The craft beer craze sweeping Bangkok continues to rise at an astounding rate, with the home-brewed IPAs, stouts, and other concoctions coming as fast as the rise of food trucks, usually found right outside the beer venues, and it is no longer just a few foreigners bringing good beer to the masses, but a homegrown Thai movement that is also fuelling the charge. It all started not too many years ago, with a few Belgian beer pubs around town serving up pints that tasted just slightly better than your average Chang. Then along came Brew Beer and Ciders, with its large collection of different bottles from around the globe. But things didn’t get too serious until the arrival of Beervana. Aaron Grieser, a lawyer based in

Bangkok, grew up in Oregon drinking craft beer, and when he met Brian Bartusch, another American micro-beer lover who was doing a Le Cordon Bleu high-end cuisine program in Bangkok, the two decided to do something about bringing their passion for beer to the drinking scene here by creating Beervana to distribute craft beer. The pair figured Thailand was ready for some bold new beer tastes, with Grieser saying, “The difference between craft and commercial beers is like the difference between listening to your favorite band on your iPhone and standing front row at their concert. There’s just a much broader spectrum of flavor.” He added that craft beer would fill the niche between “stupid beer and smart wine,”

and lo and behold, it has come to pass. While Beervana specializes in distributing top American micro beers (plus a small selection of other notables that include Japanese and Norwegian brews) like Rogue and Deschutes, other players have filled up every other niche of the beer market. Mikkeller, a gypsy brewer with origins in Denmark and a bar in Copenhagen and San Francisco, opened their third establishment here, all of the sudden making Bangkok a destination city for drinking hard-to-find craft beers. Mikkeller serves up very high-end avant garde brews (try a pint of their Vanilla Shake Imperial Stout, which tastes like a fine coffee with Belgian chocolate), has 30 rotating taps, and is located in a very out-of-the-way spot

in the sales office of The Lofts condominium on Sukhumvit, just past the Ekamai skytrain station. It’s a homey spot that resembles an industrial style New York cafe, with a wall filled with hundreds of hard-to-find beers, plus a rotating tap selection of eight excellent craft beers. As Le Louer comments, “Supermarkets still only stock less than 20% of the 500 beers we have on the shelf, so we offer the best of both worlds, a bar where you can relax over some hard-to-find beers, plus take a few bottles you’ve been searching for home.” Wishbeer plans to move to a new location come the end of the year, so keep an eye on their Facebook page.

in the back alleys of Ekamai. This, plus their ultra high prices, ensures that you’ve got to be serious about your beer drinking to make the pilgrimage there. Focusing on another segment of the beerloving population, Wishbeer is an online beer delivery service and now a bar. Started by Frenchman Jérôme Le Louer, who, with a group of friends, lamented the lack of being able to obtain his favorite Belgian beers in Bangkok and, thus, started up his own small operation. He has seen the outfit grow to stocking over 500 beers and ciders from around the world, and they pretty much stock any beer that one can find in Thailand, all conveniently located in one spot. Perhaps even more interesting than all these foreign imports is what has happened on the local Thai craft beer front. As everyone knows, it is still illegal to make one’s own beer in Thailand, although the fines are petty compared to trying to sell that beer, which technically carries jail terms for offenders. Yet just like other supposed “illegals” in Thailand, theory and reality don’t always go hand in hand, and it seems that the powers that be have far more pressing things to do these days than to go around making life miserable for a bunch of “hopsheads”. Wichit “Chit” Saiklao runs the Chit Beer Bar and Brewery out on Koh Kret isle. It’s a chilled-out little spot on the banks of the Chao Phraya, where customers walking in are usually treated to the sight of Chit stirring hops in a big vat, watching over refrigerators full of batches of beer made by students in their homebrewing classes. Chit has been busted before, but the officers who fined him evidently enjoyed a few pints and told him he should keep brewing! Chit doesn’t seem too scared of the long arm of the law, nor do some of the other local brewers that have started to rise to fame, like

Sandport, a group of friends who have started to share their local batches at art spaces and indie music venues. The same goes for Golden Coins and Udomsuk, whose IPA bottles sell out quickly at outdoor farmer’s and flea markets. Recently, Whiteline bar and art gallery on Silom hosted several “Brewtopia” events, attended by hundreds of partygoers, which spilled out into the streets. Not only was every local brewer in attendance pouring illegal homemade suds, but the venue was less than 300 meters from a university to boot, and yet nobody seemed to care. Some of the local craft beer gets a mixed response from the beer community. It is still in its early stages, so the batches of beer are not uniformly even, nor always good. As one brew-lover said to me, “In the U.S., you have to brew for years to get something good enough that can be sold to the public, you don’t go about selling your initial experiments.” Others talk about the fact that not only are they breaking the homebrewing laws, but of far more significance, they aren’t paying taxes, which ironically is most likely all the more reason why the industry will eventually have to become legalized. Yet another drinker told me that it’s all for a good cause, the celebration of fine beer alternatives. Besides, he added, “these renegade brewers are engaging in a form of rebellion or protest, which isn’t something we see too often around here.”

Rugby Sevens 2015 Kicks off

The Bangkok International Rugby Sevens are extremely pleased to announce that, in its 21st year, the tournament will be located at the Bangkok Patana School in Bang Na on November 7 and 8.

The tournament will have four divisions of International Men’s, International Women’s, Social Sevens, and Youth Under 18. Interest is high for the tournament, with teams from all over the world expressing interest in coming to Bangkok, including previous champions Grammar TEC from Auckland, New Zealand and Pacific Warriors from Wellington, New Zealand in the Men’s, and champions Singapore Stellar from Singapore. Referees include internationals and the very best of Thai referees. Supporting women’s rugby development in Asia, the Bangkok International Rugby Sevens Tournament is sponsoring teams from Laos and Cambodia to attend. All teams attending are bringing extra training kit including boots to donate to these two teams. The Bangkok International Rugby Sevens Tournament will also be hosting a coaching clinic run by Lote Raikabula, former All Blacks Sevens player, and a rugby-specific strapping run by Emma Clarke, former Wellington NPC team Physio on Friday the 6th of November.

The Bangkok International Rugby Sevens Tournament is run by the Thai-based Sports Management Asia Co. Limited, who reinvests in rugby throughout Southeast Asia and is committed to bringing together a premium event of exciting rugby. The rejuvenated Bangkok International Rugby Sevens Tournament has grown every year, and this year’s has sixteen international men’s teams, twelve international women’s teams, and eight Asia/social grade teams, and a new youth grade of eight teams competing. International referees fly in from around the world to adjudicate alongside Thai referees at the Bangkok International Rugby Sevens Tournament. MANGO NIGHTS Bangkok’s Newest Beach

Bangkok is approximately eighty five kilometers from the nearest beach. Bangkok is also sinking a few centimeters every year, which suggests that in a few decades or so that beachfront may get awfully closer. But who can wait? Ceto Geray certainly can’t. A principal of the famous Space Club in the Spanish island of Ibiza between 1996 and 2008, he has just launched an international beach club deep in the heart of Khao San Road! Geray’s Thailand story began in 2008 when he re-recreated the Ibiza vibe of Space at Koh Samui. He sold out three years later and returned to his native Europe. “I travelled Europe for eight months and stopped over at many countries, big cities, and islands. At this time, I saw huge successes with the open-air city beach club concept… there was a big potential, and I saw so many happy faces, all of them enjoying the time and dine, drink, and dance under the stars.” Returning to Thailand in 2012, he hunted around the nation’s many resort islands looking for a location where he could open such a beach club. But he couldn’t find a suitable venue until, by chance, he met a lady on the dance floor at Kolour Sundays, Yindee, who worked as

a manager for the Buddy Group, which operates several venues in Khao San. Eventually he shared his vision with her, and she alerted him to a property owned by her employer in the Khao San area.

The Loneliest Beast Pure techno is a rare beast in Bangkok’s nightlife scene. So it is fitting that a new collaboration between two of Bangkok’s most dedicated techno DJs – Felix Moreno and Anders Svensson – should be termed 52 Hertz, after the world’s loneliest whale. “Most whales communicate using sonic signals between 10-30Hz,” Svensson states. “However, there is this one old whale that has been swimming around the oceans whose signals, for some reason, are transmitted on exactly 52Hz. Nobody knows why, but this means that no other whale can hear his attempts to communicate, and he has been dubbed as the ‘world’s loneliest whale’. I saw a connection there with us trying to push non-mainstream underground music that nobody else is promoting in Thailand.” Beginning earlier this year, Svensson says the 52Hz events have received a strong positive response from the Bangkok audience. “Our experience has been overwhelmingly positive. We have a range of different monthly events we do at various venues across Bangkok, and we are lucky to have a core of supporters that come to pretty much all the events we do.” “Berlin Beats is our most popular event taking place monthly at Glow Club; it’s the longest running techno event there and has built up quite a following. Also the launch of our monthly Red Zone house events at Black Pagoda in Patpong was very exciting and this event has grown into something very special. Other than that, the event I probably enjoy to play the most personally is an event I do monthly with Masa Niway-

ama called Cosmication. It’s at a small well-hidden Japanese venue called 12x12 and has an ‘anything goes’ type attitude. It’s a chance for me to get really experimental and play tracks I could not play anywhere else in Bangkok. Also The System at Dark Bar is another special event where I get to play full-on uncompromised techno all night, something not heard often elsewhere in Thailand.” Interestingly, Svensson has something in common with other DJs – he grew up more as a rockhead listening to the likes of Guns N’ Roses and Rage Against The Machine. But a stint as a DJ at Ohio State University’s college radio station saw him take trips with friends up to Detroit in the neighboring state of Michigan – where he discovered Detroit techno. “I guess looking back it’s quite easy to find a resemblance between the heavy percussion driven rock I was into growing up, the raw beats of the early ’90s hip-hop, and finally, the electronic drums of techno. The journey was complete, and I haven’t looked back since.”

As far as the Bangkok techno scene is concerned, Svensson has mixed views. “The Bangkok techno scene is tiny if you refer to proper techno, but there are pockets of people that are really into it, and I’ve seen the scene growing stronger and stronger since I arrived here six years ago.” “Unfortunately, there is not enough collaboration between local Thais and foreigners here. Many foreigners that come over here organizing events completely disregarding the locals and do it only to make money as opposed to having any interest in pushing the Bangkok scene forward.” “Techno is meant for dark unpretentious venues with a good sound system, and unfortunately, Bangkok falls short of venues like that. Gourmet burgers and other gimmicks really have no place anywhere near a techno event, and the amount of people that abuse and trying to capitalize on the word techno in Bangkok is out of control. Many organizers and DJs claim they play techno here, but in fact, what they play is not techno at all, and I doubt they have even heard real techno in their lives.”

With so many new Mexican restaurants (still) opening around Bangkok, we decided it was time to head back to the notso-new yet resurrected kid on the block – Coyote Mexican Bar and Grill. Coyote Sukhumvit closed for a year or more but has reopened its doors in the prime Bangkok dining and nightlife spot of Sukhumvit 11. The place maintains its traditional branding, all the things we have become used to – the terracotta walls, wooden tables, sombreros, and, of course, the friendly wait staff in denim. We were invited to the grand re-opening night in February of this year, and while we only got lots of small bites of various dishes, I remember the chicken wings being sensational, and was told by my friends the beef mini-fajita was oh-soyummy. The one thing that stood out most on opening night was, despite the busy and packed restaurant, the service was excellent – fast and always with a smile from the friendly team. Over the months, we have headed back for drinks, but only recently managed to go back for a meal. The menu is extensive:

nachos, soups, salads, and traditional Mexican favorites like soft tacos, quesadillas, burritos, chimichangas, and the sizzling fajitas. We started our meal with the signature Coyota Nachos – tortilla chips topped with shredded grilled chicken, diced chorizo, melted cheese, black beans, jalapenos, black olives, sour cream, pico de gallo, and guacamole. The serving is huge and is easily a meal in itself. I love

the combination of chorizo and chicken topping that works so well with the guacamole. For our next course, we ordered the pork baby back ribs to share, and, just for the name alone, I had to try the Wings of Fire. The ribs were delicious, cooked to perfection, with meat falling off the bones. The chicken wings did not disappoint and were still as good as I had remembered, if not better! It comes with a choice of te-

quila honey or blue cheese dip. For the mains, my companion ordered the big burrito with grilled steak. The portion was huge, with flour tortilla wrapped around the steak and cheese and refried beans, topped with guacamole and sour cream. This came with sides of red salsa, black beans, and Mexican rice. I ordered the chicken fajitas, served on a hot skillet, with plenty of guacamole, sour cream, and cheese. The fajitas are also available with snapper and salmon, a nice non-red meat option. I went for the con-

ventional chicken option and was not disappointed. My only complaint is I ordered way too much food! The tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and fajitas are also available in vegetarian option for the non-meat eaters amongst us. All the food arrived with little waiting time, served piping hot, fresh, and tasty… and with a smile. It would be remiss to visit Coyote and not try one of the margaritas. Coyote probably has the biggest selection of margaritas

in Bangkok, possibly in Thailand? There are about 75 different blends, so you will sure find something that suits your fancy whether you are an aficionado or a firsttimer. I recommend the Cajun – a chili-infused tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and a dash of tabasco; the Mafia – Tequila, triple sec, amaretto and lime juice; and why not try the Caribbean – Tequila, triple sec, light rum, pineapple and lime juice. There were numerous others that sounded very appealing, but we may have to save that for the next 70 or so visits to try them all! Or you could try a few and write to us about your favorite ones!

Learn how to identify and prepare some of the popular varieties so that you and your family can enjoy and benefit from their healthy nutrients. Thai vegetables are served a variety of ways. Some are eaten raw and are presented as salads, served alongside soups, or paired with dipping sauces. Others are boiled, deep-fried or stir-fried, grilled, or steamed and accompany meat dishes and rice or noodles. Vegetables come in different shapes and sizes and many have edible leaves, stems, seeds, and roots, too.

Yardlong bean Similar in look and taste as a green bean, its texture is more firm and crisp, and its pods measure well over 30cm long. Yardlong beans are often found in stir-fries and soups but are also eaten raw with spicy dipping sauces. This type of bean (legume) has a generous amount of both soluble and insoluble fiber, which is key for a healthy digestion tract. It also is an excellent source of Vitamin A that helps maintain healthy skin and mucous membranes. 100 grams of yardlong beans contain just 47 calories.

Water spinach Most popularly served stir-fried with oyster sauce and garlic, this aquatic or semiaquatic green vegetable is grown in local rivers before being harvested. It has slender hollow stems and dark leafy green leaves that are pointed and narrow. Its flavor is similar to spinach and can easily be found in Thai markets. Water spinach, also referred to as swamp cabbage, is rich in antioxidants and iron. It

has detoxifying enzymes that have been used as treatment against liver problems. The tender shoots and leaves are eaten together and contain a mere 19 calories per 100 grams.

Lotus root Once this underwater reddish brown root is peeled, it reveals a whitish crunchy flesh similar in flavor to young coconuts or chestnuts. A cross-section cut of the root will reveal an interesting geometric set of holes in its interior that is similar to lace. It is available dried or canned and is often used in desserts. The seeds and stem of the lotus plant are regularly used in Thai cuisine, too. Lotus root is composed of slow digesting complex carbohydrates and contains healthy amounts of minerals such as potassium, copper, and iron. Its juice is easily digestible and easy on the stomach and therefore is often

used to treat constipation or diarrhea. Once peeled, 100 grams of lotus root has 72 calories.

Taro This root is a good source of starch and can be eaten in the same manner as potatoes: steamed, boiled, or even sliced and fried as crisps. It is surrounded by a brown fibrous skin that must first be peeled or cut away. Its white or creamy interior flesh is spotted with visually appealing purple pigmentation and is popularly used in desserts. Taro contains gluten-free protein and is rich in fiber. It is calorically dense and contains 142 calories for every 100 grams of peeled root.

Many minor cuts and bruises can be treated at home with proper care. For injuries such as cuts or scrapes that break the skin, wash the affected area with mild soap and water, gently pat it dry, and then apply ointment and a band-aid or plaster. More serious cuts may require a doctor’s assistance and possibly stitches as well as a tetanus shot. Additionally, if an item is deeply lodged in the infant’s skin, do not remove it and instead seek medical care immediately. Seek professional medical assistance if the cut or scrape becomes infected or if your child develops a fever. Bruises, the red or purple marks under the skin’s surface due to broken blood vessels, can be treated by gently applying a cold compress to the skin. This will slightly numb the area and decrease both pain and swelling. Ideally, use a small

Some babies experience long-lasting periods of crying that are generally attributed to colic. Often parents believe this is due to stomach pain but there is not much known about what really causes colic. Doctors agree that otherwise healthy newborns will outgrow their finicky symptoms by 3 or 4 months of age. The baby may show constant irritability by excessive fussiness, pulling up their knees to their stomach, and passing gas or burping often. Calm rocking, swaddling, encouraging the release of stomach gas with light back patting, or providing a pacifier can provide temporary comfort. If the child shows symptoms of vomiting and/or diarrhea, it may be caused by a viral, bacterial, or parasitical infection. The former may clear up within a few days, but the latter two may require specific drugs to resolve the sickness. The

Newborns up to 3 or 4 months old have a limited ability to regulate their own body temperature. Therefore, do not expose them to too hot or too cold of an environment and dress them appropriately for the surrounding temperature. A good rule of thumb is to dress a baby in one more layer than what you are currently wearing. A thin layer of clothing can be easily added or removed to make your baby comfortable. Babies also lose heat quickly through their head so dress your baby in a hat, particularly when exposed to cold.

If you’ve got a few hours to spare on your next trip to Koh Samet, here are three destinations you won’t regret visiting: Dok Krai Reservoir, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Herbal Garden, and Sunthorn Phu Memorial. Of course, you could also spend the entire day visiting here on a full daytrip to Rayong Province. Dok Krai Reservoir covers a massive area of 1,300 hectares and is located in Pluak Daeng district, 35 kilometers from Rayong City. Apart from its obvious function to store water, the reservoir was also built to educate the public in areas related to agriculture, fishery, and irrigation.

Located 175 kilometers southeast of Bangkok, the province of Rayong is mostly known to travellers as a getaway destination leading to the more famous islands on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Samet being, by far, the most popular one. But there’s more to Rayong than just the bus ride to the pier and then the ferryboat trip to the islands.

After you’ve visited the educational center, it’s time to head for the water and enjoy the scenery and the clean air. A few rows of open-air bungalows built on stilts offer a perfect view of the lake. Depending on the season, there’ll be enough birds in the air to please the weekend birdwatcher, while the breeze coming from the water will help you overcome the heat. This part of the reservoir is usually quiet, so it’s a good idea to have your lunch here. Being in such close proximity to both freshwater and seawater, the choices of dishes mainly revolve around seafood. The deepfried fish (pla thod), fried rice with crab meat (khao pad poo), and glass noodles with various seafood (yam wunsen thale) will fill your stomach and keep you going for the rest of the day. After lunch, you can walk on the wooden plank-way to the shore of the lake and skip pebbles on the surface of the reservoir. Obviously, you can find great spots to take photographs and selfies everywhere! Your next stop is Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Herbal Garden, an even quieter place where you’ll have the chance to walk among thousands of herbal trees of various sizes and learn about Thai herbs. The history of the garden is linked to that of PTT, the state-owned oil and gas giant, who established the first Thai herb garden in 1984.

In 2004, on the occasion of the Princess’s 50th birthday, PTT expanded the garden into a full-fledged research, educational, and recreational center. The sixty rai that encompass the herbs garden are filled with 260 species of medicinal herbs from about 20,000 herbal trees. Well-manicured footpaths flanked by tall trees and a huge water fountain with multiple sprinkles just add to the peaceful atmosphere. The garden is open every day of the week (except Mondays) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the entry fee is from 50 to 150 baht, depending on whether you are a child, a student, or an adult. Your last destination for the day (before you head on to the beach) is Sunthorn Phu Memorial, maybe one of the most recognizable monuments in Thailand. The namesake of the park is that of the Rattanakosin era poet whose most famous work is Phra Aphai Mani, an epic poem that is taught and drilled in every Thai class. The poem includes many elements of Thai folklore (including mermaids and giants) and dwells on the romantic adventures of Phra Aphai Mani in Siam. The memorial park was officially opened in 1970 and has ever since become a pilgrimage site for hundreds of thousands of Thais. It is located on Phra Aphai Mani Road, which literally leads to the seashore, your last stop

for the day. Obviously, you can’t compare the white sand beaches of Koh Samet with the trash-littered beach in Rayong, but if you want to gaze at the vast expanse of the Gulf of Thailand, listen to the waves crash on the shore, and look out in the distance at all sorts of vessels, then the view is as good as any. Being a transportation hub on the eastern seashore, there are many ways to reach Rayong. From Bangkok, buses leave every forty minutes from both Ekamai bus station and Mo Chit bus terminal. The journey takes three hours, and the first bus leaves at 4 a.m., while the last one departs at 10 p.m. Vans also leave regularly from Victory Monument, and many taxis have a standard fare of about 3,000 baht for a one-way trip. If you’re in a rush, you can take a plane from Don Mueang Airport to U-Tapao Airport and be there in less than one hour. If you drive your own car, then just follow the signs on Bang Na-Trat Highway or the motorway to Chonburi.
