While most visitors and locals have made their way up to Chatuchak on the weekend, most likely more than once, not so many have noticed the rather nondescript Or Kor Tor (Marketing Organisation for Farmers) Produce Market that sits just across the street from Chatuchak’s southern entrance, right by the Kamphaeng Phet MRT station. If you’ve never been here, and especially if you appreciate good produce and top quality food, it’s a highly recommended journey. Or Kor Tor isn’t exactly a hidden secret. CNN Go ranked it as the fourth best fresh market in the world, coming in behind

only the famed Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, Barcelona’s Boqueria, and the Union Square Farmer’s Market in New York City, which is pretty esteemed company. While Chatuchak is only open on weekends, Or Kor Tor is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it is easy to spend half a day here wandering around, shopping, and most definitely eating. The market began as an agricultural collective, operating as a distribution channel for Thai farmers to sell their products, and has since evolved into the top outdoor produce shopping market for all of Bangkok’s major restaurants, and it’s the

one outdoor market where you will see bouffant hairdo’s and business tycoons personally inspecting the melons, browsing the aisles, and comparing the top sea-sonal buys, from mangoes to durian, plus much more. The market sells not only Royal Project organic veggies and fruit from Doi Kham, but also stocks the best imported fruit to be found in town, along with all of the top Thai selections. The prices are higher than elsewhere, but a stroll down the aisles will make you realize why. Mangoes of the most perfect color, shape, and taste, rows of the creme de la creme of durians,

and bunches of perfectly round and massively large lychees, bursting with flavour all compete for shoppers’ attention. If you aren’t buying, it’s still the perfect eye candy, and photographers wanting to do some market photography will be in the best spot in the kingdom. Unlike most other markets which are overcrowded, hot, wet, and fairly unpleasant to navigate, Or Kor Tor is well laid out, with plenty of ventilation and space to move around. The aisles are wide, there are no motorcycles driving through the market, and no massive crowds surging behind you. While produce and quality fruit are the main attractions, there’s also a meat and seafood area, again selling only the best cuts, ranging from imported Norwegian salmon to Mekong giant catfish, and also a large dried goods section, with dried shrimp and fish, chilies, garlic, and all the staples of Thai cuisine. There are also rows with food stalls and regional food hawkers, where one can buy sai oua northern Thai sausages, as

lunch hour midweek, you can also go just outside the back of the market, where there are several sit down places to grab a bite. At Cafe Boran Hat Yai, there are traditional Thai Chinese southern dishes at dirt cheap prices, just like a real Hat Yai cafe, with dim sum, authentic cafe Boran (Thai “ancient” coffee with plenty of condensed milk), and the best version of Malaysian “swimming Rama” pork satay in peanut, chili, and coconut gravy that you will find anywhere in Thailand.

tasty as you’ll find them in Chiang Mai, spicy nam ya curry from the south, or stalls selling grilled pork, chicken, and satay. Best of all is the area of food courts, where there’s a section of tables set up for diners, and vendors sell just about every Thai curry and dish to be had with rice under the sun. You’ll pay at least double what you’d pay on the sidewalk elsewhere in Bangkok (around 70-80 baht for 2 toppings with rice), but the quality again is probably at least twice that

of most places, and the various curries, ranging from Massaman to gaeng kiaow waan green curry are just outstanding. There’s an excellent dessert section near the food court which shouldn’t be missed, selling all sorts of traditional Thai sweets. In particular, the khanom krok coconut milk and rice flour treats are incredibly fresh, gooey, and ever so tasty. If the food tables get too packed, which they tend to if you come here during

Many of the vendors at Or Kor Tor have been selling here for several decades, even after large rent increases that were put in place after the market underwent a major renovation some years ago. This keeps the market having a friendly and local vibe, and one with a fair bit of history. Combined with the fact that you can nip over to Chatuchak to drink, shop, and people-watch, Or Kor Tor is an excellent weekend outing. A word of warning though, if you are a durian addict, this is the best place in Bangkok to buy top notch durian, and the adjacent MRT station does have very large signs telling you that durians are not allowed in the MRT, and yes, the guards have had plenty of practice sniffing them out, so you’ll be forced to either take a cab or walk around to the BTS if you don’t have your own transport for your stinky spiked fruit.

As a general rule of thumb, traveling in Thailand involves visiting temples, museums and palaces; going shopping in street markets and malls; having drinks late at night at street restaurants or in fancy nightclubs; chilling out on the beach on the islands in the south; or hiking in the jungles in the north. But,

Of course, there as well, you will find plenty of temples to visit and seasonal festivals to attend, but Samut Sakhon offers much more. Here, on a weekend escape, you can enjoy a boat ride and spy on monkeys playing on the riverbank, or you can get down and dirty in a mangrove forest (and even plant a tree there) and, for those looking for more thrills, even go mud surfing. To organize all these things in advance, you’ll have to be able to speak quite a lot of fairly fluent Thai, but to make things much easier for everyone, Baanmai Chailane Resort (www.baanmaichailane.com) is an viable option in case you want to have an enjoyable and hassle free trip. Here’s a feasible and exciting itinerary for a two-day one-night trip to Samut Sakhon with the resort’s “four activities package”. Start with a boat ride along the Tha Chin Klong River and explore the local community who still live in traditional wooden houses

raised on stilts. You’ll notice that, instead of a pickup truck in front of their houses, most villagers have a long tail boat parked on the river, bobbing up and down as you speed by in your own boat. The boat ride on the river can go on and on, and then it becomes past noon, and you’re getting hungry. Don’t panic! Your first stop will be at a restaurant located at the mouth of the river, where it flows into the Gulf of Thailand. The restaurant is basically just a wooden structure built on stilts with three huge dining areas. There you’ll sit on the floor in the traditional Thai style and have a copious meal made up of dishes which are all specific to this area of Thailand. Expect to eat lots of fish, seafood and fish curries. Plus, of course, the customary white rice. Back on the boat, you’re set to visit the mangrove forest that blankets the coast and provides much needed protection from sea erosion and even from natural disasters. For example, during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, mangrove forests were able to slow down the rushing colossal waves. As you enter the estuary, you’ll be greeted by packs of local monkeys that play in the shallow waters of the river. Although they seem rather friendly and are not afraid of humans, be on the look out! On several occasions they have sneaked off with boat passengers’ possessions…

Your boat driver will scare them away if they get too close, but if you have some fruit with you, you can throw it to the monkeys and see how skillful they are to open it and eat it. Once you’ve reached deeper into the mangrove forest, it’s time to disembark. The moment you put your foot down on the muddy shore of the mangrove forest, you’ll immediately sink in kneedeep. It’ll be like this for another five to ten meters until you reach more solid ground, but don’t get frustrated when you fall face down in the mud. Your boat driver will then take you farther into the mangrove forest to show you how to plant young mangrove trees which he has brought along from the resort. Getting back onto the boat can be an even bigger challenge but once back on board and covered in mud from ear to toe, you’re off to the surfing ground. Your boat driver will pull out from under

your seat a surfboard which can hold up to three small people and, with some skill, you can even slide for a few meters on the mud. On the next day, on your return trip back to Bangkok, you can also stop along the way at the Shellfish Farm, the floating market on Damnoen Saduak Canal, and the Wichian Chodok Fortress. Just follow the road signs or Google Maps. Going to Samut Sakhon is really easy. If you have a car, then cross the Chao Phraya River into Thonburi and then follow the road signs. You can also take the bus from the Southern Bus Terminal or the train from Wongwian Yai Station (disembark at Maha Chai Station). Once in Samut Sakhon, you can move around by using either tuk tuk, motorbike taxi or even using the ancient samlor (rickshaw), but make sure you ask what the fee will be in advance! Make that trip and enjoy true nature! It is a very worthwhile escape from the city life.

MANGO NIGHTS JENNY’s more than maybe

“The world said it never mattered; you swore it doesn’t matter. I must be crazy. To think that I ever mattered; I guess I never mattered.” So goes the chorus of Jennifer Lackgren’s debut single “Sounds Like Maybe” from a new 5-track EP. On paper, the lyrics express selfdoubt and dismay. But, in the tradition of great songs, the sentiments are heavily disguised by what is simply the most jaunty and catchy piece of guitar-driven pop music you are likely to hear all year. When asked to explain how such a jangly piece of ear candy could, in reality, be an ode to despair, Lackgren explains all five new songs share the same characteristic. “Well, the songs are quite airy and upbeat, but none of them are about a happy topic. I think it kind of evens out with the upbeat tempo and the mellow singing though, sort of ironic really,” she explains. Pressed on what the lyrics are about, she demurs. “I’ll have to leave that up to the listeners and their own interpretation”, she laughs. Part of the contrast comes from her decision to write and record the songs with Bangkok music producer Paul Romaine and Kamp

Krusty auteur Will Corbin. “Paul’s sound is quite poppy and retro, which you can hear in Will’s album Au Contraire that he previously worked on with Paul. That’s what actually got me interested in working with Paul and Will in the first place, because I had really liked the album that they both had worked on together before,” she says. Lackgren first came to prominence in late 2013 when she appeared on the television singing competition show The Voice Thailand and won over the judges with a quirky rendition of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know”. Her version not only gained acclaim from the panel in the studio but also amongst the viewing audience – a YouTube cut of her performance has been viewed a cool 2 million times. Until then, she had been plying her trade around some of Bangkok’s hip inner city bars, largely playing a selection of leftfield covers and the occasional original from band mates. Lackgren says that appearing on The Voice didn’t change her style so much and that the main effect was that she gained much more respect on Bangkok’s live music circuit. After her Voice appearance, Romaine and Corbin approached Lackgren with the idea of help-

ing her develop and record original material in her own right. The songs came together quite quickly, says Lackgren, often in just a couple of sessions on the rooftop of Romaine’s studio. Lackgren says one feature of the EP is her extensive use of harmonies, a trait she picked up in her younger years when she performed in a live act with her sister. For this record, though, the harmonies were all hers. Duplicating them live on her own might be another matter and for now, Lackgren says her plan is to press on treading the boards of Bangkok’s live venues in support of the record with her backing band, The Scallywags. “I think playing live has always been and always will be a great inspiration for me. I love feeding off of that energy from the crowd.” And in a true demonstration that home is where the heart is, Lackgren nominates her best musical experience not, as one might expect, appearing on a national TV show but reuniting with her sister for a one-off live show. “My entire family went, and we ended up playing for an extra hour,” she remembers. The Lackgrens, who hail from a Thai-Swedish background, have spread across the world and such reunifications are rare, it seems.

PREVENT FUNGAL INFECTIONS DURING THAILAND’S RAINY SEASON By Dr. Rataporn Ungpakorn, Dermatologist at the Skin Center, Bumrungrad Hospital.

With the onset of Thailand’s rainy season, hospitals and medical clinics see an increase in the number people suffering from fungal infections. You don’t have to be one of them!

What causes fungal infections?

There are many types of fungi in the world, but only a small percentage make people sick. Most fungal diseases either grow on the surface of the skin or hair or thrive in the shallow layers of the skin, hair, and nails. There are more serious fungal infections that can infect the insides of your body, but the majority of fungal infections remain on the outside of the body. Although they are embarrassing and irritating, they are treatable. Fungal infections thrive in warm, dark, and humid places, which is why they occur more often during Thailand’s rainy season. Fungal infections are also highly contagious. They can spread easily through direct contact such as sharing the hairbrush of an infected person or by using a locker room or a public pool with someone who has a fungal infection. Common fungal infections include athlete’s foot and jock itch. These are characterized by itchy, red, and scaly dry patches on the feet and groin areas, respectively. Ringworm will begin with these symptoms and then grow into a larger red ring that can occur anywhere on the body. Candida, which is caused by yeast growth on the skin, will cause the infected area to itch

and therefore become red and swollen. Another common skin infection, pityriasis versicolor, can be recognized by pale-colored round or ovalshaped patches on the skin, especially on the chest and upper arms.

Preventing fungal infections this rainy season

If you are careful and keep your skin clean and dry during rainy season, particularly in areas that are prone to being in the dark with minimal ventilation, you can reduce your chances of contracting a fungal infection. Wash your body, particularly your feet and groin areas, every day. To ward off fungal infections of the scalp, use anti-dandruff shampoo several times a month in conjunction with your normal shampoo. Make sure to thoroughly dry off before putting on clean dry clothing. Applying talcum powder will keep your skin dry and prevent it from sticking or rubbing together. Rubbing can also lead to heat rash, another common skin irritant that is common during Thailand’s rainy season. Some skin powder brands are medicated and will sooth your skin and reduce perspiration. Wearing clothes made out of moisture wicking material is also an excellent way to keep your skin dry, particularly if you are prone to excessive sweating. If you do get wet or damp, do not sit around in your clothes. Change out of your

wet bathing suit after swimming or damp underwear and socks after playing sports and put on loose fitting clothes to let your skin breath.

Treating fungal infections

Surface fungal infections are not difficult to treat. There are several treatments available depending on the cause of infection, location, and severity. After your doctor has diagnosed your fungal infection, you may be prescribed a topical cream or ointment. There are also medicated shampoos available if your fungal infection is in your scalp. Sometimes pills are necessary to take in order to fight the infection. Be careful this rainy season to prevent an irritating rash. With these preventative tips, a fungal infection shouldn’t stop you from having fun this summer.

Here are several obstacles new expats are faced with and ways to work them out: Job: Inquire if your new job can put you in touch with a mentor who can guide you through clocking in, commuting to work, the dress code, and office dynamics. Ask to speak to a recently hired employee because they may share similar feelings and experiences as you and be open for discussion. Environment and Culture: Quality of life, public behavior, and social expectations will be different from what you are used to. Enrolling in language classes and watching movies or reading

Friends: With the internet available at your finger tips, it is possible to browse for local social groups. Many major cities have clubs established by people just like you looking to make connections and to share hobbies, whether it’s crafts, sports, or discussions. Food: Surprisingly, food will play a big role in your daily life in both physical and emotional comforts. Indulge in local dishes, but if you are feeling nostalgic for a familiar home-cooked meal, treat yourself to it without feeling guilty. Being flexible and able to adapt to your new living situation will ultimately help you establish a new “normal” more quickly.
