Samut Songkhram lies slightly more than hour from Bangkok, yet this sleepy province is often overlooked by weekend warriors who head down to overcrowded Ko Samet or Hua Hin. While there is no real beach nor sea swimming to speak of here, the province is home to a wealth of unique attractions which make it worth a visit. In addition to the well-known Amphawa Floating Market, other interesting spots include the â&#x20AC;&#x153;temple in a treeâ&#x20AC;? at Wat Bang Kung, the bizarre Railway Market at Mae Klong, and the salt flats where farmers harvest sea salt.

Most folks have spent at least one weekend at Amphawa, the floating market darling and far better alternative to Damnoen Saduak. While the market, which takes place Friday to Sunday, is very touristy (at least in terms of Thai tourists), it does offer some great seafood at fair prices, and plenty of artsy shopping. If you are looking to get off the beaten path and see something a bit more unique and less crowded, the nearby weekend market at Bang Noi is far more interesting. If you go early enough, you will be the only one around, save for locals stocking up on veggies from the real deal boat vendors. Another stopover along the water worth some time is at the salt flats. Sea water from the Gulf of Thailand is set into ponds, and the ensuing brine created when the water evaporates is then crystallised and turned into salt, which is then hung on poles to dry. If you pass through here after the rainy season, when the salt starts to be harvested, it is a rather bizarre sight to see large triangles of gleaming white seemingly floating above the water. Should you want to take some home, the farmers sell bags of fresh salt all along the roadside here. Samut Songkhram is home to some pretty unique attractions, the most interesting probably being the Mae Klong Railway Market, also known as the Umbrella Market, due to the vendors needing to collapse their market stall parasols so the train can make it through. The Mae Klong Railway was built

to transport goods from the provincial fishing port into Bangkok and later became a passenger line. The local trains that run through here are very slow, which is a good thing, as when the trains pass through tiny Mae Klong, there is almost no space for them to pass through the local market, which sells seafood, clothing and other goods. Right on schedule (trains come through here around four times a day), the train gives a large whistle and signal blast, slowly comes out of the station, and almost immediately slots through the tracks lined with umbrella stalls in front of it.

The stall owners know the routine well here, almost so well that they seem to have things choreographed. The awnings drop - they are all on poles with wheels, which makes for some quick action - and umbrellas fold down almost like dominoes falling, from nearest to furthest, with the further ones going down seemingly just seconds before the train passes through. Standing by the tracks is not for the fainthearted, as the train allows only millimetres of breathing space, although locals are quick to drag over-eager camera toting tourists back to safety. While visitors get a real kick out of this quirky market, the locals seem pretty nonplussed, which isn't surprising given this market has been in existence, with daily passing trains, since 1905. Another bizarre spot in Samut Songkhram is the temple of Wat Bang Kung, more popularly known as “the temple in the tree”. More befitting a place in Angkor Wat’s Angkor Thom jungle temple, the ubosoth or prayer chapel at this otherwise nondescript temple is completely surrounded by the roots of a banyan tree, and barely recognisable. Inside the prayer room here is a golden Buddha, illuminated by candles, but the real attraction here is viewing the small chapel from the outside, where the roots and vines have completely taken over the temple. There are several other notable buildings and battle scene recreations here as well, as this was the holding camp of King Taksin, when he fought against Burmese invaders in the mid 1700s. Other notable spots worth a detour for here are the immense King Rama II Park, which has beautiful teak buildings, a museum, bicycles for hire, and plenty of greenery, and the memorial statue to Chang and Eng, Samut Songhkram’s most famous residents, the Siamese twins joined at the waist that made Thailand famous world over. ››› Go: The easiest way to get to Samut Songkhram is via public minivan from Victory Monument. Vans go to both Amphawa and to the Mae Klong market hourly. You can also take the slow train over to the market via a series of trains that start from the Wongwian Yai station over in Thonburi.

“Although selling wallets via Facebook was relatively good business, I had to find a better additional source of income,” Jack says when asked about how he had started his wooden framed sunglasses business venture. As a freelance advertising executive and with companies shrinking their traditional advertising budgets year by year, Ekasak Chuenchob realised he had to find other means of income in order to financially secure his future. “I love sunglasses. I wear sunglasses everywhere. I have over twenty pairs of sunglasses from very expensive ones to very cheap ones, including vintage designs and modern designs,” he says. “So, why not try to make my own?” Jack plays golf regularly and he is also a competing archer in the Thailand tournament circuit. He thus understands perfectly well the importance of hard training, passion, dedication and devotion. “If you love something, you’ll do all you can in order to succeed. You must believe in yourself,” Jack says when, in reference to the difficulties he encountered while making the first pair of wooden framed sunglasses.

Since then, he has hand-made over 150 pairs of sunglasses and has invested a large amount of money in the equipment needed to cut the wood, curve the frames of the sunglasses and engrave his brand on the side. He experienced with various lens types until he had eventually discovered the right plastic to match the chosen wood and was then able to make it durable enough to survive everyday handling without breaking. Once he had created a few pairs of sunglasses with which he was very happy with, it was then the time for him to sell his product. “My first customers were friends and acquaintances who found out about my work via Facebook,” he says. “Then people started talking about Jackagee, my brand, and sales picked up.” Jack is now working hard on promoting his brand and he even thinks of expanding further into the Japanese market where such products are highly valued.

“I gave myself a timeframe of one year and a half to learn the ins-and-outs of the production process,” he says. “I reached my goal two months earlier. My first teacher was Google and my second teacher was YouTube.”

EARTH PLANS NEXT STEP INTO POP STRATOSPHERE If you’ve been out on a weeknight around any of Bangkok’s many live music venues over the past few years, there is little chance you will have missed the irrepressible Earthcollide Erathem. The blonde rock singer has long been turning heads with her gutsy rock voice and disarmingly honest comments at the mike. But now the time has come for Earthcollide to take the next leap into the pop stratosphere as she wraps up the final production on her planned debut album. Earth has been writing songs with Australian rock star Marie Wilson who scored a top ten hit there with ‘Next Time’ a few years back. Wilson took on Earth as a protege a few years back inviting her to support her on an Austral

ian tour and at a major concert at the Singapore Grand Prix. Now the Australian connection is paying off for Earth, with two producers there, Sam McNally and Michale Vidale, developing her album which will feature a collaboration with Don Walker, the songwriter and keyboardist behind seminal Aussie rock band Cold Chisel. The impending global release of her album is a big step for a singer who admits she never formally learned English at school and indeed adopted her chosen musical language simply by learning lyrics and phrasings from rock songs. “While we recorded all the songs in Thailand they are being mixed and produced in Australia.

And although it’s an English language pop rock album I want to inspire people about my story as a Thai who grew up in Thailand and learned English by myself and through music,” she said. “I want my story to inspire others. “At the moment we are still working on the marketing and distribution plan but I definitely plan to start touring the album in Australia and then tour it all over Asia.” In the meantime, Earth continues to grace the stages of local venues such as Bangkok Betty, Nest and Stumble Inn. According to Earth, she draws from a set of a quite incredible 600 songs but “to be honest, I have never finished the whole album of anyone and I don’t really have any specific music which I really like!”

NO POLITICS IS NO PROBLEM FOR NEW COMEDY CLUB A country under a military government and pervasive censorship aimed at keeping the peace and preserving morality might not seem the ideal environment for risque stand-up comedy. But that hasn’t deterred comedians Chris Wegoda and Drew McCreadie from launching what they describe as Bangkok’s first dedicated English language comedy club. “We respect the political situation of Thailand, and understand that we are living in a unique culture. As such there are a plethora of other subjects we can touch upon as comedians and are happy to have a chance to,” Wegoda says. The club, situated above the Royal Oak Pub in Sukhumvit Soi 33/1 launched earlier last month to what the two described as a packed house with over 160 attendees in the refurbished theatre space. “Opening night at The Comedy Club Bangkok was an outstanding success, exceeding everyone’s expectations,” Wegoda says. The Comedy Club Bangkok came about when the three years of open mic nights at The Londoner ended. Looking for a new location Chris joined forces with Drew to create a place that could be a centre for comedy in the city, providing a variety of comedy formats, as well as being a place for workshops.

Currently The Comedy Club Bangkok will be presenting a comedy show every Friday alternating between stand-up and improv on a weekly basis. “The long-term plan is to expand this to two, three, four or eight nights a week,” Wegoda says. The Comedy Club Bangkok will be cultivating local talent by providing not only opportunity for stage time, but by providing workshops in both improv and stand-up comedy.

BACK CATALOGUE GOES HIGH-TECH Irish band U2 recently hit the headlines for offering all iTunes users a free copy of their new album. Not everyone was so enthusiastic with some describing it as the world’s biggest ever act of spam. But Mango Metro reckons Bangkok-based singer Gabriel Lynch has one-upped U2 in the innovation stakes, having eschewed iTunes and compact discs for a more immediate form of digital delivery medium: a USB bracelet worn on the wrist. “I decided to go down the USB road in anticipation of releasing my new record. I have found it increasingly uncommon not least in this part of the world for people to have CD players, or even CD drives in their computers,” Lynch says. “I had also noticed when I played live that people were drawn to bundles of CDs that I would offer. The idea of putting everything I’ve released onto a single USB drive seemed like the best way to introduce new fans to my music, while also giving my existing supporters - who are absolutely awesome - a chance to catch up on the records that they had missed over the years.”

Meanwhile, Lynch - who hails from Australia - has a new album coming. “The format is much more experimental, but at the core is a rock and roll record,” he says. “If some of my old records could be described as “introverted”, then this one is definitely an extrovert. “It’s called All of Us and many of the tracks came from a crowd funding campaign I conducted to raise funds for the album. The people who pledged were promised a copy of the finished record as well as a song which I would write for them and video for YouTube.” Lynch is currently playing at Sunrise in Khao San Rd, Whisgars and Clubhouse in Sukhumvit Soi 23 and Nest Rooftop Lounge above La Fenix Hotel. Futher afield he recently toured south east Asia. “One of the more memorable highlights was documented on YouTube when, in somewhat of a state and completely naked, I decided to serenade two Filipina hotel receptionists at 3am,” he says. “By contrast, performing at a library in Singapore was merely an interesting setting.”

The club will also be bringing in international performers on a regular basis to compliment the local scene. The two also hope to make Bangkok part of the international circuit. “Comedy is definitely growing, but Bangkok has some catching up to do,” says McCreadie. “A city the size of Bangkok deserves its own comedy club. If things go well, The Comedy Club Bangkok could end up being a destination of choice for comedians doing tours through the area.”

BENJARONG When the Dusit Thani Bangkok relaunched their flagship Benjarong restaurant earlier this year, they made the conscious decision to embrace a more contemporary approach to Thai food. They made the bold move of bringing in Chef Morten Bojstrup Nielsen, who previously worked at Nahm in London and Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin in Bangkok, and had compiled an impeccable pedigree in modern cuisine. And, certainly, his new menu at Benjarong departs from the previous, more traditional incarnation, although the link to Thai food heritage remains well and truly intact. There is never a sense that authenticity has been sacrificed in the name of adventure. Nielsen’s concept is perfectly executed in the smaller dishes. The yam neau is a salad of grilled Wagyu beef with dehydrated tomato, sweet melon and yam pudding. The decision to use superior products and then add some interesting but well-judged substitutions is a hallmark of this so-called ‘modern authenticity’. The pork meatballs (pad prik king moo pun) come seasoned with wild ginger in a red curry sauce and deliver all that tongue-tingling intensity that’s to be expected from Thai food.

There’s also a goong satay with prawns, a side of marinated cauliflower and cucumber. In a nod to Nielsen’s modern approach, these flavours have also been reduced to emulsions that serve as dipping sauces for the prawn. “We are now in a stage where it’s OK to do something modern with Thai food as long as we don’t say that it’s traditional Thai food,” Nielsen says.

The pan-fried red mullet (pla sai daeng tod kub yum tua pou) has a milder flavour but is prepared with a beautifully crispy golden skin, and comes atop a bed of winged beans with a sweet and sour seasoning.

“We have to be open about it – it’s my way of doing it. It’s based and inspired by Thai food. It’s not traditional but we’re using Thai flavours, I call it modern Thai. I think people are ready, as long as we’re open about it.”

There’s a deconstructed tom yung koong, which is served as separate components before being combined at the table. This adapted presentation is designed to help diners think differently about Thai cuisine.

There are few neighbourhoods boasting the sheer variety of Sukhumvit Soi 31 these days and one of the latest arrivals, Peppina, has added another string to the area’s bow. This dedicated pizzeria spin-off from Appia occupies a gorgeously renovated space, with vaulted ceilings and perfectly judged decor that creates a ‘modern rustic’ vibe. It’s cool and cosy at the same time – not as easy balance to strike. It’s been packed since opening nearly a month ago and there’s one obvious reason for this: their pizzas are absolutely top-drawer. They’re as authentic as they come in Bangkok – even the oven, which occupies pride of place in the open kitchen, has been imported from Napoli. The dough is light and airy and there’s an emphasis on uncomplicated, high-quality toppings. There’s a rotating list of daily specials but there are a couple of favourites that have quickly become staples. For example, The Duke combines robiola cheese, balsamic, onion, Italian sausage, roasted cherry tomato and tarragon. Or the Contadina, with zucchini, red pepper, eggplant, pecorino, mozzarella, and a tapenade of caper, olives and white anchovies.

The pizzas are undoubtedly the main attraction here but there are other dishes from outside this purview that add an extra dimension. Start with a serve of sautéed black mussels with white wine sauce or a linguini with ox tongue. Then, moving on to the grill, be sure to try the spicy baby chicken or the grilled pak chong lamb saddle. There are enough options here for a grand Italian banquet.

GOSSIP Gossip in Thong Lor is another classy cocktail venue at the forefront of Bangkok’s growing appreciation for cocktail culture. And, while this shift was driven by expats for many years, it’s an entirely Thai cocktail staff at this place.

Since opening Paste in the backstreets of Thong Lor early last year, Jason Bailey has quickly established a reputation for serving up some of Bangkok’s most considered, innovative Thai food. Working alongside his wife and sous chef Bongkoch ‘Bee’ Satongun, Bailey has created a menu with an ‘aristocratic touch’, calling back to an era of Thai food when it was at its most refined but also its most adventurous. To achieve that, old Thai cookbooks have been scoured for inspiration, with menus then adapted for the modern palate. “Modern Asian cuisine lost its way for a while and that’s where fusion emerged, like a teenager with pimples,” Bailey says. “We’re now reaching maturity and a new level of refinement. “Bangkok’s food scene is exciting because it leads the world in high-level Thai food and Thais are supporting that. They’re opening their arms to that and, in response, the chefs are well-researched in their approach.” Bailey’s menu includes a long list of highlights. Among the starters, there’s the roasted duck salad with lychee, Vietnamese mint and lemon basil, finished beautifully with a hint of banana blossom. There’s also the pork belly bun served with sawtooth coriander, chilli jam and fennel powder. Throughout, Bailey takes identifiably Thai flavours and adapts them, heightening the taste to achieve greater depth and complexity.

“Good Thai cooking produces a series of paradoxical tastes, not just several tastes smashed into an unidentifiable whole,” says Bailey, whose approach emphasises freshness and complexity. “In each mouthful, you want a symphony pinging off on your palate” Bailey is fascinated with Thai food heritage and is determined to find new ways to present beloved Thai staples that, he believes, have fallen out of fashion. For example, nahm priks, the thick relishes that form the bedrock of Thai cuisine, show up on Paste’s menu as sauces rather than as shared dips. Alongside a mud crab served with roe and

pickled mushrooms, there’s a nahm prik gapi base. IRREGULAR MENSTRUATION: A warning sign that should not be ignored Statistics show that the leading cause of death among women is cancer, such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. However, the latest medical technologies and innovations can reduce cancer-related fatalities among women if the warning signs are observed and the risks are managed in time. Dr Wisit Supakarapongkul, a gynecologist at the Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Center at Bumrungrad International Hospital and President of the Thai Gynecologic Cancer Society, shares his advice on this important issue that no woman should overlook.

Common diseases in women The four most common cancers that affect women are breast cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial or uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. Although breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer, the mortality rate is lower than that of cervical cancer. While cervical cancer can be prevented, the problem is that people are not aware of this problem, and seeing a gynecologist is embarrassing and uncomfortable. However, when a woman discovers a lump in her breast, she will worry and see a doctor immediately. In the same way, a pelvic examination should also be performed regularly to check for cervical cancer and uterine cancer. Unfortunately, most women ignore this risk. This attitude should be changed because it is important to prevent or manage cancer of the cervix or uterus, just as with all other cancers.

The risks of cervical cancer

Although the exact cause of uterine cancer is unknown, it is not caused by an infection. However, uterine cancer does have several risk factors, and in some cases, it is associated with hormones in the female body.

Most women mistakenly believe that cervical cancer is the only form of cancer which can develop in the female reproductive system. Cervical cancer can be screened by a Pap smear or HPV test and prevented by vaccines. However, it is just one of the cancers that can affect the female reproductive system. Endometrial or uterine cancer occurs frequently and is the second most common cancer in women. In contrast, incidences of cervical cancer are actually declining, especially in the United States and Europe, because the people there are well-informed, understand this cancer, and are more likely to undergo screening. Another common misconception is that uterine cancer and cervical cancer are the same. They are in fact quite different and occur in different parts of the body. Many women also mistakenly

Uterine cancer may occur in women who have few or no children; women who experience lengthy menstruation spans or hormonal fluctuations, such as irregular menstruation and irregular ovulation; women who have high blood pressure; women who have diabetes; and women who are overweight. These conditions will increase the risk factors for uterine cancer. believe that a pelvic examination for cervical cancer is effective in screening for cancer in all parts of the reproductive system, when it is in fact only one part of what should be a more thorough examination.

Patients with uterine cancer are divided into two groups, each with their own characteristics. The first group is women aged between 35-50 years with certain risk factors, such as being overweight, having high blood pressure and having diabetes.

However, younger women may also develop uterine cancer. The second group is all women aged over 50 years because women in this age group may have irregular periods and think that they have reached menopause or that the irregular periods are a sign of menopause. However, they should not ignore these warning signs because irregular periods are also symptoms of endometrial or uterine cancer. This does not mean that all women having irregular periods will develop uterine cancer, but if you experience this symptom, you should see a gynecologist so that the cause of the abnormality can be determined.

Earlier detection ensures more effective treatment There is no method of screening specifically for uterine cancer. However, with the latest medical technologies, a small sample of the endometrium can be obtained using a suction method during cervical cancer screening so as to screen for uterine cancer as well. At Bumrungrad Hospital, when a gynecologist sees that a patient is having abnormal periods, regardless of their age or risk factors, the doctor will first perform an ultrasound to look for any abnormalities. If any abnormalities are found or if there are any doubts, a sample of endometrium will be obtained using a small suction tube. The patient will experience a mild degree of discomfort from this method but will be able to go home shortly afterwards. Another option which is more specific is to insert a tiny camera through the cervix into the womb to look for a tumor or cancerous growth. In some cases, this will be performed under a general anesthesia. This technique is effective in diagnosing diseases accurately and the result can be obtained within just 15 minutes. Traditionally, a sample of the lining of the uterus is scraped off using the curette and the sample is then sent for testing. This is a blind technique and the results are not always accurate because even though the tissue which is scraped off may not be cancerous, the cancer may be present in a different part of the uterus and remain undetected. Once found, a cancer can be treated by a normal surgical procedure without any problems if it is detected at its early stage. Laparoscopic surgery is the widely accepted standard procedure due to its minimally invasive surgery technique which entails a smaller incision, less pain, and shorter recovery time. Surgery for early stage endometrial or uterine cancer is easier than for cervical cancer and the cure rate is as high as 90 percent. In a medical institute where a multidisciplinary team of doctors with expertise in various fields work closely

together, complicated diseases can be managed as a one stop service, saving time for patients and ensuring that they receive rapid and effective treatment. For the reasons I have mentioned here, I would like to emphasise that no matter what age you are, if you have abnormal periods – such as prolonged bleeding for more than 7 days, heavy bleeding and blood clotting, spotting, intermittent bleeding, or bleeding after menopause – don’t ignore the warning signs, don’t be embarrassed, and don’t let it go untreated. It’s always best to see a doctor.

Reduce the risk. Visit your gynecologist once a year. Visiting your gynecologist once a year will reduce the risk of developing gynecological cancer or letting it develop untreated. Women should also consult their doctor any time they experience abnormal leucorrhea (white-yellow creamy vaginal discharge), abnormal bleeding, strong vaginal odor, pelvic pain, pain during menstruation, or suspected pelvic mass or fluid.
