Urban
Art
By Dave Stamboulis
I visited Berlin several years ago and was amazed by the urban street art that seemed to cover almost every inch of the city. While the infamous Berlin Wall was noted for its graffiti and avant-garde artwork, graffiti and urban building painting was still considered a crime, and while the laws still remain, the police mostly turn a blind eye. The industry has flourished, and street art in Berlin is now a must-visit tourist attraction, with dozens of tour companies offering in-depth tours to take in the city art that helps define Germany’s capital. While Bangkok most certainly isn’t Berlin, the last year has seen a rise of urban art. Whether it is just an offshoot of the spirit of protest (which there seems to be an awful lot of in recent times) or an embracing of the need for Bangkok to be a viable place for local and international artists to showcase their work, it is a welcome addition
to have some color added to our daily urban grind. Last year, the Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BAAC, which critics claim has never lived up to its defining Bangkok contemporary art mecca label) provided four hundred square meters of exhibition space to BUKRUK, a Thai-European collaboration of street artists that spilled out into the streets and exhibited live paintings and murals by well-known artists. The area around Ratchathewi was considerably livened up, with hundreds of meters of the dreary Saen Saeb canal being adorned with wall paintings, and several abandoned buildings below the BTS station getting covered with artwork. Patcharapon Tangruen, better known as Alex Face, a popular Thai graffiti artist, whose architecture studies and curiosity led him to seek out abandoned buildings

with surfaces where he could express himself, put up several large paintings here, after spending four days with a French artist, to completely cover the first floor of the Alliance Francaise in expressionist murals. Just recently, the Ratchaprasong skywalk was home to the 2014 Living Art Festival, where 31 international artists from around the globe came to show off their 3-D paintings, tape art, and living statue repertoires. Interactive paintings have become a popular draw in Thailand with the recent openings of several branches of the Art in Paradise museum in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Pattaya, sending selfie- and Instagram-manic locals to lap up the chance to put their head in a crocodile’s mouth or hang off a crumbling suspension bridge. The chance to do this out in public with no entrance fee proved wildly popular, with the skywalk filled with onlookers and a most welcome happy vibe lent to an area often filled with stressed-out faces. In addition to the interactive art, living statues graced the Ratchaprasong area, each trying to prod the normally reticent shoppers stuck in their iPhones or other sensory deprivation devices into a bit of fun and games. The most successful was a Berlin artist named John Eicke, who plays a character named ‘Blanco,’ who starts the day sitting silently in an all-white suit. Next to him is a table full of cans of paint and brushes, and eventually someone gets up the courage to paint something on his suit. Eventually, the crowd takes over, and Blanco gets covered in color from head to toe, needless to say, to abundant amusement. The popularity of street art has even started to spread into the nearby malls… perhaps a signal that it has gone mainstream? The new upscale Groove Mall at CentralWorld prominently features a giant 3-D painting at its downstairs entrance, and a wander through the mall will reveal full-wall Japanese anime paintings, plus all sorts of various pop-art displays fronting several of the establishments. The contemporary pop-art street style can even be seen at the BAAC, where Buddhist and Ramayana themes get portrayed in anime styles on giant cross-wall murals on various floors of the center. While Bangkok still has a long way to go on the international artistry front, and even has a bit of catching up to do to get on par with ASEAN art movements in the Philippines or Indonesia, the spark has started, and it looks like the wildfire is set to spread. One thing is for certain – the dabs of paint and comic relief are a most welcome addition to the city.

Day tripping: Ang Tong By Voicu Mihnea Simandan
With the madness of social media and different apps taking hold of almost every aspect of our lives these days, people in Thailand have also now gone mad about travelling all the way from their homes to certain destinations within the Kingdom for the simple reason of taking a ‘moom mahachon’ or a ‘mass shot.’ These are photos of people posing at famous locations and then uploading them onto their Facebook or Instagram accounts for the entire world to see. Once the photos become viral, everyone who has the time and can afford it, travels to that same place to take that same picture, in that same posture, only to show it off on their own social media accounts. To me, that’s pretty much just like saying “I’ve taken a picture there” and isn’t any different from your average photo snappy-friendly, yet oft-belittled, Japanese tourist. A destination in Thailand where you can be any kind of tourist you like is the province of Ang Thong where the traveler seeking a genuine immersion in the classic Thai ways of life can roam among the bat-filled trees at Wat Chanthraram, whereas the tourist looking for lesser-known destinations can snap pictures of the terraced-shaped chedi at Wat Ta-It, and social media-obsessed

As you walk through the temple compound, a drive-in flanked by well-maintained bushes and trees will give you a good photo opportunity of the eight-story chedi, which, as strange as it may sound, looks just like a finished version of Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s representation of The Tower of Babel! Wat Ta-It was built in 1761 and was originally used as a center for firebrick production and distribution and hence its name as the ‘Temple of Brick Port.’ The golden chedi is a modern structure, but it houses two historically important images of the Lord Buddha. If you don’t mind the heat inside, you can actually go all the way up to the top of the chedi. Officially known as Phra Buddha Maha Nawamin, this huge Buddha statue stands at 92-meters tall and 63-meters wide and was completed in 2008. The Lord Buddha is sculpted with legs crossed, the left hand facing upward on his lap, while his right hand rests on the right leg, with the fingers curling down almost to the pedestal. Seen from aside, it is this exact location that is the coveted moom mahachon – the curved golden fingers of the Lord Buddha with a clear blue sky in the background. But since there has been so much hype on the internet about it, the place is always packed, and the chances of actually taking a clean, clear shot are slight these days, unfortunately. All the destinations described are free of charge to visit and are easily accessible by motorcycle taxis or tuk-tuks if you do not have your own car to get there. From Bangkok, you can reach Ang Thong by bus from the Northern Terminal Bus Station on Kamphaeng Phet 2 road or by minivan from Victory Monument. If you drive there yourself, you can easily find your way to and within Ang Thong using Google Maps. And post your moom mahachon to our Mango Metro Facebook page while you’re at it!

Digestive Threats
Commonplace symptoms belie more serious health threat Abdominal cramps or diarrhea don’t often point to something serious. But for millions of sufferers around the world, these routine-like symptoms turn out to be a more serious digestive disorder known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Most people shrug off the occasional bout of diarrhea or abdominal cramps. After a few unpleasant days, the symptoms will clear up on their own and life will return to normal. But not always. When symptoms clear up briefly but then return, or when they persist without relief, this may actually indicate something more serious – a chronic condition affecting millions of people worldwide known as inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD.

er small intestine to the upper part of the colon (large intestine).
The exact cause of IBD isn’t known, but it’s marked by inflammation in either or both the small intestine and the large intestine. IBD is comprised of two main disorders: Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). “Both conditions are more prevalent in western countries and the Middle East,” notes Dr. Sinn. “They’re both prevalent in Asia, but the rate of incidence across the region is lower. As a consequence of this, the general public doesn’t hear much about IBD. Doctors generally won’t have much experience diagnosing and treating IBD, and many may not have been trained to recognize the role that ethnic differences can have in causing symptom variations.”
• Bowel wall abscess: An abscess is a collection of liquefied tissue called pus that forms while the bowel undergoes self-repair. During this process, inflammation triggers the formation of abscesses that may cause a blockage of the intestinal tunnel;
To learn more about IBD, we sought the expertise of Dr. Sinn Anuras, Bumrungrad’s Group Medical Director and a U.S.-board-certified gastroenterol- Here’s a more detailed look at the ogist and hepatologist. The inflammation resulting from Crohn’s disease leads to several painful conditions, including:
• Fistulas: Fistulas are abnormal openings or passageways that connect two organs or body cavities (e.g., bladder and vagina) that are not supposed to be connected; • Intestinal inflammation: Inflammation can lead to the formation of tissue masses in areas inside the small and large intestines. Ulcerative colitis (UC) Ulcerative colitis can be a serious, potentially fatal disease that causes inflammation in the wall of the colon. Symptoms range from bloody defecation and high fever to fatigue and unexplained weight loss; some patients experience inflammation of the liver, eyes, and joints. Ulcerative colitis usually responds to treatment. “Once the inflammation is brought under control, patients can live a normal life,” notes Dr. Sinn. Diagnostic challenges Correctly diagnosing IBD is quite difficult thanks to Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis producing many of the same symptoms. “It can be difficult to spot the difference

IBD, just as it is for managing other chronic con- among medical professionals in Thailand and ditions.” overseas.” Not all patients are good candidates for medication – notably those with other, co-existing health problems. For these patients, and for those who haven’t responded to treatment with medication, surgery may be the next best option. “Surgery may be recommended for treating ulcerative colitis, since the disease is confined within the colon,” Dr. Sinn explains. “But Crohn’s disease affects both intestines; surgery is generally not recommended except where connective tissues have narrowed a patient’s bowel tunnels, which makes it harder for food to pass through the narrower lumen.”
While IBD and other chronic diseases can last a lifetime, patients don’t have to give up their hope of enjoying a good quality of life. If you know IBD’s symptoms and take appropriate action when faced with those symptoms, you will be in a much better position to bring the condition under control. Get to know the symptoms of IBD Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis share these commonplace symptoms:
• Abdominal cramps that cause pain when pressure is applied; Dedicated IBD Clinic • Diarrhea occurring multiple times per day; Specialized knowledge and training are all the • Bloody stools; more important in light of IBD’s nondescript • Unexplained weight loss; symptom profile and variability related to patient • Constantly feeling tired or fatigued. between the two conditions based on symptoms alone,” Dr. Sinn explains. “In their early stages, both CD and UC cause abdominal pain and diarrhea. In severe cases, patients may have to defecate more than ten times a day around the clock, and sometimes interrupting a good night’s sleep. Both diseases can lead to blood in stools, bouts of high fever, and loss of weight resulting from the body’s inability to absorb nutrients.” Dr. Sinn describes the complex process that may be necessary to yield an accurate diagnosis: “A patient’s condition is termed chronic when symptoms continue for more than two weeks and prove unresponsive to medication. Laboratory stool testing may be used to detect the presence of an infection or inflammation. If no infection is found, a colonoscopy and a CT scan may be needed to determine the patient’s condition and the location of the affected area. Laboratory testing of tissue samples from the patient’s intestines may be needed to confirm the diagnosis and determine the specific disease type.” Living with IBD means dealing with daily challenges that can greatly affect a patient’s quality of life, especially considering the frequent need to defecate and the resulting loss of blood and important nutrients. It can certainly affect a patient’s quality of life with complications including anemia. In the case of both CD and UC, when chronic inflammation goes undiagnosed and untreated, patients are at a higher risk for developing colorectal cancer. Treatments for IBD Medication is the primary first-line treatment for the two IBD conditions. “After confirming the diagnosis, a doctor will usually prescribe antiinflammatory medication,” Dr. Sinn explains. “As the inflammation subsides, symptoms will dissipate and the illness enters a state of remission. Patients will need to be examined by their doctor at regular intervals. Patient compliance – especially adhering to instructions for taking medication – is the best way to prevent a recurrence of
ethnicity and disease genotype. “More attention is being paid to IBD in Thailand in recent years,” notes Dr. Sinn. “At Bumrungrad, we’ve treated more than 300 new cases of IBD patients, including Thais and patients coming from Asia, Europe, North America, and the Middle East. We reached a point where our significant expertise and the growing volume of patients justified having a dedicated IBD Clinic. Patients certainly appreciate the greater convenience, and it has helped raise awareness about IBD. “Our medical team has extensive IBD training and experience using advanced procedures and technologies, so patients know they’ll enjoy an international standard of care. The specialty clinic is also an important source for data that can be studied and added to the knowledge base
IBD or IBS? It’s easy to confuse inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Beyond their similar names and initials, they produce many of the same symptoms – especially abdominal cramping and frequent diarrhea. But the two are separate, unrelated conditions; IBS affects more people but is much less serious. IBD causes inflammation, but IBS does not. What are the balls made from? How are they made so sturdy and able to absorb a lot of impact? Yes, readers, Bobble Football has bounced around the globe and landed on Bangkok’s own Astroturf. To participate in this ball-bumping frenzy, you are Bradley: The balls are made of a little known substance called bobblanirequired to squirm your way into a transparent blow-up plastic ball that is um. Now set with a new pair able to withstand high impact. of balls, aware of your newfound protection, are you prepared to give the would-be assailants a taste of their own medicine (ball)? I noticed there were different bobble sizes. I asked two of the three intrepid entrepreneurs of Bangkok Bobble Football – Bradley and Danny (Naras is the third) – what this hair-brained scheme sport was all about? It wasn’t long after evaluating their responses to discern that the functioning dynamic between silliness and seriousness, much like the game, is why the sport is destined to be a success. How and where did the idea originate? How did this come about, including the name ‘bobble’? Bradley: The idea for bobble football came about while Brad was a kid. He was the one always left on the bench because his chubby legs weren’t able to move like the other kids legs could. As he sat watching his peers from the bench, in love with the beautiful game but unable to enjoy playing it, he devised a football game where weight is an advantage. Over the years, he made sure he got fatter and fatter, so that one day he could realize his dream of ‘bobble football’ and bring the sport to the masses of those with large masses.
Bradley: We have different size bobbles because some humans are different in size. Some humans are really small and don’t work because they are lazy but instead, sponge off the bigger humans while they spend time learning life. Some people call these little humans ‘kids’. Danny: We have 3 different size bobbles: 1.2m, 1.5m and 1.8m. The smaller ones are for kids and shorter adults, bigger ones are for people that can’t fit into the smaller ones. Why and how did you bring the concept to Thailand? Bradley: Bangkok is full of malls and places for shopping, but there are not so many other activities for people to do during the day. So we knew that if we were to give more options, people would probably be interested to play with our balls.
Danny: We all love the sport of football, and when we saw the rising popularity of the bobble football in other countries, we realized this was a great Danny: The name ‘bobble’ was created by us as a more unique and creative opportunity for us to bring this concept to Thailand where there is a huge

Bradley: To be honest, we have a set of rules that, basically, are the same as football, but it becomes pretty difficult to enforce them. Especially me, I’m a terrible referee and just want to watch people banging each other all the time. The main rule is that while you can hit the player with the ball from any direction, if someone does not have the ball, you can only bump them the air and find him/herself in the back of the net. So if you are super-competitive, you may walk away from bobble football with a bruised ego and a pain How difficult is it compared to regular football? in your backside. What are the biggest challenges? Who are your sponsors and how do they relate to the sport? Bradley: While real football requires quite a lot of skill, bobble football requires almost none at all. That is the beauty of it. The biggest challenge is Bradley: We have been super lucky with our sponsors, because they know looking cool in front of the girls who are watching. He figured this was a bit hypocritical, so he started thinking about what he could do with all the scraps from the construction sites the students were working on, and soon, a ‘scrap lab’ was born with carton boards being turned into divans and sandpaper into stools.
From Garbage to Gold
At the time, local businesses and government ministries thought Intrachooto was nuts or maybe just indulged in a bizarre hobby of some sort, but that has all changed, as his design company, OSISU, has had sales grow by 30-40% each year. Intrachooto says that in 2007, they were exporting almost entirely to the U.S., Sweden, and the U.K., with maybe only a couple of product pieces sold in Thailand, but these days, 50% of the OSISU line is sold here. Awareness of local design has gone up, and people are more green-conscious. Additionally, nouveau furniture design is all the rage in Thailand right now, with over 10,000 entrepreneurs aiming for a share of the market.

Growing up in California in the 1970s and ‘80s, I was heavily exposed to the rampant green recycling movement that was taking place at the time. This was the beginning of the consumer anti-waste movement that was about to sweep the country, where a large majority of people actually started caring about the products they were using and consuming and just exactly what impact these goods were having on the planet and one’s immediate surroundings. Back then, we were taught not to dispose, but to reuse, and to avoid buying products that couldn’t be recycled. Right about this time, a large market sprang up for waste management programs, making people realize that even beyond being good caretakers of Planet Earth, there was money to be made doing so, as well, but nobody had any idea that the recyclers of then would be laying the groundwork for the ‘upcyclers’ today and for one novel inventor at the forefront of the Thai recycling movement.
While Thailand still has a long way to go in terms of environmental awareness, Intrachooto thinks that the future is bright for green products, and he also believes that running an open, equal, and amiable business is a key to success. As he says, “Living your passion and being good to the environment is a good model for business. My friends used to tell me that we were too honest and shared too much information with competitors, Living for a decade in the U.S., Dr. Singh was ex- but I think it is far better to be friendly, honest, posed to a lot of open green space and a plethora and invite people to dis-cuss things together that of recycling programs and consciousness to go will all benefit us in the long run.” along with it, and he has taken this, along with his M.I.T. field of study, to heart, creating Thailand’s first upcycling program. Whereas traditional waste man-agement research focused on recycling, little effort was devoted to reuse or design or even, god forbid, the notion that you could turn a hefty profit from it. Upcycling takes something that has, more or less, no value and turns it into something that has higher value and better quality. When Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth movie came out, companies around the globe began looking for green certification and ways to show that they were involved in environmental management on the corporate level, and this is where Dr. Singh came in. Take Starbucks, one of his biggest clients. They decided that they wanted to have energy-efficient coffee shops all over Thailand, so now Intrachooto is creating tables and chairs for them made out of their own used coffee grinds! Over at Singha Brewery, the spent hops and barley grains from the brewing process would normally be thrown away for nothing, but Intrachooto uses these to make design products such as mosaic tiles, and they can also be turned into high-end men’s facial cream products (due to the high yeast content).
Dr. Singh Intrachooto is a pretty busy guy, his day filled with endless meetings, seminars, workshops, classes, and probably a bit of down time stuck in Bangkok traffic (“the antithesis of a planet’s con-scious soul,” as he sees it), which at least gives him time to brainstorm a few new ideas. Intrachooto’s resume reads a bit like an Academy Awards list: Doctorate in Design Technology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Elle Dr. Singh’s trash-to-treasure saga actually beDécor’s Designer of the Year Award, the Top Envi- gan by chance. He was teaching energy-efficient

THE PHANTOM LOVER By Voicu Mihnea Simandan
Tourists come to Thailand to enjoy the great scenery and attractions the Kingdom has to offer, and the people working in the tourism industry are always and forever trying to figure out what’s on the tourists’ minds and how they can serve them even better.
Asia, a short story that takes us to the streets of Bangkok during a bloody coup and military crackdown on demonstrators fighting for democracy. We see the events through the view of Kendall, a freelance photographer who is always looking for the next best shot.
In The Death Kiss of a Cobra, the short story that opens Jim Algie’s collection of short stories The Phantom Lover and Other Thrilling Tales of Thailand (Tuttle Publishing, 2014), the writer takes the reader into the minds of the various people operating on the service side of the tourism industry. The story is a strong start to an even stronger book. From the very first pages, Algie starts to scratch the surface of a few of the major socio-economic problems Thailand faces these days.
Eventually, Kendall does manage to take ‘the perfect shot’ and wins a coveted award and lands a well-paid job as a foreign correspondent in Asia. However, the fame and the money come at the expense of the people who facilitated his sudden rise to fame: the memory and ghost of a Thai student who he might have saved had he not decided to first take a photo of the approaching soldier who dealt the injured student the final blow.
Jim Algie has been a resident of Thailand since 1992 and has contributed to many travel guides and has had his nonfiction and fiction published in several publications around the world. For readers in Thailand, he is mostly known as the author of Bizarre Thailand: Tales of Crime, Sex and Black Magic (2010), which deals with the dark side of some of Thailand’s strangest attractions.
A different look at why some women in Thailand end up working in go-go bars is explored in Wet Nightmares, a short story that introduces us to a prostitute’s savage and harsh world. Unfortunately, for Watermelon, her only way out of poverty is to keep doing what she is doing and hope for a better future after she manages to save enough money to get out of the business and make sure her own “daughter would never end up as a prostitute” as well.
The anthology continues with Flashpoints in The Legendary Nobody is based on a true crime

story, more exactly on See Ouey and his legend as a 1940s Chinese immigrant who became Thailand’s most notorious cannibal. His preserved corpse is still displayed today in a window at the Forensic Science Medicine Museum in Bangkok’s Siriraj Hospital. Obituary for the Khaosan Road Outlaws and Impostors tells the story of Mick, an Englishman who, together with his friend, the narrator, tried to find their luck in Bangkok by trafficking people to other countries (mostly South Asians who went to work in Japan illegally). As the story is an obituary, characters die, but there’s a much bigger story the writer aims to tell – that of big time crooks, such as businessmen, politicians, and officials who drove Thailand’s economy to its crash in 1997. The title story of Algie’s collection of “thrilling tales,” The Phantom Lover is, indeed, a thrilling tale of an abortion gone terribly wrong. ‘Golden children,’ 15th-century adulteresses, aborted fetuses, and black magicians are just a few of the chills the readers get to experience. Life and Death Sentences is a story inspired by and written for the memory of Chaovaret Jaruboon, also known as ‘Thailand’s last executioner.’ He died in 2012, but for Jim Algie, he was “a gentleman, a rock’n’roller, a drinking buddy.” There are many life lessons to be learned from this story.

The Vicious Little Monk is a story of White Fang, a cat with buckteeth, who builds a special relationship with his new ‘master,’ a recently divorced man. But, just as the wife had left the man, hoping for a less-depressing environment and a fresh start, the man abandons the cat and leaves Thailand for Hong Kong. Tsunami, a more than 100-page-long novella, ends Algie’s collection of thrilling stories by bringing together many of the book’s characters. The piece is especially relevant and rather poignant because, during this year, we will mark the tenth anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004. “On any level, personal or spiritual, scientific or philosophical, it’s difficult, if not impossible, to sum up the complexity and farreaching ramifications of a catastrophe that stole or damaged so many lives, and whose shocks were felt as far as Somalia and Alaska.” The Phantom Lover and Other Thrilling Tales of Thailand by Jim Algie is an excellent collection of stories that puts into context the mentality and socio-economic status of the people of Thailand, with their entrenched belief in Buddhist karma and the strong desire to succeed but save face at the same time. In Thailand, the book is available countrywide at most Asia Books and Kinokuniya branches in Bangkok and is also available in Kindle or print from Amazon.
