MORE THAN A GEM By Dave Stamboulis
T
he sleepy town of Chanthaburi, despite being only a 3-4 hour drive from Bangkok, stays off the radar of most weekend warriors. This eastern Thai town isn’t on the beach (although the Eastern Seaboard resorts are just a short jaunt away), and while the city has received plenty of press for its weekend gems market, it seems that both locals and visitors are missing out on some of its charms. The old historic Chanthaboon waterfront, which pays homage to Chanthaburi’s multicultural past, has been restored and is now one of the few spots in Thailand one can step back in time and do some serious unwinding in. Chanthaburi has long been a prominent stop on the Southeast Asian trade route and was even occupied by French colonial troops at the end of the 1800s for twelve years. The city has always had a strong Chinese population and even a large concentration of ethnic Vietnamese who came here to escape anti-Catholic persecution and the conflicts in Indochina. The local architecture reflects this, with the town’s most prominent landmark, the imposing Gothic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Thailand’s largest Catholic church, rising above the Chanthaburi River. Nearby, the old waterfront is a collection of crumbling SinoPortuguese architecture, much of it now being restored by the town’s conservation committee.
There are old murals and shop-fronts that were done up to resemble a version of Havana, and thus, signs for Casa Libro or Floridita will leave you wondering exactly where you are. Along Sukhapiban Road, stately old homes line the waterfront; former row houses of Penang merchants, wooden teak homes of Thai noblemen, and plenty of other odes to days long gone by. The old Chinese drugstore building, well over 100 years old, still has traditional Chinese medicine boxes, and these days, the local pharmacist is getting as many requests for photos as she is for remedies. Many of the buildings on the river side of Sukhapiban have been turned into laidback cafes, which even the youngster set of Chanthaburi have deemed cool and trendy enough to merit hanging out in. One particularly lovely spot, Tamajun (Tel. 039-311-977), has become a restaurant and live music pub, with plenty of retro furniture and charm, and the owners are about to open a restored boutique hotel right on the river. Another big reason to visit Chanthaburi is for its excellent cuisine. The town is noted for its durians, which when in season, are abundant and exquisitely tasty, as the province produces about a quarter of the world’s durian supply. Most shops
in town sell various types of durian cookies, cakes, chips, and other pastries honoring the odiferous fruit. One local restaurant, Chantorn Pochana (102/5-8 Benchamarachuti Rd. Tel. 039-302-350) has taken this to another level, offering up an outstanding Massaman curry made with durian. Chantorn also does a fabulous stew made with pork and chamuang leaves, another local specialty, as well as mangosteen yam salads, when in season.

Down on the waterfront, there are some little hole-in-the-wall places open during the day that serve the same fare they have been dishing out for decades. One nameless spot just past the Rocky ice creamery is run by an aged woman who dishes out the locally acclaimed kuay tiaow puu nam (noodles with crab meat soup), and despite the weathered, wooden, shack-like surroundings, the everyday-packed crowd lets you know just how much practice she’s had in churning out her flavor-laden bowls. Yes, plenty of folks do still come to Chanthaburi for its weekend gems mart, a ten-minute stroll from the riverfront and bustling with traders on Saturday and Sunday mornings. A stop in the local Muslim restaurants lining Sri Chan Road will reveal Indian, Sri Lankan, Nigerian, and dozens of other nationalities all carrying suitcases full of their wares ready to engage in business. Chanthaburi is the center of Thailand’s sapphire and ruby mining trade, and for those who know their precious stones, it is a good place to pick up some
deals. For those who aren’t gem savvy, it is still a fun and safe spot to walk around and check out the trade, and the traders tend to be pretty friendly and open to questions and browsing. It’s rare in Thailand, let alone in Asia, to find genuine charm based on the old-fashioned, as flashy, new, and trendy tend to get all the headlines. But the retro movement in Bangkok over the past year or two is a comforting one, and one needs to go no further than Chanthaburi to find plenty of yesteryear to wax nostalgic. Being off the tourist trail, Chanthaburi is still a great bargain. The town is small enough to walk in, and the best hotel in town, the spiffy Kasemsarn (Tel. 039-311-100, www.hotelkasemsarn.com), has boutique-style rooms at less than 1,000 baht and is just minutes from the old waterfront. The Chantorn restaurant is right next door, the bus station is a tenminute stroll away, and there isn’t much traffic. What more could you want?

SOUL FOOD FOR STRANGERS By Samantha Proyrungtong
A
gorgeous pint-sized brunette woman wearing a cream-and-striped apron with a nervous grin from ear to ear opened the door and welcomed us warmly into her home. How bizarre, I thought, it must feel to invite complete strangers over for dinner. Megan eagerly ushered us in and informed us that we were the first to arrive. Her apartment was tastefully decorated, homely, and spacious. As we walked across the living room, I noticed her large, oblong oak table set with a woven striped cloth, matching printed china, silverware and bright blue-colored napkins. I got that proverbial pang of excitement. I mean, when was the last time you sat down at real dining table at someone’s place and got spoilt rotten with endless rustic courses? In the last year, I recall mostly meats on sticks, spicy salads in bags, plastic bowls of noodles, and the occasional splurge at a favorite or new restaurant.

which has nothing to do with Mexican cuisine. My purpose is to introduce people and foodies to authentic cuisine from my childhood and sometimes I’m happy to put a Thai twist to it!” The first dish served, and unmistakably one of my favorites even though they were all so fantastically scrumptious, was the Tostadas de Ceviche (ceviche tostadas with fresh white prawn and seabass). Then came Pork Tinga with homemade flour tortillas, pickled red onion with Mexican oregano, sliced avocado, and fresh cheese. Chicken Picadillo Tamales with Zucchini Salad with a jalapeño and coriander vinaigrette dressing. And for the pièce de résistance, Flan Antigua (traditional flan) with homemade Mango and Pineapple Sorbet.
Don’t get me wrong, Asian street food is tasty and partly the reason why we love Thailand, but there is something indescribably euphoric and spiritual about a proper gathering around a large table. That’s if we ever give ourselves the time to make it happen, a forgotten custom that modern city dweller can only romance about. Hello, first-world problems, here we are. And PlateCulture (www.plateculture.com) is the first-world solution to this. Straight from the website’s, er, mouth: PlateCulture is a dining concept that connects people who love cooking and hosting dinners with people who love eating authentic home-cooked meals. Each dinner is a unique experience where people can share food, discover new cultures, and build friendships. Hosts can showcase their culinary skills and meet interesting people without leaving the comfort of their kitchen. Our host escorted us into her kitchen where we immediately stepped into “Megan’s World.” She bounced around the massive kitchen, touring us through her dishes, imparting at a mile-a-minute the history of each meal and the Mexican feast she had in store for us. Somewhere between opening her dream townhouse fusion Mexican-Thai restaurant and the homemade mango-with-pineapple sorbet and her love for graffiti art, my fiancé and I asked for her hand in marriage. She was one of the brightest, most effervescent, and charismatic women I hadn’t met for a long time. On a more serious note, we asked how Megan came about PlateCulture. She explained that her friend had told her about the concept, and she figured what better way to practice and share her fascination for cooking than hosting dinner parties? Plus, Megan said, that she loved meeting new and interesting people. This motivated her to apply for hosting a dinner on the website, completely fearful nobody would confirm, but guests promptly paid for their seats and “Ole!” – her dinner sold out. The doorbell rang a few times after we arrived, first was a Ukrainian couple who worked for the UN, then a large group of friends, one whom was a writer, the other working for a cosmetics brand, a photographer, a long-stay tourist, and a veteran wanderlust couple. Almost everyone was from different ethnic background, ages, and occupations. But we became quickly unified, as one does when meeting strangers within close proximities. I had the sudden reminder of house parties where individuals of the oddest mix were thrown together through sheer awkwardness and obligation. But I found this was a pleasant break from the weekly routine rounding-up of buddies, but more to the point, I’ve met some of my best friends by way of this wonderful serendipity. I’d advise if you were coming to one of these dinners, it would be customary to bring a small contribution, but it’s not absolutely necessary. I was impressed to see that guests had brought wine or beer, which we had forgotten, but instead we offered a pot of VIVIN foie gras, which was a huge hit amongst the guests. After a lot of chatting and tempering our inhibitions with cool wine while snacking on Megan’s amazing tortilla chips with homemade super spicy dip and guacamole, it was time to dine. What I loved most about Megan’s cuisine is that you can absolutely savor the three-day labor of love, cooking and preparing her home-derived masterpieces. This ain’t no Tex-Mex! Megan says, “Unfortunately, most people are only familiar with Tex-Mex,
By this stage, everyone was in a heightened state of fulfillment and contentment, intoxicated from the excellent food and tipsy from wine. We moved from the couch into a large circle, some cross-legged on the floor cushions and others on the ends of the sofa while some groovy Mexican tunes played in the background over our loud chatter. Megan also gave us a tour of her family pictures after we insisted when discovering a tender cover photo of her wedding album. In one night, we learned our Mexican-American born host, after having two equally gorgeous kids with her high-powered husband and living all around Europe trying various cooking businesses from home, was taking her passion to another level. Megan would be attending the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School the next semester, and her hopes of having her own homestyle restaurant would soon become a reality. Coming into a kind stranger’s home, having them welcome you by serving up their prideful and culturally rich dishes, plus letting you into their personal lives and intimate stories was a gift I was grateful to take home with me this evening; not to mention, the interesting and hilarious characters I met along the way. Finally, when hands were shook, hugs exchanged, and air-kisses blown, I imagined it was unlikely we would ever meet these people again. Yet, the whole experience inspired me to dream for a bigger space with a bigger table and, more importantly, a greater ability to cook.

UP, UP, AND AWAY By Dave Stamboulis
W
hile most Bangkok restaurant reviews one reads these days usually has a buzzword such as ‘Thonglor’, ‘fusion’, ‘hi-so’, or ‘foodie’ repeated virtually every paragraph, occasionally something offbeat and completely the opposite to all these slips under the radar. Such is Kraton, otherwise known as the Flying Chicken Restaurant. At this rather unglamorous and out in the middle of nowhere eatery in Bang Na, your chicken does not cross the road to get to the other side. Instead, your grilled bird is set in a catapult, and then vaulted across the restaurant to a waiter who is riding a unicycle and wearing a helmet affixed with a trio of metal skewers! The bird gets launched, the server pedals forward, and in seconds, only a quiet pfffft sound lets you know that the chicken has landed, or should we say shishkebabed, stabbed onto the skewer, and shortly thereafter, delivered to your table – standing up, decapitated, and with a flag in its head! Thailand is known for some interesting eateries. There is a place up in Phitsanulok that specializes in a chef stir-frying pak bung (morning glory) up on a platform in the air, and then heaving it over his shoulder out of the wok when done, with the greens landing perfectly upon diners’ plates below. There is the Japanese hot pot restaurant in Bangkok that uses robots to serve the food, and then there is the three-hectare Royal Dragon, one
of the largest restaurants on the planet, where all the waiters wear roller skates and ride zip-lines. However Katron stands out in its novel approach to making a meal fun. The restaurant has actually been in business for 27 years, and started out by trying to win over customers by firing their freshly grilled chicken in the air, with waiters trying to catch the birds across the way on upheld plates. This evolved to the waiters riding unicycles and has even expanded to include somersaulting waiters riding on the shoulders of the unicyclists! These days, a helmet law is in effect, and many of the unicyclists wear full motorcycle helmets that have metal spikes sticking off them, perfect for spearing the airborne poultry. In addition to chicken, the menu features most Thai classics with plenty of varieties of tom yum, yum salads, and seafood dishes available. And while the food here is no great shakes (read as: very mediocre) and a tad overpriced, you aren’t coming here for the gastronomy. Katron is the spot you want to take out a bunch of friends, have a few too many to drink, and just enjoy a big laugh over it all. Indeed, the restaurant seems to be catering to exactly this, as

much of it is set up with private karaoke rooms, and for those who don’t want a secret sing-along, well, there are plenty of truly tone-deaf maidens who serenade the crowd between flying fowls. There is a play area for the kids, and of course, diners are invited to come up on stage and try their luck at skewering a bird (although you’ll only be allowed to pose for photos on the unicycles, not ride them). Katron has been publicized around the world, and plaques and banners around the restaurant proudly attest to the fact that their flying bird tactics have been covered by over 200 different media representatives. However, the location of the joint out on the Bangna-Trad Road, surrounded by industrial wasteland, probably does not garner it the walk-in traffic it wishes it had. You can get here by taking the BTS Skytrain to Bang Na station and walking the several-kilometer stretch of sprawl and cars, or else hop a taxi and be at the restaurant in minutes. All the taxi drivers know Katron, although sometimes only as “gai loy fah” (the flying chicken!). Katron supposedly used to set the chickens afire before catapulting them, but perhaps in this day of law and order, the fire department has decreed otherwise. On the night I visited, there were no flying flames, and most of the birds were wrapped in aluminum foil before being exposed to the elements. Also, remember that, if you don’t order chicken, there is no show. They don’t catapult pork, beef, or fish here, and it is best to arrive
around 7:30-8:00, when most of the diners are ordering birds en masse. By 8:30, the spearing of flying birds had dwindled to just the odd poulèt. In addition to the bird at your table, the bill comes along with a fabulous plastic whoopee chicken as a present, so you can continue the dinnertime fun on the return home. It’s worth coming out here just for all the stories you will have the next time you are eating in Thonglor. The six short stories make beautiful cross-references with characters in seemingly other unrelated stories in the collection, giving After the Wave the feel of a book that not only recounts the fictional lives of individual tsunami survivors, but rather those of a whole community of both grieving locals and foreigners who survived or who lost their loved ones during the Boxing By Voicu Mihnea Simandan Day tsunami. One such book is After the Wave – Short Stories of Post Tsunami on the Thai Andaman Coast by Tew Bunnag, a small collection of six short stories the writer penned based on his personal experience when working with the poorest communities and those affected with HIV in the tsunami-affected areas in Thailand. The book was initially published in 2005 by Post Publishing and more recently in 2010 by Metavisions, a small independent publisher, which has reprinted it under the simpler title of After the Wave. Cambridge-educated Tew Bunnag was commissioned in 2005 by the BBC to write a short story to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on the first anniversary of the 2004 tsunami. It was this story, “Lek and Mrs. Miller,” that opens the book. It is a powerful and emotional story about the emptiness people who lost family members in the tsunami felt even months after the reconstruction process had started. Lek, now living in a temporary housing estate, is the son of a fisherman and has lost everything in the tsunami, including his father and brother. Working the night shift at a still under-construction resort in Phuket, Lek feels intrigued by Mrs. Miller’s behavior and demeanor: “Her composure and the sadness that enveloped her like a transparent veil stirred in him a mixture of curiosity and protectiveness.” On her last day on the island, before returning to London, Lek gathers the courage to approach her, and although he doesn’t fully understand what she says, he realizes how much she misses the family she lost in the tsunami.
Immediately after the tsunami, as director and advisor for several programs aimed at helping street children and AIDS patients with the Human Development Foundation, the author started working with underprivileged communities of Muslims, Sea Gypsies, New Thai, and Chow Lay from the south of Thailand who had been directly and severely damaged by the tsunami. Although he has put a lot of personal and professional effort into his job, with proceeds from the sales of his books being used to help the survivors, his biggest regret is that NGOs could not reach out to the immigrant Burmese population, as many were (and still are) illegal workers and didn’t want to seek assistance. “The Tsunami was an extraordinary phenomenon that changed the lives of everyone in the whole affected region. It has left much sadness in its wake as well as puzzlement, and many difficulties and problems which will take years to resolve. I have told these stories to honour those who were killed, those who still grieve, and those who carry on courageously in their efforts to re-establish their livelihood,” concludes the author in his introduction to After the Wave.
Since 2000, Tew Bunnag has been dividing his time between Spain and Thailand, from where he writes exclusively in English about the dichotomy between modernization and Thai traditional values. His other books include works of nonfiction, short stories, and novels: Fragile Days, The Naga’s Journey, The House of Raja: Splendour and Desolation in Thailand’s Deep South, and Cloud Hands: The Essence of T’ai Chi Chu’uan. He has also contributed short stories to Asia Literary Review and Bangkok Noir and is the founder of “Lek and Mrs. Miller” is a touching story that proves how much both the lo- The European School of T’ai Chi Chu’uan. HEALTHY TALKS Decoding menopause: from stormy weather to sunny skies.

hen we think of the word ‘menopause,’ many of us imagine a middle-aged woman who experiences regular – and violent – mood swings, which causes the people around her to become fed up. But very few of us understand what causes these shifts in a woman’s mood and how best to manage it, and if it might even be preventable so it doesn’t occur when we finally enter menopause.
However none of these symptoms or conditions is life-threatening, especially if a woman sees a specialist or visits a menopause clinic as soon as symptoms occur. A good start for a happy ending
The age of change brings many physical changes to a woman’s body, and if not cared for properly, many problems may occur that can prevent a normal and happy life once a woman reaches 60. That is why it is important to start improving quality of life when menopause begins. This is especially true for women today whose lifestyles make them particularly prone to illness. Factors that affect health include improper food intake, lack of exercise, and avoiding exposure to sunlight, which leads to Vitamin D deficiency. Furthermore, many women smoke and drink alcohol regularly, which leads to osteoporosis and brain deterioration.
There are many advantages to HRT in menopausal women, including reduction of hot flashes, depression, memory loss, problems of the urinary and reproductive systems, as well as increasing bone mass and preventing ischemic heart disease, if HRT is begun early, before symptoms occur. To ensure safety and effectiveness, HRT should be carefully observed and results monitored closely.

PULLING YOUR WEIGHT By Voicu Mihnea Simandan
In Thailand, the public is constantly aware of the political games of tug-ofwar that take place between this party and that party over what bill to pass or not to pass, over who is better at spending the taxpayers’ money, or over who can block more streets and who can create utter chaos and total standstill in Bangkok. A few years ago, a Chinese newspaper even published a brilliant cartoon of two ropes squeezing a map of Thailand to death, and although we were not shown who were pulling the ropes, it was quite clear and very humorous, as one rope was yellow and the other one was red, which offered a direct connection to the two political sides of Thai politics.

As with all recognized sports, tug-of-war players must follow a set of rules. These regulations might not mean that much in a match between friends who have found a long rope on the beach and decided to have a playful go at it, but in international events such as the World Games or the World Championships, the rules make sure no team gets an unfair advantage over their opponent. Thus, a team is made up of eight players whose total mass must correspond to the weight class they compete in. During the tug itself, players cannot lower their elbow below the knee or pull the rope over their shoulder. Tug-of-war was even a sport within the Olympic Games until 1920, but it seems that there are very small chances of it ever being reinstalled to its former status in the modern games. The Tug-of-War International Federation (www.tugofwar-twif.org) recognizes over 60 international associations and federations, one of which is the Tug-of-War Thailand Association. Surprisingly, all but three Southeast Asian countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, and Timor Leste) are members of the Tug-of-War International Federation (TWIF), and there has definitely been a push in the region to raise awareness of this sport and attract more players and spectators. After all, if tug-ofwar will ever be accepted back into the Olympic Games, it will have to have not only a strong international federation lobbying for it, but also have a huge public following to physically support it.
Of course, then again, there is also the genuine tug-of-war between elephants and men, a fun activity that takes place in Surin Province during the highly popular Surin Elephant Round-up fair each year. Every third week of November, in a series of elephant-related shows and games, over seventy men try to win in a game of tug-of-war against an elephant that can weigh as much as five tons! Earlier this year, Bangkok was even the host of a Tug-of-War Developmental Course for Coaches and Judges where over 100 delegates from nine Asian But how about tug-of-war, the actual sport itself, which has origins going countries were drilled by a coach from England under the supervision of all the way back to ancient Egypt and ancient China, and which, hundreds the president of TWIF. While the initial meaning of the phrase ‘tug-of-war’ referred to a real struggle for military supremacy, the meaning changed in the 19th century According to Rawipas Klamthawee, the Secretary General responsible for to denote what modern dictionaries now refer to as a contest in which two foreign and political affairs at the Tug-of-War Thailand Association, these teams pull at opposite ends of a rope, with the team that is dragged across two events were major steps that Thailand took while preparing a strong a central line losing the bout. national team to participate in the 2nd Asian Tug-of-War Championships,

If you want to find out more information about tug-of-war and how you can make a team or join one of the existing teams, contact the Tugof-War Thailand Association at 081-929-7819 or send them an email to twta_1@hotmail.com. which will be held in Mongolia in June 2014. The tug-of-war movement in Thailand revived in 2009 under the vision of the former Deputy Prime Minister Korn Dabbaransi, who believed that tugof-war should be developed and promoted in Thailand. “With this in mind, we wish to create a national team who will be able to compete at an international level,” said Narit Singwancha, the president of the Tug-of-War Thailand Association. This might actually be an achievable objective, as at the moment, there are 120 tug-of-war clubs spread all over Thailand, mostly in schools and vocational colleges, but it is also rather active within the Thai army as well. These clubs can surely provide quality players, as each club has approximately around fifty regular members. At present, the Thai national team is comprised of both junior (under 15 years of age) and senior players that make up the official six teams for the male, female, and mixed events. They are training under the supervision of Jerry Shu, an experienced coach from Taiwan, whose ultimate goal for the near future is to win a place for Thailand in the Tug-of-War World Championships that will be held in August 2014 in Wisconsin, USA. “Anyone can play the sport of tug-of-war,” says Rawipas Klamthawee, “regardless of how heavy they are. Of course, they need to be physically fit and undergo a strict training regimen, but that is not even the most important thing. What matters most in tug-of-war is the spirit of the game, the trust you put in your fellow teammates and the willingness not to give up. It’s a sport that gets people together and forms bonds of friendship that might last for a lifetime.” Tug-of-war is a very spectacular sport to watch, especially with friends and family. If you would like to experience the absolute madness and energy of a crowd cheering-on its favorite team, then make sure you don’t miss the 1st Asian Tug-of-War Championships, which will be held at Huamark Indoor Stadium on Ramkhamhaeng Road this December 1st-4th.
