The holidays are here again, complete with tidings of good cheer, groans about the cold, and cozy nights in. As we compiled this issue we were committed to showing our readers all the fun prezzies they could buy for their friends and family, places they could shop, and even highlighting the amazingly gorgeous and tranquil offerings of a getaway to Finland. What we forgot a little along the way is the spirit of giving and kindness. With deadlines, demands, and debates, even I found myself snapping a bit.

The holidays can ironically bring out the worst in us--so much to do, and so little time. After I had a temporary breakdown, I took a deep breath and realized we were working on an issue that was supposed to shine a light on the beauty and fun of this time of year. I hope that all our hard work will bring some holiday cheer to your world.

“Are you sure you’re eating enough? Do you have enough money? You’re getting too skinny!” These are the things Jamie Chung’s parents still say
Jamie’s Korean-born parents still see her as the little girl they know and love, despite her incredible success in The Hangover films and countless other big budget movies. Despite their concerns about her eating enough, we’re pretty sure Jamie is doing just fine. With her upcoming Disney animated film, Big Hero 6, about to hit theaters, she is continuing what has been a steady climb to the top of Hollywood’s A-list.
“ There are so
many things I still want to do and people I want to work with.
” 18
Speaking with Jamie was particularly fun for me since we share a common background in MTV reality shows. Jamie was a cast member on The Real World: San Diego in 2004 and appeared on a subsequent Challenge the following year. As a fellow Challenge cast member, I know firsthand that Jamie is one of the few reality stars who is universally beloved. I have never heard anyone say a bad word about her, and she is known for her perseverance, strength, and kindness. It’s safe to say this is not what people typically think of reality folks. Jamie, however, managed to parlay her time on MTV into acting roles, which increasingly grew as the world took notice of her incredible beauty, talent, and charisma. Even though success in Hollywood always requires a bit of luck, Jamie is known for having an amazing work ethic and commitment to her craft. She attributes this willingness to work hard to her parents, who, like many immigrants, knew they had to dig deep to create the American dream. In the beginning of her career, Jamie says she “just went on tons of auditions, and learned how to let go of the rejection.” She describes the casting process and how directors often have very specific ideas on how the character should look, and not being picked isn’t necessarily a reflection on one’s talent. Realizing this helped her take rejection with a grain of salt, and allowed her to continue working toward her goals.
And Jamie has goals aplenty! When I asked her what the future holds since she has already tackled television, film, and animation, she assured me she never stops dreaming. “There are so many things I still want to do and people I want to work with.” Jamie says she is inspired all the time to improve, take chances, and try new things. Recording the voice for a Disney character was one of those goals, and Jamie says it was fascinating to see how the animators used her mannerisms and personality in her character, Go Go. “The film is amazing!” she gushed. After the success of Frozen, we can only imagine what Disney has up its sleeves, and Jamie clearly has a sense of the legacy that the company creates. “Knowing that generations of kids will watch the film and hear my voice is just incredible.” She says she remains tremendously grateful and she sees every job as a gift. As if she has time for other projects, Jamie says she wanted something to keep her creative and busy during her off periods, so she started a lifestyle/fashion blog called WhatTheChung. com, where she posts pics and opens up about her travels and life. She also interacts with users with the hashtag #InstantKarma, which allows her followers to share their stories, some of which are featured on the blog. Even though Jamie has hit the big time and left the rest of us reality cast members in the dust, I wanted to know what she thinks of the genre these days. “I still watch the Challenges, and I love seeing my friends compete and give their all.” She says she isn’t a complete reality junkie and skips shows like the Real Housewives series, but she says she loves adventure shows. “I am obsessed with Naked and Afraid, where they send people out into the wild and they just have to figure it all out.” Contestants on that show get to bring one tool with them. I asked her what tool she would bring and she said without hesitation, “A firestarter! That is key, no matter what, these people need fire.” And there is no question Jamie has a metaphorical fire. Sounds like she still has a bit of that competitive spirit that made her a success on MTV’s The Challenge, and now she’s putting it to 19
UNDERCOVER much better use in the real real world. We cannot wait to see what this beauty brings to the big screen and how she’ll continue to delight us with her lifestyle blog and other projects. Her art is a reflection of her, and knowing that she truly is deserving of her great success makes it even more fun to watch. We love the fact that Jamie’s parents are keeping her humble, but it seems like it won’t be long before they see this starlet is just getting started. We think she’ll have plenty of work for a long time. Visit whatthechung.com to check out Jamie’s blog.

MANIAC Art like this. I don’t fucking know,” proclaims Batch arms open wide. “It makes me feel alive the fact that I don’t know. I am an artist right now, the thing I said I was going to be in elementary.” In his youth, Baron’s teacher told him to pick a more realistic occupation than that of artist or football player. At the age of 26, Batch has done both with rock-star status.
“I was strategizing. I did nothing that anybody else can’t do. That’s why I say anyone can be an artist, if you are not an artist; you are not doing it right, if you want to be. You learn how to manipulate life. You learn how to make moves and jockey for position. And move without money.” At the core of the question what made Baron Batch, a juxtaposition of strength
“People see an artist like a rock star, but what they are is a person who likes to make art, for them it’s very weird. But I have played at that level, I have been a rock-star when I played in the NFL, and now I am an artist.” Baron is also a modern day philosopher, weaving a tornado of spellbinding prose that is reflected onto canvas as his signature motto “Free.” His personal branding began first as a talented football player, and then as a passionate artist that has also given birth to his ad agency Studio AM and interior design services. Coupled with his vibrant art, he and his staff create furniture pieces that double as installations. He also performs live action paintings alongside the Pittsburgh Symphony. Pop-X is his own branding of the post-Pop Art movement of expressionism, based on Warhol’s model.
BARON BATCH :
FROM BLACK & GOLD TO FULL COLOR FORMER NFL STAR, BARON BATCH, IS NOW CHANNELING HIS OTHER PASSION: ART BY SARAH LOLLEY, PHOTOGRAPHY BY JARED WICKERHAM, WICKPHOTOGRAPHY.COM
Forceful, frenzied color, forming graphic illustrative playful, yet thought-provoking images adorn Baron Batch’s Homestead studio. In the front room, the reclaimed wooden tables and bar makes it feel like you stepped into the hippest new hangout. 32
He chose to stay in Pittsburgh after nearly three years as a Steeler because he exclaims, “I know what an oil boom looks like and Pittsburgh is prime.”
and grit with sensitivity of emotional hues, is one word that he repeats as a chorus: circumstance.
money. Most kids never are in that dynamic, they are the coveted ones, but they never see the freedom of being without.”
“My job as an artist is to put myself out there so people hear about me. As an artist that’s your job, to be seen!” Batch gestures with a big celebrity smile.
“Circumstance. Circumstance,” chants Baron. “I could never afford it. Paint is expensive. I could never afford it until I was in the NFL. I want to wear colors all over, like this is my wealth, to be able to afford paint.
In the past year as he put down the football
This is Baron Batch’s crib, a comfortable place where he hatches ideas and transfers them to color. Baron’s limitless imagination and ambition is as spirited as the day he launched his goals to be a football player and an artist growing up in Texas.
So I am going to dress like that wherever I go.” He tugs at his paint splattered jeans.
In contrast, a bathtub of crumpled paint tubes sits in the backroom and work tables are plastered with color.
“Most people say I got a book, I believe this, I am going to school for this, and I am going to marry
During his life as a football player his most valuable lesson was about the art of business. He presented himself with sincerity and determination that remains his backbone.
Growing up on the opposite end of the proverbial tracks he valued his freedom and being out in the open. “Even though I was broke, I could do whatever I wanted. I saw my friends envy those who had all this
and picked up his brushes, he opened a door in his mind that couldn’t be closed. He is luminescent with energy and to hear him speak you can’t help to see that ferocity is also part of his art. “Life made me an artist, that’s why. My work and I are the same thing.” For more on Baron Batch and his art visit: baronbatch.com

MANIAC music
my head so I can tell their stories too. I’m really inspired by the books I read.
FLYING HIGH :
MANIAC: What sets you apart from other musicians and bands? DAVE: Other musicians are very impressive, they are total fucking masters of their craft. I’m kind of a regular guy, still working on getting better at this. I do think my everyman approach to music has helped me as a songwriter to connect with almost anyone, but I still kind of wish I could shred on guitar. STEVE: I’m quite sure everyone who listens to ATC could say what sets us apart much better than I can! I personally think we bring some eclecticism and a “come as you are” attitude to our instrumentation and to our sound. So our songs can sound stylistically very different from each other on our albums.
THE MUSIC OF AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER BY HELEN CESTRA & SUSIE MEISTER, PHOTO SHOT BY RICK MACOMBER & EDITED BY CARMELA DIAZ
MANIAC: You have been called a “modern day indie rock band”. Is this how you would categorize yourself? CASEY: It’s always pretty hard for me to categorize our music because of how eclectic our songs are. We pull from so many different influences so a lot of different sounds show up in our songs. I guess I would say we’re a little electro-pop with a folk sensibility. We always want to make sure the song stands on its own, and then arrange it in a way that serves the song in the best way possible. MANIAC: Who are your musical inspirations? Dave: Everyone in The Beatles, Traveling Wilburys, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, They Might Be Giants, Mason Jennings, Jellyfish, Fleetwood Mac. STEVE: Today I’m inspired a lot by Jon Brion, Aaron Dessner, Jonny Greenwood, and Chris Walla. CASEY: I love discovering new music to get inspired by. Some of my favorites lately are Sylvan Esso, Tennis, and Mac Demarco. One musician that has always been a huge inspiration to me though is David Byrne of Talking Heads. He’s a brilliant writer, performer, and overall artist. MANIAC: What has been the biggest “moment” for your band?
Serving in the US Navy as a real-life air traffic controller, singer/songwriter Dave Munro sent home demos he wrote and recorded during his deployment. Upon returning home to Boston he discovered his music garnered an impressive number of fans and inspired the start of the rock band Air Traffic Controller with Steve Scott (lead guitar), Richie Munro (drums), Casey Sullivan (banjo, bass, and backing vocals), Alison Shipton (violin), Kiara Perico (viola). After breakout success under producer Bleu, the band was ready for round two including the use of a 40-piece orchestra on the song “Blame.” 34
Their most recent single “The House” is currently climbing the charts, and is available on iTunes. MANIAC: We know the story behind the band’s name, but is there more to it than the obvious? DAVE: There’s more to that story now-we’re a band. I hope people can find some musical connection to the words Air Traffic Controller-like sounds traveling through airwaves being controlled like an orchestra. MANIAC: Your album Nordo was funded on Kickstarter. Tell us how that happened and
why you wanted to go that route? DAVE: We built an extremely loyal fan base around our debut album The One, but like many independent bands, we were struggling to afford anything, like another record. We were dreaming big and needed support. So we asked the fans to help us get back in the studio by purchasing the album before it was recorded. And they bought it! It was a 30-day campaign, but we blew past our goal within the first 12 hours. Finding out these folks believed in us changed everything for me. I cried that night, happy tears. MANIAC: Where/how do you find inspiration
for your music? DAVE: Life experience mostly. When something happens, big or small, I start humming a song. I’m more likely to get a good idea when I’m on the go, not playing an instrument. STEVE: Ideas can come from a lot of places. Sometimes we’re working on a song or an arrangement and ideas just hit me immediately. Sometimes I can be listening to a minute detail in an old song that sounds nothing like an ATC song and I’ll have an “Aha!” moment where I’ll think, “That’s what this song needs!” It really isn’t something I can plan for. CASEY: I typically draw my inspiration from personal experience, but I find that sometimes it helps to dream and exaggerate a bit. If I’m writing about something, sometimes I’ll have a “what if this happened?” moment and it helps move my writing in another direction. I also like to create characters in
DAVE: We have moments all the time, they keep getting better. It’s not so much the magnitude of the moment, some are just personally meaningful. Winning the Independent Music Award for our song “You Know Me”--at this level, it really doesn’t get any better than that. That same day in NYC we also took home the Artist On The Verge award. Our goal is to make a connection with our audience. These accolades gave us a sense that we are reaching a lot of fans. MANIAC: Can we expect a new album from you soon? STEVE: Yes indeed! We’ve got about half done now, and we’re headed back into the studio at the beginning of December to finish it up. We’re back again with our amazing producer Bleu and Grammy-winning engineer Ducky Carlisle who were a big part of what made our last album Nordo so magical. We’re aiming for an early 2015 release! WHAT NOT TO MISS As a country that prides itself on celebrating ancient indigenous cultures and their mythologies, Finland keeps many traditions alive from days gone by. One such magical myth is that of their most famous resident.
WHERE TO STAY As a popular destination for adventurers and vacationers of all stripes, Finland has a plethora of lodging options. You can find something to suit any taste, but we’ve fallen in love with the glass igloos and log cabins that can be found at the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort. The Northern Lights that bring so many to Finland can be seen from the comfort of the resort’s glass igloo lodgings. The exquisite log cabins don’t have televisions, but they each have a fireplace and a sauna. We think that will warm you up just fine after a day in the snow. Lapland isn’t just a place to find incredible skiing opportunities, it is also home to Santa Claus himself. Rovaniemi, in Lapland, is in the Arctic Circle, and is where Santa resides year round. Not only is this enchanted land where all of St. Nick’s magic happens, residents and tourists are able to meet him every day of the year.

Maniac Magazine: So, what do you like most about being a hairstylist? Violet: I love making people feel beautiful! I love my job, and I love getting to express my creativity and art through people. Nothing brings me more joy than seeing that. A bad hair experience can be life changing, but a great one can inspire, motivate, and boost self-esteem in all the right places. MM: How would you describe your personal style? V: A gypsy-vampire who made a baby with a witch and a mermaid. That’s me. My style changes like the seasons in Pittsburgh. I adore cat shaped nails, the color black, bracelets, rings, unique earrings, and anything that sparkles. I enjoy grunge with a touch of class. My style is just being different and wearing what I feel and not what I’m supposed to.

MM: Who is your style icon? V: My first thought is Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, but in small doses. They inspire me for pieces I can wear every day, not a sold-out concert or fashion gala. But if I had to pick an everyday icon, it’d be Jessica Alba. She doesn’t even try and I love it. MM: What is one piece in your closet you could not live without? V: Combat boots. Whether it’s a flirty dress or leggings and a scarf, combat boots make my world go round.

I have done a lot of interviews in my day, but I can honestly say I’ve never had more fun than when talking to Eden Sher. Much like her character Sue Heck on ABC’s The Middle, Eden is hilarious, light-hearted, and smart. What makes talking to her so incredible, though, is the way she exudes joyfulness. She made my cold, dead heart melt. This starlet throws all Hollywood stereotypes out the window with her diva-less demeanor. There are some people who do interviews because it’s part of their job, and are clearly itching to wrap it up as soon as possible. Eden came to play. Talking to her was like talking to an old friend. Sher’s amiable personality might have something to do with why she caught the attention of The Tonight Show’s Jay Leno when his crew visited her middle school. She, along with her brother Cosmo, became fan favorites and got their own recurring segment called, “Just Ask Eden and Cosmo,” where they fielded questions from the audience. This segment was complete with its own theme song, which Eden will gladly sing for you. I got serenaded with this jingle, and I don’t think I’ll ever be the same.
Eden has two Twitter accounts—one traditional one, and one called the emotionary, where she creates words that speak to unique feelings (eg “departaphobia—n. the anxiety of having to say goodbye, esp at a party when you want to leave”). Despite this creative endeavor, Sher has mixed feelings about social media. She loves connecting with her fans, but like many in the public eye, Eden thinks the online community can be a bit hostile. It’s hard to believe anyone could be mean to her though. In addition to being adorable, Eden has a quip ready for every question. She says her style icons are the people who model Snuggies in the commercials and that she eats In and Out fast food in large quantities. I cannot even keep up with the hilarity. The Middle recently celebrated its 100th episode as the stellar cast, led by Patricia Heaton, found a niche with their relatable storylines and Middle American values. And Sher’s Sue Heck is the kind of character that gives hope to awkward, but sweet, teens across the country, and if Eden Sher is any indication, those kids will turn out just fine. Restore her faith in social media and send her some love on Twitter @edensher and @theemotionary and visit www.the-emotionary.com.
After some memorable performances on Weeds and Sons and Daughters, Eden landed the gig of her goofy, but loveable character on The Middle. It is not surprising that Sher got the job given her ebullient personality and effervescence. How fun is it when good

TREASURES from HEAVEN Brother Wolf Offers Religious-Themed Jewelry BY SARAH MEYERS, PHOTOGRAPHY BY APRIL HUBAL HAIR AND MAKEUP BY VIOLET OF PHILIP PELUSI
There is a famous story of St. Francis and a wolf, in which the animal terrorizes the town of Gubbio. When St. Francis finds the wolf, he pleads with him to stop the violence by calling him, “Brother Wolf.”
we’re featuring. We want to know as much as possible so that we can write the story and share it with our customers. Each handmade piece comes with a card that explains the history and meaning.”
This story is where Brother Wolf jewelry got its name. “The line originally was inspired by St. Francis and his love for animals,” “says Jonathan Tesauro, Managing Partner of Brother Wolf. Brother Wolf leads the pack in offering religious-themed medallions, each designed and handcrafted to provide customers a meaningful relationship with their jewelry. Family-owned and run, Brother Wolf relies on the virtue and symbolism behind each piece it creates.
Brother Wolf takes a unique approach to giving back as well. Each piece is associated with a different virtue and social cause. “We choose charities based on the piece that will work with us and support our mission,” says Tesauro. “For example, the Sacred Heart piece represents love and supports Mercy Corp. Our Lady of Lourdes represents hope and supports the American Heart Association.” A full list of the pieces and their charities can be found on the Brother Wolf website.
Tesauro gave some insight into the inner workings of the company. “We believe in fashion with meaning and that style is a virtue. Those are the two very important aspects to Brother Wolf.”
44
On the subject of the future of Brother Wolf, Tesauro says, “Right now, there isn’t a true leader in the high-end spiritual jewelry industry. We want to be that leader.”
Brother Wolf takes a truly unique approach to jewelry design. Tesauro says, “Our designer travels the world and finds inspiration from different places. Relics found in remote shops far off the beaten path will inspire a design that will then be in the line.”
Brother Wolf’s Sanctus Collection features beautiful and intricate images of saints and Western mystics cast in precious metals with hand finished 14 karat gold or sterling silver framing.
When asked about the process of making the pieces, he says, “Once we have a design, we do extensive research on the saint or mystic that

How does one begin to describe the best meal she’s ever had? Wish me luck because that’s what I’m attempting to do here. As a former East Liberty resident, I’m delighted at the many and varied delicious dining options that have appeared in the area over the last few years. Some of the most delectable spots are hidden gems, which makes it fun to discover new places and spread the word. Celebrated Chef Dave Racicot’s notion, is one of those treasures. Tucked away on the busy South Highland Avenue, notion is easy to miss, but once you try the incredible food it will be all you think about. I sat down on a cold fall evening at the understatedly elegant restaurant, and had no idea what to expect. Chef Racicot decided to reward me with the Chef’s Tasting Menu, which is $85 and can be offered with wine pairings (to which I
THE INCREDIBLE EDIBLE ART of East Liberty’s notion restaurant
Celebrated Chef Dave Racicot invites you to dine on his masterful food whether you’re wearing a ball gown or jeans.
There was a pork dish that was incredibly tender and succulent and beets drenched in maple bubbles. Despite the fact that the food was amazing, the true appeal of notion is that there is no intimidation factor. You don’t have to worry about using the right fork or being uninformed. The staff, the menu, and the chef make these astounding dishes accessible to even the least food savvy among us. I would encourage you to try notion and know that everything on the menu is perfectly flavored, seasoned, and satisfying. You cannot pick the “wrong” thing. Chef Racicot, despite his enormous talent, is quite shy, and does not interact in the dining room, but if you would like to get to know him, notion also offers small, monthly cooking classes where you can learn tips, techniques, and get to know the chef. said, “Cheers!”). There is also a Fixed Price Menu option for $65, which allows guests to choose an appetizer, fish, meat, and dessert from the options. Perhaps I should have realized that the former dishwasher who worked his way up to Executive Chef, learned the art of cooking at Vegas’ Bellagio, and mastered his skills at his Oakmont restaurant, would have amazing food up his sleeve. He has worked tirelessly to study food, and now we can all reap the benefits. The food was outrageously delicious. It is difficult to decide the highlight of my meal because every course was incredible, but the beef tartare (complete with miniature lettuce circles to make wraps) was sublime. The moment the tartare touched my lips I was glad I hadn’t brought a date. I was now on a date with my dinner. And I was getting lucky. Jennifer, my lovely and informative server, helped make the evening a truly comfortable and fun experience. She provided me with lots of details about the food, but made it accessible. She described each dish, often as she poured sauces over them. The crab dish had an amazing roasted onion bouillon poured over it, and with each bite I would close my eyes. The experience was transcendent. Some of the fun came when surprise courses and drinks would arrive. Jennifer brought out a glass with candied ginger in the bottom, and poured a carrot soda over it for a truly unique drink.

THE AUTHENTIC ITALIAN COOKING OF
ALLA FAMIGLIA This family’s famous sauce is now available in stores around Pittsburgh. BY MIA BENCIVENGA
When paired with a well-balanced, flavorful sauce, no other food gives you that just-got-hugged-and-your-cheeks-pinchedby-grandma feeling quite like pasta. Now that the wind is infused with that telltale winter chill, there is all the more reason to seek out food that will make you warm and fuzzy from the inside out. If you want that feeling, or perhaps simply a crazy delicious Italian meal, look no further than Alla Famiglia. Located on East Warrington Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Allentown neighborhood, Alla Famiglia, simply meaning “The Family”, has one of the most sumptuous menus you will ever behold. From classics like calamari and filet mignon, and, naturally, oodles of mouth-watering pasta noodles, you’d be hard-pressed to find something that doesn’t make your tummy hungry. But for those of us who like to hermit in our apartments when it gets chilly—there is hope. Alla Famiglia has started to sell their signature sauce at retailers around the city. This means that you can enjoy their 60 PHOTO BY SABIKA
MANIAC: What experience do you want people to have when they come to Alla Famiglia? What can they expect? JV: An Alla Famiglia customer can expect exemplary service without pretension and genuine care from our friendly staff to deliver the best possible dining experience. We want the customer to feel like they are part of our family. MANIAC: How does your Roman heritage influence your cooking? Are there any dishes on the menu that are unique to Rome? JV: Roman heritage has a large influence on our cooking. It all began with my grandfather who grew up in Patrica Lazio, which is 30 minutes south of Rome. Our house ground sausage recipe is from Patrica. Our famous smoked provolone appetizer with shaved black truffles is also from Rome. Also Emilia Romagna plays a large part in our cooking, which is where my grandmother was from. Homemade pastas, hand-pulled mozzarella, and delicious desserts come from the heartland of Italy. That is what Emilia Romagna stands for. MANIAC: You’ve been working on your sauce for years! At what point did you know that you had made it just right? JV: We have been making the sauce in our family for the last 25 years…I guess we just got lucky! MANIAC: What advice can you give on how to make a really good homemade sauce? JV: Layering the four different types of tomatoes is the key.
Alla Famiglia. What wines are staples in the Alla Famiglia kitchen? JV: Our favorite wines are labels such as Antinori Marchesi Chianti Classico, Romana Dal Forno, Valpolicella, Planeta Santa Cecilia…and about one hundred others. MANIAC: You have an insanely tasty “holy oil” to dip your delicious breads in. Any chance we’ll see that in stores any time soon? JV: We are working right now on developing the holy oil for retail. Hurdles with that product include the fresh banana pepper and garlic which makes the product unstable for packing. But we are working through it. We are also working on a number of other products for our retail portfolio. MANIAC: How should someone feel after having a good Italian meal? JV: Fat and happy! If that sounds good to you (how could it not?!), be sure to make a reservation at Alla Famiglia and pick up a jar of their delicious sauce at a number of fine stores including Pennsylvania Macaroni Company, McGinnis Sisters, various Giant Eagle Market Districts, and more. For more information on this incredible company and a full list of stores you can find their sauce visitwww.allafamiglia.com and www.allafamigliabrand.com.
MANIAC: What lead to the decision to release your sauce to retailers? JV: It started with an overwhelming request from our clientele, and it is an amazing accomplishment to see our label in stores or people to enjoy every day! MANIAC: You have an extensive wine list at 61

“As of late, my favorite designers have crossed the fashion line and moved into the realm of activewear in one way or another. We no longer show up to workout in any old pair of sweatpants. Having the right activewear has become as important as the right pair of shoes. For me it translates into activewear as daywear and weekend-wear - hence the synergy of fitness and fashion, says Melissa Evancic, owner of Pure Barre Mt. Lebanon and Pure Barre Peters Township. Sunflower
POWER BY KATELYN BLOUGH, PHOTOGRAPHY BY CODY NICOLE WIEGAND
There’s an old legend that tells of sunflowers guiding pioneer women on their journeys westward – with bright, yellow trails of flowers that grew from the seeds of the brave women who dared to make the trek. It was this legend that inspired the annual Sunflower POWER event hosted by PerLora of the South Side. Held in honor of National Recovery Month, the event benefited the Pennsylvania Organization for Women In Early Recovery, or POWER. Its mission is to help women reclaim their lives from the disease of alcohol and drug addiction, and to help the brave women in recovery conquer their fears and begin the healing process. Sunflower POWER was made possible with the help of event chairs Mary Prezioso and Sherree Goldstein, as well as artist Michael Lotenero, who served as Honorary Chair. The night was filled with savory treats, upbeat music by DJ Kelli Burns, and even sunflower-inspired models styled by Cheeks on Walnut Street and hair by Izzazu. Guests enjoyed light fare and drinks from Altius, Bistro 19, and Square Café, and desserts from Bella Christie & Lil’ Z’s Sweet Boutique. Perhaps the most important and fun element of the evening was the silent auction called Pillows for POWER. Over sixty local artists and celebrities participated in stitching, painting, and/or drawing unique designs depicting the resilience and beauty of women. These pieces were then auctioned off to raise money for the organization. The night was fun for all and a big success as Sunflower POWER raised over $12,000 dollars to support its important cause!

PHILIP PELUSI ‘Sets the Trend’
Runway Show BY MIA BENCIVENGA, PHOTOGRAPHY BY CODY NICOLE WIEGAND
There’s nothing like a model in an all-black ensemble, bedazzled sashes draped around her, hair perfectly sculpted, strutting her stuff on a pink ribbon adorned catwalk to raise money for a great cause. On Wednesday, October 1 the seventh annual Philip Pelusi Fashion Trend Runway Show, with proceeds benefitting the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research, was in full force at Diesel Club Lounge and Skybar. While specialty pink drinks by Clique Vodka were being poured and hors d’oeuvres by Local Bar & Kitchen and cupcakes from Tummy Treats were snacked on, patrons perused the silent auctions and raffles. The second floor was filled with VIPs at their chic tables overlooking the catwalk and the glowing pink lights of the scene below. A screen behind the catwalk played clips from last year’s fashion show, and displayed the numerous sponsors that had made the event possible. At 8:15 Philip Pelusi’s General Manager Art DeConciliis kicked off the main event, saying that the show was not just for a great cause; it was also going to give the audience the Philip Pelusi take on the up and coming styles for fall and winter. He then introduced Philip Pelusi himself, who was looking sharp in a pink suit with color block tie. For Philip, breast cancer awareness is personal. He said, “Clients become like a family,” and that sense of caring about his clients and their wellbeing compelled him to become involved in breast cancer awareness. Over the past 7 years this event has raised $50,000 for the Susan B. Komen Foundation with 75% of the proceeds staying in Pittsburgh and 25% goes to national research. With this in mind, the fun began. DJ B-Wood kept the music lively and electric, as Tall Cathy from Kiss FM and Sheri Van Dyke from 3WS introduced each model. They described the models’ outfits, along with their Philip Pelusi hair styles, which ranged from long angular cuts to cute pixies. The models were rocking sassy black and white mini dresses, leather jumpsuits, and casual outfits with cute pullovers and jeans from local shops such as Femi, Kristi Boutique and Lapel. Throughout the show there were “Project Pelusi” models, each representing the unique stylings of Pittsburgh area salons. The event was followed by the Pink After-Party at Skybar, where the celebration of fashion, and life, continued. 66

Thrival WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY SARAH LOLLEY
What started as a networking barbeque morphed into a 2-day music festival the purpose of which is to attract attention to the Thrill Mill’s awesomeness at giving start-ups the platform and funds to root themselves in the well of opportunity and talent in Pittsburgh. Across the street from Google’s headquarters at Bakery Square, where an active construction site exists, a throng of song and synthetic beats echo around the neighborhood. It’s the Thrival Fest, where new ideas are celebrated with music. During the week, events ranged from talks, pitch opportunities, and networking socials. The finale was a music festival ending with Moby on deck. Saturday’s line-up included instrumental acts like local Americana group The Red Western with big record label band Portugal. The Man. Also mixing up the dirt that day was hip-hop artist Talib Kweli. For every concert-goer there seemed to be a police officer and a “techno bee” that inspired a dance from the chase. Sunday was electronica day with Z-trip dropping the base and Mayer Hawthorne’s groovy love making set. Green Velvet kept it straight up house before the dust whirled into a tornado for Moby, taking the stage like a crazy man. Backstage at Google headquarters Moby shared his Maniac Moment with us. While he says most of his Maniac moments were probably prior to his six years of sobriety he did have one that stuck out. “I tried to convince my driver to drive through a plate-glass window because I wanted to see what it would sound like,” Moby says with a smile. “Until this poor man in broken English was explaining to me why he didn’t think it was a good idea to drive through a plate-glass window. I kept trying to say like we’ll pretend it was an accident, you won’t get in trouble because I really wanted to see what it sounded like and felt like to drive through a plate-glass window.” Along with Thrill Mill founders dancing on stage, Moby drove his fist and ramped up, backwater beats in the air as the sun set over an audience gyrating in the dust beneath them, a dust storm of new ideas as the backdrop. 68

Being married to a pop culture icon and sex symbol might sound glamorous, but for Backstreet Boy Nick Carter’s new bride, Lauren Kitt-Carter, she just feels like she is married to her soul mate. “I don’t look at Nick as a sex symbol…he is my best friend, lover, and partner rolled up into one.” Sounds like these newlyweds are still in the honeymoon phase, and we hope it lasts.

wellness routine. Lauren is more than just the wife of a pop star—she’s a professional fitness expert and star of the VH1 reality show, I Heart Nick Carter, which premiered in September and features the couple’s relationship and Lauren’s career. We thought we’d get some advice from this fitness aficionado to see how we could stay in shape over the holidays. Lauren says even though there are a lot of parties and festivities, it’s best to maintain your routine and clean eating habits. “I indulge on the holiday or at parties, but for only one meal.” She has her weak moments, just like the rest of us, but if she has too much to eat or drink she adds in an extra workout.
“
I don’t look at Nick as a sex symbol…he is my best friend, lover, and partner rolled up into one.

Lauren is definitely doing something right. She is stunningly beautiful, and seems to beam from the inside out. Maybe that’s just the love bug, but we think her clean, healthy living is paying off. Her “addictive personality” has been put to good use by channeling all of that commitment into her fitness and 70
Ironically, it was the negative press about her physique that Lauren read when she started dating Nick that prompted her to lose 45 pounds and get into shape. While it is a shame that media scrutiny of her body ever happened, she says she’s grateful for the push into a healthy lifestyle. For the holidays, Lauren and Nick are hoping to just spend some quality time together. She says she “would be happy with free time at home with my family and friends” for Christmas, and we wish them a holiday filled with good health (and a few yummy indulgence meals!). Southside Works created a new event this year to celebrate the local food trucks, which have been a growing trend in the culinary world and industry, and are now a staple in the Pittsburgh community. The Fall Food Festival took place on September 13th from noon til’ 8PM and attracted hundreds of adults, children, and families together to eat, drink, and dance! Foodies lined up for their favorite local fare and dined on delicacies from a variety of food trucks including BRGR, Franktuary, L.A. Taco, and PGH Pierogi Truck. Pittsburgh Pie Guy, Nakama, Sito’s
Mediterranean Mobile Salad Bar, and Pgh Crepes were also on site serving those who visited truck after truck searching for the tastiest meals on wheels. Hofbräuhaus beverages were available to event-goers, who danced the day away to the sounds of The Routines, Lovebettie, and Jimbo & The Soupbones. Let’s hope SouthSide Works adds this to their annual calendar of events. 71

MAME KENDALL OF SMOKE CIGAR SHOP & LOUNGE IS MAKING CIGARS AN AFFORDABLE LUXURY FOR MEN AND WOMEN BY SUSIE MEISTER, PHOTOGRAPHY BY CODY NICOLE WIEGAND
Whoever said it’s a man’s world had never met Mame Kendall, owner of Smoke Cigar Shop & Lounge. She is a strong, independent, and competent woman running a business in a historically maledominated field. Located in Bridgeville, Smoke Cigar Shop & Lounge is, like its owner, extraordinary. Despite cigars traditionally being seen as exclusively for the boys, Mame is committed to maintaining an environment that welcomes everyone equally. “I wanted to create a cigar shop that would not be intimidating. Where people of all types would walk in and feel at home.” The beauty of the space is not what I expected to find, but Mame’s background in interior design and passion for fashion certainly played a role in the style of the shop. The leather chairs and couches and gorgeous wood display cases give the Smoke Cigar Shop & Lounge a classy, elegant atmosphere without being stuffy. Walking into the shop, the aroma of high-quality cigars was a pleasant break from the cold weather outside, and Mame’s friendly personality was a warm welcome to all who entered. Many of the patrons who stopped during 72
my visit were women, which speaks to Mame’s ability to make “nontraditional” cigar aficionados comfortable. Watching her at work, I quickly see how Mame became one of the city’s most reputable cigar experts. I asked her how she managed to convince some of the old school smokers that a “girl” could handle the job of running a cigar shop. “It took about one day,” she quips. She said once they realized she was knowledgeable and offered helpful advice, they were sold. After becoming co-owner of the Twins Smoke Shop in New Hampshire, Mame returned to her hometown of Pittsburgh with the experience and expertise to start her own store. Here she has established a reputation of a true connoisseur of the tobacco industry. She takes pride in finding out what her customers are looking for in a cigar including flavor profile, cigar size, and budget. This commitment to meeting her customers’ needs makes her a trusted source for information among both men and women who stop in. Spending some time in Smoke Cigar Shop & Lounge, I saw how
vintages. She describes how you can pair the cigar with your favorite alcoholic beverage or even coffee, and the ways cigars enhance social experiences and the taste of various drinks. To her, this is a craft. There is a lot to know, and it’s always changing, but she is ready to keep learning. One of her favorite ways to engage the community and encourage new and loyal customers to stop in is through monthly events and holiday specials. For Christmas, Mame is hosting a 12 Days of Christmas special where a different brand of cigars will be featured each day with markdowns and deals. It’s the perfect way to get great prices on high-quality products, and finish your Christmas shopping. We are always delighted to see smart, dynamic women thriving in Pittsburgh, and Mame is one of those incredible forces that did not let tradition, naysayers, or stereotypes get in her way. Plus, she is the mama to an “amazing 7-year-old” named Maggie. It seems like she truly is doing it all and making it all look good. Smoke Cigar Shop & Lounge is an extension of her. It is cool, comfortable, stylish, and fun.

Yes, that shoe fits us—we’re maniacs for entrepreneurship! It’s our fashion. We wear entrepreneurship. We live entrepreneurship. And, we walk the walk of entrepreneurship. Every day. As long as it takes. Entrepreneurship is the power of self-actualization. Entrepreneurship is the chain-mail of the U.S. economy, and we forge it strong. Entrepreneurship is our purpose, and our passion.
