Celebrities often have limitations on what they’ll share with journalists. Even though they’re in the public eye, they’ll set boundaries about what they are comfortable revealing formally. This doesn’t stop the public from speculating, of course, about who is dating whom or whether someone has a “baby bump.” This issue’s cover model, however, has such an incredible role on such an outstanding show that we happily spent the entire interview talking about her career and her propulsion into the public eye. Who needs gossip when you have a breakout star on your hands? On a gorgeous summer day, Samira Wiley walked out onto the cozy café patio wearing a gray tank top, jeans, and no makeup. Despite her understated accessorizing and petite frame, Wiley’s aura filled up the whole space. Her eyes sparkled as she introduced herself. She was quiet, and maintained a confident presence. As we began the interview, her quiet spirit gave rise to a depth of character that seems fitting coming from an actress from one of entertainment’s most successful series. The Netflix original series, Orange is the New Black, has made instant stars out of its massive, mostly female cast. The women on the show represent nearly every race, size, and sexual orientation. The show has generated a huge fan base and twelve Emmy nominations, making it a cultural and critical success. Perhaps more importantly, however, is the show’s portrayal of complicated and layered female characters. The characters and the beautifully written scripts allows this talented, multi-faceted ensemble cast the chance to shine through their dramatic and comedic acting. And, boy, does Samira shine. She says, “I’ve known I wanted to be an actress my whole life. As long as I’ve known that acting was a thing that existed and you could get paid to do it, I wanted to do it.” She attended a school for the arts in high school, and while acting and theatre were her passion, she says she never felt validated by those around her. Samira says she didn’t feel a certainty that she was truly gifted until later.

Like so many of us (perhaps women especially), Samira doubted her gift. When she wasn’t offered the lead roles in plays and wasn’t getting verbal affirmation, she experienced disenchantment that for some of us would have meant quitting. Year after year, she attended a creative arts camp and never got that big role. Despite the disappointment of not being chosen, she marched on: learning

her craft, studying her art, finding her voice. Only after a college professor saw what the rest of the world now sees, and suggested Samira audition for the prestigious Julliard School for performing arts in New York City did she realize her potential. It was that small nudge that propelled her into what is now a career of incredible success and accolades. That ounce of encouragement from a mentor changed the course of Samira’s life, and allows her to use her gift in a very public way. Now she hears from people on social media and in person on a daily basis about how she inspires others and gives people hope. Her decision to stick with her passion now provides motivation for others to chase their dreams. When I ask about Samira’s newfound fame, she seems somewhat uneasy. Her ambivalence is driven by her strong passion for her craft and the complications of navigating a new world where everyone already knows her (or thinks they do). “You know, I always loved talking to people, and just being out in the world and getting someone to like me through my own personality,” she intimates. Once people have a feeling they know you already, it’s hard to make those spontaneous connections. Deeply loving and loyal towards her fans, though, she says she feels their adoration for the show and also the deep connection they have to its characters, including hers. Samira says, “Because of the way the show’s episodes are released all at once on Netflix, people can decide how they want to consume it, which gives them a sense of ownership over it.” Samira says the intimacy that Orange is the New Black provides through this unique structure made her a celebrity almost literally overnight. Despite the fact that she is still learning how to wade through the challenges of stardom, she feels her work is a ministry. As someone who was raised in the church by pastor parents, Samira knows something about the intersection of spirituality and artistry. She sees her acting talent as a gift she can offer to others. Her goal was not to obtain fame and fortune, but to work and to use her gift. Thanks to Orange is the New Black it looks like she’ll get both for a long time.

and gain control of others. And just like in real life, there are no clear villains and heroes; they’re all complicated people who are powerful in different ways. Samira’s character, Poussey Washington, developed greatly in the second season, and the audience learned more about her complicated backstory. We saw Poussey demonstrate power through integrity and loyalty. Meeting Samira, it is clear there is much of her in the Poussey character she plays. Her contemplative depth is offset by her contagious laugh and genuine warmth. Like her character, there is a quiet strength hidden behind a lightness. She feels that she has become a woman of power, but said she might not have said that a few months ago. Like many of us, Samira is slowly moving into her own strength, and she is finding power in the realization that she is an amazing, talented, powerful woman.

After years of feeling like she wasn’t quite good enough for those standout acting parts and hoping to be the lead in plays, Samira is now one of Hollywood’s breakout stars on a hit show. Even though she might not have acknowledged that she was a woman of power a few months ago, it takes a quiet strength to continue pursuing your dream in the face of little or no validation for years.

It is that perseverance that Maniac is celebrating in this issue. The characters of Orange is the New Black, and the many talented actors who play them, demonstrate a type of strength from which we can all learn. These deeply flawed, beautiful creatures keep going, and Samira Wiley is a true dynamo packed inside a small, beautiful vessel.

She gains great inspiration from “those who are trailblazers, those leading the charge.� Candice also credits the women in her family who modeled great strength and character as the foundation of her hard-working ethics both personally and professionally. Working in the beauty industry exposes Michele to a wide range of people, and she says she’s lucky to work in a field that encourages women to “reach greater heights.” Michele says she gains much of her inspiration from God, family, and self-determination, and she is not someone who is afraid to try new things and take on different jobs. In addition to her day job, Michele loves copywriting for small businesses, and she says it is another outlet for her to help others succeed while empowering herself at the same time.

Vonda Wright, MD, MS Orthopaedic Surgeon, Speaker, Author Medical Director, UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex Dr. Vonda Wright is among a small percentage of female orthopaedic surgeons in the United States, but the numbers of women are rising in this male-dominated field. As the recently named inaugural Medical Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, Wright has a “profound opportunity” to continue sports excellence and elite care for people of all ages. MANIAC Art Did you ever doodle as a kid, squiggle lines or maybe paint what you thought was a masterpiece during your single digit years? For most of us, doodling was just a hobby or a way to kill time. For Emily Traynor, it was the beginning of her beautifully colorful career.

Growing up near Gettysburg, Emily loved art, especially drawing, and ended up attending the University of Pittsburgh majoring in Studio Art. Throughout her years at the university, Emily developed a unique style and concept with regards to her work. With the combination of beautiful ink fountain pen lines and careful watercolor placement, Emily creates the perfect balance of realism and cartoon, minimalism and pop art. In a city where the art scene is always changing, growing, and embracing those who witness its progress, Emily certainly brings something new to the table, or the wall, in this case.

COLORING OUTSIDE THE LINES The Art of Emily Traynor BY DESTINY JOHNSON

As a freelance artist, Emily’s work is used by local and national businesses, including print, online publications, blogs, and even podcasts. Additionally, she is always eager to create personal commissions through her Etsy site (link at the end of the article). As an independent woman, making art in the city of Pittsburgh, Emily says the best part about freelancing here is that she gets to do things how she wants to do them, without limits or boundaries. She says, “There is always art in something. It’s scary

sometimes that I don’t have a set agenda, but that means you get to make it up as you go.” Emily says she approaches her work in a way that is a little unusual for artists. Instead of obsessing about the piece as a whole, she focuses on the media that will be used. It isn’t all about the end result, but what you put into it to make it what it is. For someone whose work is so playful and whimsical, she gets serious about her pens. She says her fountain pens, and the lines that they create to set a boundary for her realism and cartoon world are the most important pieces. You can sense her passion when she talks about them. She says the pens’ lines are interesting and flawless, leaving just the right amount of space to color and fill them up with watercolors, and of course, a lot of turquoise, since it is her favorite color at the moment. And for all the upcoming and thriving future Women of Power, I asked Emily, “what does it mean and what do you have to do in order to reach this level of independence as a woman in today’s world?” She couldn’t have responded with a better, more uplifting message. “You need to get over the feeling of not quite knowing what you’re doing. You have to make your own way and know that it’s going to work out. When Mark Deklin isn’t taking off his shirt for a sexy love scene, he is probably at home braiding his daughter’s hair or reading his son bedtime stories. That’s right. Not only is the Devious Maids heartthrob, Mark Deklin, a talented actor, but he is also an amazing father raising two beautiful children. As soon as he heard they were casting the role of the dark, mysterious hunk, Nicholas Deering, on Devious Maids, Mark had an interest in the multi-faceted character. As a veteran actor, Marks says he is attracted to characters with layers and complexities, which made Nicholas and his clandestine, murderous past, a perfect fit. In the cliffhanger season 2 finale that aired in July, viewers learned that Nicholas had killed a child in a car accident and covered it up. “When I first heard the secret of Nicholas, I said that is absolutely unforgivable. I couldn’t even see the human being behind it. But as an actor, I had to, just to do it service to the character.” Mark told us. “One of the gifts of being an actor is that you get to be in the skin of someone else who you may have otherwise judged and dismissed.”

Deklin has been able to develop Nicholas into a character to whom many viewers have fallen in love, despite his horrific past. Though the shirtless scenes may have something to do with so many viewers being smitten with Nicholas, Devious Maids producers and Mark himself have been overwhelmed with how much fans have taken a liking towards his character. While on set, Mark is surrounded by some of Hollywood’s most powerful women including Eva Longoria, Roselyn Sanchez, and one of Maniac’s past covermodels, Dania Ramirez, just to name a few. Though most men might find it intimidating to work with such incredibly accomplished women, Deklin finds it to be comforting. After being around strong women his whole life, Mark is drawn to powerful women. “I love working with strong women. I feel like I have a pretty balanced male and female energy in my personal life, so I don’t find it intimidating, I find it fantastic,” he told us. When Mark’s not mesmerizing millions of women with his breathtaking physique on Devious Maids, he is at home being a daddy to his son and daughter—his all-time favorite role. Mark admits he’s the kind of parent who doesn’t want to miss anything when it comes to his children. Whether it be gardening, bath time, or story time, Mark has been overcome with the joy his children bring to his life, telling us, “It’s just so liberating to have someone that you love more than yourself.”

Pregnancy is difficult enough, but Adrienne Toth had extra challenges as she went through those nine months while battling cancer. She is currently a Stage IV cancer patient, and gets “alone time” with her husband, Dean, each Wednesday night when she’s getting her chemo infusion. “Talk about romance!” she quips. This is her second diagnosis, and she says it made her realize “how important it is to enjoy every minute of every day.” Adrienne accomplishes this, in part, by spending time with her family and loving herself as she is. After losing her hair twice, doing thirty rounds of chemo, giving birth, and having her breasts removed, she says she still feels sexy. “I rock my bald head and new body because it’s me.” Even in the midst of her trials, Adrienne has dealt with hurtful comments made by those who thought she should not get chemo while pregnant. She made some difficult choices, and did what she believed was best for her and her precious son. This is one Maniac mama who is sexy and inspiring—bald head and all!

ANDI STEIN Executive Assistant, Classrooms Without Borders One of the things Andi Stein has learned is how difficult it can be to juggle everything. She says finding that balance between your lover, baby, pets, and life in general is very challenging, but rewarding and absolutely worth it. She acknowledges how difficult it can be to find time for herself, but finds that being organized and timing things out is more important than ever. Andi thinks the idea that moms tend to “let themselves go” is a myth, but she says sometimes you just have to get a quick shower and air dry your hair in order to fit everything in the day. “I want to look good for my son, Sebastian, and be a role model as he grows up,” she says. Something tells us Sebastian doesn’t mind if his mom does a quick air dry or has a fancy blowout—he loves his Maniac mom just the same and so do we.

Brandy Vlasic finds great satisfaction in being a mom and a businesswoman, but acknowledges that it limits her free time and forces her to prioritize quality time with her husband and daughter, Vivian. What once were priorities to Brandy now seem trivial in comparison to enjoying time with her beautiful little girl. She says she wants to feel good about herself inside and out, and is committed to staying in shape and tries to avoid the sweatpants vortex many women get sucked into. She says she wants to “be a fit mom and a role model” for Vivian. Despite having little free time and having to manage her ambitious business pursuits, Brandy wants to look and feel good and be the best mom she can possibly be. PerLora is celebrating 20 years of furnishing Pittsburgh’s trendiest hot spots and homes with its contemporary concepts and designs. After co-owners Perry and Lora Sigesmund opened its doors in 1994, PerLora rose to the top as one of Pittsburgh’s go-to stores for businesses and homeowners looking to design their space. Perry and Lora’s story in the business began after a few glasses of Sangria and a delicious dinner, when the married couple strolled down the streets of Pittsburgh’s South Side. There they saw a rundown storefront with broken windows that stopped 64

Though they struggled to get a loan and listened to multiple people doubt the concept, the couple knew their idea would make it. Perry said, “To be honest, I do not think we lost any sleep when we decided to move forward and open PerLora.” Today, PerLora is a proven success and is celebrating its 20th year of business in

the Pittsburgh area. Due to their knowledgeable team of designers and unique, contemporary furnishings, PerLora has been praised by multiple publications as one of the “Best Furniture Stores” in the Pittsburgh area. “What makes this business rewarding is when you have a client since the day we opened.” Perry says. Not only do Perry and Lora pride themselves on the success of their store, but they also note that one of their greatest accomplishments has been their ability to give back to the community. Upper St. Clair resident and Austria native, Karin Mayr spent the early years of her fashion career working as a trend forecaster and marketing consultant for European textile mills and some of America’s biggest fashion brands, including Armani A/X, Donna Karan, and Banana Republic. When she ended her partnership with a European menswear firm and her husband’s business closed, the couple found themselves in need of a change and a way to provide for their family. When Mayr’s husband, Konrad, introduced her to European jewelry designer, Sabine, the possibility of a family-owned jewelry line became real. A visit to Sabine’s studio to admire the Swarovski crystals sealed the deal for Mayr. With her strong fashion background and the help of her business-minded husband, Mayr launched Sabika in 2001. At first, Mayr designed the pieces herself, tailoring the design to American tastes, and then began codesigning with her eldest daughter and Vice President of Design, Alexandra Mayr-Gracik. Mayr’s younger daughter, Kerstin Mayr, also joined the team as Vice President of Field Development and Sales. As the heart of Sabika’s marketing efforts, Kerstin was able to offer some insight on the inner-workings of the company and its bright future. “We grow when a customer falls in love with the collection. It’s one piece and one customer at a time,” she says. With over 800 consultants in 32 states, it comes as no surprise that Sabika grew almost 40% in sales volume and consultant recruitment in 2013. On the topic of Sabika’s unique direct sales marketing model, Kerstin says, “The model was chosen specifically for our jewelry. The retail concept doesn’t work for Sabika because of our strong mix-and-match concept. Our collections build upon each other. We

follow what’s happening on the runways in Milan and Paris and New York very closely.” Sabika pays -attention not only to the crafting of beautiful, timeless pieces, but also to the impact they make on the economy. “To be able to provide an opportunity to women is huge. That’s who we are,” says Kerstin. “We train our consultants very diligently on the design process, on the pieces themselves, on the heritage behind the pieces. We’re developing entrepreneurs.” In addition to the opportunity they provide for women across the country, Sabika has also made great strides with their fundraising efforts. In 2013 alone, Sabika donated over $416,000 to non-profits such as the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Sabika also contributes to Child Law Services Inc., located in West Virginia, and the Ronald McDonald House of Pittsburgh. Sabika encourages its consultants to contribute to the community as well. “We have consultants across the country that

are able to have their own fundraisers,” says Kerstin. “And when they do, they give 5% of their sales to an organization of their choice, and we match that.” The combination of original design, handcrafted pieces, and rich family history offers customers a truly unique shopping experience. “I was so young when I did [Survivor]. I didn’t think about the cameras,” Jenna remarks about her time on the show and then experiencing the media onslaught after. “It was hard to experience criticism about something silly from people who didn’t know me, but kind of did know me.” Although the viewing audience loved it when she stripped for the reward of peanut butter and chocolate, she says that the experience of being hungry all the time consumed her. It took her a year to recover her metabolism and routine. However, the results were not all bad. She did receive accolades as a spokesperson and, icing on the deserved cake, as a Playboy model. After ten years in New York riding the Survivor fame wave, Jenna has returned to her hometown, Pittsburgh, to write a book about a storied life as a reality star. While her confidence is evident, so is her inner survivor. During the 2004 Survivor: AllStar Season she lost her mother to breast cancer and left the series to spend time with her. Then fellow Survivor winner and then boyfriend, Ethan Zohn, was diagnosed with cancer also, and she stood beside him supporting him along his journey. Jenna’s advice for surviving besides being strong and true to yourself: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. “Life went crazy after Survivor; births, deaths, and life,” she says. “It’s important to ask people for help even when they are afraid because they don’t want to be a bother. Surviving can be surrendering your self to friends. Let them help.”

Surviving the sixth season of the reality series Survivor: The Amazon, was just the beginning of Jenna Morasca’s career as a television star, host, and now soon-to-be author. 68

During her time in New York she became passionate about another type of survivor: older rescue dogs. She adopted Bobbi, a pit bull/mastiff from a Brooklyn shelter, and began encouraging people to adopt older dogs. In particular she relates to pit bulls, because they are often misunderstood. “People had their opinions about me, that I was mean or cold like a pit bull. She was a life saver. She was there when my relationship (with Ethan) was ending.” Currently she is writing a fictionalized book based upon her reality experiences, titled Million Dollar Crazy. Jenna is having fun reinventing herself as the main character Lola, who is worried about fame and money as she is subjected to public opinion. “It will be fun for readers to guess who the Paris Hilton character might be in the book,” says Jenna about her inspiration. “In 2003, I had different access because there weren’t that many reality shows, so I was treated with higher regard.” Therefore, she is changing names so the Former US President that hit on her will remain unidentified for possible reasons of National Security.

It was a glamorous night full of socializing and barking at Maniac’s Mutts and Mingle event. Misty Pines Dog Park Co. was packed with proud animal owners and their furry little friends to help benefit Animal Friends, a non-profit companion animal resource center in the Pittsburgh area. Outside, the dogs roamed around while their owners had the opportunity to speak with various pet-related vendors about doggy products and get advice on improving their pet’s health. Vendors included Dr. Shannon Thieroff from BelaCoop Animal Hospital, Furrever Friends, WearWoof, and Pet Connections. The guests were also treated to delicious food and drinks courtesy of Alla Famiglia and T-Bones Marketplace inside the doggie arena. The highlight of the night included a dog show featuring Marleen Ashton, the Chair of the Board of Directors for Animal Friends and her two incredibly well-trained German Shepherds. The night came to an exciting end with the drawing of the Chinese auction, which featured over 40 amazing prizes including spa packages, jewelry, gift cards to Pittsburgh’s best restaurants, and many more. The Maniac Mutts and Mingle event sponsored by Frank B. Fuhrer Wholesale, MINI of Pittsburgh, and Fragasso Financial Advisors proved to be a huge success, raising over $10,000 for Animal Friends.

MANIAC feature Most police departments do not have a microchip scanner, thus dogs and cats are turned over to the respective animal control agencies servicing each municipality. “They usually don’t scan for microchips either, and the animal can be killed in 48 hours if unclaimed by the owner,” says Fragasso. Thankfully, things in Pittsburgh are changing. 119 police departments will now have microchip scanners, which are essential to getting your pets home safely, ultimately saving their lives. The scanners cost about $200 each, and no tax

Losing a pet is devastating. Our dogs and cats are not just domestic animals, but family members. Although we put up flyers, call neighbors, and do everything we can to get our pets back, sometimes they never return. Until now, most local police units did not have access to microchip scanners, which resulted in animals being sent to shelters instead of back home. Each year approximately 20,000 dogs and cats are euthanized in Allegheny County, including lost pets, which prompted Bob Fragasso, owner of Fragasso Financial Advisors, to step in. Fragasso, who is on the board of Animal Friends, and his wife purchased a microchip scanner for a local police department, and realized how imperative it is for all departments in Allegheny County to have one as well. 72

The food truck craze is sweeping the nation, and with shows about them on the Food Network and an ever-increasing number of gourmet options tempting foodies on the move, the trend shows no signs of stopping. Food trucks used to be synonymous with greasy, bad quality eats, but their food has become sought after in recent years as gourmands have taken street food to a higher level.

There’s no question that we all need and deserve time to unwind and have fun, but Glaser’s book encourages us to take stock of the pace and amount we drink, maintain limits, and find new ways of blowing off steam. While moderate drinking is great for socializing, relaxing, and celebrating, many of us are using it to self-medicate. Glaser describes this phenomenon in her book, but doesn’t encourage women to immediately run to AA or similar programs that she says simply don’t work and aren’t often necessary. Glaser argues that these programs have not demonstrated success, and are used as a catchall for people whose problems vary widely.

We’ve all cracked jokes about needing a glass of wine to deal with a bad day, an unruly child, or a stubborn husband, but Gabrielle Glaser uncovers alarming statistics about women’s drinking in her book Her Best Kept Secret. It turns out, women are using wine and other alcohol to cope with increasing pressures at home and work. While the current generation of women has joined the workforce and academia at exponentially higher rates than our mothers and grandmothers, we still maintain a disproportionate amount of the domestic work. We might be “leaning in” to our careers, but we’re not “leaning out” of the house and parenting work, which amounts to a lot of stress. To deal with these intense lifestyles, we have been popping the corks on alcohol to “take the edge off.” Her Best Kept Secret describes the pattern of drinking women develop that starts with a glass at dinner and ends with them dropping off empty wine bottles at the recycling center so no one sees the amount of consumption. Book clubs are jokingly referred to as places where women go to talk about a book for five minutes and drink copious amounts of wine. Alcohol has also become a go-to gift given to new moms because they’re “going to need it.”

Glaser argues that many people with drinking problems just need to develop coping skills and alternative methods of medicating rather than enter a treatment program that defines their problem as a “disease” and an all-or-nothing scenario. While her critics might think Glaser is encouraging alcoholics to continue down a destructive path, she uses statistics and historical evidence to show other means for women to get help with their drinking. One of the most powerful themes in the book is realizing how often we as women often try to deal with problems by ourselves. We take care of others at our own expense. Glaser encourages women to help each other, and to not feel shame if we’re overwhelmed or if motherhood isn’t exactly as fun as we imagined. So, cheers, to waking up to the ways women are using alcohol and to finding new ways to cope with our undoubtedly difficult lives. Jeffrey Smith Studio has reached a tipping point, so the group decided it is ready for a new challenge. SURFER GIRL GIRL WHO RUNS THE WORLD Adventure runner Samantha Gash originally used running as a way of breaking up her studies. Now, she uses running to empower people around the world. In 2010, Samantha Gash ran four 250km marathons in the extreme deserts of Chile, China, Egypt, and Antarctica, making her the first woman ever to complete the 4 Deserts Grand Slam. “It takes more mental strength than physical strength. It’s more of an adventure.” Her adventure is featured in the documentary, Desert Runners (desertrunnersmovie.com). For Gash, the Grand Slam was only the first step, saying, “Running has become the least important aspect of what I do. I can use it as a vehicle. It has taken me all around the world, and now I can use it for change.” Since her success in the 4 Desert Series, Gash became involved with many charities. For example, in 2012, she earned $30,000 for an education program called Save

the Children when she ran a solo 379km through the Simpson Desert in Australia.

During the 2014-2015 season, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is showcasing the world class talent of its musicians throughout the 20 weekends of the BNY Mellon Grand Classics series. The Pittsburgh Symphony is doing its part to include many women of power, with about a third of the orchestra being female. Among them are several women, who are counted among the top performers in the world. We wanted to introduce you to some of these talented women.

Lorna McGhee, Principal Flute

To read the list of places Nancy Goeres has performed, you would think she was a rock-and-roll singer on a world tour, but instead she’s the principal bassoonist for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her work with the symphony, Nancy spends time traveling and offering master classes in places like Europe, Canada, Mexico, South America, and frequently returns to China. Despite her global work, she expands her reach even further by providing workshops via the Internet. While Nancy doesn’t consider herself a woman of power per se, she has been with the symphony for 30 years, and is pleased to see greater numbers of women joining the company.

Scottish-born Lorna McGhee, principal flute with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, is a performer, teacher, and even an honorary “Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music.” With that regal title, you’d think she could rest on her laurels, but Lorna continues to aim higher. Along with Duo partner Heidi Krutzen, McGhee has released two CDs on Skylark Music: Taheke, 20th century Masterpieces for flute and harp and Canada, New Works for flute and harp. As a member of Trio Verlaine (with Heidi Krutzen, harp and David Harding, viola) McGhee has most recently recorded Fin de Siècle, a CD of music by Debussy and Ravel for Skylark Music. Lorna has given master classes at several prestigious schools including Julliard, which happens to be the alma mater of this month’s cover model.

Jennifer Ross might be a Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Principal Second Violin now, but she began her orchestral career at the young age of 19 with the Honolulu Symphony. Among her incredible accomplishments, she has served on the jury of the prestigious Sphinx Competition for Black and Latino String Players. In addition to the demanding schedule of being a full-time musician in the world-class Pittsburgh Symphony, Jennifer has also run in 13 marathons and is a certified yoga instructor.

Anne Martindale Williams, Principal Cello

Pittsburgh is lucky to be home to many incredible artists, and Anne Martindale Williams is unquestionably one of them. Her long tenure as principal cellist for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is just one of the many things on her résumé. She is a frequent teacher of masters classes at universities and festivals, faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University, and was featured on the BBC’s Concertos and WQED’s “Previn and the Pittsburgh” television specials. An impressive woman, indeed, and we suspect her husband and daughter, Claire, agree.

Despite her success, Loya is also interested in helping others reach their goals, so she donates enormous amounts of time and energy to a variety of organizations, and was recently awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Washington Teen Outreach. Loya says her husband and three children also work with her to help the community. Their volunteer work includes passing out 4,000 American flags each Memorial Day to honor those who serve or have served in the military. And it doesn’t stop with people, Loya and her family work hard to help the animals in the area by volunteering for Animal Friends and the Washington Human Society. Loya’s work at Coldwell Banker Real Estate Services began in 1998 when her family relocated back to the Western Pennsylvania region after living in Southern California where she had been a Personal Banking Manager. She says moving into the real estate space was a natural progression as she had familiarity with the industry as well as the personality to work well with buyers and sellers. She was drawn to Coldwell Banker because the company “has a fabulous philosophy to provide ‘Truly Remarkable Service’ and is open to change and innovation,” which sounds a lot like Loya! 84

In addition to the four D’s that inspire her success, Loya says her motto is, “Proper, prior, preparation precedes perfect performance.” While that is quite a mouthful, she says being ready for anything and being prepared is the foundation for facing the day and obtaining success. Loya’s career is filled with great achievements and a strong work ethic, and it seems she approaches every area of her life--career, family, and charity—with this attitude.
