The g n i n Run . . . e of th ? ! ? s o l a f Buf
By Dave Stamboulis Pattaya aside, Chonburi Province doesn’t get too much press, other than the occasional coverage of some large cargo arriving in its massive seaport. Yet Bangkok’s quiet neighbor does have one rather quirky and fun festival that is well worth celebrating each year, the Chonburi Buffalo Races, which pay homage to the country’s agricultural beasts of burden. Make no mistake, this is no Pamplona spectacle of Papa Hemingway fame. None of the buffalo get injured, and there aren’t any mojitos for sale in the stands (at least not that I could find). What does go on is a day full of festivities and fun,
where locals let their hair down and the buffaloes get to be the star attraction. The festival’s origins go back over one hundred years and are actually tied in to the Buddhist Lent celebration of Awk Pansaa, the end of the rains retreat period, when the monks finally come out of their self-imposed sequestering in the monasteries during the rainy season. During this time, people give thanks for an abundant wet period, hopefully one that irrigated fertile crops; and of course, the buffalo was a pretty integral part of that, so the locals decided their beasts needed some feting as well.

The Buffalo Races resemble a local temple fair, which, if you are lucky enough to have been to one, are usually marked by plenty of food vendors, shopping stalls, game booths, folk music, and plenty of good-natured folks. All those are present here, with the grounds next to the Chonburi Municipality and provincial offices being chockablock with OTOP products, som tam and gai yang sellers, and game booths. There are also other performances going on, such as youths trying to climb oiled poles in order to snag 500-baht notes placed on top, but the main stars of the event are the buffaloes.
trials to get to the final races, which are worth a good purse to the winning riders and teams.
Farmers bring in throngs of beasts from out of town, with the main event of the day being the 100-meter buffalo dash, er, gallop-cum-plod, when the animals compete for some hefty prize money. The buffaloes can actually get a real burst of speed up once they take off and are headed in a straight direction, and there really are some exciting and epic finishes between several riders. The hardest part of the race seems to be getting the jockey aboard the beast without being thrown and then getting the pair out of the starting blocks facing straight ahead.
This year’s Chonburi Buffalo Races will take place during the first week of October. While the races do often fall right on the designated Awk Pansaa holiday date (October 8th this year), they are officially governed by the lunar calendar and auspicious dates, so it is best to call the Chonburi Municipal Office (038 283 449) or Chonburi TAT (038 427 667) for official information a week or so in advance. While the parades and contests
In addition to the dozens of races that take place, there are also some pretty outlandish events such as the Miss Farmer Beauty Contest, a buffalo beauty pageant, a buffalo costume competition, and even a few men-versus-buffalo strength competition, of which you can guess who always wins. At the start of race day, the buffaloes are all herded together at one end of the stadium, where they receive food, water, and a thorough bathing. This is a popular photo op amongst visitors, but is actually the most dangerous part of the event, as buffalo are large and somewhat unpredictable animals, and they occasionally burst loose amidst the crowd. Once they are nourished, jockeys take them on a couple of warm-up runs, and then the stadium starts building to a feverish pitch, almost like a good football match, as there are a series of
The buffalo has been the subject of reports in the past few years, from how they are slowly becoming extinct in Thai society as motorized tractors and other technology have replaced them in the fields, to how their bodies are used as meat in an expanding carnivore trade. Hopefully, festivals like this can keep the spotlight on the animals and how valuable their contribution has been to society while giving folks a chance to go out and have a fun day at the races as well.
take place over a period of several days, the buffalo racing is only on one day. To get to the event on public transport, take a Chonburi bound bus from the Eastern Bus Station near the BTS Ekkamai station, get off in central Chonburi, and hop a motorcycle taxi the last five minutes to the Provincial Office and stadium. Just say “wing kwai (buffalo running) and everyone will point you in the right direction, then just listen for the hooves and hooting.

Taipei Takeaways SEPTEMBER 2014
By Voicu Mihnea Simandan
If it came to making a general statement about Taiwan, think of the best things that both Japan and China have to offer, and you’ll get a pretty accurate description of what to expect from a trip to Taiwan and its capital city, Taipei.

Taipei 101, which ranked as the tallest building in the world between 2004 and 2010. The tower offers a stunning view of the city and the surrounding green hills, while the adjacent mall and shopping streets are sure to make a huge hole in your purse or wallet! The indoor observation deck is on the 89th floor and the outdoor viewpoint is on the 91st floor, both offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the capital. These three destinations are all within walking distance of their eponymous metro stations. Taking the metro to Xianshan Station, not far from Taipei 101, will give you the chance to explore the forests surrounding the capital. Elephant Mountain is the place to go hiking in Taipei. After just a 20-minute hike on a well-maintained trail of steps, you’ll get a breathtaking view of the city down below with Taipei 101 towering over every temple roof, apartment building, and the traffic-filled streets. The hike isn’t difficult at all, and the frequent rest areas and observation decks, plus the looming shadow of Taiwan’s tallest building, make the trip an excellent reason to climb and enjoy the sunset.
Getting a visa to there, regardless of nationality, isn’t that difficult. All you need is a return-travel ticket, a hotel booking, and possibly proof that you have the financial means to cover your expenses for the period you wish to travel. To get there, a direct flight from Bangkok to Taipei Taoyuan International Airport takes three and a half hours, and on arrival, you’ll need to move your watch one hour ahead. If your hotel doesn’t offer an airport pick-up service, then it’s very easy to just take a public bus or the high-speed train into the capital’s center. As you leave the airport, make sure you stock up on maps, as these will be extremely valuable in your travels around Taiwan. After you’ve checked into your hotel in Taipei, it’s time to explore the city. With a map of the metro in hand, you can reach every single point of interest you want by train. Luckily, all the metro maps have the major tourist attractions clearly marked next to the nearest stations, so, depending on your interests, it’s easy to find your way around. My recommendation would be to explore a little of all the aspects of life that such a cosmopolitan city has to offer: history, religion, shopping, and the outdoors.
If you start at Taipei Main Station, an attraction in itself, you can take the metro to your first stop at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, one of the capital’s landmarks and a must-visit if you’re interested in the history of Taiwan. Chiang Kai-shek (also known as Jiang Jieshi) was an influential political and military leader who became the first president of Taiwan in the late 1940s. You’ll need almost half a day to properly explore the Hall and the surrounding park, so you might want to allocate enough time for this stop. Then you should hop back on the metro and go to Shandao Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in Taipei. Completed in 1926 during the Japanese rule of Formosa (the historic name of Taiwan), the temple gives a good glimpse into the religious life of Taiwanese people, and it’s also a very good example of Buddhist temple architecture. Most temples throughout Taiwan tend to be a replica of Shandao Temple, so if you’re not a big fan of visiting temples, then visiting Shandao will certainly make you feel satisfied that you’ve at least made contact with the quintessential place of Buddhist worship in Taiwan. Temples and history aside, it’s time for shopping and exploring the modern city of Taipei. What better place to start than

Dollars (TWD) while you’re still in Thailand, preferably at Vasa Exchange or Super Rich where you will get a much better deal (the selling rate is currently around 1.075) than at any bank or airport money exchange booth. Go to Taiwan expecting to meet very friendly people, to eat great food, to enjoy an exciting cosmopolitan life, and to see some excellent and breathtaking scenery. You won’t regret the trip – and the memories you’ll bring back will stay with you forever!
People are under the impression that it’s very expensive to travel to most industrialized and highly-developed countries. This isn’t the case with Taiwan. While the standard of living is high, with rent prices reaching up and well beyond US$2,000 per month, being in the country as a tourist doesn’t have to be that expensive. You can find clean 2- or 3-star hotels within walking distance to the metro for the equivalent of 1,500 baht/night, you can eat street food and have a filling dinner for 150 baht, and you can travel using the excellent and cheap public transport system. A return ticket with Thai Airways from Bangkok to Taipei costs approximately 15,000 baht. Just make sure you change your pocket money from Thai baht to New Taiwan

“Piccadilly”
I say “Pickadaily” By Voicu Mihnea Simandan By Voicu Mihnea Simandan Photos byJojit Jojit Pangilinan Photos by Pangilinan
Imagine that Bangkok’s On Nut Road (Sukhumvit 77), connecting downtown with Suvarnabhumi Airport, is London’s Piccadilly Road. If we accept this analogy, then the road should end at Piccadilly Circus, a major road junction and public space in London. However, the route along the On Nut Road doesn’t end with such a circle and actually goes all the way down to Lad Krabang district in the southwestern most part of Bangkok, but you’ll be surprised to find out that even before you reach the bridge crossing over Srinakarin Road, there’s a place called “Pickadaily Bangkok”. Again, it’s not a ‘Circus/Circle’, but rather a fancy community mall that offers a similar experience to Chocolate Ville, the Scandinavian-themed set of restaurants on Nawamin Road in Bangkok, or Palio, the Italian-inspired “village” in Nakhon Ratchasima province. Pickadaily Bangkok is a place that tries, with some success, to reproduce the atmosphere of an old English village mixed with
more modern and kitschy attractions that one might be tempted to have in the background of a holiday photo when in England. Launched at the end of 2013, Pickadaily Bangkok wants to be exactly that: a place where people like to come and take pictures and once there, hopefully, to stay for a drink and a meal and possibly to spend more money in some of the other shops that dot the mall. To a certain extent, Pickadaily Bangkok, a project built and owned by Areeya Property, has succeeded in creating an atmosphere of ‘foreign-ness’ where people, mostly Thais, but also some foreigners, like to go and posing with friends. There are enough opportunities for such instances in front of water fountains, phone booths (with no actual phones!), benches with statues of children reading, French windows, a huge chessboard with a few pieces on it, huge iron bicycles (even including a mock penny-farthing), a small bridge over a ‘pond,’ all amongst plenty of lush green trees.

If you happen to find yourself alone at Pickadaily Bangkok, you can always take some handheld selfies, or, better yet, use the intrend selfie-stick to better capture the background. The buildings imitate a Gregorian architectural style with their notable high, rectangular windows. Actually, from the main street, these buildings look quite impressive, and the big red London doubledecker ‘bus’ at the front feels welcoming to any passer-by. So, on the spur of the moment, you’ve decided to check out this foreign-looking place and step up to the main courtyard. You’re immediately immersed into the above, and right there, in the middle of it all, stands the ‘Statue and Fountain of Eros,’ which does a decent job of imitating the original one in London’s Piccadilly Circus. If it’s a weekend and it’s getting late, then you’re most likely to see a weekend market, which is regularly set up in the courtyard, but if it’s a weekday and especially if it’s daytime, then the place is most likely deserted with just a few groups of graduates or newlyweds taking pictures for their memory albums. Although there are a few booths for vendors to sell their wares, they are regularly empty until the weekend market.
With slight variations, most of the places open late in the morning and close at 10 or 11 p.m., with longer hours on the weekend when there are more customers. In case you run out of cash, there are enough ATMs on each level to support all of your shopping needs (provided there’s money in the account). Since the place is less than a year old, the toilets are clean, and there’s also a designated smoking area, so there’s no real need to sneak a ‘cheeky-one’ in the toilet cubicle. Pickadaily Bangkok has plenty of parking spaces at the front, on the side, and at the back. Even more, there are only a few places in Thailand that have a mechanical parking lot. Actually, you might not even notice it at first, as it is located in a glass and steel clock tower vaguely reminding you of Big Ben (although the real Big Ben in London is actually located on the River Thames in Westminster and not in Piccadilly Circus). However, it must be noted that this vertical parking structure can only hold up to 18 cars, and all have to weigh below a certain weight limit, while a valet parking attendant will park your car and also retrieve it for you. There is also a car wash right at the back, below the first floor.
Pickadaily Bangkok www.pickadailybkk.com Is located between On Nut 37 and 39 off of Sukhumvit 77 (On Nut Road), and the easiest way to get there if you don’t drive your own car is to take the BTS to On Nut station. From there, you can grab a taxi for a 50-baht ride. You can also take the 10-baht air-con bus number 1013 or you can take the more frequent white 7-baht songtaew with the numbers 1, 4 and 7. Alternatively, you can take the Airport Link to Hua Mak Station, however while it’s closer to your destination, you’ll still need to take a taxi for the rest of the three kilometers to Pickadaily Bangkok, as it would be far too complicated to use public transport.

Marketwatch:
Cicada Hua Hin
By Dave Stamboulis
The outdoor retro market has become a mainstay on the Thai shopping scene. While Thai markets have traditionally all been outdoors, as city dwellers became passionate about their air-cons and Chatuchak became hotter than hell, shopping started becoming a mall pastime. Yet with the arrival of markets like the Talad Rot Fai Retro Market or Chiang Mai’s Walking Street night bazaar, it became fun and fashionable to get outdoors again. And fortunately, that trend is continuing with the latest hipster artist mercado, the Cicada Weekend Market in Hua Hin.
Hua Hin does have a night market, but it is mainly food and fairly cheesy tourist trinkets. As the beach town has become a huge favorite on the Bangkokian weekend getaway calendar, and as more foreigners have started to check out its boutique resorts and growing foodie scene, so the need for a fun new nightspot arose. Sasi-ampai Sirivoj, the manager of the Cicada Market, said that there weren’t enough recreational activities at night in Hua Hin to accommodate the growing numbers of visitors and that the market fills a great niche between artisans and the public. Sirivoj says that they
called the market ‘Cicada’ due to the number of insects that frequent the trees in the garden on the market site, but the name also has an acronym – Community of Identity, Culture, Arts, and Dynamic Activity – which is pretty much what the place is all about. Cicada showcases the handicrafts and artistic talents of hundreds of local artisans. Despite it being the rainy season, the night I visited, there were live bands playing on the lawn, painters displaying their work, caricature sketchers drawing tourists and putting their profiles on t-shirts, and plenty of local handicrafts a step above the local trinkets and reproductions
that one tends to find at most night markets. One fellow was selling wooden-framed sunglasses he’d created, another woman was selling fashion clothing she’d sewn, and yet another was painting handmade postcards. The quality of the products here are a step above most of what you’ll find at night bazaars, and the artisans and visitors all seem to be enjoying the opportunity to mingle, share, and engage in a bit of commerce. The market is divided up into four zones, the first of which is the Art à la Mode, where craft vendors can sell and display their accessories,
mango metro
clothing, and other wares. Plenty of university art graduates trying to make a living from their passion are seated here. Nearby, the Cicada Art Factory is a series of small white houses where art exhibitions get rotated, featuring paintings, sculptures, photographs, and other art representative of the community. Another zone is the Amphitheatre, where dance troupes, comedians, storytellers, masked Khon dancers, and other traditional performing artists ply their trades, along with singers, bands, and even ribald comedy routines that are normally found upcountry at fun Isaan fairs. The small Greek style theatre here provides a nice break from the shopping area and from walking. The final zone is the Cicada Cuisine, which is stocked with vendors hawking both Thai and international foods. Given the number of international tourists and discerning Bangkok foodies coming here, the fare is better than your average street market, with stalls dishing out that famous fresh Hua Hin seafood, along with other worldly items like Korean barbecue or Italian pasta.
The market is located on ten rai of nice gardens and feels far less crowded and far more navigable than your average night market, which in both Bangkok and Chiang Mai tends to be hot, sweaty, and a very crowded affair. As the Cicada Market is at the Takiab end of Hua Hin, it means it is away from the city center and dense traffic that stops there, and there is plenty of parking adjacent to all the festivities. There are far more nice quality products here than at your standard night bazaar and far less stalls selling a glut of used items, although there are a few deals to be had. Leather wallets and key chains were popular sellers, as were handcrafted ukuleles. Perhaps even more of a draw, though, was the chance to chill out on the lawn or in the cute art spaces, listening to the bands play and having a drink, something that folks increasingly seem to be doing far less of these days. If you are headed to Hua Hin for the weekend, the Cicada Market is well worth a gander. Cicada Market www.cicadamarket.com Khao Takiab-Hua Hin Road (next to the Hyatt Regency). Like a flashback to the ’80s, in their rustic roller skating playground at the charmingly weathered and very ‘local’ Ladprao Imperial World shopping mall, two women are gearing up with colorful padding. Four have showed up to roller derby practice today. The first is Verta from Wyoming, with blonde hair set in pigtails under a fierce hot pink helmet and sporting brightly checkered socks reminiscent of the bubbly-but-badass Drew Barrymore in the ‘Whip It’ movie. Then there’s Emma, from a small town in Wirral, England, her intricate arm tattoos, nose piercing and custom-made winged skates give her an edge but it’s the inexplicable sparkle she possesses that is most outstanding. Lastly are the two Thais, a sweet babyfaced girl and the only apparent man on the team, both practicing laps around the tiny rink. What is roller derby? It’s a team roller-skating competition, held on a banked oval track. Each of two teams has five members with a series of short ‘matchups.’ Teams select a ‘jammer’ (that is, a scorer) who wins points by lapping members of the opposite team, therefore the aim is to assist your jammer whilst defending the opposing jammer. This takes a unique amount of skill, as teams
must both play offense and defense simultaneously. Roller derby is a full contact sport that makes it a truly powerful and exhilarating game to play, not to mention, watch! Verta is the official spokesperson for Bangkok Roller Derby. She speaks fondly of her sporting background and how she came to discover the sport and her insatiable passion for competing. She recalls the physical freedom the game allows as women; although passive and caring individuals, roller derby is a ‘safe’ place to channel female aggression in a sport that relies on brute but, more importantly, on strategy. How did roller derby come about in Bangkok and by whom? Verta: Enid Blight’em started the league. She had played roller derby before and wanted to start something here. The members all know each other through roller derby. League members have brought in friends to try it out, but most of the people either want to try something new or have been doing it elsewhere.
