There’s plenty of things you can buy. I won’t take you to any restaurants yet for brunch because choosing to try street food first is always a better choice!

12 mango metro

AUGUST 2016

1:00 P.M SHOPPING FOR COOKING INGREDIENTS If you want to cook some authentic Thai food but you’re having a hard time to find ingredients, Yaowarat is a good place to find what you need. I’m now taking you to one of the best fresh ingredients stores in Bangkok, known as Tra-Mue-Tee-Nueung. The store is located in Soi Talad

Kao (Yaowarat’s Old Market). Just walk straight for about 40 meters and you’ll see a big store on your left, with its colorful, shimmering sign in front. Tra-Mue-Tee-Nueung is best known for its quality fresh peppers, but other ingredients are also available at a cheap price!

5:00 P.M. SEARCHING FOR THE BEST CHESTNUTS TO TAKE HOME

3:00 P.M TIME FOR SOMETHING SWEET! After doing all those grocery shopping, I know you all must be hungry by now. Not very far from the TraMue-Tee-Nueung store is where a tiny Thai sweets shop is located. Here I tried a snack known as Leb-Mue-Nang. It’s one of the most find-to-hard Thai traditional snacks. Only a small number of local shops in Bangkok still produce this, so it’s a must to try this snack here at least once! Besides being colorful, Leb-Mue-Nang tasted very good. The smell and taste of sesame was domi

nant, and the coconut milk has made the whole piece so moist yet a bit chewy at the same time. Eaten along with the bits of young coconut was the best combination. It was my first time trying this snack and I would recommend you to try this too!

It will soon be time to go back, but if you want to continue exploring the place, it’s also a great idea because Yaomarat’s night market is opening. If you choose to go back at this time, then follow me as we grab some delicious chestnuts

back home! You’ll see a ton of chestnut shops here, both small and large along both sides of the streets. The price varies slightly so what matters the most is the quality. Try several of them first before buying!

Top of the Town The best sushi in Bangkok Sushi is such an exquisite culinary art. It’s the most popular Japanese food, found in every corner of Japan and almost anywhere in the world. Among a ton of great sushi restaurants in town, which ones serve the best sushi in Bangkok?

Sonie

Recommended by my close friend who is a sushi-lover herself, Sonie was the first restaurant that I tried. Sonie serves Japanese fusion dishes and is best known for their wide range of delicious rolls. I was impressed by Sonie’s interior decoration. It was a mixture between traditional

and contemporary Japanese style, giving such a unique restaurant atmosphere. I ordered two pieces of Sonie’s Hotate Sushi to begin with. The size of the scallops were big and chunky. The taste was so fresh but I found it a little bit bland, but nothing a salty dip won’t fix. The soy sauce can be overpowering so I would recommend to dip just a small part of your sushi so you can still taste how fresh the scallop is!

Kaizen

My second stop was at Kaizen Sushi & Hibachi, a well-loved sushi restaurant. Kaizen sticks with the concept of the true traditional Japanese, so its interior design is based on simplicity. I arrived there before lunchtime so the place was not crowded yet. This time, I decided to go with O-Toro, the king of Sushi. I had a pretty high expectation for the dish because the price was a little bit expensive; this is because this fish is a pretty rare catch. The size was like a normal sushi, but the taste was extraordinary! The O-Toro was so tender that it almost melted in my mouth, and the

rice tasted well balanced too. One of the things I noticed about this dish was that the tuna used was undeniably of premium quality. Kaizen’s O-Toro Sushi was a heavenly treat. Definitely one of the best sushi in Bangkok!

Nippon Kai Market

Still in the midst of the best sushi in Bangkok hunt, I continued to the next destination at Nippon Kai Market, in Sukhumvit 53. The restaurant is divided into two zones. The first floor is the market, selling

fresh food for cooking ingredients while the upper level provides the dining area. After trying several sushis, I felt like having something spicy so I ordered the Nippon Kai Market’s Mentaiko Sushi Nigiri. It was wrapped with the Japanese roasted seaweed, and topped with a spicy cod roe. I was really addicted to the taste of the spicy cod roe because it had a very unique texture and I personally loved its moderate spiciness. However, I think that the price of this Nippon Kai Market dish was a little high in relation its serving size.

My last stop for the best sushi in Bangkok hunt was at Ryoshi, a recognized Sushi restaurant at Gateway Ekkamai, directly connected to the BTS Ekkamai station. I arrived in the late afternoon and Ryoshi was still crowded. I managed to get the seat in ten minutes and placed my order straightaway. I picked the Engawa Saikyo Nigiri Sushi this time since I’ve never tried it at any sushi restaurant before. I was impressed by the served portion because it was bigger than I expected. The whole piece was full-flavored. For me, the Saikyo sauce on top was the perfect complement. The Engawa fish itself was so tender and fresh. At 112 baht, I personally think that this sushi is worth it.

COMMON BEHAVIORAL DISORDERS IN YOUNG CHILDREN By Dr. Chakriya Theeranate, Pediatrician, Children’s (Pediatrics) Center, Bumrungrad Hospital

It’s natural for young children to be rowdy and attentive at times, but this behavior can get out of control for some kids. When these behaviors get out of control and start affecting the lives of children, their parents, their teachers, and even other children, it’s time to consider what could be the root cause of the issue and look for solutions. In this article, we explore the general signs of several common behavioral disorders in young children.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

Children suffering from ADHD have hyperactive, inattentive, and impulsive characteristics. Hyperactivity is seen in the child’s inability to sit still, which can affect their success in the classroom or other settings where sitting still for a period of time may be required. A child with hyperactivity may walk or run around a lot, fidget constantly, talk excessively, and may be unable to participate in quiet tasks. Children who are inattentive may lack focus and become easily distracted by small sounds or have trouble staying on topic. They may be disorganized, have trouble with paying atten-

16 mango metro

AUGUST 2016

tion, and can often make mistakes. They may forget to complete routine tasks or engage in acceptable social behaviors. Impulsive children may have a hard time with patience, which can cause problems in situations such as waiting in line or listening in a classroom. Children with ADHD who receive no treatment may have issues with low self-esteem.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism spectrum disorder is a biological, neurodevelopmental disorder with a wide variety of symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Children with ASD may seem emotionally distant from their family members and peers. Early signs of this disorder can be poor verbal and non-verbal communication skills, lack of flexibility in daily routines or thinking, and the inability to relate to other people or engage in social interactions. For example, a young child with ASD may lack facial expressions and have difficulty retaining eye contact. They may have unusual communication habits such as being unable to finish a sentence, excessively repeating words or phrases, or using new words or phrases without understanding what they mean. They may also be resistant to change and insist on routine.

SAD (Separation Anxiety Disorder)

Common symptoms of SAD include being scared or excessively anxious when separated from a parent, guardian, babysitter, or other family members. This extreme anxiety continues long after the caregiver has left. The child is usually worried that something bad will happen to him or her or that something bad will happen to the caregiver. It is not uncommon for children to be clingy towards a caregiver while being dropped off at a location such as school or day care, or briefly upset when left alone. However, children who have SAD will not adjust to a new situation and will continue exhibiting anxiety and fear long after the period of time it usually takes for children to be distracted by something else. They may throw tantrums, have lengthy crying spells, or excessively plead for their caregiver. They may even complain of physical pains such as headaches or stomachaches. Some will become upset even before the caregiver leaves, and react by refusing to go to school or daycare, or be unwilling to go to sleep or take a nap without the caregiver present.

Ages to look for behavioral disorders

These behavioral disorders occur before the age of ten years old. ADHD may be diagnosed in children as young as four years old, while signs of autism may begin in children who are less than two years old. Although it is very common for toddlers to go through a short phase of separation anxiety, symptoms of SAD may appear around the age of five or six. No matter the behavioral disorder, the sooner the condition is diagnosed, the sooner childcare professionals and parents can offer specialized treatments and a healthy environment best suited for the developing child.

Support after diagnosis of a behavioral disorder

If you suspect your child has a behavioral disorder, schedule an appointment with a specialist to properly diagnose your child’s condition. Once you know what could be happening, reach out and connect with programs that offer parenting assistance, emotional support, and networking with childcare professionals, as they can be extremely helpful. By joining a community of other parents who are working through similar issues, you can access knowledge and resources that can help you adjust to your new parenting challenges.

Treatment options

Learning that your child has a behavioral disorder can be an overwhelming and frustrating experience, both for you and your child. So, it’s important to be aware of your options and resources to help make this transition smoother, and provide your child with a treatment option that works best for their overall well-being. Luckily, there are several options to help mini

mize the damage from, and manage your child’s condition. These options can include education, psychotherapy, and medication.

Education and support programs

One way to help manage a child’s behavioral disorder is through educating the entire family about what can be expected and the special ways to handle situations. There are support groups and programs which connect parents and childcare professionals with one another. This provides an excellent opportunity for parents to share knowledge, resources, situation handling, and emotional support in a safe and caring environment. It also connects parents and children with childcare professionals.

Psychotherapy

Depending on the child’s age, seeing a mental health professional who specializes in child psychology is also a viable treatment option. This type of treatment allows the child to better understand his or her condition, as well as learn about healthy ways for dealing with his or her unhealthy thoughts or behaviors. The Child Development Center at Bumrungrad International Hospital provides support and learning development through its behavior specialists, child psychologists, occupational therapists, and pediatric physical therapists. There are many kinds of therapy that can suit the needs of children with behavioral disorders. One of the more widely used methods is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). It combines cognitive therapy, which focuses on a

person’s thoughts and beliefs, with behavioral therapy, which focuses on a person’s actions. The goal of CBT is to change unhealthy thoughts and actions into something positive. This therapy is effective because it teaches the child to first identify their negative thoughts and then evaluate their thoughts from a rational point of view. Finally, they are taught to replace their negative thoughts and subsequent unhealthy behavior with more positive thoughts and actions.

Medication

Depending on the illness and its severity, medication can be an option. This can be done independently or in conjunction with educational programs and/or psychotherapy. Treating a young child’s behavioral disorder with medication should be considered only after exhausting all other non-medical treatment options. Your doctor will re-evaluate your child’s mental and behavioral health to understand their needs before prescribing the right medication. Keep in mind that medication works differently in a developing child than it does in an adult. Although this can be a challenging and frustrating time for parents, there are a lot of options for treatment and plenty of support groups and networks of parents who have experience with similar issues. Therefore, it is possible to get through this difficult time successfully, and eventually arrive at a place where both parents and children enjoy better times without the weight of behavioral disorders getting in the way of a happy childhood.

Wing Chun Tonight By Voicu Mihnea Simandan

In the past few years, there have been quite a few successful movies about Ip Man, a Chinese martial artists famous for his mastery of Wing Chun, a martial art that specializes in close-range combat. While the fictional Ip Man in the latest Hong Kong biographical film (2015) meets Mike Tyson in a fight, the historical Ip Man was actually Bruce Lee’s teacher.

Since the release of the first Ip Man movie in 2010, the desire to learn Wing Chun has spread throughout the world, and many schools have reported a surge in new students wanting to learn this infamous fighting style. The same holds true for Bangkok, where Kieren Krygier, a black belt Wing Chun instructor from Nottinghamshire, England, has been teaching this martial art for the last two years. The 33-year-old sifu – the Chinese title Kieren’s students address him with – was introduced to Wing Chun at the age of 20, when he noticed a small poster advertising Wing Chun lessons at the local library in his town. “When I walked into the class, I instantly noticed that all of the students were smaller than me in regards to muscle size, most appeared to be skinny and weak, including the instructor, who appeared out of shape and not able to protect himself if a fight was to occur. The instructor used me to be his demonstration partner and asked me to attack him anyway I felt comfortable. Being young and wanting to feed my own ego, I threw a fast hard punch to his head. The teacher simply controlled and redirected my attack while taking my balance and

throwing me onto the floor,” recalls Kieren Krygier. “I will never forget that introduction to Wing Chun! 13 years later, I’m still studying and practicing every day.” Sifu Kieren has studied many different systems of Wing Chun, including a direct lineage to Grandmaster Ip Man, studying privately with both Ip Chun and Ip Ching (Grandmaster Ip Man’s sons) in Hong Kong. The system he now practices is an internal system of Wing Chun, which is what separates itself from most other Wing Chun lineages. Kieren chose to stop teaching Wing Chun in England and rather move to Thailand where apparently there is quite a big interest in Wing Chun. “People are interested in learning something new and how to defend themselves and Wing Chun gives them just that. The biggest obstacle for people here is time. They struggle to find the time to train and the Bangkok traffic can make this even more difficult making it to class,” explains Kieren. Although sifu has practiced other fighting and self-defense methods too, such as boxing, wrestling, Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, he fa-

vours Wing Chung for it’s down-to-earth approach. He even competed at a professional level in Muay Thai here in Thailand! “In my Wing Chun classes, you will learn how to use techniques so you can apply them not only in combat but also in everyday life. It’s a very effective form of self-defense which can be used by both males or females of any size or strength,” says Kieren.

“Wing Chun is for everyone, it doesn’t matter if you are a complete novice in martial arts and have never taken a class before, or you studied other arts and have previous experience in combat,” reassures Kieren. “You will be surprised how much you can learn and improve your self-defense skills and most importantly improve your health and day to day life.”

“When a student studies Wing Chun with me,” explains Kieren, “they will learn meditation, Qi Gong, internal body power, life skills, how to correctly punch, kick, throw and lock their opponent, Chin na, ground fighting, weapon disarms, combat awareness, Chi Sau, and much more. My system of Wing Chun teaches a lot more than just stepping and center line punches.”

Apart from all this, Wing Chun is also a great form of meditation, balancing both your mind and body. Sifu Kieren promises to teach his students how to correctly meditate and heal their bodies using Qi Gong, the correct way to breathe, and how to calm their minds.

The biggest misconception about Wing Chun is that it’s just a form of fighting, and its main weapon is the infamous straight line center punch as seen in the Ip Man movies. Unfortunately, this is a picture painted by mainly Wing Chun schools and instructors who have not studied the full system of Wing Chun.

What separates Wing Chun from other hard styles of martial arts is the fact that it allows you to become more powerful and efficient even into a very old age. “When I was training with Ip man’s sons they were both over the age of 70 and easily out skilled and over powered me,” admits Kieren. “True internal power that is developed in Wing Chun does not diminish with age, the more you train the stronger it grows. This is the opposite of an external martial art; for example, if you lift weights to increase your punching power, then you stop and don’t lift weights again for another five years, do you think your punching power would still be the same?” Wing Chun classes in Bangkok take place at Sukhumvit 77 on Onnut Road, very close to BTS Onnut station. To discuss your desired training schedule, contact Sifu Kieren at eliteselfprotection@gmail.com. Muay Thai to “Contend”on a World Stage What does the upcoming “The Contender Muay Thai” mean to Thai boxing and the Thais? By: Nopadon Wongpakdee nopstar@mymuaythai.com

trying to catch my breath and hold down the vomit I feel creeping up my esophagus. One round down, only four more to go… this is Muay Thai.

www.mymuaythai.com Nopadon Wongpakdee, the writer of this article and an exclusive interview with “The Contender” star Alfonso Gomez on page 26, describes his website as “the rants and ramblings of a Muay Thai fan”. Deeply personal and passionate, it offers encyclopedic coverage of the state of Muay Thai in the world today. Tradition, techniques, profiles of fighters and even videos of classic Muay Thai matches -- www.mymuaythai.com has it all and is a mustview website for anyone interested in this fascinating sport.

Muay Thai is called the Science of Eight Limbs because it has eight points of contact. Unlike Western boxing, which only allows the use of your fists, Muay Thai makes full use of hands, elbows, knees and shins.

It’s eight o’clock Saturday morning and I’ve just made the trip from Sutthisan to Sukhumvit 63 in about a half hour. Score one for the BTS

The Contenders are coming “The Contender”, a sports reality show, is the brainchild of reality television pioneer Mark Burnett. Originally aired on American TV in 2005, it took 16 fighters, divided them into two competing teams, and

Many of you reading this have probably caught a glimpse of Muay Thai on Channel 5 or on UBC. You may have even dropped by Lumpini to take in a fight or two. In the next couple of months you’re going to see another side of Muay Thai. At least that’s what the producers of “The Contender Muay Thai” are hoping for.

and MRT. I walk into the Ingram Gym, quickly change into my Muay Thai shorts and wrap my hands. The head trainer, “Bu”, points to the jump ropes hanging off of the rack. I see some stragglers scurrying in as I’m getting warmed up. After a few rounds of skipping rope, Bu motions to me to put on some boxing gloves.

Despite the early hour, the air is already muggy. I’m pouring with sweat and I haven’t even begun to kick the pads yet. “Ow… Sip Tee!” he barks. He wants 10 fast kicks at the beginning of the round to get the blood flowing. He calls out combinations of kicks, knees and punches for me to throw. I try to keep up, but my lungs are beginning to burn; it’s hard work even keeping your hands up to protect your face. Twelve ounces of leather doesn’t sound like much, but trust me, when your lungs are on fire it feels like a ton. The timer sounds, 30 seconds left in the round. “Ow! … lew! lew!” He holds the pads off to the side. He wants me to kick as fast and as hard as I can for the next 30 seconds, which of course feels like two minutes. Ding, ding! Thank God! I walk in circles

made them live together under one roof. In each episode the fighters participated in team-based competitions, ranging from dragging a truck through a river bed to puzzle solving. The winning team won the privilege to pick whom their teammate would go up against. The remainder of the show was dedicated to airing an edited-down version of their five-round bouts. The fighters, all highly skilled boxers, ranged from undefeated fighters on the rise to those looking for their one last shot.

The strength of “The Contender” was the producer’s ability to build a story around each of these fighters. When you put 16 fighters under one roof there are bound to be issues and personality conflicts. Each week they would focus our attention on the growing animosity between fighters. In the end you’re sucked into tuning in to see if a certain fighter got the beating that was coming to him. “The Contender Muay Thai” will attempt to replicate the original format with Muay Thai fighters. Muay What? Two years ago, if you stopped the average American male on the street and asked him what Muay Thai was, you would have gotten a blank stare. A lot has changed in a very short time. One of the fastest growing sports in the US, Europe, and South America is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), No Hold Barred (NHB) fighting. MMA fighters use a wide range of techniques such as striking, kicking and grappling. Muay Thai and Brazilian Ju-jitsu have become their de facto martial arts. Today, Muay Thai is in serious demand. It seems like everybody and their mother is a “Certified Muay Thai Instructor”. All of a sudden, Karate Dojo and Kung Fu schools have added “Kick Boxing” to their curriculum. I live in San Francisco, where we have a population of approximately 750,000. I know of five Muay Thai gyms within the city, and I’m not even counting all the other places that offer “Kick Boxing”. At any given time there are about 1,100 Muay Thai Students shadow boxing around San Francisco. Only small number of these people will ever see the inside of a ring. Most train because it’s an incredible full body workout. And this phenomenon is hardly isolated to the Bay Area. It’s happening all over the world. So what’s the state of Muay Thai in Thailand?

It’s hard to believe, but in 4 short months, this magazine will have been around for 10 years. We thought it might be fun if we took the next few issues to “flashback” to the first year. This article came all the way from Issue #4 of Bangkok Trader (the original name of the mag) in April 2007. Amazingly, the folks in the article are still around and doing their thing. Also, amazingly, we still have the computer files all the back to the first issue... and we still can’t figure out how they put this thing together! So we’re just sticking it in like the printers received and printed it a decade ago… in glorious black and white!

Page 13

Looking outside I’ve been training Muay Thai for approximately nine years. I don’t fight professionally or even consider myself good, for that matter. I train for the same reason most other people train: because I love it. I get back to Bangkok several times a year to visit my parents, and when I do, I always drop into Ingram Gym for a workout. I’ve kept my eye on the Muay Thai scene in Bangkok for nearly a decade. I’ve always wondered to myself, when will Muay Thai finally go mainstream in Thailand? I know this sounds like a ridiculous statement. Thailand is the home of Muay Thai -- how could it get anymore mainstream? Well, we Thais have a habit of looking outside of our own culture, and our love for all things foreign is apparent even in Martial Arts. If you drop into a Tae Kwon Do Academy in Bangkok, you’ll see business is booming. No disrespect intended towards other martial arts disciplines, but I’m amazed why more Thais don’t take advantage of this legendary method of combat that is a living part of our heritage Ask the average American or Englishman who Oscar De La Hoya or Lennox Lewis is and I’d be willing to wager that 95% would know. In contrast, ask your Thai co-worker who Anuwat, Samkor, Yodsaenklai, or Buakaw is. I’m fairly certain that they won’t have a clue. Tipping point

Humility One of the concerns I have with the upcoming show is its ability to create the same controversies and dramas around the Thai fighters. As many of you know, Thai people tend to shy away from confrontation. Thai fighters are often reserved and will rarely talk smack to other fighters. In fact, they are highly respectful to each other. In contrast, the fighters of the original “Contender” were often so polarizing that it was almost impossible not to take a side. As there will be foreign fighters in the Thai line up, it will be interesting to see if nationalism plays a part in any conflicts. Bringing Muay Thai Home Will “The Contender Muay Thai” give the

sport that last push? As of writing this article I only know of two confirmed fighters, the rest are just rumors. The names that are being tossed around as potential contenders are pretty astounding. They are some of the biggest names in Muay Thai. Hopefully with the success of “The Contender” these champions will be as well known at home as Somluck. By bringing these fighters into the homes of Thai people, I’m hoping “The Contender Muay Thai” will impassion us to be proud of something that is ours. Then these fighters, who are regarded worldwide as Thai heroes, can finally receive some longoverdue recognition in their own country. For those of you interested in seeing the contenders’ profiles they can be view on my blog www.mymuaythai.com/contender.

In the United States, it started with the whole cardio kickboxing craze. I was sure it would only be a matter of time until some entrepreneurial Muay Thai gym owner in Thailand created a program targeting the crowd that hangs out at California Wow. I joked with my friends that all it would take is one Thai “Daraa” (TV star) to start training, and the entire country would jump on the bandwagon. I was certain that the international success of the Tony Jaa movies would at least raise the awareness of Muay Thai in Thailand. Yet the only change that I’ve noticed is the amount of farangs who are venturing there to live and train at camps for weeks at a time. These are very motivated people – I’d say that a majority of those who work out and train in Thailand, both Thai and Farang, are experts. My question is: when will the general Thai public, in large numbers, begin to undertake Muay Thai?
